Merry Christmas Gary and all at WL!
I also regret not purchasing the X-mas Pack but had to draw the line somewhere in the spending.
QotD: I had a terribly corked bottle of 1981 Chateau Dillon Bordeaux that was stored in someone’s kitchen for 20+ years (morons) and a N.V. Veuve Cliquot Yellow label – this is really not my style when it comes to bubbles. Give me a cremant d’alsace any day. That will teach me to spend X-mas at the in-laws. 🙁

If you must know: 2007 two hands gnarley dudes

I put my two hands around this, sucked it down and said ‘dude this is gnarley’

This wine opens to blackberry liquor, asian spice, pepper and currant. Over time you the nose turns to that gamey chalky smokey cassis, just fantasic.

On the palate, lightly herbacous, rich blackberry, mixed with red fruits akin to red velvet cake, complex spices, smooth, balanced, long finish.

one of the best qpr’s of the year at $24

QOTD:I guess I’ll keep going with the boxing day dinner. Started with oysters on the half shell from New Brunswick, little small ones, extremely delicious and briny. Matched with 2004 Dom Louis Moreau Vaulignot Premier Cru Chablis, good match, the wine excellent on the nose but not as steely as I would have liked on the palate, perhaps a bit on the way downhill. Then on to fenugreek tomato cream curried Chilean Sea Bass from Vij’s Indian cookbook, he owns probably the best Indian restaurant in North America based in Vancouver. Matched with the 2005 Stratus White from Niagara. The dish absolutely delicious, the wine terrible, reminds me of alcohol meets oak, no fruit or acidity that I could detect. This was hugely disappointing as this is supposed to be one of the better Niagara producers, but with the exception of their Riesling Ice wine I have found them to be a big disappointment. On to a friends later to test left over wines and the 2006 Ca’Marcanda Promis 2006 by Angelo Gaja really stood out as a beautiful elegant wine. Joel

Started off Christmas night with the 2007 Sans Liege En Gedi 100% grenache. Decanted for 2 hours, the nose and taste were identical. Bright tart red fruits but strong alcohol. This wine had a pretty decent finish, 15-20 sec. but the wine was one dimensional. I think it could have more promise with bottle time. Everyone was meh, including myself, on this wine. Next up was a 2005 Chateau Faugeres. Decanted for 3 hours. The nose was muted with not much coming through, but the taste was fantastic. Beautiful dark fruits with a hint of vanilla. This wine was like Billy D Williams, straight up smooth. Such a balanced wine, everyone really enjoyed it

Yep! The Quinta Do Vallado Reserva 2007 was a hit. A big wine. Inky, meaty, red berries, dried herbs, a bit of mint & coffee. Fruit driven, silky tannins & smooooooothhh. 92 p in my book

    Ruinart Blanc De Bleezy, Non-Veezy.

Beautiful package, with clear glass – apparently it’s UV resistant or whatever. But the bottle is sort of bulbous, very distinctive and good looking. Some people don’t care about the package – I liken it to plate presentation for a dish.

    Pretty, fine bubbles.

Sort of tight on the nose, but some yeast and bread. Like uncooked bread dough.

It was very creamy, and bready with hints of toast, like you were eating an undercooked piece of French toast. Some almond and vanilla. Really lacked structure and balance for me – almost no acidity at all. That made it somewhat flabby, a tad unctious.

Tasty and fancy, but for the money, I’ve had much better (holler Christian Etienne, Henri Goutorbe!).

I am a fairly young drinker (accourding to the law any ways) but I live in Central Nebraska and there is a very small vineyard in our area. The name is Prairie Creek Vineyards they make all local home grown grapes and fruits we had the Red Plumb and the Rhubarb for christmas eve. The Red Plumb was a 2008 red wine but the Rhubarb was 2009 blush (I think. it was a light redish pink) both were very good the local fruits are very apparent and bold. For just $12.50 these were on my top five. But as I said I dont know what I am talking about so you must try for your self.

98 Roger Sabon Prestige CDP, glorious strawberry and plums. A nice bit of herbs and earth which developed after an hour. Balanced acidity with soft tannins and a nice red brick color. Had this with a lovely pork tenderloin with rosemary, garlic and sun-dried tomatoes. YUM! Gary hope you had a nice holiday and a chance to spend some time with the family. All the best Waynestreet.

QOTD: had many good wines durring the holiday but one that was a stand out as being a great value was an ’06 Brancott New Zealand Reserve Marlborough Pinot Noir. This was a gift and I was happily suprised by it, as I have very limited experience with New Zealand Pinot Noir and most of that was poor. very tight nose, some berries, green peppers and what I’m calling silly putty/old toy. fruity on the front with that green pepper/grass comming through in the mid. very heavy black pepper at the end with a smooooth finish. I will be thanking the client that gifted me with this and may well make it a staple “intro wine” for friends looking to get into pinot noir.

    happy xmas gry and mott!

Merry Xmas Gary, Mott and the WLTV Crew. QOTD: Had a 2006 Louis Jadot Mersault with our Xmas starter – it had a lovely rich lemon minerality with a some subtle oak influences – all in all a very balenced wine with nothing dominating the palate. Lovely stuff (and I’m not even that much of a Chardonnay fan)!.

Lurker coming out of the shadows. Been watching now for a couple months, catching up on past episodes. Can’t tell you how much we enjoy your shows.
I really like the blind tastings, so the more the merrier.
I’m a daily drinker of wine so would like to see some emphasis on the less than 15 bones wines. It’s tough to make the budget fit a steady diet of 20 bones and up wines.
BTW -was tasting a North Carolina cab the other day and tasted smoked bacon for the first time. Since my sniffy sniff ability is pretty challenged, I consider this a major breaktrhough.
Keep up the good work Gary

QOTD: Started off with a Sancerre, Comte Lafond Sancerre 2006, followed by a Opus One 1998, and finshed off with a Oremus Tokaji Aszu 5 Puttonyos 2000.

The Sancerre was quite muted on the attack but the finish was crisp and had tons of minerals that tingled the palate. The Opus One was a bit disappointing, I was put off by the oakiness, and a pronounced charcoal smokiness on the finish. The Tokaji, however, was perhaps the best wine of the night… nectar of the Gods I’d say.

    Merry Christmas everyone!

On Christmas Eve, we started with a BR Kohn Chardonay, which was pretty good, but not out of this world. Not overly oaked. Next we had a 2007 Christine Andrew Viognier, which we thought was excellent. It had nice acidity that went well with the seafood we were having. On Christmas, we had a Pierre Sparr Reserve Pinot Blanc, which was also excellent. It had a great color, and had nice pear and peach nose and flavors that lasted quite awhile.

  • QOTD: Wine on christmas i Sweden? Since our meals are very traditional for Sweden, pickled herring, smoked salmon, sausages, meatballs, mustard glazed ham, brown beans, potatoes, green cabbage, red cabbage, stockfish, and more Beer and schnaps is the beverages at the table.

With the turkey yesterday (yes its a tradition in my household to have a turkey swedish way on boxingday) we had Bergström Pinot Noir 2006 Bergström Vineyard

Review? After decanting 1½ hour the nose is nice raspberry, leather, dirt and hint of red currant. The taste is initially red fruit with a jelly touch to it. Not the sweet kind, the kind you use with meat or turkey. Tannins at the mid palate is very small but distinct, a little bit of white pepper and a faint cinnamon action. Back end is silky smooth with more red fruit jelly and some green minty flavour. Alcohol 14.2 not noticeable at all.

Well it’s on Cork’d too 😀 Have nice time all and soon a Happy New Year!

    Hi All
First time for me on this site but I enjoy the show and wanted to start being involved. We had a variety of wines on Christmas Eve since our guests brought all types of things. It was not wine but.. The big hit was a Hot Apple Pie that was hot apple cider, cinnamon sticks and a shot of Tuaca. It was topped off with a plop of whipped cream. YUMMY. Christmas dinner we had a Valley of the Moon Pinot Noir that was very good. Fruit and rich and went well with our Prime Rib. Well looking forward to more interaction with you all. Happy New Year.

We got the Sansonnet non-reserve… thanks for sending La Reserve overnight to make it for our tasting!

    QOTD:
Uncle Karl makes wine out of gleaned grapes here in Sonoma under the label “Kiss.” We had the Kiss 05 Chardonnay with a full malolactic – didnt see any Oak, but was the most buttery Chard in a good way. Fantastic.

St Francis Wild Oak Cab Sauv 05: Beauf a la cuilliere which was fantastico, and the St Francis was a smooth cab with low tannins, cherry, blended well with the food.

And after I finish writing this… Kelly will have the Gewurtz… Ill have the Grand Cru…. and Paul’s finishing the Malbec. Merry Christmas!
