89/100

line of the day – ‘seemed a little conservative, then got a little freaky deaky’

GV was convinced that one of these wine was young, and one definitely a little older. They were both from 2004…proving that our leader is human after all.

I got into wine 6 years ago and have many, many in my cellar but my early experiences have taught me to wait. I believe that I have not really had a profound mature Barolo and I suspect that this was the case for all those that were disappointed. Producer matters here as usual, but so does vintage and timing more than with any other wine. Unlike Bordeaux, colder vintages are more ageworthy, 96,97,2001,2004 being the ones to seek out for ageing. Apparently the 98’s are drinking amazing now. Some 2001 are drinking well now and the only really good Barolo I have had so far is the 2001 Ceretto Barolo Brunate matched perfectly with Osso Bucco. Awesome blind tasting Gary, I like when you try to guess vintage, price etc., very hard to do and shows courage. You are very good at recognizing the more expensive wine. Joel

I agree that the nebbiolo grape in Piemonte makes some of the most elegant wines. Very aromatic and similar in that respect to red Burgundy. Prefer the old world style that are matured in large Slovenian oak barrels (botte) vs. en barique.

    Gary,

Good show. Like many Vayniacs, I enjoy the honesty of the blind-tasting format.

QOTD: The only Barolo I have ever tasted was a Cancello del Barone Barolo ? Riserva [2000], and it was awesome. Unfortunately I had it with Pasta and meat sauce, which clashed with the Barolo. It would have been better with a steak, in my opinion. The wine was just on the light side of being full-bodied. The nose was a combintation of earthiness, leather and floral notes – a very unique combination in my limited experience. The flavor was also unique, but difficult to describe. The closest description I can think of is: plumb and other dark fruit, with some leather, tar, and licorice. It was a strange, complex combination that was sensational. I would give it a 92, and this was not a high-end barolo. Can’t wait to try one of those!
