lines of the day – ‘Mott:’I root for the Jets the same way you root for the Giants’..GV – ‘so you hate them’ and one of the best lines of all time, ‘this show all week is going to be almost unwatchable to anyone who can’t deal with Jets talk’

Phenomenal show – I always love the ones where GV is pumped by recent Jets victories and his mood is through the roof for this one

QOTD1: Yes, good music is being made. Fav’s from 2009 included releases from Springsteen, U2, Green Day, Neko Case, Rodrigo y Gabriella, Pearl Jam, Swell Season, Passion Pit, the XX. Man, I could go on and on. If you aren’t finding good, new music it’s because you aren’t looking. Start with the World Cafe podcast: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=39

QOTD2: Won an Apple PowerBook in a drawing once. Best computer I’ve ever used.

Gary, you’ve got to spend more mornings in bars. Red beer is big for the early risers w/or without hangovers.
QOTD I like alot of variety in music. I like old rock but you can hear it in anytown usa. I lean towards Truck Driving Music. Check out KPIG.com for the best variety with blues, rock, and a little bluegrass.
next QOTD I won a fancy rabbit corkscrew thing at a high school reunion I wasn’t invited to.

Great show Gary, I actually really loved the fact that your two guests weren’t wine experts. I’m often interested when you have really knowledgeable guests on like wine makers or distributors. but this show was great cause I really enjoyed seeing people who liked wine but weren’t experts in the learning processes. The fact that you were activly teaching them things about wine, that was especially valuable to me.

GV: yes please do a sparkling wine show, I love it but never want to spend the money on a good one, and getting a cheap botle usually leads to really bad juice. also i’d be interested to see you try some sparkling reds.

QOTD1: I think there is plenty of good music being made today but this is my generation so perhaps I’m biased, white stripes, decemberists, phoenix, and this one that I don’t think anyone will like but that I have taken to playing over and over in the last week.

QOTD2: I was playing H.O.R.S.E. with some friends (after having had a bit of wine) and to win the game decided to just do so insane shot. I swung the ball in a big arc, around my back and over my shoulder from 20 feet back and hit nothing but net on the first try, it’s the best game of horse I’ve ever played.

I don’t drink the stuff, but it has worked it’s way down to Minnesota and the Dakotas from Canada. Check out the history of the Caesar cocktail on Wikipedia to find out why the Canadians put clam juice in everything.

  • luvgrapesqueezings

Congrats to the Jets!!! I’d like to see them represent the AFC East well by beating the Colts and going to the next level.

BTW Budweiser “Chelada”, a beer with tomato and clam juice, is widely distributed in MA……..

I’m completely the obverse of anyone here most likely, about 20 sparkling per 2 reds and 1 white. Probably 15 champagne 4 prosecco 1 cava/south africa/india etc.

A month of sparking is all I could ask for GV!!! except for getting on one of those shows haha.

BTW gamay actually used to be a legal champagne varietal

QOTD – don’t get too much music listening done
QOTD – maybe 10 bucks on a scratch off

qotd 1: Brian you like Zeppelin? You need to check out the brand new band “Them Crooked Vultures” Its John Paul Jones, Dave Grohl & Josh Homme. The new self titled record is killer
qotd 2: I won an 8 pound chocolate bar in 4th grade. no idea I was even in that contest.

Gary, I was wondering if you've ever had a vin jaune?

  • gubbiotti

While I've never heard it called red beer, tomato juice and beer (green olives optional) is also very popular throughout North Dakota and northwest Minnesota. The Canadian version (popular in Manitoba and Saskatchewan) adds clamato juice (tomato juice and clam broth).

Anheiser Busch has actually been selling both these premixed in a can with Bud Light for the past couple years.
Also, the Happy Harry's in Fargo, ND is the best liquor store in the country and the best wine shop in the ND/SD/MN (including Twin Cities) tri state area. I'll stand by that.

  • Congrats on the Jets! Looking forward to checking out this ep later tonight.

  • wayno daaaaaaaaaaaaa wino

    YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • ChicagoMatt

Drove down to Indy for the Colts victory on Saturday. Amazing stuff. Have fun in Indy, but I am praying you go back to NJ instead of heading down to Miami.

  • ChicagoMatt

Great episode, btw. The red beer exchange was top 10 favorite moments from WLTV. Just brought the show to a grinding halt. Awesome!

  • NY Pete

    quote of the day … “we're doing a show here” … LOL … J – E – T – S – Jets Jets Jets!!!

  • waynoooo da wino

Yo NY Pete, YOU DAAA MAAAAAN!!!!!! GOOOOOO DEVILS, WAAAAAAHOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!
    :o)

  • Great show. The guests were pretty good. I really hope the Jets vs. Vikings in the Super Bowl happens.

Here is the wiki on “redbeer”: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cerveza_preparada . The crap big breweries all have their own versions they sell and it is supposedly awful, just like the other beers they make.

BTW the new comment setup is pretty nice.

QOTD 1: Here is a random selection of some of my favorites and some that are new and pretty damn good – Flogging Molly, La Roux, Lisa Hannigan, & The Sword.

QOTD 2: Used to play poker and bet on sports pretty frequently, but I never won anything substantial. My luck is usually terrible. That’s probably why I am still unemployed.

    Go JETS!

  • NY Pete

Dude, you have to work on your Dad for this weekend … he's worried about the colts … I told him we're Super Bowl bound … 🙂

  • The 'red beer' is as you said, Gary, “brilliant.” I have never in my life heard of such a thing, but I'm trying it out here in Cali tonight! Bud Light and V8!

  • Lb_in_KS

Whole month of sparkling…how 'bout a week. If you don't know Red Beer, G, you clearly don't get to the Mid West nearly enough. (consider that an invite) 🙂 What wine goes with summer sausage? Lotta good music being made….radio as we know it isn't bringing it to the masses….which is why I'm gravitating to even older music..like 1870's. I never when anything.

  • XpensiveWino

2010…the year of the guest! 😉

  • mikebest

    Motttttttttttttttttt!

You missed the 85! I know it was an 85/86 but Mott!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Gary – I’m stunned you haven’t heard of a red beer! I’m in Seattle, but I was introduced by a friend who was from Boston — they actually sell it in cans! Check out this one: Budweiser Chelada is tomato juice, beer AND CLAM JUICE! http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/29/37389 I tried one once while I was on tour and saw it in a little liquor store in Cupertino — it tasted JUST like you’d think…

  • nice to see some ordinary vanyniacs . Good on you mates.
Don't promise thingsyou can't live up to. A whole months of sparkling? Dude, you lost the friday tasting pack after 2 weeks, the blind tastings, where are they, 😀

Gary's qotd:1sparkling in 50 others, I know lousy…I'll promise to increase that number with more Cava, Cremant etc.
QOTD1: Actually some do but they tend to be from the 60 th and 70 ths 🙂
QOTD: Best thing in a game of chance? My girlfriend, it was a chance to ask her there in the bar and it payed off 🙂

  • GV even said 85 a bit later inte show for the Cremant.

  • Lyman

I'm from Western Washington and went to college in Moorhead, Minn. in 1972 and found out about “red beer” when I got there. If you were low on money you bought Grain Belt to mix with tomato juice and if you had some extra “bones” you bought Old Milwaukee. I tried it, it wasn't bad but I enjoyed straight beer to much to dilute it, and the same with tomato juice. But it was huge, HUGE I tell you!!
I have drank a lot of sparklers in the last year or so in tasting groups and it is not one of my favorite ways to enjoy wine. I enjoy spumantes and Moscato d'Asti and Cavas more than Champagne and the othe northern France sparklers. I've tried, I just haven't got there, YET!

  • jasonmalumed

QOTD1: Lady GaGa? Let's be real here… Miley Cyrus is obviously superior.
QOTD2: It's a tie… I won an inflatable “Free Willy” orca whale from a video store when I was 6 by guessing which number key unlocked a lock (lucky number 19, baby!). OR, in 3rd grade, a won a raffle and got a gigantic “Troll” doll. You know, the ones with the big hair? Yep, that's about it…

  • cdncartman

Beer and clamato juice is the way to go…and get the extra spicy…some places will call it a red eye and it's great for a change or for a hangover.

As per the sparkling…we love to mix in some sparkling every 5-10 bottles…loving the rolet crement de jura…great sparkling rose. I wish you could get a nice champagne for less than$40/bottle but no usually the case in Canada.

  • guymandude

Kinda surprised you were doing the show today after last night, that's awesome.

Congrts. guys on winning, no really I mean it.

qotd; All music is good, if it's good.
qotd; I guess one time I won a dishwasher that I later sold.

  • castello

Did you get your tickets for Indy yet? Red beer on Tuesday!?

  • Sorry Gary but This is the week for the C-O-L-T-S COLTS COLTS COLTS to show your team why they, with a little bit of ME AND Colt Nation, will be Super Bowl Champs again.. If not for the the poor choice of not going for 16-0 the Jets wouldn't be in the playoffs.

I hope you enjoy your stay in Indy for the weekend. I'd love to get to meet you and talk a little smack over a glass of wine. Let me know if you're game. BTW, I LOVED YOUR BOOK..

    GO HORSE !!

  • Green Pea

That was a fantastic episode. I'm big time jealous.

QOTD 1: Led zeppelin hands down was my favorite. Todays music sucks.
QOTD 2: A 10 speed bike “opening day” of Baseball many years ago.

  • Don Simpson

    Hilarious post!!! Although, its “Freeney”.

  • Doug From New Orleans

Hey what's the deal with you Gary? Why are you hating on the Saints? The stars are lined up for the Saints this year. The “Who” Dat Nation will be enjoying the “Who” right before we win the Superbowl on February 7. Sorry Gary, I don't think the Jets will be there! Good show as always. Good luck with the Jets, You'll need it!
QOTD: Led Zeppelin all the way!! I'm old school.

  • Green Pea

    Mott was sick today

  • scotty8m8

Gary, Love ya….but Peyton's gonna beat you like cornbread batter….like ya said somethin' bad about his mama….like ya stole somethin'. But, that doen't matter cuz it's NFC all the way.

  • Don Simpson

Woah, I’ve never head of that band but I’ll have to check them out. Thanks!

  • lucky stiffs… q(s)otd: (1) eminem, (2) won a trip to hawaii at the meadowlands racetrack.

  • mikebest

Can't really answer QOTD yet, need to give it some thought but what an insanely good episode! I love how happy the Jets winning makes you, as happy as I was when England beat Australia at cricket last summer!

    Cheers guys

  • mikebest

    Clam Broth? Are you insane?

  • taper41

    Great show.

Red Beer: aka Red Eye (often made with bloody mary mix as my bar guests order it).
qotd (gary): 1 sparking for every 100 non.
qotd South Dakota: Good music production is slowing but still exists and tends to be found more in small clubs than on the radio.
qotd Minnesota: Literal chance: $900 in an hour on the blackjack table. Figurative chance: Picking out my dog. How anyone can choose one thing that young out of a litter of 10 or more and end up with an amazing, healthy creature is pretty darn lucky.

  • castello

my second comment, around number 20 got lost?

  • scotty8m8

    Sparkling to Still ratio: 3 – 8….big bubblehead…..love rose's & bracchetto's.

  • lindsayc77

I'm not done watching the episode but OMG YES do a whole month of sparkling wines!! I would LOVE that!

I don't drink nearly enough sparkling wine and I love it. LOVE.

QOTD: Maybe one for every 5-7 bottles? NOT ENOUGH!

  • johnfarrin

    Gary's QOTD: 1 IN 300
Brian's QOTD: I think there is some good R&B STUFF today. Really like Josh Stone. Overall, nobody comes close to the Beatles and probably never will.
Nick's QOTD: I won $5200 from $20 on a Blackjack table during a 23 hand win streak using a progressive betting plan.
