GV was convinced that one of these wine was young, and one definitely a little older. They were both from 2004…proving that our leader is human after all.

Barolo is probably my favorite wine; so glad to see this head-to-head! I went on a honeymoon in Alba a few years ago and it was dreamy. We spent a week just meandering around tasting Barolo, Barbaresco, Dolcetto D’Alba, and eating truffles. My favorite wine from that time was a 2001 Vietti Castiglione Barolo, one of the few things I’m cellaring.

  • QOTD..I am a big fan of Barolos after living in northern Italy for 4 years. Favorites producers are Bartolo Mascerello and Giuseppe Rinaldi (favor traditional barolos) as well as Manzone. Went to a great 2005 barolo wine tasting Sat night….Domenico Clericos (Pajana and Ginestre) were the highlites, but also Corino and others.

Great show Gary!! Love the Barolo! The last bottle I had was 2 weeks ago, a 2000 Gromis with the father in law. It was one for the books.

QOTD: Scavino Cannubi 2003. Expensive, but layer upon layer of flavour, dark, rich, elegant, little floral edge. A favorite for the year.

Only had one Barolo. 2004 Lodali – entry level stuff but still very interesting. May need to have some with the wine guys this weekend. I agree with you Gary, when I talk to wine nerds, they get seriously jacked up about Barolo. Its stock is rising!

  • Hey Gary

Good show, I like the blind style, efficent and informative.

QOTD: I really haven’t drunk enough Barolo, but those I’ve had I’ve enjoyed a lot. I’ve been buying a few recently, but those I’ve just been sticking straight in the cellar.

    Cheers

qotd: last one i had was at a tasting for a distributor’s portfolio . dont remember the name, but it was easily the most tannic wine of the night.

Gary, what was the last vin jaune you had, and will you have one on the show?

  • We have Nebbiolo growing pretty well in Yakima valley. There are a few wineries picking up on it. I don’t believe I’ve had it other than as a blending grape. Hope to try.

  • Nice show, loving the the blind taste test..
QOTD: I tend to always have italian reds when dining out at italian restaurants, much less so at home. (trying new varietals and mainly french) My experience with Barolo has always been good, albeit pricier than I usually would spend. I look forward to trying some more and seeing how it develops in the coming decade. Unfortunately I can’t remember the last one I had.. That needs to change.

I used to drink Barolo all the time in the 80s and early 90’s. The good ones were $25-$40. They were very popular in NJ Italian restaurants, they went well with the heavier Italian meals like Osso Bucco, Pasta Bolognese etc. Since the dollar has sunk so low after 1999, Barolo has become for me not a good value for the price. I am a bit sad about it. The affordable ones now are awful. If I am going to spend $60-80+ for a bottle with a big meal I will go to a Napa Cab or Bordeaux every time. They bring more “thunder” for me in that price point.
