lines of the day – ‘Mott:’I root for the Jets the same way you root for the Giants’..GV – ‘so you hate them’ and one of the best lines of all time, ‘this show all week is going to be almost unwatchable to anyone who can’t deal with Jets talk’

Phenomenal show – I always love the ones where GV is pumped by recent Jets victories and his mood is through the roof for this one

The enthusiasm and happiness here by all 3 of you is contagious.
QOTD Gary: I don't know about a month, but how about a solid week exploring Champagne, the rest of France, California, sparkling reds/roses, then the rest of the world? (and be sure to end it on the Laid Back Friday couch!) I probably consume about as much as the two guests, one bottle every other month or so.

QOTD1: I do not think there is music being made that has the broad appeal of say the Beatles or Rolling Stones. Unless you're Taylor Swift and getting played on every radio station in the country. But there is definitely quality music being produced. It's just that as everyone loads up their own Ipod with their own tastes, it becomes much more personalized and the Top 40 becomes much less important. That also makes concerts much more intimate and great.

QOTD2: Probably the amazing pack that Gary sent that I commented on in the last episode. I didn't know what I was getting and it turned out to be awesome. Second to that (a true chance) would be a pretty nice gift card I won in a raffle two years back.

  • There is still some great music being made these days despite alot of the crap that is on the radio. People have been throwing out a lot of good names but another one that I would add is Stephen Kellogg and The Sixers. Great Band. Great Sound. Great Guys. I go to Virginia Tech and BB King came here earlier this year and tore it up speaking of old music…

Don't think I've won anything too notable by chance so I guess I'm just about due

Gary – any interest in coming down to Virginia Tech? I play a part in bringing media in and you could have a huge impact on a lot of students… GO JETS

  • Beeper

always light domestic….Bud Light is my choice

  • hollisdevillo

there is some ok music being worked around. nothing too spectacular in my view. maybe in a few more years we'll see something new pop up.

i won two dollars on a lotto ticket once.

  • lawrenceleichtman

Almost impossible to say one band is better than another. I've been listening to music for 60 years. Of the bands in the past, Queen, Steely Dan, The Band, Dylan, Prince…..
Best I've ever done is $12000 at poker. I like Rhone but Vacqueyras has never been a favorite.

  • Don Simpson

Gary – awesome to see how pumped you are about the Jets!!! I'm psyched to watch you FIRED UP all week. Wondering if your scored will be higher?!?! Maybe someday the Redskins will return to being a dominant franchise. Hopefully Shanahan was a solid move.

QOTD1: Led Zeppelin, nicely done! I was down in New Orleans over New Years and saw a sweet tribute band called Zoso at the House of Blues. I'm right there with you bro, I was born in 1980, which was CLEARLY the wrong decade for me because classic rock is my favorite music. To answer your question… I lost faith in modern music when all the boy bands came out. Although I was into the Alternative music in the 90s (Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Bush, Green Day, etc.)

QOTD2: I even like the title of his question, “game of chance”. Sounds like a riddle, ha. This year for the 1st time I played in a “Fantasy Baseball HR League” (yeah I didn't know they existed either), finished first and won $540.

  • Don Simpson

12K, WOW! Did you win a tourney?

  • Beeper

    I get it!

  • Don Simpson

Gary – although I am a big fan of the bubbles (its my girlfriends favorite), I think a solid month of sparkling wine on WLTV would lose its fizz… How about a week straight?

Also, you gonna rock any blind tastings soon? I really liked your idea for the 2007 Napa Cabs blind since I'm going to a wedding out there in July.

  • rieslingrich

My wife is a CHARGER fan, Im a sports fan and love what the JETS are doing.
Maybe because we are in SO CAL, where we hated to see Sanchez leave.
Im trying more Sparklings, had a great Austrian one Schloss Gobelsburg, Brut Reserve.
Dont forget German Rieslings in 2010 !!!

  • Don Simpson

    DO A RED BEER SHOW!!!!

  • Nick_L

Just flew back into Minneapolis and saw the episode was up.

Thanks so much for the opportunity and the hospitality, Gary. People watching at home have no idea how much work you put in to make this show happen, and it's awesome to get to be a part of it.

  • Robinelle

I'm not going to watch the show now, but I watched the game and share your excitement. Congratulations – the Jets came through.

  • I gotta ask: his name's Rounds, he lives in Pierre and knows how to say it correctly. Is he related to Governor Rounds? Pierre ain't a big place.

Nice to see the Clos Montirius again. I still have a few bottles of the '03 I picked up after you did them in episode 24 (?) Pulled one out for Xmas, three hours of air and it was still a tightly coiled beast. Maybe it's finally ready to go?

Being an Iowa boy who used to live in SD, and a USD alum at that (a Coyote will kill both a bison and a jackrabbit, just so you know), I'm familiar with the red beer and many of my friends swear by it. Personally, I prefer just to drink better beer.

Sparkling wines? I don't drink all that many, mainly because it's not convenient to save the rest of it for later, so it's something you sort of have to plan. Best for special occasions or aperitifs at large dinner shindigs.

Q: Most of the stuff I've won had nothing to do with chance. But one of the nonprofits I used to work for raffled off a computer at a fundraising event out in the country, and I ended up buying a few tickets just to be nice. The following Monday I found out that I'd won it, and I made a good home for it in my office for the next five or six years.

    Get well soon, Mott.

  • rickredekop

Jack White can't really do anything poorly and Wolfmother didn't last long enough to be the next Led Zeppelin. But we are definitely on the same page. The documetnary “It Might Get Loud” is something to see if you have not already done so.

  • Rich of Cambridge MA

Fun guests tonight, and Gary rockin' the playoff beard! I'm rooting for Vikes/Jets, too, but may be pulling for the Vikings – although I like to see you so happy about the Jets.
I drink sparkling wine sometimes, mostly Portuguese Vino Verde in the summer. Don't think you've ever done a show on that, have you? Also, prosecco, usually mixed with Aperol or Campari.
Red Beer! Never heard of such a thing, but I've gotta try that. Thanks SD.

  • Don Simpson

Dude, you guys were awesome! Looked like you were having a blast! Great job.

  • Dominic C.

Gary, the state that wins the Super bowl, free ship!

    GV-QotD : 4 red – 4 white – 1 sparkling

1st QotD: There is good music being made, it's just that it's not back in the glory days where each and every song on an album is a great.

2nd QotD: Best I won in a game of chance, I would probably say a gift basket that is still sitting around.

  • Anonymous

    Miles swings it baby!!!

  • kylemittskus

I'm just going to cry until next season. Nothing else. Just cry.

    Welcome lurker Noir

  • philct

Mott gets a pass with missing the 85 point score on the first sparkling wine twice!!! No shot to the jersey right behind him!!! But again, a pass for being sick.. get well soon Mottster!!

QOTD: Once a year at most..
QOTD: I think that Dave Matthews may be the best songwriter of all time. Or at least on par with James Taylor, Bob Dylan, etc.
QOTD: I went to Vegas once and put a quarter in a slot and won 2 quarters.. I looked to my friend and said whoot, doubled my money, and walked away!!! LOL He was NOT happy!!

  • JasonGonzales

Agreed. Great job on the show!

  • JCN

#1: I drink sparkling wine equally as much as still wine. We always have a case or two of Schramsberg or S Andersen (always california). It's something my wife and I BOTH enjoy.
#2: Yes good music is still being made. My favorites… Young Jeezy, TI
#3: Just won $350 on my first spin of the roulette wheel 3 weeks ago in vegas!

  • Don, good to see a Redskin fan on here. I have high hopes for Shanahan. I think if Gibbs would've continued we would have seen good things too, but he got disillusioned with a few things and sadly went back to racing.

All the Way!!!! Canadian power trio!!

  • Gary's Question: yes, it would be cool if you did a series of episodes with sparkling wine, cava, prosecco, asti, sekt, cremant all that jazz. I drink probably about 10-14 bottles a year. Red Beer sounds interesting, will try it.

QOTD1: Good music, absolutely. Tastes may change and style may evolve specially with technology being used more and more everyday to make music, overall it depends on your taste, there are some traits that are universal, rhythm, tone, tessitura which are necessary for a piece to be enjoyable, and some improvisational techniques could yield great results; overall I believe there is still good music being produced. Two very different examples: Allen Toussaint and Charlotte Gainsbourg.

QOTD2: Good question, the best thing I've ever won in a game of chance is a home entertainment system, it was a raffle actually.

  • jtp375

Great upbeat show. A whole month of sparklers……I dunno. Maybe 2 weeks??

Beer and tomato juice. I know them as red eyes. Drank a ton of them when I was going to school down in Ft. Lauderdale. We'd hit the bar right next door between classes and slam down one or two red eyes. And its a great drink for a hangover.

QOTD 1. Led Zep, # 1 band of all time IMHO. 70's rock n' roll was the best. Check out 'Energized' by Foghat if you don't have it. The stuff of today just isn't the same. A band that didn't reach richdom that rocks the house is Candlebox. Give a listen to their first album and the newest release 'Into the Sun'.

QOTD 2. Won a couple of bucks in the lottery. Nothing substantial, but, hey, I'll take it!

  • Beeper

It’s 5 AM in the Minneapolis airport, and I still haven’t made it back to South Dakota yet from the show. We actually flew over Pierre (pronounced ‘peer’ – they don’t call Detroit ‘dee twah’) at about midnight and decided to turn around because of fog. I’m never getting home…

…but it was worth it. Gary actually flew all night from San Diego in order to make it back for the show. He definitely follows Chapter 9 from Crush It, if you know what I mean! It was pretty surreal to be hanging out in Gary’s office and actually tasting some wine with him, but he’s got an amazing nose – that Vacqueyras smelled exactly like a Slim Jim!

QOTD1: Do I think anyone is making good music any more? Yes! I wouldn’t have said that a couple of years ago, though. After exhausting every rare album by Led Zeppelin, The Allman Brothers, Clapton, Hendrix, SRV, etc…I came across Jack Johnson in college. Although completely different than what I was into at the time, I found a whole new genre of music that I love – G. Love, Donovan Frankenreiter, Mason Jennings, Zee Avi, Beautiful Girls, Amos Lee and Eric Lindell. After I’ve found a couple, sites like Pandora.com have jump started my interest in listening again. If you are into the more blues rock stuff like Clapton, Hendrix, and SRV, you must check out Indigenous. I’m also a pretty big fan of Blues Traveler, Los Lonely Boys, Spin Doctors, Sublime, Weezer and Phish among others.

As an aside, when I called 70’s music “old”, I was specifically talking about the awesome music made in the late 60’s/early 70’s, and I did not think of “old” as a negative term. If I asked you to pick between a bordeaux and an old bordeaux, which would you pick?

    QOTD2: See episode 767!

Gary: Thanks so much for flying us out to your show and being such a gracious host. This was definitely an experience I will never forget…

    KMurph: Ctrl+V above message here

PS Glad I could expand the palettes of you Vayniacs that are red beer virgins – don’t forget the green olives. Orange beers are also good, but for earlier in the morning: 2 oz OJ + 1 can beer. Mmm

  • swanreach

    Sparking shiraz rocks.

  • Christopher Scoggin

I think this is my favorite (non-industry) guest show. They where fun and interactive and you where is such a good mood! I am going to see if I can find that Vueve Ambal.

QOTD#1: I think I last had anything that was sparkling and was not (literally) grape juice was about three years ago. So… not very often.
QOTD#2: Is there >any< good music being made? Certainly. Is there much? No. But there is so much being made these days that the percentage is bound to be low.
QORD#3: As a kid coming off the “Vikings Fury” at Kings Island, I found a $100 bill laying on the ground. Not a game of change per say, but the biggest winning I have had (my luck (monetarily) sucks).

  • The Doors are my favorite band. Great music is still being made by bands such as Our Lady Peace, The Tragically Hip,Third Eye Blind etc.. A month of sparkling wines would be great if you covered all the different methods and nerdy facts.

Hi Gary I loged in to nfl.com and got the last 10 minutes 3q of the game, i got a text on screen for each play at 3 -7 it was midnight here in Ireland and thought it was all over how wrong was I. I see J Feely kicked a goal, Great Name.
Thank you for your time Gary

  • watchtvshowepisodesonline

The video is very nice the beatuifull bottle are placed in the front of the bench all they are celberate fully its was the interesting one i have seed you have clearly tell full details are about full show is interesting one.

  • Super show Gary, Nick & Brian!!!
These two guests were some of the best, well mannered everyday people I’ve seen on WLTV. It was so refreshing to see two ordinary people tasting, assessing and reviewing wines in the presence of the great host, Gary. Well done guys.
Regarding matching Sparkling wine with Sushi – check out my video blog http://blip.tv/file/2791539
qotd #1 – I think there is plenty of great music being produced today.
    qotd#2 – Nope

  • Brent Valle

Gary, longtime lurker, first time commenter. Congrats on the Jets win, even though it pains me as a Clevelander to see Braylon Edwards moving forward in the playoffs. By the way, I loved this show, everyone was in a good mood, and we all learned something.

QOTD1: I only drink sparkling wine on special occasions, even though I do enjoy whites fairly frequently. I think the price has just kept me from having that experience that gets me excited about sparkling wines.
QOTD2: I have to say I don't actually seek out music being made today. I hear as much as I'd like to in the car or out and about. But if I have the choice I like to listen to classic rock, audiobooks, or podcasts.
QOTD3: I pretty much avoid games of chance. If I try to win at something, I want at least some influence over the outcome. If I win were to win just by luck of the draw somehow it just wouldn't feel all that satisfying. Unless of course the prize were really sweet.

  • sonicgg

wow- crazy coincidance! I was just at my friends’ music store/cafe-bar and the ladies were drinking Red Eyes. Can’t believe you have never heard of them Gary. Total 6 Am opening bar Detroit auto-line worker staple I always thought.
Music: Major underground music fan, still so much great stuff coming out today. Check out Thomas Function:
    http://www.myspace.com/thomasfunction

Winning: hmmmm, not much of a gambler. I won about 50 bones at a year-end company party two years ago. Combined it with another 50 buck coupon and bought a ’98 Col Solare- hella tasty!!
Congrats to the Jets! And congrats on, jesuh curisto! 800 episodes!

  • greendragontre

It is late and I did not intend to watch the whole show… but it was so good I had to watch the whole thing.

  • Terroirist

That episode put a needed smile on my face. Great show. As far as yout middle QOTD – I Probably buy 5-6 bottles a month. Cava is a great QPR. It just goes great with everything. An aperitif, with mussels… and for the red beer S. Dakota man – There are some bands still doing interesting things today that are new and innovative. From Steve Martin with his 5 finger banjo picking technique to a few brooklyn bands like TV on the Radio and A Place to Bury Strangers. I am big into jazz.. I dig John Zorn quite a bit The Naked City stuff is fantastic.. As for “older” stuff I love Captain Beefheart. I like the third question. I don't seem to be lucky but, as the saying goes I'd rather be lucky than good any day. Perhaps it's a midwest thing but, I'll have a red beer now and then.. Usually hair of the dog type of thing for a hangover..
    Cheers!

  • code0017

Hey Nick, glad to see someone on the thundershow from Minneapolis! If you are on Cork'd you should look me up. I need some good wine suggestions. Thanks Man!

Talk about a great episode! Vaniacks unite!

QOD1: I drink about one sparkling a week
QOD2: GAGA thats awesome and I am on a huge roots kick right now

    QOD3:seriously cant recall

  • Aloha from Maui Gary. Been watching your shows for about 6 months now and enjoy every facet of your message from your wine to personal POV and wish you the greatest of successes. Thought it was awesome that you brought fans on the show, very cool. Would love to see more of that in the future.. I'm working on a blog right now and am going to dedicate a section of it to you called “my noob pallate”.. PS: thank you for making “Crush it” !, in a sea of noise at the bookstore it's probably the most relevant piece of reading material you can pick up..
    Love and Aloha, Kalani-

Red Beer Rules! Bud Light even makes a chelada style beer with Clamato.
    Qotd #1- I drink on average 4 or 5 a month.
Qotd # 2- yes, Come to Minnesota to find out.
Qotd #3- I won tix to a Vikings/ Packer Game in '08 for donating food to a food drive that the Vikings were putting on at Winter Park (Vikes headquarters). It was awesome.

  • Okay, I appreciate that a moderator has deleted the Wine for Haiti comment (presumably because I put a link to the charity in the post?) but I would appreciate it if you could pass the message on to Gary in the hope that he might give us a shout out on the show. It's a fund-raiser to help the disaster relief — to save lives — and we need all the help we can get to promote it.

About $10k's worth of wine has been donated in the past 24-hours alone: Wine for Haiti is growing but we need your help. I emailed AJ and Matt Sitomer yesterday but I haven't heard back from them yet. I really hope you guys can help. It would make a big difference.

  • I didn’t want the post to go on forever but I like a little string cheese now and then. Little hands is a good tune.

  • Cool_Dave

Hey Gary. You wern't nearly as obnoxious as I was hoping. Oh well.
I'm with Mott all the way. Rush had one good 80's album but after 1979 pop music just plain sucks.
Hey Mott, post what you listen to. My guess is Led Zeppelin or Tull or both.
Do not drink very much sparkling wine. Just bought a cava brut today. Also just had my '06 Telegramme du Pape and it was AWSOME!!! Funny I havn't had a cotes du rhone I like all that much. I had a Sterling vintner's selection Cab with dinner at Ruby Tuesday and it did not suck! A little fakey and sweet but I liked it.
Never won anything I'm afraid. 🙁

  • Cool_Dave

I agree about the sparkly episodes.
    And the Doors.

  • Cool_Dave

Dude! Totally agree about 70's and Yes, Zep, Rush and Tull are all equal in my book,

  • Cool_Dave

I do like what I have head of Dave Mathews. He has a great drummer.
