line of the day – ‘not the Oak Monster but maybe the Butter Bandit was going to come out’

Hilarious when GV picks up a ‘Really Exotic Nose’ on the last wine and asks Mott what he gets (without any hints). Nothing replies the Mottster!

  • Hahahaha Gary! I loved the “senior moment” at the end there! Too funny

The best white wine I recently had was the Afincado Tardio petit manseng, 2004 from Argentina: http://corkd.com/wine/view/25047-Afincado_Tardio_petit_manseng_2004

I got it because I was in Argentina in November and wanted a unique wine – this fit the bill because I’ve never had the varietal and it was described to me as being kind of similar to a Sauternes (which I LOVE) but having its own unique personality.

I would agree with that assessment. Its flavor struck me as having a tropical component, and also very syrupy, which I really enjoyed. Almost like candied peaches, or maybe like the peaches in a can of fruit salad that has the really sugary syrup in it, you know what I’m talking about? Also overripe pineapple (the super golden kind) is a part of that flavor profile. It did bring enough acidity to not be over sugary, which was important.

It was right up my alley, so for my own personal palate this wine scores like 97 points, I loved it. I believe it was 80 pesos or so, which is like $20 US. Highly recommended for something different.

PS – Gary, I’m sorry my Chargers are going to have to destroy your Jets this weekend. But we owe you one from our loss to you a few years back when Kaeding missed that late FG.

The Gwerts they had on Cindy killed it also.

  • DFbwp

Natrone Means UNC Chapel Hill grad. Go Heels.

  • DFbwp

Big ups to Temecula and Baja California wines.

  • Jason – let me suggest the Fetzer 2008 Riesling: http://corkd.com/wine/view/75190-2008-fetzer-riesling

My roommate literally keeps 3 of these at our apartment, JUST to give to girls he brings back on dates. The reason he has this wine: it’s delicious. Plain and simple. It’s one dimensional and fruity, and for those characteristics I’d recommend it. It’s like sweet green apples with some acidity. I’m pretty sure 100% of girls he’s given it to have liked it. And, to brag on his behalf, it’s been more than a few girls 😉

  • Not going to happen.

  • A dumb Rhein king

I don’t know if it’s old age or if you just got so pumped.

QOTD: 2007 Las Brisas. http://corkd.com/wine/view/67406-2007-las-brisas (adam976). I was making some sort of grill item in the summer when I had it. It was almost one dimensional, but the focus that it had really took me by surprise. It did one thing, but it did it very well.

  • NY Pete

keep it until the wife tells you to shave … 😛

  • NY Pete

    LOL

  • Yes, so why give scores. After watching several hundred shows, I almost feel your “point system” is irrelevant. I think the “passion scale” should not be a number type scale. Your pure love or indifference reads like a married couples conversation after 50 years of marriage-sometimes silence is golden.

  • PS, Gary, for all those having issues with IE, go to Tools>Internet Options> click the Privacy tab> then click the Sites button mid page and where theres a field to type in an address of a website, type tv.winelibrary.com (can also do winelibrarytv.com and disqus.com to be safe) and then click the Allow button. This fixed all the problems for me. Thanks for looking out for us.

  • Thanks Gary. I’ve been enjoying Wine Library TV for a couple of years now. Still a fantastic resource and damn entertaining! Here is a note from another white wine I thoroughly enjoyed this year…
2004 Weinbach Grand Cru Riesling Schlossberg
Golden yellow in color, I couldn’t wait for my first swig. This wine was so refreshing, I wanted to freeze it and make Weinbach Otter Pops so the neighborhood kids could have a more high class popsicle option. Quince, honeysuckle (who doesn’t love to suckle honey?), peaches, and rocks fill the nose with pleasing aromatics as the acidic grip takes hold of your tongue once swallowed. The crisp apple and pear balance out the acid and the minerality on the finish leaves you thinking Chablis. Dry riesling just continues to impress me. Love it.

  • was a lurker, just never liked your comment section before. good change, now i’ll post. i may even use capital letters every one in a while.

  • actually, gary doesn’t pronounce montrachet properly. in the french pronunciation the “t” is not pronounced in either spot, though it has become acceptable to pronounce it with the first t in english.

  • davidlieberman

I think you're doomed in SD :-). Why not try some wine in Temecula to keep your mood up after the beating you are sure to endure!!

  • This looks interesting. Esp since I've not had good experiences with Aussie chards.
    Will watch later

  • Holy Crap!!! What a show. A Tecmo Bowl All-Star Natrone Means reference…. Awesome!

Also, great call on the soft hair/viognier texture. When a girl has soft hair… immediately gets her a couple extra points.

QOTD: I had an Abeja 2005 Chardonnay. I'm not usually on the Chard bandwagon, but wow, the texture and the integration of oak on this wine was unbelievable. May have been my favorite chardonnay I've ever had. It helps when you have it with good food and great people.

    Comment Issues:
    1. Comments were not directly under the new episode. I had to open the episode in the “past shows” section to find the comments.
    2. Apparently “a browser setting is preventing me from logging in”. It would be nice to be told which setting I would need to “fix”.

    The show:
    1. Awesome.
    2. Although you bring on some informative guests (usually), they are never better than your solo shows.

    QOTD:
The last white wine that got me stoked was Cunundrum. I don't recal the particular vintage, since I've had a few. I really like the melon play. This is one of the few whites that I don't mind paying more than $12 for.

My question for Gary, or anyone else:
Can you suggest another white between 15 and 20 bones that will melt my face off?

  • jeffisrad

Got it! Posting a comment as a guest brings you right to the registration window… Yes!

  • nicoriesling

Francois makes great Condrieu does not he?

QOTD: 1996 Salon Champagne. I don't think the wine was so hot BUT it was a wedding gift (from the producer) and we opened it with my wife and parents for Xmas two years ago.

  • Great show. Congrats on the nephew. Are you planning any big promotion after the Jets beat the Chargers this week. I hope so.

QOTD – I would say 2006 Zind Humbrecht Riesling Heimbourg which I got from cinderella wines. I love Riesling and this one is especially good.

  • Peter how sick is that Riesling huh ?

  • Grill Factor

Great show. Gary, I don't think you've ever mentioned the interviews you did for Big Think in the fall. I happened upon them the other day and found them interesting. “Link it Up!”

  • drt999

QOTD — haven't had a really outstanding white in quite a while. I did have two Vermentinos last month, which I had not had in about 9-10 years. Both where interesting and good. One was from Raffaldini here in North Carolina — expanding my tastes!

  • ottawab

2005 Domaine Zind-Humbrecht Clos Windsbuhl Hunawihr Riesling, Alsace

Great wine I had for New Years instead of a bottle of Champagne. Great complexity that will only improve more with cellar time.

  • castello

I've been buying a few whites lately, mostly for my lady friend but the Chehalem 07 Riesling was pretty good, especially the next day. I'm about to open the other Riesling I got from Cinderella tonight and I'll let you know. It's Chilean!

  • jeffisrad

Okay… Comments are back under the episode. It's all good!

I love the show and congrats on the new nephew, any plan on coming to south fla

  • Congrats to your sister (and you) on your new family addition!

I've been a Pouilly Fume fan for many years – since my room service waiter days 25 years ago!. Sorry you weren't crazy about this one. With that grassy mineral taste, would it go well with seafood – oysters, clams, etc?

QOTD – Last white I had was a 2007 90+ Cellars Riesling. Had it with a Sunday Brunch during the holidays. Lots of fruit and tons of apple flavors. Can't say the wine thrilled me and don't know if I would buy it again – even though it was only $15.

  • winecrazy

QOTD: Hummm…..let's see…..oh, ok. I was just in Napa and I had a Miner Sauvignon Blanc and wow….it was yummy. I had it at 10:00 am when they first opened so you could say it was breakfast. Nice wine and I rarely like those types but thanks to Ian I trecked up there in the wee opening hours and did the Miner tatsing. I gave it a 91. What do you give it G man????

  • jimchem

I would leave a comment but I have nothing to say. 🙂

  • winecrazy

    Sorry…I meant Uncle “G”

Not a big white drinker…Pouilly Fume is a good wine great with caramelized scallops!

    GV–

Something about the last 10 seconds when you had your senior moment was really endearing. I just bought a chardonnay called “Yellow Tail”…not sure if you've heard of it, but it was great. Tasted like an oak tree…delicious.

  • DKBTex

Nice show Geary and Mott… Congrats on becoming an uncle!!!!!! Not much of a white wine drinker… With that said Give me a couple to try!!!! I like old world reds!!!!

    Welcome Max!
    Congratulations Uncle Gary…and family!

  • billc87

    Great energy today. Good show.
Much as I have tried to get into white wines, I can't seem to get the same slug in the jaw that I get from reds. When I drink white, it's usually some Sauv Blanc from NZ or Chile. Nice compliment to salmon.
Can anyone recommend a white under $20 that you think might sway me?
I'll try to add an avatar if I can figure out how.

  • Rich

    Great show, Gary!
QOTD: 2007 Goosecross Sauvignon Blanc. We were up in Napa, on a winetour which stopped off at Goosecross. The wine pourers poured this awesome white, which had some really bright citrus notes, some pear and lemongrass through the midpalate, and it had this great pineapple kick all along with some great acidity. We ended up buying 3 bottles, and we normally don't buy white wine!

  • C_Shorty

Pouilly-Fume is on the 2010 list. Condrieu is fantastic. I doubt I will ever pay $70 for Chardonnay, even a White Burgundy.

QOTD: White wine has been letting me down a bit in very recent times. A lot of good stuff, but nothing blowing me away. The last one to REALLY grab my attention was a Falanghina.

  • C_Shorty

Italian whites that AREN'T Pinot Grigio. Think Falanghina, Greco di Tufo. I dig Soave too. You can get that one even cheaper.

  • donniewinemaker

Luv'd the show! I was a total red wine snob until I started tuning into your show! You are right! Whites can “Bring the Thunder!” just as well as reds! QTD…Last impressive white we had was a 2007 Turnbull Sauvignon Blanc, not bad for $16! Great citrus flavors with some tropical fruits and just a hint of grassiness. Went excellent with Shrimp Penne pasta with a white cream sauce. BTW, what is your feeling on our Seahawks signing one of the greatest Jets coaches in recent memory, The one and only, Pete Carroll?

  • No New Zealand sav – thats the killer white Gary 🙂 Congrats on becoming an uncle
