lines of the day – ‘Mott:’I root for the Jets the same way you root for the Giants’..GV – ‘so you hate them’ and one of the best lines of all time, ‘this show all week is going to be almost unwatchable to anyone who can’t deal with Jets talk’

Phenomenal show – I always love the ones where GV is pumped by recent Jets victories and his mood is through the roof for this one

Sorry G, its been a long time. Laid off as a rep., need anybody in the Jerz? πŸ˜‰

QOTD1: Yes, but perhaps good modern music doesn't fit into the classic melody, verse, refrain structure that was such a mainstay of classic rock outfits of the late 60's and 70's. And if Led Zeppelin s a favorite can we really discount the recent work of Robert Plant and Allison Krause. Thats good music.

    QOTD2: Satisfaction

  • urbwes

Congrats on the Jets win. I must confess, I feel a good amunt of satisfaction with Jets wins; I'm almost a fan. Vikings are my team and a superbowl with both would be awesome!
QOTD#1: Jazz and Classical music are fresh. Check Dave Douglas (jazz) or Phillip Glass (think the movie Signs, he was also on Colbert recently).
QOTD #2: I won a free t-shirt at a local college before a cadaver lab when I was in high school. Go Briar Cliff! Too bad it was XL.

Awesome episode. I'd like to see more easily found wines reviewed.

  • alanfavell

Montirius is a perfect example of the divide between new world taste buds that like fruit and old world types who are not afraid of earthiness. One person's wild mushroom is another person's fungus. I have had this wine a few times over the last year or so and it needs more time. How long was this wine open before it was tasted?
If you are interested in Vacqueyras, check out (Domaine Monardiere) another producer who is about 4 kms away from Montirius.

  • boomy13

Nice show!!! I am a Vikings fan as well, and am very happy about last Sunday (Jan 17, when the Vikings blew out the Cowboys, 34 to 3). So Gary a share the same joy you do. And if we see the Jets in the Super Bowl, look out for the 4 Norsemen!

QOTD: A great musical artist that I like more and more with each time I listen to him, Van Morrison.
QOTD: I just got back from a GREAT trip to Japan, and was randomly assigned the BEST host family any student or person could have ever asked to have. And I miss my Mama Yoko.

Gary, if you can find sparkling wine that is affordable to a student's budget ($15 or less) than go forward with the sparkling wine month. By the way, I'm enjoying your book and will be finishing it soon.

  • TheWinedown

DEFINITELY do the month of sparkling! How awesome would that be? I have a decent number of sparklers per year (I try to make it something other than a “special” wine) and would love to hear, see and learn more about it. I think everyone would benefit.

  • barwarrior

Best thing I ever won in a game of chance was during the NFL draft in April, 2000. I grew up a Browns fan but couldn't mentally make the transition be to be a Baltimore fan and was sick of not having a team. I said “the team that picks Chad Pennington in the draft will be my team from now on, no matter what.” I've been a Jets fan ever since.

  • GV you brought the Thunder today. Maybe it's caused your got supercharged this weekend. Looking forward to the rest of the week shows. The Jets aren't getting any respect, opened as an 8 point dog. Two weeks in a row, I took the Jets with the points, give me the Jets and the points. Don't know if they win, but they'll cover.

  • Gary's side question: For a while there I tried to do a sparkler every Friday, but I haven't completely followed through because Friday is also a good day for those non-weekday wines. In any case, Cava has been my beverage of choice due to its fruitiness. Never gotten into Prosecco because the ones I've tried never have the same level of fruit. I do like Champagne, but it's still pretty expensive so I mean… more on CW? :-D. I did have a 1990 Jacquart that rocked my flippin socks off, so that story isn't quite done yet.

QOTD 1: Yes, they do. Though it's mostly covers of great old songs. Great example: John Mayer Trio covers of Hendrix. No, not most of John Mayer. Not my thing. John Mayer Trio covering Hendrix. Rock on 60's and 70's (I'm 25 btw, way before my time)

QOTD 2: I've made a few hundred dollars playing Craps. That's about it.

  • QOTD 1: Probably about a 1 sparkling to 100 non-sparkling wine ratio. Now that I stop to think about it, that's terrible.

QOTD 2: Yes, but it doesn't seem as big, does it?

QOTD 3: Money, flat out, gambling making money is fun. πŸ™‚

  • dwharper

I am a Jersey boy, long time in SoCal, who just caught you on CBS Sunday Morning and love the Jersey boy meets wine asthetic. Maybe Gary should just do a regular show or featured sparkling wine segment each week, so that we get a constant reminder of wonderful sparkling wines. And I don't mind guests if they are good guests. Heidi Barrett, any day any time…Rich kids with no commitment to wine, no thanks. Also, I think the show needs a production makeover for lighting and sound, considering the popularity and importance of this little show. And Gary could certainly use a producer who sets up segments, guests, locations etc. I think this makeover could help the message but without taking away any of the charm of Gary which is the show.

  • gotsha

QOTD #1…Good music today = Spoon, Patty Griffin
QOTD #2…I've won a few dollars playing backgammon

  • Robby Mac

In RE: to “red beer”, instead of tomato juice, try mixing Clamato w/ your favorite brew.

  • LOL, you deleted my double-post, but you deleted the wrong one: reposted:

QOTD: Good music these days -> Type O Negative (from Brooklyn). Think Black Sabbath meets The Beatles. Unfortunately, it takes them at least 3 years to finish an album. And yes, they sell albums!

On a related note, the singer, Pete Steele, used to drink up to 4-5 bottles of red while on stage during concerts…

  • Pablo

The Jets got lucky. The Dolphins beat them twice this year. Mark Sanchez is a one year wonder.

  • mikebest

Single greatest moment of WLTV 13:23 “This is brilliant…” has to be the introductory line to the WLTV best of the best.

Give me a shout out if you live in England!

  • JasonGonzales

QOTD: I'm new to wine, so I've been trying everything. Right now whites are dominating for me. I had a sparkling the white wine yesterday with dinner… The ratio is about 1 to 6 so far. Hope that helps.

QOTD: Death Cab. Radio Head. Modest Mouse. Jack Johnson.

QOTD: My Girlfriend is the best thing I've “won” off the game of chance. It's an epic Notebook type of story.

Great show everyone! Gary, I like it when you have honest but casual drinkers on the show. It serves as a nice contrast to your professional more experienced palette/opinion.

  • manonthemoon

Good show today and congrats on the Jets win, didn't see that happening got to say.

Month of Sparkling = NO WAY, talk about boring. I am with the guests as I might drink 5 bottles a year and that is being generous and counting half bottles.

QOTD 1: Yes there is still good music out there, but you never hear it pushed by the industry. Personal favorites are My Morning Jacket, Mastodon, Manchester Orchestra

    QOTD 2: Money

  • SOUR GRAPES πŸ™‚

  • NY Pete

I was going to tell him to GFH

  • Gary, You seem just as pumped as I thought you'd be. It's fun to watch.
I don't drink as much sparking as I'd like, do to poor representation/selection in local stores. Love cava and prosecco. I've been buying 07 Cotes du Rhone like it's the last vintage ever produced. Haven't been let down once.

    GET PEYTON!

  • QOTD 1: Probably 1 to 30. Like'em but just like your guests I don't think about buying sparkly unless, for the most part, I'm celebrating something.

QOTD 2: Good music.. yes. lots (especially in the indie rock world). My favorite Radiohead (still pumping amazing music)

QOTD 3: game of chance winning, was a Zodiac Inflatable Boat after picking a random envelop at a school fair in 1991

  • SPARKLING WINE WEEK: Don't do it! The thing with sparkling wines for me is that they are a great thing for celebrating or even a food pairing, but a whole night of it would be like going to the candy store and buying Pop Rocks and Lindt Chocolates and just eating the Pop Rocks. Sparkling Wines are more like part of the evening. Great show!
    Salute!

  • bradfromniagara

beer and tomato juice, is really the best drink for a hang over…i first learned about them when i was in Mexico…the bar tender said all the locals drink them, he called them a “red eye”. maybe because your eyes are so red when your hung over? Great episode. you should have people on that watch your show more often.

  • lawschooldrunk

One month of sparkling? Hell no! One month of Kosher wine? Hell Yes!

QOTD1: You need to stop listening to the radio and seek out “off the path” bands. Listen to the prog rock realm of music like Dream Theater, Spock's Beard, IQ, Symphony X, Neal Morse, Flower Kings, Arena, Pendragon, Planet X, Porcupine Tree, Transatlantic, Trivium, etc etc. Go to Pandora radio and find stuff for yourself.

    And of course, RUSH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

QOTD2: concert tickets from being the right numbered caller

  • jeffisrad

    Gary,

In California we drink Cheladas, Micheladas, and Chavelas. You gotta get on board!

Music: Kings of Leon makes great music with classic rock sensibilities.

Game of chance: After skillfully making it onto the stage at the Price is Right, I happened to win $500 on Plinko, bearly made it passed the showcase showdown, and by chance got a weak opponent in the showcase (and of course won). My prize… a trip to Las Vegas, where I happened to lose my $500 on one Roulette spin.

  • Not finished watching the show, not sure if anyone else has commented. Anheuser-Busch sells a Budweiser and Bud Light with Clamato juice. Clamato is tomato juice and clam juice.

It is very very popular in the hispanic community and is often used as a hangover remedy. It is very similar to a Bloody Mary in taste with a touch of fishiness. Cheers! lol.

  • Beeper

    will do, danke

  • Red beer, huh? Brickskellers in DC has an entire list of “Beer cocktails.” They're disgusting.

QOTD 1: Sparkling Wine Week (month, whatever)? BRING IT! Sparklings go with everything! I probably drink 1 in 30 like sasha… there's not great selection after the holidays.

QOTD 2: There's good music, just not so much mainstream. For mainstream? Muse. For lesser known? The Cat Empire, a blessing from Down Under

QOTD 3: Well, not so much a game of chance. At an a cappella competition, we got our asses handed to us. Luckily I won out and met my boyfriend. Feel free to puke (and laugh at my extreme nerdiness).

  • Beeper

Right on jrodenbiker, I’m glad somebody else knows what I’m talking about. Have you spent much time at liquor stores in the cities, though? I used to think Happy Harry’s was the best, but no longer…

  • Beeper

Tell your bartenders so they know what I’m talking about next time I’m down there and ordering one…

  • flavasauce

QOTD 1: There's lots of great music out there but you have to dig for it as music biz doesn't nurture talent anymore. Kings Of Leon (since you like Led Zep), Miike Snow, Neko Case, Antony, Feist, Pj Harvey, Bon Iver…….

    QOTD: Nothing is by chance……

  • A dumb Rhein king

Huge congrats to both Brian and Nick!!

Gary, I'm thinking that you liked that wine more because the Jets won yesterday. If the Jets would have lost, you would have been in such a sour mood that I bet you would have scored it in the mid 80's πŸ™‚

SQOTD1: Yes. I'm very surprised that is not a regular part of your show.

    SQOTD2: 0.01 bottles per red/white

BQOTD: Awesome. My two favorite bands ever are Led Zeppelin and Tool. So to answer your question, I would say Tool still makes some killer music. Mudvayne is awesome. If you want a more electronic sound, then check out the raw stylings of Puscifer. And if you can get past the growling in some of their songs, check out Between the Buried and Me.

NQOTD: Best thing that I won in a game of chance was meeting my wife in AZ during an impromptu vacation. I went down for a week, from MN, to visit my buddies. On the last night, my buddies were having a party. While we were waiting for my friend's girlfriend to get done with work, I saw this pretty girl, introduced myself, and then invited her to the party, turned out she was already planning to go πŸ™‚ We bs'd throughout the night and then watched the sun rise next to “the lake” (a very green, 3ft deep, man made pond). After I left, we stayed in contact and two months l8er, she moved up to MN to live with and eventually marry me. I thought it was ΓΌber lucky to meet my soul mate on the very last day of the vacation that I decided to take, on a whim, a week before hand.

  • A dumb Rhein king

btw, Brian, what kind of beer do peeps normally use to make red beer? A light lager, bitter ale, dark ale, … ?

  • Beeper

Am fans of a couple of those already, so I will definitely check the rest out…

  • DCaragher

    Gary –

Congrats! Great show…love the giddiness! Great guests!

QOTD 1: Great music is still being made…listen to Strike Anywhere, Bruce Springsteen, H2O, Sick of it All, Modest Mouse, George Clinton, etc…LISTEN TO THE BAND!

QOTD 2: Greatest thing of chance…my interest in wine!

GV's QOTD: I would say 4 -5 wines out of every 25 are sparkling!

  • WhoDat_Noir

    Gary,
after lurking for about a month… I'm getting in the fray.. mainly because my Saints Who Dat?! are continuing on like your jets.. and will be in the Super Bowl Favre has been on the record as a Saints fan
As far as the QOTD's sparklers ain't my thing strictly the holidays or big celebrations like when the Saints win the Super Bowl. I would much prefer a month of value plays as a college kid a month of quality sub 15 bone wines would be excellent and you could throw some sparkers in for craps and giggles.
Music is completely subjective. as some one who enjoys the Grateful Dead and Zeppelin I think bands like Widespread Panic, Umphreys McGee and .moe are making great music still today.
Most I won on a game of chance not anything that's sticking out at this time

  • audiofan

First drank “red beer” when I was in high school; it was OK…that was 30+ years ago. And I don't think I've had it since.
Like GV, I love champagne (the real stuff please, haven't found anything that challenges France); I would pour it over my corn flakes every morning if I could afford it. The ratio is probably 1/8-10 (champagne to other wines). I drink a bottle at least once a week.
If your guest likes 70s rock (Led Zep) tell him to check out Post Stardom Depression. They only have a couple records out but they're very interesting.
Everybody rolls their eyes, but the new Cheap Trick album (their best in 30 years) shows why they've been called “the American Beatles.” I also like many of the groups mentioned by other posts, but have really been getting into jazz from the late 50s/early 60s era. Miles, coltrane, Monk…you know the names.
I gambled on having a kid 26 years ago and came out a winner; all you dads out there “get it,” I'm sure. And now, back to lurkerland…

  • flavasauce

Oh and The Fleet Foxes have a beautiful classic sound too.

  • Altboy97

Fun show, interesting to think how I'd handle the situation of sitting and tasting next to GaryVee. Great call though about speaking up when there's so much upside, and little down. To me it really helps to go ahead and say what tasting the wine make me think of, helps me learn and appreciate more.

Sparkling – I'd say just mix them in more. If they need to be part of the mix, include them more often, doesn't need to be exclusive for a month.

  • Beeper

    Phish!

  • joelbombardier

Good Show! I am like most who drink very little sparkling (though have been trying to change that) and I would love to see a month dedicated to sparkling. Even sparkling RosΓ© which is even less appreciated than Champagne-style whites.

QOTD #1: There are tons of great artists and groups making some really really good music a small spattering would include: Knaan, The Meters, .M Ward, The Cave Singers, Amy Winehouse, and The Mountain Goats.

QOTD #2: I can't think of anything (though I's sure some exist)! Most things I win are out of hustle, love and dedication. Speaking of which, GARY! please let me know about the NY Times photo contest! Thanks!

  • WineWoman

At first, I thought he was talking about Red Beer as being a brand of beer. That was wild–mixing the beer with tomato juice.
Side Question: A month of sparkling wine…only if you open each bottle with the sabre sword. Ratio of Sparkling to Still Wine–1 Bubbly : 30 Still
QOTD 1: New music–Lady Gaga is definitely different. For a while, music went through a dry spell–lots of “stolen” backround tracks. I'm not insulted by Brian calling the 70's music old, because it is(and so am I) but it was one of the best decades ever for music. If he plays guitar, Kaki King might be of interest. Imogen Heap also did some interesting cuts for several TV series.
QOTD 2: Won $5500. in a Church raffle–which amounted to barely $4000. when Uncle Sam took his cut, but all in all a nice chunk of dough. πŸ™‚

  • glenncade

Dude, pepper meets slim jim?…awwwwwwesome! Sipping some Zin here and spit it on the iMac. I'm a Jersey guy and I make my own jerky. Chompin' on it now…. How about a show of Wine and Jerky/dried meats pairings? I'll co-host.

Giants fan, but rooting for your JETS.

    P.S. – saw you on 1/8 in Motown…riveting speech πŸ™‚

  • Beeper

I will check ’em out. Thanks!

  • Beeper

    alrighty

  • Beeper

Yeah, actually the first time I heard the White Stripes, I was confused – like there was a Led Zeppelin song I was not aware of!

  • amgryger

A month of sparkling wine seems a bit reactionary: maybe consider a week instead and then follow up with a sparkling episode once every few weeks after that. If you really want to get people drinking more sparkling wine I think you need to keep at for a while instead of just giving your viewers one big overdose.

QOTD: Yes, there is still plenty of great music being made, you just need to seek it out, which isn't even that difficult these days with the plethora of streaming music services and radio stations available…

QOTD: Can't think of anything I have won in a game of chance.

  • Beeper

    Agreed on John Mayer Trio!

  • Beeper

    Sorry my friend, I can’t rock to 7/8 time…
