90/100

line of the day – ‘not the Oak Monster but maybe the Butter Bandit was going to come out’

Hilarious when GV picks up a ‘Really Exotic Nose’ on the last wine and asks Mott what he gets (without any hints). Nothing replies the Mottster!

In the zone with this episode Uncle GV. Great wine info. QOTD: 2006 Ch. Philippe-le-Hardi, C d Beaune. Wonderful inexpensive typical White Burgundy. Just right on the butter.

  • bobbytiger

While I am still looking for that “killer” white, my go-to wine use to be a Farallon CA Chard, from the Central Coast area. Retailed for about $10.00, and had, for me, the right blend of butter and oak, as I prefer a heavier oak. Last year, they stopped producing, and everyone has sold out. My loss. Still looking for another go-to Chard. with a heavier oak taste.

QOTD: That would be the 2007 Kloster Eberbach dry Riesling from the Rheingau. Very good wine the the price point. I had it a few days ago with my parents wenn I came back from Vancouver. I had two great wines from Okanagan Valley there too. Quails Gate dry Riesling and Gray Monk unwooded chardonnay. Both 2008 if I remeber right.

I've been dying to try Condrieu for some time now. Unfortunately, as a CKC I can't always toss around that kind of cash. One of these days…

But, the best 2 whites I've had recently were both viogniers. 2007 Guigal Cotes du Rhone blanc, and 2007 “The Innocent” Shinas Estate Viognier from Victoria, Australia. The Guigal was strikingly complex for a $17 bottle and had incredible mouthfeel. The Innocent was louder and had a nice subtle butter play, but not quite as complex. Both were amazing though.

I'm lovin' the butter bandit. Unlike some, I never complain when he shows up in my chard.

  • Cyndane

Virgin viewer (meaning first timer). Enjoyed your opinions about the three on #799. Had the best $13 bottle of wine yesterday…Cupcake Chardonnay.

  • MSMOR

Had a couple bottles of Tormaresca Chardonnay from Puglia. At 9 bones this was such a surprise. Balanced and delicious. Can't wait to try other wines from Puglia. We live in Providence, RI so we can find some interesting Italian and Poyugese wines.

  • Best white I've had is the Brooks Winery Ara Riesling. Luckily I bought it before it got served at the White House and the price went through the roof. Still have one bottle to enjoy.

  • Fav white I've had recently was Washington Hills Late Harvest Riesling… vitage… i think was 2006? but I don't see that on their website, so maybe not? It was during a small new years eve party with some old friends, sharing different bottles of wine.

But wow, first Riesling I've ever had, and I was in love at first taste. I don't know exactly what flavors I tasted, but it was definitely a sweet white, very easy drinking, and went well with the cheese and pretzels i was snacking on.

  • beeperr

Great show, I'll have to wait until I'm rolling a little higher though…

QOTD: Got to try a '98 Dom Perignon on the last day of the double aughts – I finished your “101 Wines…” book the next day, only to find '99 DP at the top of the list with a lot of similar qualities.

  • Xavier

close 2nd: Clos Mogador Priorat Nelin 2006.. opened this in memory of Max.. my little brother, best friend.. and favourite dog in the world..who passed away last year ..just one day before christmas eve. day 1.. very fresh and very yummy.. day 2.. completely different wine.. could hardly believe it was the same wine.. very good though.. and gained much more complexities.. a little less fresh though. 92
1st: Weingut Stefan Winter, Leckerberg Riesling trocken 2007. Oh my, best white wine I ever had so far.. doesnt say much.. but still ;).. a nice sweetness in the middle.. but a long dry ending. Will try trace more of this as I would like to know how this will progress over time. For now a very solid 92+(+). Opened this for a friend his birthday.

This week I tasted the 1999 Bollinger R.D. Champagne (disgorged April 08). Amazing! On a more affordable note, the 2008 Cameron Willamette Valley Chardonnay is my new favorite white for spring.

Grillo Viognier is one of my favorites, it’s just so distinctive. Got to get more people onto that one. For me it smells like fennel and minerals. Very vegetal so i see where you get the asparagus pee from…

    Krunch,
Good question. I’d prefer do do #1 first, then #2, and maybe skip #3!

2007 Arrowood Gewurztraminer Saralee?s vineyard. Shaved ginger delight. Nice and clean. 2006? Tri Vigne California percentages of Viognier, Marsanne, Roussane. I believe this was a small garage wine. Realized I should have remembered the winemaker?s name when I tasted this wine at home. Really great stuff.

  • TimCtheFilmGuy

Best white recently was 2007 Lucien Albrecht Gewürztraminer Reserve. Here is my Cork'd review:

Amazing amount of Rose petal. It smelled like Turkish delight from Jordan with the rose petals on it, or for people of a certain age maybe your grandmother's dresser drawers with a rose potpourri ball in it. A very interesting aroma and the taste, while lacking a bit for length, backs up the smell with rose and rock candy

Gary V Is Rockin'! This Was A Cool Episode Man. I've Had The Leeuwin Estate One Time In The Past And It Was Extremely Good. I Think It Was The 2002. A Veeeeeery Rich White Wine, And As You Said Oaky. But Not Over The Top Oaky-ness-Monster-Factor!?!? What The Hell…?
Qotd: I Had A Great Bottle Of White On New Years Eve With The Rest Of The Family. It Was A Schloss Vollrads Erstes Gewächs 2007 Riesling From The Rheingau, Which I Think Is The Greatest Region In Germany For White Wine… A Very Crisp White, Lazer-Beam Like In The Mouth, Very Complex, Lots Of Potential, For At Least 20 Years Of Ageing. And Really Just A Baby. And For Those Of You Who Don't Know It, Erstes Gewächs Stands For The Top Range Wine, From The Winery. Hey Gary, Do A Show On Rheingau Riesling, That Would Be The Top ; )
I Have Three Wines I Could Recommend: Anything From Georg Breuer (He's The Best), And Really Anything From Robert Weil (Another Top Player From The Region) And Perhaps Schloss Vollrads… That Would Be Awesome, And I Think You Would Be Blow Away…
    !!!

  • Good show old man! I am beginning to try all whites I can get my hands on. I have changed my tune recently; one of my New Years resolutions was to try a new bottle every week. You would be proud of me Gary! Did not receive an e-mail about this one though. Anyone else have this problem?

QOTD: 2007 Franciscan Fountain Court. It is a Sauvignon Blanc, Muscat, Viognier, Chardonnay blend. I tried it at the winery a few weeks ago and was very impressed. A little RS, which I usually shy away from. But the sugar was balanced by a tartness and acidity that I really enjoyed. Beautiful bright tropical fruit: Mango Pineapple star fruit, seemingly very complex with just a hint of the minerality that we love so much. I would probably give it a 90, The finish could have used a touch more acidity but I was still leaving with at least two of them.

  • Glenn Porter

QOTD: The 1990 Lopez de Heredia white rioja was pretty awesome. Big and viscous with lots of almond and cherry flavors on the nose and a definite taste of rose and jasmine- lots of quince and like a really weird flavor of the guts of a lobster- whats that stuff called? Tomale?

  • Rob the Swede

Its so funny Gary, that every time you drink the wine you taste on the show you say that you never do. I think ypu drink the wine at least once in every five shows. 🙂

  • Greentank Welcome!

  • LOL! good point

  • Rob the Swede

I enjoy the show a lot, keep up the good work!

Would be nice if you tested Bordeaux Cru Bourgois and Langhe Nebbiolo on the show, great wines at a price I can handle.

  • CharlieTN

    And we love it.

Also, most of the guests drink the wine and you always say all the commenters will love them…

  • jamesculp

QOTD: I may be terribly uncool for taking this position, but my favorite white wine is a Virginia wine.

    Yup.

Made by Cardinal Point, it is called Quattro. It's a four grape blend (Riesling, Gewurtz Viognier, and Traminette), and it strikes the best balance between acid, oak, and butter I've ever had. I first tried it about three years ago, and each new release has a slightly different character, but they are all delicious. And under $20 per.

Check it out if you get a chance.

  • anthonytort

Luv the show. I grabbed some cheese, a glass of white, laughed, and enjoyed. It's a great finish for the day. Go Jets!

  • CabZinPin

Loved the show Gary, nice and tight. QOTD: I have had some really good white burgundies but I still prefer the chards from Darioush. By the way, I will debut my cool new avatar soon. I promise it will be different from anyone else.

  • Another nice ep.

I had a 05 Meursault 1er cru “Les Genevrieres” by Genot-Boulanger and it was NICE. I am not too much of a BIG-OAK chard fan, but in this wine it was perfectly balanced, just how I'd like to see Chard being made.

Combined it with toast with Shrimp-Dill mayonaise.

    55dollars.

  • flavasauce

Gary, you forgot to rinse with the Condrieu 😉

QOTD: Went to awesome restaurant in Beacon NY last week with my partner and parents called Cafe Amarcord (highly recommend!) and had a 2008 Viniosa Falanghina that rocked the house! It was really creamy and rich without any oak. Best Falanghina I've tried though admittedly haven't had a whole lot.

  • flavasause

    Make that “VINOSIA”

  • Great old-time feel with this show, loved it!

QOTD: My last recent 'holy-crap' white wine moment was 2007 Thierry Weber Weingut Sauvignon Blanc from Austria.

It was more Austria than Sauvignon Blanc, if that makes sense for all you Terroirists out there. Forget the grape, screw the winery, HOUSTON, this is EARTH speaking right here!!!

This wine spoke the language of the soil, (and maybe a little bit of that awkward Austrian German) with the nose of lemon curd, bubble gum and grass. The palate transitioned to gun powder sprinkled apples.

It was NOT for the faint of heart, palate or terroir.

  • jenna35

congrats on episode 799! I'm excited for 800! Any value wine episode coming up?

  • I like the new comment area. Easy-peasy!

  • Loving the new comment system, no problems so far. Another great show Mr. G.

  • Looks Like there might still be a few bugs to tweek out 🙁

  • I am soooo excited for episode 800, I might just lose sleep tonight.

  • Nope he rinsed, check out 10:19

  • neilmc

Hey! I didn't get the “Warning….” today but am still commenting as a guest. It says Optional: Login below” Question: where is the login? I don't see it when I scroll down the page.

QOTD: MULLER THURGAU '06 Graziano Fontana, Trentino. We had this at one of our favorite neighborhood restaurants in SF, Pesce. It paired really well with our meal. No oak, dry, nice fruit, refreshing with good acidity. Plus it didn't break the bank. Good juice at an honest price.

  • NY Pete

    so where's #800?

  • mrzitro

QOTD: last best white wine: Feudi di San Gregorio Greco di Tufo.
Hint of burnt rubber & lemon peel on the nose. Great acidity. Great mouth feel…like it was oily from the burnt rubber. In fact, I haven't found a disappointing Greco yet. Thanks for introducing the varietal to me.

  • tommyb2

    Episode 800!!!!!

  • flavasauce

    Doh! I stand corrected.

  • CellarRat5

love that: “gunpowder sprinkled apples”, made my mouth water.

  • jayhitek

No real problem with the new comments system. Blows that I had to start from Zero.. I have already left over 500 comments! I want my props!
QOTD: Last bottle of white I had was some shwag Mommy's Time Out $8 bottle of Pinot Grigio she loves to drink. It's ok. She loves it. She's also a peasant.

  • AaronO

Lake Breeze Vineyards Pinot Blanc '08. Naramata Bench, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia. You'd love this wine, Gary. Ultra ripe with great tropical notes and some serious acid! Most aromatic Pinot Blanc I've ever had.

  • Don Simpson

Shave it! After the Jets win the Super Bowl of course. Think of it as a celebratory shave.
