GV was convinced that one of these wine was young, and one definitely a little older. They were both from 2004…proving that our leader is human after all.

    Gary,
Thanks for the Barolo tasting. QoTD- Barolo is one of the best experiences in wine I have ever had and I have great respect for it. While preparing for the WSET Advanced exams my Somm instructor poured a 2001 that set me back. It had the Classic Tar and Roses profile. This wine had the most profound length. I literally could not get to sleep that night until 2 am thinking about this amazing complex wine. Of the some 1200 wines I have tasted Barolo is certainly at the top of my list. I only hope the wine makers keep to the old world ways, I see a few newer fruit forward styles that I do not really prefer.

I like old school Barolo. I don’t really think it loves small new oak. It ends up like Burgundy after a long time in bottles. People trying to make it in the style of a Bordeaux or Cali Cab are making a mistake..

Even though I do like some newer school ones like Vietti.

    I love it .

Haha…Gary wanted to say lady on the street but a freak in the bed

    Don’t know what KAD means…

QOTD: Only had a couple of Barolos in my life…never been too enthralled with Italian wines. To much sour cherry, although I have like some super tuscans (prob b/c they aren’t limited to sangio)

How ironic that you chose a Barolo to air today. It is my birthday and I opened a 2004 La Zolla Barolo that I ordered from you about a month ago. It was the not as expensive, but I have really come to love Italian wines, especially Nebbiolos. I was happy with it but it tasted like a nebbiolo that I have had before, not a Barolo that I wanted to experience. I will continue to experiment and seek out Italian wines.

First Barolo I ever had was a 1997 Giacosa. #/4 of a bottle between me and a waitress.
A guy and his wife (think it was his wife) ordered it for dinner. Before the first course, he was waving me over. I went over to the table and he handed me his CC and asked me to settle him up. ???????.
I took the dinner charge off and just charged for the wine, assuming something was wrong (he was in a hurry!).
CC and check presented, left the table to bag up the wine for him with a copy of the dinner check (state law) and he and his wife were gone.
I then see an exchange of words between him, his wife, and another woman in the lounge. Got pretty heated and all parties left.
So, I sat there with a really expensive bottle of Barolo that was barely touched.
The end of the night came and me and the other waitperson realized it was probably safe to call this bottle ours.
Enjoyed with a nice cold Cote de Boeuf next to the dish station.

    Great Barolo show.
My first experience with the wine (at least that I can remember) was while staying at the Castello di Verduno (former 16th century hunting lodge or something like that) in the Barolo region in the town of Verduno drinking the Castello di Verduno’s own barolo (it was great and was also available here in the U.S.A.,or at least it was back in 1989)
Since then I have definitely acquired a taste for the nebbiolo grape – Elio Altare when I want fruity. Demenico clerico when I want a “Montelena” style “in your face” barolo and Paolo Scavino when I want “elegance”. I hope that you are correct and that Barolo will be discovered for what it is within the next ten years………..or maybe I don’t πŸ™‚

Barberaa and Barolos are two of my favorite Italian wines, apart from Brunellos.

QOTD: The latest Barolo and Barbera I’ve had is San Silvestro. Quite delicious.

I got into wine 6 years ago and have many, many in my cellar but my early experiences have taught me to wait. I believe that I have not really had a profound mature Barolo and I suspect that this was the case for all those that were disappointed. Producer matters here as usual, but so does vintage and timing more than with any other wine. Unlike Bordeaux, colder vintages are more ageworthy, 96,97,2001,2004 being the ones to seek out for ageing. Apparently the 98’s are drinking amazing now. Some 2001 are drinking well now and the only really good Barolo I have had so far is the 2001 Ceretto Barolo Brunate matched perfectly with Osso Bucco. Awesome blind tasting Gary, I like when you try to guess vintage, price etc., very hard to do and shows courage. You are very good at recognizing the more expensive wine. Joel
