line of the day – ‘not the Oak Monster but maybe the Butter Bandit was going to come out’

Hilarious when GV picks up a ‘Really Exotic Nose’ on the last wine and asks Mott what he gets (without any hints). Nothing replies the Mottster!

  • Here is a note from a recent 2006 Donnhoff Norheimer Dellchen Riesling GG Trocken I put down…

OMFG. That is all I could say after my first smell of this goldilocked beauty. Sit in my chair, eat my porridge, and sleep in my bed antyime you little vixen. Gorgeous bright straw yellow color that when swirled made you dream of that blonde 20 year old Swede you saw in Nice when you were 18. Immediate aromas of stones, white peaches, Japanese pears, and starfruit syrup keep you bottled up in that dream. Once it hits your lips, concentrated quince, citrus, and minerality pummel your taste buds into submission. The interplay between restrained sweetness and mouth shocking dryness bob and weave over your tongue as deftly as the Champ himself, Muhammad Ali. Layer upon layer of riesling complexity, density, and lusciousness made me furious for only buying 2 bottles of this Teutonic beauty.

  • Jared those first two lines are hilarious. That alone has convinced me to start reading your wine blog.

  • Natrone Means!! I remember him. Please, please beat the Chargers. You and I at the AFC Championship game? Oh, but we need to beat the Ravens first! Good luck to the Jets my man.

Great show as always, love the complex whites and will need to try the Viognier. Love the stuff.

Plus, you swallowed! You have done that what, less than 25 times? We need to organize a montage of the wines you actually “tasted.” 😉

QOTD: This is a very nice white that we have come to know around Chat Dominus as the “white crack wine” which I can procur at the local wine shop. You should get it Gary. Cantina del Taburno Falanghina 2007

Notes: Apples, peaches on a very smooth and elegant finish for such a low-priced white wine. Slightly herbaceous but not cloying or overly sweet. This is your run-of-the-mill quaffing wines that anyone (including CKCs) would really enjoy.

    Cheers!

Go Colts and Jets! That would be the creme de la creme for all of us. 🙂

First things first: Welcome to the world, Max! We're all glad to have you. Can I have your hair?

Outstanding old-school show. I love the way you mix it up. Yesterday a real nerd-factor show, and today a hard-hitting, get-in-get-out white wine sampler. Very nice. Tough when you are auditioning wines in the $50-$60 range, though. Truth be told, there just aren't many wines out there that are worth that kind of scratch.

On the other hand, I'm not one to talk. The best white I had recently came over the holidays, with our holiday fondue. 2006 Shafer Red Shoulder Ranch Chardonnay. Big, new world, plenty of oak, but still well-balanced and plenty complex. I do love it with the cheese. One of our favorite chardonnays, but it ain't cheap at forty-plus bones. I can't deny, though, that it is our go-to chardonnay for special occasions. Could we do as well for less? Maybe. But with the Shafer, I always know I'm gonna get something I love. And that, my friend, is what branding is all about.

Looking forward to the big 800.

Totally think whites are underrated. Like in the league of buddy ryan in football. Best white in a while has been a 2006 Loosen. Rocked the house, got it in a end bin at TW. Totally smoked a white Burg.

  • (D-Rod here) My favorite bottle of white recently had to be the 2002 Chateau Coutet, which was just outright delicious. Not too viscous and just the right level of sweetness and acidity that made it an absolute pleasure to drink. My non-wine-nerd girlfriend and her mother absolutely loved it as well, and it was a real crowd-pleaser. The 375ml bottle was supposed to last several days… it barely lasted two with how much I enjoyed it.

The in-law (girlfriend's mother) knows I'm big into wine, and I think I impressed her a little with the Coutet.

P.S. If we're talking about non-dessert, it was definitely the Alto Adige Gewurztraminer. It was really something else. What a nose!

  • C_Shorty

    Best review ever.

  • guymandude

Love the underrated whites, drink them all year long.Wow# 800 next, the Simpsons are @#450 and on for 20 yrs. you would be in like yr 35!

qotd; The King Estate Pinot Gris we had at the wine dinner last week was very good, straw, lemon, grassy nose, and fresh ,friuty, clean medium acid on finish.89pts.I think you liked it too?

  • P.S. GV, you're killing me with the pronunciation here. Fran-kois? Fran-suaa my friend. The cedille (ç) makes it an s sound.

  • My fiancee and I love it. We served it at a party over the holidays and it was a big hit.

  • paul nappo

Riesling called relax and for 10 bone its not that bad

  • “SHAVE IT OFF, SHAVE IT OFF, SHAVE IT OFF…”

QOTD: 2006 Domaine de l'Oratoire St Martin Côtes du Rhône Villages Cairanne Blanc Haut-Coustias. I've had l'Oratoire St Martin white wines in the past and they've never disappointed. So I brought this bottle to Thanksgiving dinner and as tradition would have it, we opened the white wine first. The bottle was gone in a matter of minutes. It was a huge hit and my relatives still believe I'm “the wine guy” of the family.

I'm living by your motto and trying new wines all the time. I'm heading to Whole Foods to see if I can find a bottle of that Croatian wine. Wish me luck!

  • Kyle

San Diego… super Chargers, San Diego… super Chargers, San Diego super Chargers!!!

I've been rocking the under $10 wines since I'm saving for a house so I while back a grabbed a few bottles of the Down Under Chard. Pretty good stuff for $4-$5. Nice acid, oak in check, pretty nice.

  • Phredd3

One of Gary's great charms is his ability to unabashedly butcher other languages. 😉

  • Gary, I think your enthusiasm for the 92pt Croatian wine was way more like it should have been a 95+ if the Condrieu was a 92.
Cheers and good show as always.

  • g-baby

QOTD: 2007 de tarczal gewurztraminer, simply because it was a very thought-filled gift.

and congrats on becoming an uncle!

  • Not sure if it's the best but really a huge fan of Treana-Marsanne/Viognier, and at $15-$20 it really rocks. Also Sanguis Acromion which is a Roussanne with Viognier…which was AWESOME…but at $70 not something I'll probably ever try again.

  • I say keep the beard.

  • U think DW? I am thinking about it

  • hmmmm the scores are sooooo secondary to the notes and seeing how I react, dont you think?

  • philct

The 04 Meyer Fonne Pfoeller Riesling is my favorite white.. ever.. Really brought the pineapple thunder!!!

Love the new comment section.. And yep, keep the beard!!

  • adrums

Nice show, and congrats on the nephew (and the J's)! Damn northern rhones are always so pricey…
QOTD: You're probably not going to like this one, but the Mount Eden '06 Estate Chardonnay, from the Santa Cruz hills, was pretty boss. Yeah, yeah, it was quite smokily oaky, but it also had loads of silky citrus and pear, with lots of length. Drank it with some pan-seared black cod and risotto while watching Season 3 of The Wire with my lady.

  • I am a jerk 🙁

  • I realllllllly hope we are hanging out next next Sunday

  • Jared great job with this review and this is what Disqus is all about and this is what blogging is all about, way to go to come here and your name links to your blog and now you will have more follwers, kudos and now u need an avatar

  • I love all of you….especially the ones with avatars and the ones that go around and “like” comments 🙂 and as for you lurkers……. 😉

  • The couple times I've had Condrieu have been fantastic experiences

  • wpggord

I thought we'd covered this before. “Francois” is pronounced fran-SWAW.

  • I am the WORST 🙁

  • DAveAll

Keep the week old beard, rounds your icon out – but not longer. Mott, don't go changing!

GHHHEEZZZUS – the price points are horrible. zzzzz. If I buy a $70 white, it's great. duh?
$20 French white isn't a 91? wow. smile. snicker. not your best showing.

I use Firefox. IE is a dinosaur.

  • QOTD : I just had the Mirassoui Chardonnay at my cousin's wedding and it totally caught me by surprise holding up to the beef dish I was having.

Side note : I would pay to see Mott shave that beard on WLTV haha

  • Keep the beard

** I have not had any problems with the new comment section at all and I really like it**

  • billwrollcia

gv, love your food references, not the typical apple, peach , lime comments. but when you come out on the wine nerd cave and hop into the chef cave. shooting out the frisee with egg, and the uni, love it, how about we build a tunnel between the 2 caves and go out and eat and drink. Thanks buddy, i was very close to buy the leeuwin estate, but now ill hold, give me another one to buy. last fun white i had was last week, k vintners viognier . charles smith rocks, i remember and loved that eppy.peace brother.

  • patheticwinegroupie

Loved hearing Natrone Means' name again. If only he had taken care of his body. What a shame. Great show, we love the whites.

To heck with the question of the day, instead lets talk Charger football.
Who is the top rated qb in the afc over the past two years? That's right Rivers. Compare his numbers to that overrated prettyboy from beantown and you will see who is payton's real rival. Jets are going to blitz the Chargers and you know Rivers qb rating when blitzed this season 104.8. Bring on Sunday!

  • Dan Caragher

    Gary –

“Killer whites…” great show! I am definitely with you in being in a rut with reds. I've really been into the white and somewhat surprisingly the “oak monster” chards.

QOTD: Best white…well it's a tie between the Leeuwin Chard that you tasted and Merry Edwards 2007 Sauvignon Blanc. I had the chard at a great restaurant called Anneke Jans in Kittery, ME! The best! The Merry Edwards wine I had at Christmas with fam, so it was amazing, I think one of the best SB's I've had in a while, aside from the Natilus SB.

Congrats on the new nephew, be safe! RIP IT!

  • It's so funny you mentioned your old shows, I just recently watched one from a few years back and it's amazing how docile you were. I couldn't watch you now if you were still like that.

As for my most favorite recent white wine…I am guilty as charged. I have immensely expanded my palate in 2009 almost exclusively red. I think because I haven't been drinking wine for that long, I'm tired of them as you seem to be right now.

So…I just reviewed on Cork'd a 2006 Petite Sirah that I loved. Big Rock Red I believe. For some reason when I watch your episodes featuring Reds, I find myself running out to the store to pick up a bottle right then.

I look forward to expanding my palate with whites in 2010.

On a separate note, I will be pulling for the Jets this weekend however I expect that they'll have their hands full. Love playoff football weekends.

  • Gary,

I've read your book and have become a member of Vaynernation and a fan of winelibrarytv ever since. I don't drink wine nor am I old enough to buy it but somehow I keep tuning in for more winelibarytv because of the passion in the content. That's really what keeps the vayniacs comin back for more.

    Keep the beard

Hopefully Braylon won't go back to his old ways with the Browns (my team) and drop too many balls this weekend. Good Luck Jets

  • amgryger

QOTD: Most interesting white wine recently: a late harvest Romorantin!

2002 François Cazin Cour-Cheverny Cuvée Renaissance

Beautiful nose with big aromatics: melon rind, pear, green tea and a bit of nuttiness. Golden color in the glass. Good weight on the palate with a touch of sweetness. Complex. High, well integrated acidity and a medium long to long finish. Excellent.

    A couple of honorable mentions:
2004 Henri Prudhon & Fils Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chenevottes
2002 Domaine de la Bongran (Thevenet) Viré-Clessé Cuvée Tradition

  • wneslage

QOTD: I have enjoyed Washington states', Covey Run Riesling…but am looking forward to trying a few that I have recently gotten in from WL.

GV, I wished you had several of the ones that you have tasted in the last couple of episodes…Pls let us know when you get them in!! We have some great games on tap this weekend! Hope Cowboys can pull it off, but I hate them going against Favre! Sorry GV, your J-E-T-S will be going down in flames against SD!

  • Kirk

I think perhaps one of the most interesting wines I've had in the last 6 months was a 1976 Auslese Riesling from Germany. It was gifted to me by my former boss and then brought to a small tasting shortly there after. There is something special that happens with whites as they age and take on more complexities…I have to say that I was instantly a fan. Other whites that need attention are the Musar Blancs from Lebanon. I had a 95 Musar Blanc last March that was the best white wine of the year for me. Below are my notes from the 76 Auslese…

1976 Bassermann-Jordan Forster Jesuitengarten Riesling Auslese (Germany, Pfalz) 10/23/2009:

This was almost amber in color with a great nose of lemon, clementines, petrol, and crushed granite. In the mouth this was round and full with amazing acidity for a 33 year old wine as flavors of honey, citrus, and minerals danced across the palate for a long 30+ second finish. Outstanding!

  • lidapink

I was at a restaurant in DC a few months ago when I discovered Xaramant Txakolina, 2007, Txakoli de Alava, Spain. I love the big acid wines and this one was fabulous. Lots of grapefruit, nice minerality, and a little effervescent to make things interesting. Fantastic with seafood. Not sure if you get to DC, but OYA was a great place for food and wine. 🙂

  • Generalcrankshaft

Jets fan….definitely.. I've been in the Air Force 28 years. Let's just say I know F-15s, F-4s, B52s, B-1s, and the best…A-10s up close. No, I don't fly. Nuf about me. GV..I'd love to see you do something. Considering your pursuit of quality vs. price, would you ever consider an on-line tasting of 100 point rated wines? I'd love to see your critique. Could I hook you up to see a 100 point military jet up close?

  • Whatever happened to the “original” Jet's Bucket, or has Miller paid you to use that bucket? Very tight show, keep it up!

    LOL “Don't say wine” hahahaha

QOTD: The last white wine I had was champagne for new years, sorry but I like my reds in the winter and will drink more whites as it warms up. It was a great night, the friends brought “name brands”; we had some Korbel, and NV Clicquot, it was more about the company than the wines. Sooooo glad to be over with 2009 and the last decade!

  • Gary – I love the way you pour wine bottles. Restaurants are always delicately putting the wine in the glass and you just slam it in there. Its like you would competely upend the bottle if you could.

PS My blog is taking off thanks for the advice and encouragement.

  • lol, I wouldn't go that far. If anything I'm surprised you pronounce things like Chassagne-Montrachet with such ease and miss something much more common. I'd be much more offended if you butchered things in Spanish, anyway. lol, I kid I kid. I'm sure your Spanish pronunciations are better than my Russian.

  • JasonGonzales

This is my second post… I am no longer a lurker. So when you talk lurker trash, I am excluded! Ha ha.

    Anyway,
QOTD: 2008 Kungfu Girl Riesling – From Washington State.

I JUST started drinking wine. And so far, this white wine has DOMINATED all of the red wine I've had. I thought the nose right out of the bottle smelled exactly like butterscotch. I mean exactly! The nose in the glass is citrusy and with some fruity elements. I liked the mouth feel and the dryness. The finish lasted for about 15 seconds… which is what I enjoyed most about this wine. I bought this so my girlfriend and I could share it. It turns out I enjoyed it much more than she did…

A little help please! Does anyone have a recommendation for a shameless fruit bomb?! I don't care if it's one dimensional. I haven't had any luck finding something my girlfriend enjoys… She loves sweet and fruity drinks. I'm just looking for a gateway wine. Thanks!

  • DFbwp

QOTD: Had a Bin 222 Wyndham Estate Chardonnay and my beloved told me to taste it blind. “A buttery chardonnay,” I said. The wine knowledge is good for something, I guess.

Not rolling high enough for the $60 Viognier, but I did shell out $5 for a Honey Moon from Trader Joe's recently. Like Ms. Buehler, I was once in a wine family and never paid for great bottles. I still don't want to jump up, but we'll see what 2010 brings.

  • DFbwp

Had Covey Run Merlot. Was disappointed. Maybe Riesling is better.

  • DFbwp

If you ever get the chance to do some education on French pronunciation, grab it. It's not that hard once you get the basics down. But it is part of your style not to worry about pronunciation. You might lose some of that fun edge.
