90/100

line of the day – ‘not the Oak Monster but maybe the Butter Bandit was going to come out’

Hilarious when GV picks up a ‘Really Exotic Nose’ on the last wine and asks Mott what he gets (without any hints). Nothing replies the Mottster!

  • Cool episode GV. I am a big fan of Disqus and run it on every site/blog I run.

QoTD: I was at the Napa Valley Grille in Paramus last week (ref. Episode #571) and I had a flight of three great whites. The one that stood out the most was the 2007 Robert Mondavi Fume Blanc. The nose was soooo awesome. I felt like I was smelling an early morning spring mist. I couldn't get over it.

    J-E-T-S Jets Jets Jets!

  • jasonmalumed

Dude, gimme some uni all up in my grill piece now haha.

QOTD: Had a glass of 2006 Feudo di Santa Tresa Rina Ianca Sicilia at a wine bar this past weekend. A real interesting blend of Grillo and Viognier from Sicily. The wine itself… not too crazy. What was crazy was the nose of it… First wine I've ever had that smelled like what your pee smells like after you eat asparagus. You guys know what I'm talking about??? Anyone else know of any other wines with this going on? Let me know, because I would be PUMPED to smell em, not that I like smelling asparagus pee or anything like that…

  • Hey Gary – You ever notice that viognier often smells of fruit loops cereal? being a cereal fan, I thought you might understand that reference.

QOTD: On the high end: FX Pichler Gruner Veltliner Smaragd Loibner Berg 2007 – the density and weight, plus the minerality and acidity make this one of the best whites I've ever had!

On the every day side: 2007 Pine Ridge Chenin/Viognier – a great display of two varieties that normally don't see much success in California (outside of some good Paso Viognier)

Edit: I forgot a great Larkmead Fruiliano I had a few years back at the winery. Just exceptional.

  • gawineguy

I agree… wasn't it Gary screaming about Anderson Valley and having a sparkling wine? Roederer Estate is Anderson Valley. Regardless, a domestic bubbles show would certainly be entertaining. When aren't the bubbles a treat?

  • A great entry white burg would be the Olivier Leflaive “Les Setilles” Bourgogne Blanc. Its a blend of 40% Meursault which shines when the wine is on the colder side (think crisp lemon/lime minerals) and 60% Puligny-Montrachet which the wine really shows off when it gets a little warmer towards the end of the bottle (think minerals, nuts, apples with a touch of oak). Absolutely a great representation of affordable white burg at around $20. It should also be fairly easy to find.

yo gary, love your show and I'm glad you like us here in O-H-I-O. I'm not a bungal fan and glad the J-E-T-JETS won last weekend and good luck with SD you're gonna need it :), anywho, I'm new with the wine gig and looks like I'm gonna get into it pretty heavy…like working in a wine store in the not to distant future, so what books do you suggest I read to get brought up to speed so I can at least appear not to look and sound like a complete idiot?
    keep up the good work,
    grecian

  • Great show on whites. I've been drinking reds to expand my pallet, but whites are GREAT!!!!

QOTD: I had an '08 Crios De Susana Balbo Torrontes from Argentina – and LOVED IT! It's like Viognier on steroids! Great nose and mid-pallet/finish. And at 13.5%, I couldn't taste the heat.

  • MIchael C in MKE

Loving the integration of technology! I don't know what's better, the show or the website?

You seemed particularly hyper this episode, which is great. Maybe because your team is in the playoffs. My team got robbed by those slouches in Arizona. Good luck in San Diego.

QOTD: The last great white I had was sparkling. I guess that means I haven't had a good white wine since New Years… Bummer.

  • apetasticaL

almost at 800, GV! you got this!

i watched the J-E-T-S play on saturday. while i'm a virginian & a *sigh* redskins fan by birth, i was cheering for the jets during the game!

thus is all. OH! & i tried my first malbec tonight. new wine every time i go to the store, per recommendation by my good friend at winelibrary! *winks*

  • apetasticaL

oh! & congrats, hun. (i commented before i watched. haha.) being an uncle(aunt, in my case) is great!

  • XpensiveWino

Bubbles are always a treat! Especially in my house, my wife loves bubbles, especially Schramsberg. I'm glad to have someone else on board my crusade. There are so many fantastic bubbles in CA, OR, WA, and NM it seems a shame not to do ONE episode on domestic bubbly! Take care my friend.

What would you be pairing them with?

  • Michael D

    Gary,

QOTD: At a recent ?Connoisseur Wine Dinner,? on a cruise ship, the first course was Alaskan Dungeness crab cake, served with a Louis Jadot 2004 Meursault, Cotes de Beaune, which was a perfect combination. The wine was deep golden colored, from aging in oak, but it was complex for a chardonnay, with some vegetal notes on the nose and the palate. All four couples at our table were self-proclaimed red wine lovers, and all four couples loved this white wine. There were 5 outstanding wines served during that dinner, and this one really stole the show.

  • Cellar Rat

    Congrats on the unclehood!

Really gotta get a Villard Condrieu one of these days…

QOTD: Toss up between a Baumard Quart des Chaume 2003 (absolutely stunning as usual even if it was infanticide), a Zind-Humbrecht Gueberschwihr Gewurtz, also an 03 (really interesting), and a Baton Chard 06. All totally different and very enjoyable.

  • The latest white was the 2007 Yalumba, Eden Valley, Viognier.Great floral nose with a viscosity like 20/50 motor oil(a good thing). I am happy for your sister and family with the arrival of Max.

  • Hey guys, do you know of any white wines that would go really good with a nice bold cigar. Reds are very easy but I always stugle to find a good white that goes well with cigar. Any suggestions I would love to know. Thanks!

  • PatentDan

QOTD 2006 Pride Chardonnay – excellent acid, ripe fruit, hint of butter and oak, well balanced. From Napa – that's right, Napa, home of the big red (and we ain't talkin' gum).

  • Tom

I was roughly 20yo in 1974. BARSAC. The fragrance was like my mom's grape vine in the fall, and turning leaves. It was golden. Crisp. Transpositional magic. I made sure I remembered the name BARSAC. Someone captured the vineyard in that bottle.

  • QOTD: 2007 Skillogalee Trevarrick Riesling, Clare Valley, South Australia

    Hello lau1

I bought it nearby Løkken, Denmark (www.ep-vin.dk). I think they’re sold out by now, but they may still have a few 2007 Puligny-Montrachet 1’er Cru “Les Clavvoillons” in store. .. I think at the same price: 215 DKR.

kind regards, Isak Broe, Vraa, Denmark

  • Anonymous

I really need to open one of mine soon!

  • Anonymous

Perhaps here? 39,90 Euro for 75cl. (2007 Folatierès/2007 Clavaillons). Also 1/2 bottles available for 20 Euro.

  • ib71

    Good show, interesting wines.

QOTD: 2007 Domaine Jean Louis Chavy, Puligny-Montrachet 1'er Cru, “La Folatieres”. A definate steal (bought in Denmark) for US $ 41. Very elegant wine.

Tired of re-signing in after every post and/or every few minutes, so I’ll just say that I found the 2007 Covey Run Riesling Late Harvest Reserve rather ‘meh’ DrT999

  • Anonymous

    pretty please?

  • Anonymous

I shaved mine once, and the wife thought for amoment a stranger had invaded the apartment

  • Anonymous

    I’ve seen it, but haven’t tried it . . . yet!

  • J Crazy

2007 Ch. Guiraud Brdx blanc sec. Dude, this wine ripped my face off from day one and it's one of the only wines that I've bought by the case. It's a fabulous wine that really is best drunk at just above cellar temperature. What I absolutely love about this wine is how it evolves in your mouth as you drink it. When you first smell it you get a lemon custard aspect mixed with other citrus and mango. Then you take a sip and feel the fullness of the fruit that comes off a little sweet. I has weight in the mid-palate and keeps growing in richness; then, BAM MAAFUGGA!! you get this ripping acidity that comes through like a damn hurricane, clears out the tropical fruit that was present before and takes you into a wonderfully long finish with that lemon custard you could pick up on the nose. This wine is all mighty and would pair with anything from a seafood salad to steak or horse tartare and everything in between. It was even mad crazy good with a cigar I had a few weeks ago. This was my favorite wine of 2009 and, let me just tell you, the wines of 2010 have some damn work in front of them if they want to topple this rock star. What puts the icing on the cake is that it's only $25.

  • kendalT

    Congrats Max!

Watching you have to pan the Leeuwin was heartbreaking. It's so sad when you are really wanting a wine to scream, then it just doesn't live up to the price. I've had one Condrieu in my life, its a pricey region, but what an experience! The floral tail end was amazing. Like putting my face in a bouquet of flowers, without all the sneezing.

QOTD: The most amazing white that I've ever had was a Verdicchio (and not very expensive). It had the perfect balance of minerality, fruit, and the gorgeous weight on the palate. I wrote the producer down… someplace that I can't find anymore.

  • “Pan”? Didn't he give it 90+? That's “outstanding”.
Living up to the price is a different discussion that shouldn't be a factor in the initial score/analysis of the wine itself.

  • Ron

Congratulations on becoming an uncle Gary!

I can only imagine how excited you are. I wish the best of health for Max. Also it looks like tomorrow will be another big day for you. The big 8 0 0. Before you know it you will hit 1000 episodes. Congrats on everything.

  • wneslage

Have not had the Late Harvest, though saw it on their website…Thanks for the heads up! Will be cautious on that on.

  • wneslage

I agree with you on the Merlot(plus the other varietals). The Riesling is better, it seems everyone who drinks it is pleased. It is not a great wine but a good solid everyday wine that doesnt polarize, plus it is very affordable…

  • Great, great show Gary!
I had a 2001 Heymann-Löwenstein Riesling Uhlen Trockenbeerenauslese (TBA) directly at the winery last weekend. The first wine in my life I scored 100 points! Unreal stuff!

So my question to you: Why wasn't there any Riesling TBA (or BA) on the show, but alot of Tokajs / Sauternes …. ??? Spreading some knowledge Gary!!!

  • The Pichlers are producing great wines! Go out and try some Riesling “Großes Gewächs” out of Germany from producers like Keller, Wittmann, Diehl, Emrich-Schönleber or Fürst. Great dry wines as its best!

  • Anonymous

Damn dude, thats late night cable wine. ; )

  • @ Jared The way you described it, Do I drink it? or Sleep with it? or get in the ring with it?

  • Anonymous

2005 Lucien Crochet Le Chene Sancerre is awsome!!

  • ilbee

Great show, this format is by far the one I like the most.

QOTD: This one is easy. A couple of months back when I had sprained my ankle in a pretty nasty way and was just staying at home waiting to be able to use the damn thing again my dear sister stopped by with some great prawn-zucchini pasta in some buttery lemon sauce. We uncorked a bottle of Domäne Wachau Riesling Smaragd 1000-Eimer-Berg 2007 which was just exceptional and an amazing match with the pasta. Next week I went to buy more and of course it was sold out and there wasn't any more to come. What a great value that riesling was even at our monopoly's high prices (16?) and I'll be sure to buy a couple of bottles I'll ever come across. Also in case this wine is available in the US it would be great if u had it in the show, Gary.

  • lau1

QOTD: My first Meursault! A 2001 Vincent Girardin Meursault 1er Cru Charmes which I had together with my wine friend and a friend from america who was over for a week (I'm here in Denmark). Wauw it was good, really nice integration of oak (normally I'm drinking steely wines like Chablis) and lots of subtle details. My friend commented with “This really tastes like expensive french white wine” and it did in a great way.

Funny thing was that i had another Meursault by chance (a wine menu at a nice restaurant in Copenhagen) just a few days after and the experience was along the same lines, yum!

  • Jim S.

QOTD: After watching the episode where you reviewed the 2008 Tramin Pinot Bianco, I went to my local wine merchant and he was nice enough to order a couple of cases so I could try it. When they arrived, I picked up a couple of bottles and took them home and popped one open. WOW! We were totally blown away. The wine has absolutely everything I like in perfect balance. Since then I have found out that the owner of the shop tried a bottle and LOVED it. He recommended it to others and they tried some and they love it! He completely sold out every bottle he had and has ordered more. We're in for a case when it arrives! Outstanding recommendation for an outstanding wine!

  • YoungDave

QOTD: 2005 Quinto Dos Roques Encruzado, Dao, Portugal. I carried this wine on my list and paired it with seared scallops with quince chutney on a tasting menu recently. The quince fruit, yeastiness, and slight toast on the finish paired beautifully. DAMN, Portugal- you did the value thang AGAIN!!

P.S. Thanks for the shout-out, Sir!! (speaking of which, when will we see Sir Gary V. again?!!)

  • gottfr

    great episode

  • lau1

Where did you get it? I might want to find it myself.

  • gubbiotti

good times today. i love the condrieu! i had some andre perret last year on NYE…. so friggin good.
QOTD – over xmas, i opened a bottle of huet, haut – lieu, sec, 2007. it was the most austere white i have had. it was the most compelling for sure.
i am glad i have some clo du bourg o7 sec for down the road.

BTW – i like the new comment setup gary. i am glad too that corq'd is back in action. i might have to start posting things again.

  • Greetings from Czech Republic! Smack in the heart of beer country. Are there any eastern european wines worth drinking? Or are they all just crap?

  • I answered this yesturday. I won't copy the post but offer a quick paraphrase. In 1993 I worked with a guy who was a dual citizen (US and Croatia) His father sent him some wines right before Christmas and he asked me to share them because I was the only friend he had who appreciated wine. The white he had (I don't remember the year or vineyard because they were not available in the US at that time) was amazing. It was the first time that I loved a white. I had liked some whites here and there but this wine was one that I would have stockpiled had it been an option which sadly it was not……

Great show. Good thing you didn’t air this right before you offered the Francois Villard on Cinderalla.com for half price! 😉
My wife and I went on a wine tour of the Northern Rhone Valley in June of 2008 with Mat Garretson, formerly of Garretson Wines, and it was a tremendous experience. We visited Villard amongst others in Condrieu and I really liked all of Condrieu that we tasted that day. Upon our return, I was quite happy to discover that Wine Library carried Villard’s wines.

QOTD: Best white I had recently was the 2006 Francois Villard Condrieu Deponcins which was awesome! Vibrant, fruity, viscous, nutty, just a really complex white wine. We had a bottle of that from my cellar a few weeks ago with grilled grouper and it was superb.

  • drt999

Maybe a white with almond overtones and good acidity would work (like a Vermentino or a few other Italian whites) instead of the fruit-driven or herbacious ones.

  • I aslon love them Henzall Chards…Like GV has been saying, I'm getting in rut on the REDs, they just aren't doing it for me. And the whites & bubbles are so fresh and so great with so many foods
