lines of the day – ‘Mallorca…you could walk it coast to coast if you’re in great shape like Mott’ and (of barging a young Pats fan) ‘I don’t want to be defined by that moment; that was a 65, in other moments I’m a 99’

Very enjoyable episode with really interesting guest (who manages to hang in there despite not having the best grasp of English). GV turning into a very good listener….at last !

Great guest – good show. Get some of these wines to sell – would love to try this varietal.

    QOTD: Soccer…meh.

New comments format – looks good so far (what's this thing about a browser setting preventing me from logging in? I never logged in b4)

My father and brother are coming over tomorrow and we're going to do a tasting with the Christmas pack…very excited. Want to serve some cheeses also…complimentary suggestions?

  • Great show, great guest.. looking forward to tasting some of these wines.

QOTD: Barcelona is a powerhouse in soccer today, really enjoy watching them play especially L. Messi

    PS: Go JETS!

  • ONUMello

Not gonna lie, I'm an (American) football fan, not (traditional) football follower. But I know US soccer has leaps and bounds to go before it reaches the level of Central/South American or European soccer, and I hope it does some day so we can compete in the real 'major leagues'

  • Chicago Croat

…. Oh sorry, sniffy sniff doesn't conver???…. LMAO

  • Gary, love that I can log in with my twitter account now!

I hate soccer, but whatever 😀

Interesting episode. Anyway, I usually watch on my iPhone which makes it hard to comment (as I have to remember to come back to do it later). But I think this new system will encourage myself and many others to make the extra effort to participate!

  • Lobonick

Gary, I love you dearly, but how did your good brain cells get diverted from football over to wine? Talk about having to take the good with the bad! Go Eagles!!!

I have loved El Barça (FC Barcelona) for years. I also love Anima Negra wines. Very glad to see that the two things go together! To me these guys are the epitome of why Spanish wine is so intriguing. There's something real showing terroir with an ability to ripen the fruit. The range of styles and varieties Spain can do is amazing.

  • I may not have watched a large number of episodes on WLTV but I don't think it is too early to say this may be one of my favorite guests ever. He did a great job talking passionately about wine varietals in the region and just seemed like a great guy. You as well were as charismatic as ever and it always makes me happy to see you doing what you do best. I have been reading your book recently and hopefully it will be the motivation I need to start up a project and incorporate all the social media tools I already use. have a great day!

  • Thnx Sica 🙂

Hey Gary, I'll work in my profile. That would be awesome if you stopped in!!! Socarrat Paella Bar & Bar de Vinos on 19th and 9th.

  • Loved the passion about life from the guest. There were fantastic moment lost in translation, it's fantastic that Wine transcends language! Keep those lesser known varietals coming!

  • gdeciantis

That was great show. I love the chemistry.

  • devinos

Did anybody say that the real “Soul” of these wines is Francesc Grimalt, the winemaker from Anima Negra from the begining till a couple of years ago ?

  • Awesome show. Great genuine guest. Someone who really cares about the heart and soul of wine making. Thanks Gary.

  • adam976

    Pretty sweet ep Gary!

Miquelangel is an awesome guy. I thought his English was excellent. I am totally inspired by his nonchalance about how his vineyard is bio-dynamic. I too believe that is how things just should be.

QOTD: I am not that into sports.

  • Hey Kasperhip, I'm a developer for Gary/Wine Library and I was actually enjoying going through the comments and saved them right before they switched over to Disqus so that I could keep reading them while they imported.

You can go to them here
    http://gourmetlibrary.com/Wine_Tasting_with_Hel

Sorry I loaded them up on Gourmet Library, don't have access to the other servers from my home computer.

  • Went out and got a bottle of the AN/2 (05 vintage). Excited to try it. Have never even heard of Callet before, so I'm pumped to give it a whirl. Thanks for the great guest, great episode, and for showing me a new grape!

  • teckdeck2008

Great guest and I love the choice of wines too. As little as I drink the unusual varietals its something i look forward to doing and as a result I love it when you do the same on your show. I guess I'm living vicariously through right now lol.

Qotd: I really don't follow soccer much but I do want to try and watch more of it. Its the sport I respect the most, but I just don't have enough time in the day to watch football, basketball and soccer.

    qotd – juve of course,
would be a venezia fan, if they could ever get on tv, haha

  • garagar

I´m from Spain and this is my first post…

QOTD: Sorry Miquel Angel, but I´m Real Madrid FC fan and although I admire Barcelona´s actual level of excellence of his game you´ll understand that my desire is to watch them be defeated everytime and everywhere.

Respect today´s episode, I actually have a bottle of Anima Negra 2005 waiting for an special occasion, but I´ve tasted AN/2 (2005) twice and I have to say that it is a very good price-valued and surprising wine.

If anyone is interested in Mallorca´s wines there´s another interesting cellar with similar prices than AN. Their main wines are '4 Kilos' and '12 Volts'. '4 kilos' is excellent.

PD: I didn´t get the exact meaning of Quibia. Aren´t happy with your original country? Do you mean Spain? Please, Miquel Angel, don´t mix wines with political issues. Don´t you remember the cava boicot a few years ago?

  • CHICAGO MARK

  • OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHAT A WIN! thank u all for the well wishes!!!

  • RANDINTHECITY

LOLOL YAY!!!!!!!! DRINKING CHAMPAGNE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL (my family is nuts! lol)

  • QOTD: Another sports question I have no idea how to answer.

That was excellent and very enjoyable! Thank you both.

  • cmaloy

He wasn't saying basic when he was talking about the community that doesn't have laws, etc … He was talking about The Basque Country of Spain which is an Autonomous Community of northern Spain (Wikipedia).

QOTD: I LOVE the Barcelona football team!!! I love their new stadium as well. It is very nice. What a great team last year and I expect to see much more of them this year. I usually cheer for them unless they play team USA or Brasil.

  • joshfromcharleston

Gary…you see those J-E-T-S…Jets…Jets….Jets??? Lookout AFC!

  • christhegreek

QOTD: Love the way Barca play football. Don't like it when they beat the glorious Man Utd in the European Cup Final.
PS. J E T S jets jets jets!!! Bring on the next play off game
PPS. Love the fact I have had the AN/2 on my wine list for 2 years!! (email me if you are in the UK and I can hook you up with a supplier)

  • Skhoffma

I am definitely a lurker, but I HAD to comment on this episode. Miquelangel is the best guest I think you've ever had on the show. He has such deep knowledge of his wine and land. Talk about a sense of place! Thank you Gary so much. Keep the great shows coming.

  • EmZeeGee

Please don't appologise for guests; many bring great insights and perspectives. Miquelangel is one such guest; we really enjoyed his comments and would like to purchase those wines! Thanks for appearing Miquelangel!

QOTD: I'm often a bit embarrassed that America is the only country that doesn't use “football” for “soccer.” Football is a much more accurate word for the sport we call soccer than it is for “American football.” (That's about the extent of my knowledge on either sport, though; I'm a bookish sort.

    BTW: I'm enjoying Crush It!

One more comment about the previous episode; I'm impressed Helen would like to visit again; that would take some guts.

  • invinovertias

    fucking great show.

  • Loved this episode. The guest was interesting and fun. Very interested to try the new grape. Thank you.

  • wayno da wino

Thanks a lot Dan. That was a long read, funny and sad at the same time. Nearly everybody got fired up, hu? I hope The Buehlers don’t take too bad. It’s just wine, after all.
You guys are doing a great job, and I’m very happy that this got cleared up. I am going to paste to the link to #796 so it gets easier to find; I guess some people want to see it. There is stuff to be learned from it I think.

I would like wish everybody at WLTV and at related stuff a fantastic new year. Although we just get to see Gary (and a couple of others), I feel you are all doing a great job (at least Dan is), and I Love the show.

    Greetings
    Kasper

  • GREAT SHOW. Interesting topic to feature some of the more local varieties, such as callet.

  • greendragontre

Way to start the show as the bigger man Gary. Class!

  • garagar

cmaloy, I think you´re wrong. My impression is that Miquel Angel was talking about what some people in Spain (not too much but very noisy) that claims for the independence of Catalonia and the so-called “Paissos Catalans”, that also includes Balearic Islands (where Mallorca is located), Valencia and some small territories of the south of France.

I disagree with that way of thinking that is making a lot of damage to my country, and that´s the reason why I don´t understand why mixing wine with politics. It doesn´t have sense and it´s not good for the business.

PD: I apologize if my writing is not accurate, but I´m still learning English 🙂

  • TimCtheFilmGuy

Great guest! Ooo…y'all get to see my visage now with the discus powered comments.

  • NY Pete

    YEAH BABY! … J … E … T … S … Jets Jets Jets!!!

  • tommyb2

What a great guy! Everything he said about wine made sense to me – seems like a guy on my wavelength – I'd like to buy the man a beer!

  • Thanks for the quick response. This new system of commenting makes it easy to look for responses with everything being threaded. Big ups to whom ever had suggested and driven this system to be used.

I understand and respect the Laissez-faire approach; but, there are times one must interject especially when people are calling out for a response from you even if it’s pure text. Though, it would be an unfair demand to ask you to work even on your off time and surely it would make the job increasingly over demanding.

To remedy this, would it be a bit much to ask for someone that would speak on your behalf while your gone? Someone to interject and answer that is apart of the WL Staff?

    1. Negative Feedback?… forget about it, we have been listening to WLTV for years now and have learned a great deal. This is WLTV and not Entertainment Tonight, we focus on the content and opinions and we like your style… keep it up and thanks.

    2. We enjoyed your guest. Don't give up on good guests.

    3. BTW, Bill visited WL last Easter Sunday and last Monday on his visits to the area. Thanks for great staff . Kristen (I make her practice her French every time) recommended another two wines this visit. Balbec's, both 2006's: French Cahors (Barn Yard) and Argentinian Monteflores (Fruit Bomb). Please forward one well deserved at-a-girl for customer service and our thanks.

I very much enjoyed the show – learning about new grapes and new wine regions with an interesting guest. Congratulations on the Jets win and your 2 correct predictions. I appreciate that you spend the time to do the shows and not everyone will like each episode. That is their problem not yours. QOTD – I am not very familiar with Barcelona football, so I don't have any real thoughts on it versus other football teams in Spain. Thanks

  • Slow Wine Lover

Interesting episode. Miguel Angel seems like a nice guy and is typical of “new wave” Spanish wine producers I have enjoyed AN/2 a number of times, but like Gary felt the AN was less characterful and for me was unbalanced and overly oaky. Although these wines came across as less ” New World Spain” (over-extracted fruit bombs) than many on the market these days, it still amazes me when I consistently hear Spaniards speaking about making wines “in the vineyard” when most wines produced in Spain seem to lack any discernable individuality or sense of place. I'm sure many Spanish prodcers do focus a lot of work on producing characterful grapes in their vineyards. Unfortunately they seem to spoil these efforts once the grapes are bought into the winery by over extracting, fermenting too cold and over oaking their wines.

It was a shame that Miguel Angel said his vineyards are organic and biodynamic but that he doesn't like to shout about it or put it on the label for commercial gain. I agree with this statement in principle. Most biodynamic/organic burgundy producers don't state this on the labels for the same reasons as Miguel-Angel. However, I would bet my bottom dollar that Miguel Angel's wines are not biodynamic and that suggesting they are in the interview is misleading and somewhat disrespectful to certified biodynamic producers. I could of course be wrong or Miguel Angel may have been misunderstood. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Time to get off the soap box now!

  • cmaloy

My apologies. My intent was not to offend. I still think GV misunderstood him when he said Basque for the English word basic. I forget which time elapse that happened on.

On a side note, I agree with you and your English is fantastic.

  • Vinosapien

Quibia is an imaginary land! – it has no laws and no borders and anyone can join – it does not have political aspirations!!!
Quibia it's a state of mind a place where you are at peace and totally free to be yourself – Miguel Angel was in Quibia on WLTV and he considers Gary to be a fellow Quibians.

  • devinos

You're absolutely right, vamos, que tienes toda la razón.

  • devinos

You are right, there's not information about biodynamic agriculture anywhere,so it means he`s not saying the truth. He lies also saying that Anima Negra is the only wine with CALLET,there are many more here,I'm from Mallorca. He's also not saying that he's not a winemaker,it was Francesc Grimalt, the real “Soul”of Anima Negra, not anymore,he's doing now 4 Kilos and 12 Voltios on his own Winery.
I do not agree with you that he is typical of “new wave” Spanish wine producer,he is the typical Mallocan wine producer, which is very diferent.

  • vinosapien

Oye devinos these are the facts:
M.A.C. said that his wines are the only Callet wines as in “based on that grape” Now 4kilos 2007, is a blend of 50% Cabernet, 10% Merlot and then a 30% blend of Fogoneu with Callet. While 12 Volts is 30% Cabernet, 30% Syrah, 10% Merlot and then a 30% blend of Fogoneu with Callet. And no one else on the island makes Callet based wines.

As for the wine-making it is and has always been a collaborative process with several people involved as is typical for small wineries.

  • plcb

    QOTD: futbol!?!

I love that the plant doesn't care how the wine tastes.

Also I agree that Biodynamic labels are for the marketing. The customer says, “I get headaches. I need organic wine.” I try not to roll my eyes.
