lines of the day – ‘Mott:’I root for the Jets the same way you root for the Giants’..GV – ‘so you hate them’ and one of the best lines of all time, ‘this show all week is going to be almost unwatchable to anyone who can’t deal with Jets talk’

Phenomenal show – I always love the ones where GV is pumped by recent Jets victories and his mood is through the roof for this one

Is it just me…or did Mott miss the 85?

QOTD #1: Yes…Trent Reznor, Joshua James, and other musicians that continue to tell stories and stir conscious thoughts through words and sound

    QOTD #2: I have no clue…

  • GreggB

Ok Big G, I had to jump in on this one. You have never heard of Tomato juice and Beer? Does BUDWEISER & CLAMATO CHELADA ring a bell? Don't you sell Beer? Hmmm I thought you had some Beer knowledge. Long before I was bitten by the Wine bug I perfected by palate for Beer. I think you graduate from Beer to Wine. Try Tobacco sauce in a Heineken too.

Q's OTD: 1st one: Yes they still make great music in all forms. from Green Day to Lil Wayne.
2nd one: I won a football pool and bought a bottle of 2003 Bryant with the winnings. Yum!

  • Gary, congrats but what happened to my Iowa brother Nate C! Yes do more sparkling wines and lets cook some food together!

  • RANDINTHECITY

Gary, I knew this would be a high-energy episode! LOL JETS!!!!

    Love bubbles!

QOTD: BRIAN!!! Zeppelin! YES! ..lol Yes, theres awesome music being created every day..listen close.

    QOTD2: Money!

OH! Gary, I caught you on Digital Life w/Shelly Palmer…great spot!
    xoxo

GV great show! It has been yrs and yrs since I have had a red beer. It is diff but good. As well as sparkling wines… 1-500 but would love to see more about it (not a full month lol but at least 1/2.

  • jaredlevy

I just had to say, it's ironic that the guy on the right wasn't much of a football fan because he reminded me so much of Andre from the FX show, The League (see Paul Scheer on IMDB).

QOTD 1: I think “good” music is a very effervescent term. What is good today will not be good tomorrow. The best mark of “good” music to me is whether anybody is still humming or singing the song in 10, 15, 20 years, just like you do with the 70s music.

QOTD 2: Definately one of my many poker wins down at the Borgata, too many to name ONE in particular.

  • I have been lurking since #509 (the scotch episode). I am a orphaned Lions fan who adopted The Jets mid season thanks to Gary, and I had to come off the sidelines to congratulate GV on the win. What a classic defensive battle. Two moments stood out (outside of the win of course). The first was when CBS cut to a shot of Woody Johnson. I thought “Gary is going to look great when he is that guy. The second was when the hideous ruling came down on the Jim Leonhard recovery. It was a complete pass in my book. I was shouting at the TV with everything I had.

P.S. I live in Vegas now but I am from the upper peninsula of MI and we had bloody beer all the time. Good stuff. The salt in the juice brightens up the beer.

Gary's question: No. Make your point but a whole month will leave the folks who just aren't into sparkling feeling cold.

QOTD 1: It changes for me too, but right now my favorite current band is Tool. Having sad that, I don't think a whole lot of Maynard's wines.

QOTD 2: I got off of work as a pit boss at The Luxor one night about 10 years ago and went to see a bartender friend at The Rio. I was just about ready to leave when the hottest cocktail waitress on that shift mentioned she wished she knew how to shoot dice. I volunteered. She held the dice for 29 minutes. I was in $200 and pressed it up hard. I walked out with $9,000…and the girl. Not bad for a guy who hardly ever gambles.

  • scotty8m8

Speaking of Jack-Rabbits…..Rabbit stew with white beans & root vegetables….peppered generously.

  • Coleman

I drink about 1 bottle of bubbly for every 100 or so red, white, and roses.

Led Zepplin is the greatest of all time but I do think there is plenty of good music being made today. The catch is most of it sounds like old music. Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, The Black Keys, Andrew Bird, Ben Harper, Jack Johson, Bon Iver, Cat Power, Fleet Foxes, The Dead Weather, and Sunset Rubdown are all fairly current and very talented bands/musicians. As a Zep fan you should definately check out The Black Keys and The Dead Weather.

I won a drawing that got me a sky box for me and 16 friends to see The Cowboys play the Vikings a couple of years ago. Free beer, free food, Miller light promo girls. It was a blast and Dallas kicked their butts so we had an extra good time.

Gary Im shocked no one has ever asked you for Micheladas before. Here and Texas its usually beer with bloody mary mix or clamato.

  • EmZeeGee

We haven't heard of red beer, but my DH just posted about it on Facebook and immediately got a reply from a friend who has had it and likes it. So we're just not up on our beer.

Please do lots of sparkly wines! We want to drink more sparkling and dessert wines this year.

QOTD 1: There's always been good music and bad music. Older music appears to be better, just because what has lasted and is still played today is the better stuff. Every now and then you hear some absurd, awful song from the 1960s, say, and you realize that crap was produced then, too. Today's music will go through the same process, and the best of the best (musically, catchy-ness) will last longer than the rest.

QOTD 2: I got a light-up elephant at a Yankee Swap this last December…that's like a game of chance, isn't it?

Great show; it's nice seeing fellow Vayniacs!

  • QOTD: 4-5 bottles of bubbles a year (out of ~300).

Having a month of sparklers on WLTV would be as likely as:

    1. Laid-back Fridays every week
    2. 1 blind-tasting a week
    3. (Ironically enough given this episode) reducing the number of episodes with guests

    Edwardo

  • Terrance

Gary! Gary! Gary! I guess in the Dakotas it's called Red Beer but elsewhere (in Japan where it was NOT invented) it's called a Red Eye. Wow… I'm more surprised that it's such an obscure drink. I thought everyone who was a regular drinker knew of it.

  • lordsauvignon

I only have sparkling wines around New Years. I would say thats what makes them special to me. There is an ambiance that goes along with them. To try them more frequently would almost knock them down off that pedestal. Thats just for me, maybe that would be a good thing, maybe not.
GVQ: Please don't do a whole month of Sparkling wines. Maybe a week or two tops, but keep the flow changing. The variety of the show is its greatest strength.
QOTD1: Yes, but good music has shifted from pop culture to soundtrack music. Instead of Lady gaga and the like, try the 300 soundtrack or Gladiator soundtrack for starters. Might just be my preference but I believe great music is still being made, we just have to look deeper.
QOTD2: Best thing I won in the ultimate game of chance was the love of the Lady of my life.

  • Great episode, Nick and Brian did a nice job. So nice to have some down to earth guest on the show. Gary, tomato beer, bloody beer, the Mexican drink Michelada have been around forever. Give them a try, you will like.
QOTD: Yes, Black Eye Peas,Coldplay,Modest Mouse
QOTD: I won a Roman Empire Computer game, from Kevin Rose, when he was on the Screen Savers.

  • Red beer? I was drinking that in the early seventies (0bviously before I was of legal age!)

    A month of sparklers? Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Still good music being made today? Hah! See my answer to Q1. Obviously not. 😉

Most I ever won in a game of chance? Not much. I tend to avoid games of chance if I have to put something up that I might lose.

  • DKBTex

Congrats GV on your J-E-T-S JETS… JETS. JETS…

QOTHD's #1. No on the good music… ZZ- Top still the best!!!!!
#2. I put a $100.00 on black 20 in Vages and it hit!!!!
#3. GV, NO on the bubbles… I only drink it on special occasions

  • Jay

QOTD: A month of sparklers, OH YEAH!!!!! (Sorry, Senator…)

  • drt999

GV's comment — do you really think you can keep anything going for a month?
CT breakdown over the last 2 1/2 years: 23 sparkling
And I never heard of 'red beer' either

Guest QOTD 1 not into pop, sorry; so the Vienna Philharmonic still makes great music!

    Guest QOTD 2 I rarely win, but I did win a turkey once. . . .

  • scottEJ

Thankg guys. Nice win by your Jets, G. I'm riding w/them throughout.

QOTD 1: Pazz on the month long only sparkler. If so, how about opening with one per ep? Theme it: Spanish wine – Cava; Italian – Proseco; American – sparklking from the states, etc.

QOTD: 2: I haven't liked anything on the radio for years. That's not to say that there is no good music being produced, it's just not what is being played.

    QOTD 3: Free shipping.

  • ericworre

Yes, Vikings and Jets would be SWEET! But sorry, my Vikings would have to win that one. 🙂

  • elaineegan

Great having two nice guys with a passion for the Rhone on the show. But please reconsider the microphones, it was impossible to hear your guests during most of the show.

  • drewmatich

Love the shows with the Vayniacs. And congrats on the Jets. Hope you look like Everett in about 3 weeks.

QOTD: I'm at about 50 bottles of still for every bottle of bubbs. But then I don't really drink carbonated anything. That said, I could definitely benefit from a week of shows about bubbles. Sorry, but a month of it would be like watching curling.

QOTD#2: Favorite artist switches between Springsteen, Costello, and The Who, with occasional bursts of REM and the Smithereens.

QOTD#3: Fiancee hit a Royal on a video poker progressive machine at the Rio. Two hours later, I hit a 4 ace bonus at Texas Hold 'Em for $5k. Been slowly giving it back to them ever since.

  • some game yesterday GV, seems like yesterday when you were chanting about the Kellen era being here….

I do like Vacqueyras as a good Rhone valley alternative from price point perspective, though quite a lot of them are creeping up in the 30s range, just opened the 07 Xavier by mistake the other day…very good structure, but it was too young….

The champagne tasting month thing is a superb idea; I myself drink more sparkling wine than whites. Even if you dedicated one whole week to it, I think it would be very educational for people and a good way to mix it up, which is always a good thing.

and congrats to the gentlemen for winning the contest.

  • frosty1973

Bloody Beer…outstanding combo, but only use Bud and Miller (pilsner/light) type beers. If you want to kick it up a notch use Major Peters Bloody Mary Mix. As for music, there is some good artist and time will tell (John Mayer, Cold Play, Dave, …and Kid Rock has a lot of talent)… Go Jets !

  • Mia

So happy for you, Gary….the Jets did it for you! Wish I could say the same for the Ravens 🙁 but wish you the best and hope the Jets go all the way!

QOTD1: I was a teenager in the late 70's and very into music (Jethro Tull, The Who) and I think there are still great bands out there today. Take a listen to “The New Pornographers”.

    QOTD2: $100 on a scratch-off ticket.

  • MIchael C in MKE

Favre is going to the super bowl for sure. I wouldn't put money on the Jets but I'll cheer them on anyway.

A sparkling week would be great. Though what about the double blind cab show you talked about doing? I'd rather see that.

QOTD 1: I couldn't hear that dude's question something about music. Newer music or something? Andrew Bird, Phoenix,
QOTD 2: A bottle of Whiskey

I can't believe you've never heard of Red Beer. I think Bud for a while made a beer with tomato juice.

  • First off, I have to spend a minute on the unbelievable Jet win. I have to change my flight on Sunday so I don't miss the game. I guess I should have considered the AFC Championship when I booked last month.

Ok, back to business, cool show. I would love to see more guests picked by contests throughout the year, if that's feasible. I don't drink much from the Rhone but its nice to see there are some value plays worth trying.

QOTD 1 – Must be at least 250 to 1. I did have some Sparkling Pointe from Long Island over the weekend which I liked a lot.

QOTD 2 – I think there is still good music. I like Jam Bands like Phish, Umphreys Magee and Disco Buscuits.

QOTD 3 – The best thing I ever won was $3000 in keno but the most exciting was a 42inch TV

  • Chilean Wino

Great show! Best thing I ever won was a weekend getaway to Tulum, Mexico. They stopped making good music once Soda Stereo (Argentina) broke up…the father of Latin Rock. Turning into a little Jets fan with all their Rookies. Do you still get sh&^t about denouncing the Mark Sanchez pick on national TV? I think it was hilarious and hopefully not a sore spot.

  • dmcassidy

New music? My Morning Jacket. They have a 70s sensibility.

  • jrodenbiker

In the Dakotas?especially where the population is thick with descendants of Germans or Germans-from-Russia?Red Eye is something very different.

There it is a type of punch, most often served as a shot to every guest at a wedding. The recipe varies by whether you use caramel or fruit juice, but it is essentially sweetened Everclear (grain alcohol) aka German Schnapps.

    Typical Caramel Recipe:
    Ingredients
    * 1 liter Everclear
    * 1.5 liters (~6 cups) water
    * 500 grams (~2 cups) sugar
    Directions
Cook the sugar until it is a light amber and just begins to smell like caramel. Slowly add the water, stirring constantly, until well mixed.

A typical fruit juice recipe (this is often called “jungle juice” instead of Red Eye) will just mix 1 liter Everclear, 1 liter fruit juice, and two liters lemon lime soda pop (or ginger ale, or 1 liter pop and 1 liter club soda).

Make sure you have enough to give every guest 12 and older a shot!

  • Cool show. I like having “regular” guys as guests.

QOTD 1 – Much of todays music is too manufactured. The days of real multi-hit bands / artists that have deep roots in music and make their way up from the local bar or pub are gone.

QOTD 2 – Would take me too long to remember.

GV – Just remember the more the Jets win, the higher the price will be for you to buy them. 😛

  • adrums

Nice show. Red Beer sounds quite healthy, loaded with lycopene. Some '04 rhones are indeed on the austere side, which can be a good thing when joined with food.
QOTD1: As for music of today, Gustavo Dudamel and the LA phil are making some exciting (if a tad glitzy) strides at Disney Hall.
QOTD2: By chance I was born in an incredibly rich (for the time-being) and safe country. That's quite boss, as it were.

  • AWESOME SHOW. Wish I could have been there!

QOTD1 – Yes, there is lots of good music, there's just a lot more bands to wade through. My current band of choice is The Shins.

QOTD2 – I won the NCAA BBall pool my senior year in high school. I won $38 bones by picking Kansas (D. Manning)!!!

  • Cool Show. Go Jets! My girlfriend had a dream that they would win and I told her that she was crazy. Also (and I swear on my mother and father's lives who I love very dearly) we made preseason Superbowl picks back in August.

    My Picks:

    1. New England

    2. Chicago
    3. Tennessee

Awful. Her Picks (in this order):

    1. Colts
    2. Saints
    3. Jets

We only picked 3 teams. Scary. Anyways, I loved the, “I dream of a world” line as I'm sure on MLK jr Day you HAVE to have meant, “I have a dream”. Funny stuff! Keep rocking it!

QOTD #1: One month is crazy, but why not.
QOTD #2: Phoenix, Modest Mouse, Queens of the Stone Age <– Brian would like that one
QOTD #3: Superbowl Pool. My buddy's uncle bought me a $10 box without me knwoing. He said I could have the box but I could see the numbers until I paid him. I made the bet to break a $20 to pay for my buddy's pool. 4 quarters later the final score was my one $10 box and I won $500.00. Looking for some of that luck this year betting on the JETS of course.

  • BWicked

    Gary,
    Congrats.
In Texas we call them “Red Draws”, usually ordered in a bar (rustic)
    by the pitcher.
    QOTD: 1:10 sparkling:still
QOTD: Lots of interesting music today (to a 46 year old guy)–everything from the
Magnetic Fields to Girl Talk ( a mashup homage to “old” music)
QOTD:I just realized that I must be unlucky.
    Have a great week.

  • teckdeck2008

Qotd1: One month sounds a bit extreme, but I would settle for one sparkling wine every show.
Qotd2: I feel like good music is still being made these days but you got to looker for the newer stuff much more than the older stuff. Because the 70's music has had the luxury of time to weed out the riff raff so to speak.
Qotd3: One time in boy scouts in middle school i won 3 items at the monthly raffle. It was pretty awesome.

  • Dr. J

g, just had to send you a congrats ! never, in a million years, did i think the JETS would have gone this far. as a patriot fan, whose season ended miserably, i now change my allegiance to the green team and hope they will continue their post season performance. it is especially important that you guys beat those pesky colts. good luck, and thanks for the past 800 episodes.

  • Anonymous

QOTD #1: A week straight would be enough. A solid month would be 3 weeks of me not watching.

QOTD #2: I play guitar (badly I must say) and I don’t hear any new good music at all. It’s style over substance now until the record companies go away and something new replaces them (see Trent Reznor’s interview on Digg Dialog for more info on that)

    http://revision3.com/diggdialogg/trentreznor

QOTD #3: When I lived in Alaska, I wasn’t going to go to the office Christmas party until one of my co-workers bought a ticket for me and “made” me go. Well, they had a drawing with those tickets and I won the 2nd place prize, $100 cash which I later used to buy a round of 20 shots of Surfers On Acid for everyone standing near me at the after-party (you know the after-party is ALWAYS better then the party itself)

  • The OAK monster lives in INDY. His name is Freeny !!!

  • bosswald

Micheladas are common in San Antonio. Beer with spices, peppers, lime juice or tomato juice depending on the bar. Served over ice, they can be pretty refreshing.

But not an alternative to wine…

  • gary, i don't drink sparkling wine, except at the occasional wedding. i think the one month of sparkling wine episodes would be great, so long as you keep it interesting/informative-like the time you had a master of wine guest.

    qotd: bruce springsteen is god

  • YES!!! There is still good music. Just don't listen to the radio. Since you like Led Zeppelin you might like these bands. Dr. Dog, The Black Keys, Iron and Wine, Them Crooked Vultures, Grizzly Bear, Delta Spirit, etc. I could go on forever. If you want some more bands just reply. I have many more.

  • jrodenbiker

If you like classic, blues-based rock (like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, etc.) you need to check out Wolfmother.

I'd also recommend anything Jack White does: The White Stripes, The Raconteurs, The Dead Weather.

  • Hello!

A few questions to answer today… Sparkling Wine/Champagne to Wine ratio…I love sparkling wine, however, I don't drink a lot of it at home. Usually it's on a night out or over the holidays. So I would say 10 bottles to every 20-200.

Red Beer…drank a lot of those in the college days (morning hangover cure) at Washington State University. Go Cougs!

Music; I am a big fan of jazz and blues and standards, so I think there is still a lot of great music being made (Diana Krall, Michael Buble, etc.) I still listen to pop however, in my opinion, it's over-produced and the sounds are so layered to cover up the lack of true skills, it's just not the same as the great music that was made 70s and earlier.

Best gift in game of chance? I'm not that lucky so it was probably the $280 I won at a $1 slot machine.

Go Jets! Have a great week!

  • Aurelius46

    Great show!

Got close on that jets prediction. (I said 21 20 last friday). Should of heard my friends go off on me when I said the Jets will win. Don't think that Rex Ryan D will favor as well against ol' Peyton Manning. He has seen that type of blitz D a lot against the Ravens of old. But man, Shonn Green is a straight BEAST! Hopefully he wont have a Matt Forte like sophomore season!

Anyways on to the wine. Haven't had much experience with wines from the Rhone, I have sampled Goats de Rhone though which I believe is created by similar grapes as Cote de Rhone but in a different area. Wasnt too impressed with it.

QOTD 1: No on the bubbly all month but I like the idea of opening with one every episode.

QOTD 2: No massively produced music is good anymore but its out there just gotta dig deep.

QOTD 3: Dont play many games of chance. I've won some NCAA brackets the most being one for $120

  • I meant 10 bottles to every 200.

  • Chris

    RUSH!!!!!!!!!!

  • NIB

Nice job boys, although your better men than I am,I would have picked a 2007 CDP probably something expensive….lol.

Brian's QOTD:Try listening to anything that Jack white has done, white stripes, raconteurs ect. Also, I just watched a great Docu. with Jimmy Paige, Edge, and Jack White and it was awesome.

    Nick's QOTD:Not a god damn thing………..@#$%*….lol.

  • Stoked for your win Gary — congratulations!

It’s a blatant plug, but I’ll go for it anyway: it’s all in a good cause so I hope you’ll allow me to promote WINE FOR HAITI (http://tinyurl.com/yeo6o54), a charity wine auction to help raise funds for the disaster relief effort. Thousands of dollars-worth of wine have already been donated and we’re trying to get the word out to generate as much cash as possible. People are dying and we CAN do something about it. I hope you’ll help.

    Cheers!

    Matt

  • wooden palate

Red beer sounds awful to me, but the local supermarkets here in the LA Basin sell cans of beer with Clamato, so what do I know?

QOTD(1): I drink maybe one bottle of sparkling wine out of every 20?30. Not enough. (A month of sparkling wines would be useful as long as you mix up the price points; otherwise, it's just food porn.)
QOTD(3): (Old? I went to high school in the '70s, you young whippersnapper!) Yes, there's lots of good music still being made. If your Internet connection's fast enough to stream, kcrw.com/music/eclectic24 is an interesting place to start.
    QOTD(4): Can't think of a single thing.
