90/100

line of the day – ‘not the Oak Monster but maybe the Butter Bandit was going to come out’

Hilarious when GV picks up a ‘Really Exotic Nose’ on the last wine and asks Mott what he gets (without any hints). Nothing replies the Mottster!

Yes it's almost as if we've got a teacher that thinks no one can get a high A. 8>) But seems as if all wine critics are reluctant to go high nineties for fear someone is going to pronounce them guilty of “grade inflation”!

  • Phredd3

There, Gary, just for you: An avatar. Bonus points if you can figure out why I chose that one.

  • patheticwinegroupie

has anyone checked on Ian at winelibrary. He probably is curled up under his desk rocking back and forth holding his Bengals “who da” program. What happened to Carson Palmer he used to be great and now can't hit the broad side of a barn.

Oh yeah this is wine program… I just love Condrieu.

if you win you're own “like” contest, I'm yelling Bullshit

opened the 2006 Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Heimbourg again this past Saturday night. Very similar to my first bottle which I had at 91: golden yellow. Petrol, pineapple and floral. Med body with good acidity but not racy. Great oily mouth feel. Good citrus with mineral aspects. Maybe not the most interesting wine, but great none the less.

  • Except that we all know that the high scores are what “move product” in the wine industry, for better or worse, no? You have said before on WLTV that you see that effect at Wine Library, if I recall?

  • JoshL

I really like the way you're mixing it up so far this year, every episode is fresh with different delivery methods. almost laughed at the butter bandit…really laughed at “don't say wine” to Mott 😛 Adding the Condrieu to my to do list.

QOTD: Though I drink more champagne (since I love it w/ sashimi [low carbs and all….]) than white wines that we're discussing, I really liked the wine I tried at Alpha Omega at Napa last year during a vacation, their 2006 chardonnay. It exhibited great acit/fruit balance (grapefruit i remember it was, which is one of my fav's), long lasting, and just a tiny tiny hint of the butter bandit (damn!) to provide a nice texture at the end…. but what got me really excited was the nutty content (like a really oily one…) in its bouquet and taste, which added that layer of complexity. At 40 bucks a bottle, it's no bargain by any means, but couple the beautiful vineyard (very serene, but probably artificial in reality…seemed a bit commercialized now that i think more about it…but that's Napa in my experience) they had with a very pleasant vacation, it's the most pleasant white wine experience I've had in recent months.

I don't know about you guys, but I'm not tired of the “smells like wine.” I might make a t-shirt of it….

Not a huge white fan or chard fan BUT am lovin the stuff coming from Hanzell Vineyards! The 2006 I had this weekend was more white burgandy. Even better at Christmas the winery sold it at half off. Total show stopper and winner at a 15 person dinner. Even the tour at the winery is an A+ .The wine as Helen Buehler via her tweets would say tastes like awesome lol GV thoughts on pioneers like Hanzell?

  • davemcneilly

Jason – how about Moscao di Asti?

  • GenericEric

A nice value wine to give a try is Broadbent Vinho Verde (Can be found for around $7.00 on the left coast). Alcohol is listed at 9% which makes it a great light outdoor summer wine for those get togethers with friends and family. This vinho verde leans towards the bubbly side of the curve.

Hope to see you at the Jets/Chargers game on Sunday. Just picked up my tickets and ready to Amtrak my way down from LA to SD to see if my Jets can do some damage to the locals.

    Go Jets!!!

  • JoshL

I must try the Kungfu girl…

Try one of Argyle's Pinot Noirs from Willamette Valley….it's a well made wine in my opinion, so it deserves more than to be called a fruit bomb, but it is highly fruit driven. I suggested it to my friend who was taking his wife out for a wedding ann., and despite not being wine drinkers, they loved it, which tells me it is indeed approachable.

  • scottEJ

Thanks, G. Like yourself, I don't understand how people can talk down on white wines and and label them differently than the others. F'em..more for us.

QOTD: Ironincally, a fantastic viognier from WA. 2005 McCrea, Ciel du Cheval Vinyard. A WOW wine with an expansive mouthfeel of tropical fruit, blooming flowers, and layers of creme freche. A very complete wine from the 1st smell to the last second of a very long and honest finish. I'd put it up against most any Rhone white that I've come across.

  • pmase

Big fan of the white wine shows featuring wines from France, would love to see some White Bordeaux reviewed in the future.

QOTD last white wine I had was 07 K Vintners Viognier on Saturday, citrus and pears on the nose bright acidity, honeysuckle and stone fruit on the palate. A great viognier for under $20.

Speaking of white wines I am looking for some really good White Burgundies and Chablis and under $30, anyone have any recommendations?

  • JasonGonzales

    Josh,

Thanks for the recommendation! I just found if on Winelibrary fro $24. I will defiantly give that a go. Also, if you try the Kungfu girl make sure to smell that little bit of air right when you open the bottle. I couldn't stop thinking of butterscotch. Let me know if you pick that up or if I'm just crazy.

    Thanks again for the recommendation!

  • Phaser

I tried a Riesling, never had any before, still quite new to this.
Had it at dinner, the wife boss made chicken and dumplings. It
was Schmitt Sohne 2007 and I liked it. I thought it matched just
    right. Good show.

  • JasonGonzales

    Dave,

I just found a bottle of Moscato d'Ast online at my local wine store. I think this is going to be perfect. It's very low in alcohol and it's a desert wine. I think she's going to love it. Plus, I haven't had an Italian wine yet so it will be new for me!

I think you nailed it with this. Thanks Dave.

  • Hanzell is legendary, loved their '91 Chard…

  • JoshL thnx bro for the feedback, these comments are for that and I am reading them all!

  • Favorite whites…I'm going to go beyond WINE, and go REGION on this one: Campania. Falanghina, Greco di Tufo, Fiano di Avellino….three amazingly solid wines, from the same region, with three distinguished flavors/textures. Mastro makes some solid wines, but I prefer the Feudi di San Gregorio. I've actually preferred older vintages on the Grego & Fiano..

  • rjrausch

QOTD: 2007 Don Pascual Viognier Reserve. It was well priced at 14 bones and was really clean and crisp with some vanilla pear flavors and a toasty oak nose. Well worth the price and now that Im thinking of it I might go buy some more.
I have been on a big white kick lately so I will have to track down some Condrieu to try, Great show again.

  • Askold Shegedyn

Best recent white is actually a Cindarella wine. The Zind-Humbrecht Reisling Heimbourg 06 which has the most gun-flint nose of any white I have tried. Very creamy with a nice mineral finish. BTW I actually am becoming a Jets fan. I like the intensity of the team. Wish the Giants showed more D which the Jets actually have.

  • Let me just preface this by saying that I'm not a big white wine drinker, but I'm becoming one. And when I go to the store to buy wine I get caught by labels and sale stickers. As a matter of fact, it's just like how you described wine buyers walking into your dad's store when you were 16… I swear I just stand there BEGGING for direction.

That being said I really enjoyed this 2008 Pinot Grigio Fontana D'Italia recently (pretty silver label…). My husband was making dinner (RARE!) and I ran to the store to pick something up to celebrate. It… was on sale.

Gary: Please continue to pronounce François the way you do. Unless you're AROUND someone named François (that would be embarrassing), but otherwise, don't stop. It just makes me smile. You totally made our night! You kick ass (and not just 'cuz of the François thing).

  • laurieinvt

QOTD: d'Arenberg The Stump Jump 2008 Sticky Chardonnay Adelaide. Actually, it's the only white we've had recently and an impulse buy while picking up dinner at a local (wonderful) deli shortly after Christmas. Nothing but yummy, a dessert all by itself!

You just leave Mott's beard alone, now! Also, you should keep yours, with Lizzie and Misha's permission, of course! 😉 And congrats on your new nephew!

  • amgryger

In the under $30 price range look at the lesser known white burg AOCs, like Rully, St Aubin, and Vire-Clesse for example.

  • davemcneilly

Cool. Enjoy. And it's low alcohol to boot, which may or may not be a good thing….. 😉

    Dave

  • JasonGonzales

JoshL said: “really laughed at “don't say wine” to Mott”

    I second that.

  • thnx Erica for the support !

  • John__J

qotd: A A Domaine Schoffit chasselas from Alsace. Loved it, another great wine from a barely talked about varietal
    Congrats on the new nephew!
Gary, a vin jaune would be a great way to get chaotic up in your piece & have something new on the show! How about it? I've seen you put plenty of white, red and rose, wines on. How about throwin a YELLOW wine (vin jaune) on the show?

  • davemcneilly

QOTD Drinking it right now: Pewsey Vale The Contours Riesling 2003, from Oz, with sushi (Uni, in fact). Love the chalky, dusty nose, the flavours of lime, and stone (maybe limestone!) and the focused backbone of acid – lonngg finish by the way.

Other candidate: FX Pichler Riesling Smaragd 2003 Durnsteiner Kellerberg (these types of names prohibit discussion on Twitter!). A late harvest riesling from Austria. Full-bodied a la Alsace, but with razor sharp acidity, touch of residual sugar, and finish that went for minutes. Went instantly to the taste bank. Expensive, but a worthy experience. Less money than most concert tickets nowadays, and as memorable.

    Gotta try some Croatian next…..

  • thecreepyguyinthecorner

jeez… I'm not sure how I feel about being called out of the shadows… but it worked!

As of late, for value whites I tend to look for blends… The Pine Ridge Chenin-Viognier always seems to fit the bill (although I'm not in love with the most recent vintage). I also have been enjoying the 2007 Estival from Uruguay.
On the higher end, Trebbiano from Masciarelli, Collio Bianco from Zuani, and Zierfander from K. Alpart.
But the most interesting white I've tasted as of late would have to be Channing Daughters 2007 Meditazione, a crazy blend of Tocai Friulano, Sav. Blanc, Muscat, Pinot Grigio, and Pinot Bianco that is fermented with the skins… the result is something that blows my mind… you can spend a lot of time realizing that you will never fully comprehend all the smells, flavors and food pairing possibilities this wine delivers. Can only compare it to a Chateau Musar wine but much more complex and fruit heavy. If you get your hands on it make your friends taste blindfolded.
Tasted with the winemaker… this winery is growing some very interesting varietals that they believe to be best for Long Island. Living and tasting here, I think they are on the right path.
GO JETS… GO G.V. > you rock… keep the beard until sunburn season… then it's too late!

  • XpensiveWino

Good show. Nice to see you back in the “Thunder Saddle”..solo 😉 I must say I do love Condrieu, when I can find it. I would like to point out, that in nearly 800 episodes, there has never been one show dedicated to domestic sparklers! This was my new years show request and I will continue to ask until it happens. I think it is short sided to only give bubble love to the French and Spanish (I know you're fond of the Cava).

QOTD: The best bottle of white wine I've had recently would be the 2007 Shafer Red Shoulder Ranch Chardonnay. Here is why; It was a beautiful friday afternoon in October, sitting on the patio at Shafer. The RSR if you've never had it is a tremendous bottle of Chard. Unlike many Cali Chards RSR is flinty and acidic with good texture. I shared this experience with my lovely wife 10 years to the day we were married. Finally to top it all off Elias Fernandez came out a spoke with us for a while! Hope she doesn't read that part.

  • Congrats Liz, congrats Max, congrats the Jets, and congrats the Arizona Cardinals for actually giving us a wild card game worth watching.

Have you considered just going for the goatee? You could be Evil Gary for a few days and sing the praises of Beaujolais Nouveau …

THREE great whites I had in the past few months:

First, a 2005 Lucien Crochet Le Chene Sancerre, had last week with spaghetti (olio and a megaton of aglio). Thought it might be dead, but it was all about silk and subtlety, and a nice contrast to the last wine I had with the same dish – 2006 Tabali Sauvignon Blanc from Chile. So aggressively vegetal you'd think it was a Carmenere or a Chinon if you couldn't see it was a white.

But the most impressive white was the Quinta do Cabriz Encruzado (LC 46425). It had weight, it had really nice unripe nectarine flavors, it had a little mineral kick at the end, it had powerful aromatics, and it in general kicked ass.

I loved it, I tweeted about it, I bought some more, I took it to a holiday party so everyone else could marvel at it, and they loved it too.

    See you next month.

  • audiofan

Best whites of '09 (from memory, in no particular order)

    Cayuse Viognier 'Cailloux Vyd.' 2006
    Krug Vintage 1990 (the WOTY)
    Spottswoode Sauvignon Blanc 2006
    W. Fevre Chablis 'Les Pereuses' 2005 (too young but still exceptional)
    Haut-Brion blanc 2001

Would be interesting to see a show on:
Hermitage blanc vs. Bordeaux blanc (blind, from comparable vintages).

  • larbear

Gary – I finally had an occasion to open up the Nun Vinya dels Taus. It took me two days to finish it and it developed a very nice grapefruit finish. I really got a kick out of going back to your episode and taste it with you. My mother in law is now a big fan. I cant wait for her next visit so we can open the other bottle. When can we have some more 2006.

  • audiofan

Its the “under $30” part that presents the problem.

  • GV great show! I almost bought the Leeuwin Chardonnay recently as I fell in LOVE with the 04 Leeuwin Estate Artist Series Cabernet that I bought from you for 30 bones!!! (get more of that in please). But for $70, I think I'll take a pass. Congrats on JETS, 800 and MAX! twitter.com/cabwhore

Recently I visited the wine tasting fundraiser for a local restauranteur and wine merchant Armand Martinotti. The man loved food and wine and had several cellars around the Portland area. The tasting featured over 200 bottles of wines aged from 1959-1990. For the most part it was a red wine tasting. I was rushed to taste through the older reds in a somewhat mad rush to not miss anything before it was gone. I didn't get a chance to spend much time tasting whites from Burgundy. 1959 Sauternes Chateau Suduiraut was one of the close kept secrets on the desert table. Submerged in ice water, people had not recognized the bottle which was half full. The wine was medium gold colored, teetering on the viscous side, it retained it's acidity and was a mouthful of fresh honey, fresh cut peaches with a nice tart on the side of the cheek. I felt like the wine had out lived all the other wines in the tasting. Amazing for me it was the first time I tasted wines that old so I was pleasantly surprised.

Congrats on the success. Thank you for all the effort on this amazing concept you've created. Keep moving those cases.

  • Steve_T

seems to work for me in Internet Explorer.
QOTD: Marquis Goulaine Cuvee de Milenaire 2003. It's a dry muscat from the Loire Valley which in itself wasn't particularly special, but what made it fun for me was sharing it with my mother. It was an experience as neither of us had ever drank a dry muscat. We had it with a wonderful whole roated red snapper.

  • Dominic C.

QoTD: 2004 Clos Poggiale Vin de Corse
This was indeed the wine that has really set the bar pretty high for what has been a very pleasant experience. The focused citrus scent loaded with lemon, lime, and other with a sense of minerals and complexity that was harmonious through and through. The acidity was on focus that had carried on beautifully to the finish by which was long.

This wine was the first I have ever considered of buying a case of, but that's not much to say since I've only got into wine early last year.

  • gomestar

Gary, great episode. The last 13 or so out of 15 wines I've had have been whites, mostly the very under rated Italians (Vermentinos from Bolgheri and Sardinia, Falanghina, Gavi, Roero, etc.).

QOTD: my girlfriend's anniversary gift to me – 2005 Didier Pur Sang with a dinner she made of scallops, Bronzino, and calamari. This wine was sensational. As Didier's last wines hit the market, PLEASE taste one of them and talk a little bit about the impact he made on the region of Pouilly Fume. Or, even better, get some at Wine Library, I'll pick up a few bottles.

  • NY Pete

    Congrats Uncle Gary!

  • Trying more and more whites this year for sure.. Gaining some Viognier knowledge cause of a past WLTV episode. this one probably out of my price range (for now)..

QOTD: Enjoyed a 2007 Domaine Zind Humbrecht Riesling Brand Vieilles
Vignes @ Zind Humbrecht in Alsace with Olivier H. The experience was so much fun and enjoyable that this wine probably tasted better because of it.. I wish you all get the opportunity to drink wines @ the estate with the wine maker(s).. unforgettable.

  • AnthonyManzalji

Try Domaine Frederic Gueguen. In 2007 the made 3 Chablis ranging from 22 to 30 with two other 1ers at 34 and 38. These wines were showing well last summer when I tasted through Scott Paul's Burgundy Imports here in Oregon. Hopefully this helps.

  • fanglangzhe

Best white I've tried over last 6 months was Gran Sasso 2008 Pinot Grigio Terre di Chieti purchased for US$8.

  • WineWoman

    Congratulations Uncle Gary!!
QOTD: I've had a number of not so good white wines lately, but did expand my palate by trying a pinot bianco and definitely would buy more of them. I also had a Red Tail Ridge Riesling(NY) that was excellent for the money. It reminded me somewhat of a very memorable Christmas Eve wine, that I haven't been able to get unless I travel to the winery to buy it—which I actually might do. Even my friends remember it from at least 5-10 years ago–Red Newt Cellars Reserve Riesling. Most recently I received a 2002 Jura as a gift, about the time you showed a Paris? episode with an older white wine. This wine might have been stored improperly or too old for it's time. It was like drinking Dry Sack Sherry–very nutty–wasn't my cup of tea–though I like all kinds of Sherry–just not my aged wine disguised as one.

  • boomy13

Nice show GV. The last white wine I had was a French bottle of Sauv. Blanc, 2007. Dont know producer, sorry. The bottle was a gift at a friends house that didn't like white. Madness, I know. It was actually my host-Mother in Japan, where I spent last semester. I'm still a sucker for Sauv. Blanc in general however, and crave them over any other white.

  • philct

Having 2 Blenheim Viogner 08 sent my way to try.. Hoping this brings some thunder as my wife is so picky with the whites…

  • Yes delizioso! I recently had the Falanghina and love it!!

  • AnthonyManzalji

Thank you for the recommendation I have tried a Syrah with a small blend of Viognier from Ciel du cheval. I haven't tried this particular wine producer but if you haven't already heard about this amazing vineyard in the Red Mountain ava in eastern Washington. I am very excited about the fruit coming from this region. As you know Washington placed remarkably high in the WS this year so I'm not that surprised that people will start to look for Bordeaux style reds, Northern rhone reds, and even the first Certified Brunello clones from Montalcino(VCR6) as well as Viognier. Keep an eye out for this up and coming star.

  • Great show GV!! Congrats on being blessed again with a little bambino in your family!! I totally agree about white wines that they are under rated! I have been trying to expand my pal and am finding some interesting ones through your guidance!! My favorite whites are from Italy of course, Tocai Fruiliano, Bianco, anything from Trentino Alto Adige I can go on + on!!!

QOTD: Recently enjoyed a Feudi di San Gregorio Fiano di Avellino 2006 Campania, just by accident but what an amazing wine! Layers on layers of tropical fruit, citrus and crispness. Full-bodied with great concentration and I love the long sumptuous finish. Delizioso!
