line of the day – ‘not the Oak Monster but maybe the Butter Bandit was going to come out’

Hilarious when GV picks up a ‘Really Exotic Nose’ on the last wine and asks Mott what he gets (without any hints). Nothing replies the Mottster!

  • Only been watchin' the show a few months but decided it was time to quit being a lurker.

Love that the comments are on Disqus though – it's a great system. Thanks GaryV + team!

  • leif

Best white wine Lopez d heredia tondonia vina blanco 85 and a riesling auslese graans fassian 97 ( creme de cassis on the nose !?) ultra exotic. greets leif from germany

  • Don Simpson

HA! I’m reading through the comments right now and seeing how many people are calling you out on the Francois pronunciation. Hey, it keeps the Vayniacs on their toes.

  • Don Simpson

MOTT!!! I didn’t realize you post on WLTV, I thought you just focused on “LINK IT UP!” This is awesome, we need more of the Mottster…

  • Don Simpson

HAHAH! This is a hilarious screen name. I just noticed the “patheticwinegroupie” play on the Buehler episode. Great stuff!

  • Don Simpson

@ GenericEric – my girlfriend LOVES Vinho Verde since its lower in alcohol and she’s a lightweight 🙂 I agree with you on the Broadbent. Have you had Twin Vines? Also a good value play and very easy to find.

  • Andrew D

    Hey Gary

Good show – you're on a bit of a roll at the moment. Shame about the Leewin Estate, it often gets tauted as Australia's best white wine.

QOTD: Best white I've had recently? Well that would probably be the 'Andre Perret Condrieu 2006'. I've never been a fan of Viognier but this bad boy one me over. An amazing complex nose and depth of palate that had me really excited. One of the best white wines I've ever drunk.

    Cheers
    Andrew

    Royce,

Fantastic recommendation. I can find this just about anywhere, and it’s only about $10.00! If this goes over well with the little lady, maybe I’ll start keeping three bottles in MY apartment!

Seriously, thanks again… I’m excited, and glad that I have a few options choose from!

  • BrooklynPaul

is there any buzz? at all? anywhere?

  • Best white ive had in the last year was a Movia Lunar 07. It had complexity like I have never seen before. And, it was ORANGE in color. How ofter do you see that?! Highly recommended! By the way, Did Gary every address the debacle with the pizza guy? That episode was offensively bad… Love the show!

  • Pouilly Fumé, absolutely.
QOTD: I've had an Albariño which I ate with some tequila/curcumin sausages and was grand standing to be honest, specially since I prepared them myself. the other white I've had recently is a blended Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc wine and to tell you the truth, I was surprised at how nice it was, it's a little XADomecq Mexican wine but it didn't disappoint, ate that one with quesadillas and I loved how my dinner went.

  • Thnx Joey B!

  • OFL u rock!

  • Corkshack

    Hey Gary,

I'm not a lurker on Cindy Wine…but this will officially be my first comment on WLTV. 🙂

The best white I've ever had was a Mt. Vernon Chardonnay from the Sierra Foothills in California several years ago ('03 maybe). This area of California is easily overlooked and has some of the BEST wines in the world. I've never seen and Amador county wine on your show…this area is the Pic St Loup (cult following) of California. You would keel over if you tried one of the best Mt Vernon or Jeff Runquist wines. The price point is usually 17-30 bones….the QPR is on point!

You HAVE to seek out the newly released Runquist 2008 Barbara (from Dick Cooper vinyards). WOW!

Thanks for doing what you do.

  • NYCJG

HI GARY! I've been lurking for years! I think you recently said you were getting bored with reds…I've been feeling the same way. Over the past few years I've been drinking so much fascinating white wine that I am not easily wowed by the reds…I'm in a rut. I think the wine that single handedly changed my mind about white wine was a Nicolas Joly Clos de la Coulee de Serrant. It's still one of my favorites, I recently found a wine bar in Houston that had the 2004 for something ridiculous like $64 a bottle…doesn't even make sense but I wasn't asking any questions. Over Christmas I had a 2006 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clavoillon that was stunning. Went perfectly with our Christmas wild boar ham mmmmmm.

  • smiledoc

Love whites, primarily in warmer weather since i drink them chilled, not a good student there Professor V, lol

Best white of all time was 1997 Carmel Road Chardonnay succulent on the nose with fats and buttery syrup on the palate, kind of stalked this wine as it was hard to find… also love Sylvan Ridge Viognier, very tropical nose and palate…2003 Newton unfiltered Chardonnay citrus fruit on the nose with melon, glycerin and butter on the palate

  • frank vx

    Egon Müller, Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett
astounding complexity and 9 % alcohol, amazing
and… laurel vinyard by casa marin in chile, discovered thanks to you
one of the best sauvignon blancs ever…
cheers and congrats for 800 episodes !

  • ruyguy

Gary, I love the new comment system but I'm surprized you didn't have a custom app made for it. Either way, CHEERS and can't wait for ep 800!

  • mikebest

my favorite white wine is dalwhinnie chardonnay. It's from a 45 acre site in a little corner of Victoria. Costs about £15 and is worth every penny, definitely beats the premier cru burgundy for the same price. The best thing about their wines and the chardonnay in particular is that they're interesting, lots of expensive wine tastes good but not all of it tastes interesting.

    Mike

  • Ruyguy like the disqus peeps

  • Chris thnx so much- love the corkshack name

  • ruyguy

I'll check them out, I'm sure I'll use them for future projects, works great!

  • NY Pete

maybe KAHUNA knows, he's in GV's inner circle … I always knew Pat was a closet white wine drinker … 🙂

  • DKBTex

Come on GV!!!!!!!! Bring the THUNDER… Where is 800!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

QOTD: I'm all about value these days. Recently I enjoyed drinking Trivento Torrontes, Casa de Vila Verde Vinho Verde and other crisp whites. My neighbors/friends were asking for pinot grigio and chardonnay and I introduced them to these wines. They love them and are almost ready to take a break from pinot grigio. There are many Torrontes to choose from and the Trivento is a nice example. The nose is lively and it tastes delicious. I also like values from muscadet de sevre et main for crisp simple whites. When stepping it up, my husband prefers chardonnay and we'll enjoy our french burgundies. He enjoys buttery oaky Napa chardonnay not me.

  • canadapete

qotd. Thornhaven Gewurtzraminer from the Okanagan Valley (Canada) is so good, it's like a spiritual experience drinking this wine. The depth and complexity, as well as the delicious, food friendly nature of it was terrific.

  • Anton

I had a gewurztraminer the other day. I liked it but still my favorite is the Pinot Grigio.

  • EmZeeGee

QOTD: We enjoyed 2007 Kerpen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese not too long ago, and it was lovely. Sweet with a little citrus; not too cloying, not too harsh. Lovely alone and with food. We immediately bought another bottle. The pretty artist label doesn't hurt, either.

I love Viognier; we might have to splurge for the Francois Villiard Condrieu Grand Vallon! I prefer fish and veg dishes, so I take whites seriously. 🙂

  • Canada Pete I loved that wine in the 06 vintage

  • Ivanator

2007 Valkenberg gewurztraminer.Rubber tire meets grapefruit, loved it.Love the show also.

Fresh, rich and just a hint of residual sugar. Here are their 2 products they are currently selling:

    http://www.cavespringcellars.com/wines/wine-details?wine=Riesling+Estate&vintage=2007&type=Estate+Bottled

    http://www.cavespringcellars.com/wines/wine-details?wine=Riesling+CSV&vintage=2007&type=CSV

I had the CSV last summer, and for $30, I feel it is well worth it.

  • Big episode # 800 coming. Can't wait… Will there be a special guest. A little sasha action perhaps… or buehler part duex.

  • pmase

Would love to see Sasha on episode #800, he is my favorite guest in the history of wine library TV and needs to be on more often!

  • MooseSox

@haiti – Keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers. We just found that our co-worker is alive and well in the country, to the great relief to all of us. I hope they are able to rescue as many people as possible.

QOTD – I want to give some love to Virginia viogners, which I think is a grape that this region does pretty well. Try to get one if you get a chance.

  • Altboy97

I'm all about relating the place to the wine. As surprising as it may be, there are some noteable whites here in the NJ (and wineries I get to go visit), and grapes not even heard of on the T-show. How about the Ventimiglia Vidal Blanc (dry) and the Silver Decoy Traminette.

  • Hey Gary,

Fabulous show -I’d really love to have a crack at the Condrieu – It really looked like something delish. I’d prolly agree with you on the Leeuwin Estate Art Series Chardy – ICONIC Wine here in AUS, but you can get just as good quality for more then half the price. Keep’em going bro

QOTD….Check out my video review on an Pinot Blanc for Alsace http://blip.tv/file/2967508

  • QOTD: 2008 Elio Perrone “Sourgal” Moscato d'Asti. Melons, frizzante, nice nose. I did not expect that much. Purchased and poured to satisfy friends, females in particular, as part of a meal with other, more serious wines. The bottles were a huge, evening-enhancing, set-the-mood hit. By no means best wine I've drunk or poured, but among the best wine times. Wine is more than see, sniff, swirl, swallow. It is who you are with, the moment, the magical confluence of things you cannot buy or predict. That's the magic, the glory of the fruit of the vine and the work of human hands.

  • Nick_L

Flying in this weekend to film the THUNDER SHOW with you on Monday. Hope the Jets win so you're not depressed when we're there.

  • debyi

Not the best, but totally different from what I normally drink, 2005 Serenity – Unoaked Chardonnay Santa Barbara County. Way cheap, under $7 a bottle, but affordable for us just above min wage retail workers.

  • heavyblanket

The best white I have ever tried also happens to be the best wine period I have had. It also has a ridiculously long name. So long I have to copy and paste from the Palm Bay website.
    SCHLOSS REINHARTSHAUSEN ERBACHER MARCOBRUNN
    TROCKENBEERENAUSLESE RIESLING.
I love TBA wines to begin with, but this one is majestic and it's not even ready to drink and it may not be for 50 years but I can't wait that long. I got to try this with a wine rep and I bought 3 bottles for my shop. Super limited production. 120 bottles total and only 70 were sent to the US. Super delicious, like apricots in honey. Great acid balancing the teeth shattering sweetness. Incredible, absolutely. Best wine ever and I am super lucky, because I got to taste it for free..

  • KOdyssey

Gary the comments system is great! Only one feature that was in the old one that would complete the experience was the “show all comments” button – I miss it a lot!!

QOTD: Taking your advice and expanding my palate into aged rieslings lately. Leo Buring 1999 Clare Valley Riesling (Museum Release) A$25-30 – Beautiful brassy colour, velvet texture, very light toast but still holding on to the last few branches of the citris tree. Available now as a museum release, and has still got some years in it.

  • beeperr

    Ditto

  • japhoboy

QOTD – 2007 Morlet Family Vineyards La Proportion Doree at Thankgiving – interesting floral nose, stone fruit on the palate with a hidden core of beeswax and honey – very young but it stood up to everything on the table, including mincemeat pie.

  • manonthemoon

Good show, love the exciting whites, more episodes like this.

QOTD: 2007 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese
Notes from day 2. Pale gold in color. Nose of petrol, funky zest, white flowers, a little bubble gum, On the palate there was lemon, honey, funky zest, and a little more of the bubble gum note in there as well. The finish was long, and nice mouthwatering acidity still noted that balances the weight. Really loved the funky petrol attack on the nose and to a lesser extent palate that day 1 showed. Looks like this will be a good long term investment. Let them sleep. Hold.

  • Thanks GaryVee, you rock.

  • ONUMello

    I'm enjoying the new comments!
QOTD: Not necessarily the BEST white I've had recently, but I was quite impressed by the 2007 Messina Hof Gewürztraminer Merrill's Vineyard. It's from Texas and I got it on a recent visit there, and for the $8 price tag, it EASILY stood its own against wines in a similar price point from California/Washington. I never would have thought that to be the case given how far south Texas is compared to those other regions or Germany, but it definitely brought the Thunder especially for the price.

  • Don Simpson

Gary – great stuff, I appreciate you mixing it up with the killer whites and giving the Thunder show a little flava flave today. I'm also enjoying the new comment format quite a bit!

QOTD: I had a really interesting wine over Christmas that had a a lighter attack, but a tremendous mid-palate and it was a fun experience because I was able to explain the concept of mid-palate to my sister and she totally got it! Here's my tasting note:

2008 Jean-Claude Bougrier Vouvray 11.5% alc: lighter color, fresh nose like throwing clean linens and chopped up green apples in a river and sniffing it, a brief soft attack that EXPLODES on the mid-palate with gorgeous granny smith apple, nice minerality in transition to a long long long finish. I was shocked at how long the finish was considering the acidity and clean nose. Rating = 93 Points

  • Biznass

    QOTD: Havens Albarino 2008

I have heard that Havens has closed and I am very sad about that. I enjoyed there wines like '05 Black and Blue and Bourriquot both bought at the Library. I found the Albarino just because it was from Havens and ended up really loving it and wishing I would have bought more since I don't think i'll get it again.

I am a lurker and I am sorry for that. I need to figure this out and sign in and comment more. Thank you very much Gary love the show

  • cmaloy

First of all … I love the Jets, but not more than the CHARGERS. CHARGERS CHARGERS CHARGERS!!!!

QOTD: Best white wine I have had I bought from Cinderella. It was the 2006 Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Heimbourg. Here was my review on Cork'd

This wine has a rich gold color. It was darker than I expected.

The smell had an apple peach, oil, and cotton flowers smell. I think the other reviewer here said it had a petrol smell and I agree. Peach is the most dominant smell on the nose.

My first taste had a citrus flavor to it along with some minerality, cream and honey.

The mid palate transitioned from this citrus to a candied apple flavor. The wine made my mouth water from the acid. The transition from flavor to flavor was very nice, smooth and well bodied.

The finish was very long and had an almond eucalyptus mediciney flavor.

This wine was a rocking wine!!! It was very complex and I enjoyed picking up all the flavors. I would definitely buy it again. I highly enjoyed this wine and if anyone wants a good Riesling this is my top pick so far.

  • Michael D

    Gary,

I watched the Jets win this past weekend, but I am pulling for the Cards. Warner is getting close to retirement, and this state needs a winner!
