French wines overpriced? No big surprise but funny to see GV hammering two disappointing efforts from Bordeaux

I just saw this in Richie’s comment and I will also say that Mouton Cadet Rouge is always the most disappointing Bordeaux for me in any vintage. I don’t think the Blanc is that bad, though.

The wines may not have been great but the blackboard is still rocking.

QOTD: Without a shadow of a doubt the 1986 Cos. 95 points parker, 88-89 me. I paid some serious money for this at Berry Bros. in Dublin and was TOTALLY underwhelmed. What made it worse was that I was doing a big dinner for some friends who had all contributed $200 toward wine and here I was playing this one up as the wine of the night and BOOM! Hit in the face by a frying pan. Needless to say, Mr. Prats and I will have to have some words…

I don’t have a clue about the bad Bordeaux(no recollection at all) but I like your t-shirt.

Whatever they served at my cousin’s wedding last year was the worst Bordeaux I’ve ever tried to choke down. In fact I ended up drinking beer instead.

Hate to be the “Ugly American”, but I find Bordeaux to be by and large disappointing and overrated. I find very few Bordeaux wines in the sweet spot on the QPR front. I much prefer New World stuff when it comes to the Bordeaux grapes. Also, Italian wines tend to please me much more than French these days.

Ok, Gary, you got me on that QOTD. I’ve been a long time lurker 2.5 years now (since I met you at the Boston Wine Fest in ’07). I love what you are doing! Big Fan. The most disappointing Bordeax I’ve had was a $85 2003 LaFleur-Petrus. Tasted WORSE than a $12 generic Bordeax. Sometimes bottles above $50 are hit-or-miss. I found that $20-30 for a bottle is a pretty safe range.

  • QOTD: Not sure I have an answer for that one. I’ve had cheap Bordeaux’s that did nothing for me, but I can’t say I’d remember them.
