qotd: after goofing on washington state merlots for an afternoon with a friend of mine he waited a few weeks and invited me over. Upon arriving I see an open bottle of Northstar Merlot which is a washington merlot. He says you aren't going to believe tihs one, I've been letting it breathe. He poured 2 glasses and he was right I was amazed at how great it was. I found out later that my non belief had some validity because another friend told me that he poured another wine into that bottle that was 4 times the price of the bottle that he poured it into. I still have no idea where it was from or the actual price but it was a Merlot and it was TASTY!

Best Merlot is a 2004 St. Supery out of Sonoma.

I really enjoyed the “pretty girls” anaology. So true on both fronts.

It's too bad that people base their wine-drinking trends on Hollywood B movies. Tasting for yourself is the only way to go.

QOTD: I agree with whoever said Northstar Merlot from Washington State. Slightly pricey, but more elegant for $30 than a lot of those Napa oak bombs for $50.

  • Ben

Still love the show sorry i have been mia… favorite merlot is Souverain very good wine…

  • dfarley

I recently had the Emmolo Merlot from Napa, which I thought was pretty nice. Love the blind shows…

QOTD New Washington winery called Grand Reve. Their collaboration #4 is shaping up amazing. Tasted it 7 months ago and no one was home. Tasted it 2 months ago and it blew me away. Stevens Winery Merlot at 31.00 consistently outshines more expensive merlots.

Blind Tastings are my favorite, Gary. Looking forward to more shows like this in 2010.

Its all good Mott. Hope you get better soon!

Gary, totally understand your aversion to OAK. I'm curious why you and your dad liked
Caymu Cab so much? Isn't that a wine that has a very pungent oak profile?

QOTD: 2006 Kirkland Signature Merlot, Columbia Valley, Costco, $9 — thoroughly enjoyable and a great price.

Gary, being a fraud is one thing. But you have got to be the most arrogant fraud in the wine business.

  • Stephen

    To lewharrelson:
How about explaining your accusation and providing proof.

  • Why do u think so Lew?

  • pdemaio

got go with Grand Reve IV. Tremendous free run WA merlot. Merlot used to be my favorite wine, but after sideways, it seems like a lot of wineries have stopped putting the same level of care and quality into it. There best Merlots are going into blends…

  • I definitely need to try the gewurztraminer – sounds epic.

  • I love your blind tastings. I'm trying to watch all of them.

QOTD: I haven't had that many Merlots. I'm terrible at remembering what wines I've tried, liked etc. I got myself a little notebook and I'm gonna try to be more active on Cork'd for this reason. That's not a bad deal for the Italian Merlot, so maybe I'll start there.

  • Mike in C-town

Been avoiding Merlot, so many other things to try. I've had too much oaky merlot in the past.
That said, I plan to do a blind varietal tasting soon and would want to put a decent QPR merlot in there. Thoughts?

  • Thanks a landlord it! I acquired yet some insight. Life is so colorful, we should be able to live in, such as Korea and honor the planet. Human life is like rivers, slowly flowing, flowing rivers, flowing through the snow, flows through the prairie and ultimately into the sea, return to the embrace of nature, start a new reincarnation.
