Good info, nice variety of wines but the guest was a little too laid back and quiet to really knock me out

Ok, Gary, long long time lurker, finally getting off my sorry butt to give you some love! That was one of the most interesting, inspiring, and educational 30 minutes I've seen in a very long time. Cliff's passion, your respect, and the wines just made me really happy. Thanks for the thunder!

QOTD: No, I have not had the opportunity to taste anything from Croatia. Although I've tasted Gamza from Bulgaria, which had some tart cherry and sharp acid under some serious funk.

  • dave

Awesome show and awesome guest. Soft-spoken, friendly, passionate and knowledgeable guy eh.

  • Rich

Cliff was such a wonderful guest! I haven't tried any Croatian wines, but just looking the website of the wine place down the street, they have several red blends from VINARIJA DINGAC; croatia red, postup, peljesac. I have no idea what postup or peljesac is. 🙂 There's also a white (malvazija blanc) from a winery called KOZLOVIC. Going to stop by and try one tomorrow!

I also just became a Fan of the facebook CORKd page, altho' I've been a member of CORKd for awhile. Thanks Gary for always bringing the Thunder!

Jets at Chargers? Well, I live in California, so I have to say “CHARGERS!” 🙂

  • YoungDave

EXCELLENT underexplored segment to dive into for this show, and a passionate, knowledgeable guest to boot!!

QOTD: I've had a Vranac from Montenegro, and the 2007 Dignac Vinarija Plavac Mali from Croatia's coastal region. Both are relatives (or parents) of the California Zinfandel that we know, and both were interesting, fresh, fruity yet rustic with an obvious stony minerality. Enjoyable for their proce, but I have yet to find a Croatian wine that has really made me fall in love with Croatian wine. The search continues!

  • Véry interesting! Never had Croatian wines but i've to admit that I will search for some and try them out. Also with the Mallorcan wines!

Love the guests, f*** the resolutions and bring more guests!

  • We’re in business, no worries!

  • talk about two wine nerds having fun. Interesting with different grapes and different regions of the world.

QOTD:Croatian wine I had once in the late 80's visiting Istria. Can't say it impressed me much then, but today they might. Even thou there is a lot of croatians living i Sweden we have no croatian wine sold in Sweden, to my knowledge. Something for croats to ponder about 🙂

  • since a couple of months, posting reviews there at least once a week

  • Cliff

hi Rich! thanks for your feedback – much appreciated. Peljesac and Postup are both Plavac Mali wines from – Peljesec, a penninsula on Croatia's south coast where some of the best vineyards are (the 3rd wine we tasted, Bura, was also PM from Peljesac). The Postup will be a richer, bigger expression of Plavac Mali, while the Peljesac version is simple, fresh & juicy, yet with lots of earthy terroir. It s slightly off-dry (touch of sweetness) and a very food-friendly wine. At $14 give it a whirl. Cheers!

  • plcb

    QOTD: No, not yet.

Good show. Thank you for letting the guest introduce the wines since he knows how to pronounce the words correctly.

    Hi Gary:

Yes and I don’t know what I need to do. Before the switch your system recognized me automatically. Even in replying to you right now I get the “Warning: A browser setting is preventing you from logging in. Fix this setting to log in.” Is it a requisite to sign up with disqus?

  • Great show, great guest. Do we know if any wine bars are carrying Croatian wines?

QOTD: I have not tried any from Croatia yet, but now I am pumped to do so.

  • rjrausch

    Great show.
QOTD: I have not tried Croatian Wines yet, but can anyone say Croatia 3 pack? Come on Gary, hook us up with a 3 pack of the first 3 you tried. I'm in for 2.

  • CabZinPin

Hey Gary, I got to tell you, when I saw you had a guest and the show was 32 minutes, I almost didn't watch it. But being the Vaniac I am, I did anyway. I must say that this was one of the best shows in a long, long time. The two of you seemed to be on ther same page and he obviously knows his stuff. But he really sealed the deal with me when he knew the episode # and you were shocked. I am impressed.

  • Thanks for letting us know. May indeed be an IE bug. We’re looking into it.-Ro from Disqus

  • The Lurk Monster

    QOTD: no croatians yet.

Great guest, good knowledge, pleasant demeanor, what more can you ask for?

  • JayZee13

Great show and an excellent guest. While Cliff is not the most energetic guy on camera, he came with serious, serious wine knowledge and passion for what he is doing. Coolness!

QOTD: I have never had any Croatian wines. I am actually of Slovenian descent and I have tried a couple of Slovenian wines, although they were less expensive “entry-level” wines and they didn't impress me too much. I cannot recall what I had, but they were largely from indigenous grapes from Slovenia. I would love to travel to that area of the world and visit some of these wineries. Sounds very interesting.

  • Great Show. I am the Chef Owner of The Plaza Cafe in Southampton New York and am of Croatian descent. We are actually palnning on a Wine Dinner with Mr. Bibich the begining of April

  • zrm

Solid Longer episode. I certainly love it when you bring on some really knowledgeable wine people to talk about wines they know.

QOD: nope not yet maybe soon?

  • CharlieTN

Once again, never tried anything Croatian. If I see that ottocerno crno I'm certainly gonna have to grab it though!

    The beard stays!

  • Chenin

One of the finest WLTV yet GV – Croatia is a fantastic place (you must visit Dubrovnik and Cavtat when you do get out there).

QOTD – Have tasted Croatian wine, unfortunately this was when I last visited the country back in 2005 and I was a wine novice back then so have no idea what the varietal was. I remember being impressed though – and it came in close to 15 bones!

  • Krunch

Gary, Informative show, Enjoy the “Hidden Vineyards” segments. Guest was easy to listen too, Knowable and helpful. He is in love with that part of the world for sure.

QOTD: Had one Good wine and one bad wine from Croatia. But I alway try to seek out new vineyards.

Thoughts on doing a show about Brazilian wines? another Hidden Area.

  • This was my favorite WLTV episode to date. Number one – I like the longer episodes, number two – The opinions were honest by both sides, and the most important thing is the guest was the most knowledgeable guest I've seen on the program. I like when the guest can actually discuss and talk and doesn't need you to pull information out of them!

  • flo

Loved the show, GV! Great guest— I have been following Wines of Croatia on Twitter for a while. I had a Croatian boyfriend— but, I haven't had any Croatian wines yet, damn it!

  • CellarRat5

Very interesting show. I did not know that Zin had an ansestor that was in production. I work in Lodi, the unofficial Zin capital of the state, and am very excited to learn of this offspring. The commentary on this show was fantastic, one of those shows that I wish could somehow transmit pharamones though the internet. The first guest I have seen that commented back on the actual WLTV site! Props to Mott for the “smells like wine” comment, F****** hillarious. Very good show, Cliff, I will be looking for the Ottocento. Do you happen to know if there are any retailers in the Sacramento CA area?

QOTD: hope to try them very soon!

  • Jim

But where can we find them?

  • Canavia

Zin is Called Crljenak Ka?telanski(the Kashtel's[castle]Black One) in Croatia, where it originated from more than a hundred years ago, because many people left our country in search of more prosper life, and Zin is the father, or mother with variety called Dobrichich(Good One) of Plavac Mali, our most famous red variety.

it was confirmed at University of Davis, led by Carol Meredith.

  • NY Pete

    J … E … T … S … Jets Jets Jets!!! u going to hook us up with those Croatian reds?

  • manonthemoon

Great show, nice start to the week.

QOTD: No Croatian wines for me, might have to look one or two out.

  • Phredd3

LOL. Just hit the 19 minute mark. Mott, that was very funny!

  • Cliff

The Ottocento Crno is imported by Louis/Dressner (www.louisdressner.com). Call or email them and ask for it near you!

    All the best,
    cliff

  • he's good huh 😉

  • Thnx Man o Moon

  • EmZeeGee

Thank you to Gary and Cliff for a great show! It was really interesting and we're intrigued. The idea of tasting a completely new grape is very compelling.

QOTD: Not yet, but we will! Cliff did his job well!

  • Phredd3

Well, it took me a full 24 hours, but I finally finished this episode. It took me awhile to warm up to this guest, but his passion and knowledge won me over. Very nice episode, and now I find myself searching for the Ottocento Crno. No luck yet, but who ever thought I'd even be looking for a Croatian wine? Nice work, Cliff.

QOTD: Not yet, but let's see if the distributor that Cliff linked can come through….

  • patheticwinegroupie

Come on Gary and NY Pete sing along to the 70's disco beat. San Diego super Chargers. San Diego super Chargers charge, Thunder bolts and lightning, lighting up the sky… Come on guy you know the rest.

  • Cool_Dave

Gary and Cliff, great great show!!! Very nerdy. I love this kind of show. Some more please.
QOTD – No. But I am very interested in the 2007 Ottocento Crno.
Gary, I saw the paper — congrats on the Jets and the rookie! I am still waiting for some recognition for Alabama though. 😉

  • patheticwinegroupie

Do Croatian Reds taste bitter after the Jets are beatdown?

  • We need more of less known regions wines shows… That said, Cliff showed great knowledge and little spirit. Idea: ply-off the guests with some more wine before taping. 🙂
QOTD: Dingac is my fav' from the region, hard to find in USA. Last time I have had it was in Joso's restaurant in Toronto, Canada.

  • tommyb2

QOTD: Nope haven't tried any as yet but I'll get on the look out – and start reading up on the area and grape varieties! Quality stuff.

  • Glenn Porter

what an awesome guest. That was one of the best WLTV shows in a long time. Awesome sauce.

  • NY Pete

LOL … is that you Cabbie?

  • Andrew D

    Hey Guys

Thanks for a great show. Cliff's passion was unmistakable and I really enjoyed hearing a little about the state of the Croation wine industry.

QOTD: I've drunk a fair bit of Croation wine, but most of it has been there when I've been on holidays. A lot of fairly priced table wine and a couple of bottles of higher quaility stuff. Lots of potential in the are for great, great wines.

Good luck on the mission Cliff.

    Cheers Andrew

  • lawrenceleichtman

Jets weren't at all beaten down just the opposite. As your comments, newly introduced wines need to be more value driven than any of these you presented. I've had one Croatian wine in my life and it wasn't memorable so I am a big skeptic here. By the way, what happened with fewer guests? Seems like more not fewer

  • patheticwinegroupie

Look at the logo my man, I am talking about this coming Sunday, not the win over the hapless Bungles.

  • K. Muslover

Hey Gary, where can I get some Ottocento Crno. WL doesn't have it nor can I find any mention of it on WineZap.

  • billandwendywilcox

Loved this show. Eloquent and knowledgable guest. I can't wait to try a Croatian wine or better yet visit a vinyard as described. Thank you for this 30 minute adventure. First Mallorca then this show. What a year so far!! 🙂 Wendy

  • Nice show and nice pace. I liked this guest. Never knew Croatia to have wines and at that price point too.

    Three shows in 2010 = 3 guests. So much for the New Years resolution… hah!… J/K :p

  • Great show. Here in Canada the distribution of croatian wines is limited yet I have had the chance to enjoy a few of them. Hopefully I might be able to get these wines.

    Cheers!!

  • John__J

    qotd: I haven't, yet.
Thanks again Gary, love when you do episodes on lesser known varietals & wine regions. Nice to see Croatia getting their do. Dalmatia is where Viognier originated from after all. Until they have a a fairly accessible gateway wine as you guys mentioned, I see them staying under the radar for quite a while. Switzerland seems to be having the same problem. Great wines, but at higher prices, and without then really having a big gateway wine as well, I don't hear alot of people talking about Swiss wines either. Cliff was a great guest too. Your getting up and leaving your guest to talk to the camera so you could grab your wrestling figure… you're one of a kind Gary lol.
Anyway, please keep up with the unknown regions and varietals Gary, those are the best. May I suggest having a vin jaune on the show? A really rare wine, from a fairly unknown region, & easily 1 of the world's most unique wines.
