  • Yea, it's somewhat unfortunate that he knew they were screw-tops despite the “blind” tasting because it definitely directed him away from Burgundy. I don't know how much it impacted the scoring, but I think the 3 days open were probably more impactful.

NO! Not a bad thing at all. There are little green cardboard cut-outs outside most of the little newsstands. I just wanted to mention that to him, because I think it’s a good thing worth noting. What author doesn’t want that kind of exposure, right? Sorry, my sarcasm caused some confusion, thanks DP_

  • QOTD: Not yet but I have your book on hold at the library. I have a feeling that I'll eventually buy it for my own collection down the road!

Recently, I tweeted (the picture of your book cover from @Powells) about my hesitation then you joked that I should buy it. 😉 I felt really cool that you actually noticed my tweet.

  • Experiment more with different styles of wine and you might be surprised. Most wines can benefit from some aeration, but the ideal time, like the wines itself, varies greatly! Typically, more tannic, structured wines (often meant to be aged, e.g. Bordeaux, Barolo, etc) need more time to open up, especially if they are drunk young.

  • KennethNDC

    no book…yet.

QOTD: I bought two copies, one for myself and one for my business partner, we are just in the beginning stages of our new business and wanted to learn from the best, great book, thank you for all you do!

  • Has anyone tasted some pinots from Patagonia (Argentina)?

QOTD: I got CRUSH IT as a christmas present. =) Santa Claus delivered! Ps. The real Santa is from Lapland (Finland), not North Pole…. Sorry, guys =D

QOTD: I got CRUSH IT as a christmas present too… it’s the gift that keeps on giving ;). Cheers Gary, inspirational. I’m running (and building, hopefully) my own golf video production company – Visual Golf.

I’ll definitely pick up something from Columbia Crest I see their wines in the grocery all the time. Thanks Robert.
MDSmitty — I’ll right there with you I rarely go above 15 bones for a bottle.
I’ll also look for that Freixdnet Cava
    THanks for the help guys

QOTD: nope…not available on http://www.amazon.cn , or anywhere else in China that I’m aware of.

  • folsson

QOTD: I have not order the book yet. I live in Sweden so it is harder for me to get it, BUT (big but) I have been planning to purchase it very very soon

  • The analogy I posted was quote from Kermit Lynch, although I agree in part with his criticism — especially when viewed in context of large blind tastings with scoring for competitions. Big, blowzy, oaky fruit bombs do well in these events because they can register on the over-taxed palates of the tasters. Elegance gets trampled in the swirl and spit stampede.

I like your analogy, too. In fact, I may well steal it for one of my wine columns.

Also agree wine and art and music should be fun, although there have been bottles and times and places where reverence was called for.

As practicing Catholic, there’s natural inclination toward reverence and wine.

QOTD: No, I read the blurb on Amazon.com and it seems to be more about business rather than wine, right? So i passed…
Only Pinot Noir that i really loved was from Willamette Valley in Oregon…

  • Who is selecting the wines for the blind tastings? Ian? Come on, out some more unusual stuff in there.. A pinot out of Germany or Switzerland would hava been nice.

    @QOTD
No, but I bought 101 wines!

  • QOTD: yes, I got it (thank you amazon.de) and I've even already read it! Great job Gary!

  • benrico

    no

  • LMNOPinot

    No. Sorry Gary.

  • YoungDave

I wonder if the open-3-days factor negatively impacted the quality of the wines because wines #1 and #2 were scored WAY differently by you and all of the major press… although you usually find contrasts with critics' scores, this was a bit more of a gap than usual. BUT great blind tasting episode once again- and the efficiency!

QOTD: You KNOW I got a copy of Crush It!, and I didn't grab one of the copies at the World Market signing when I saw you in LA, I purchased it from Amazon specifically in advance so that I could have it in time for the signing. I hope you win your bet!! Cheers.

  • ssravp

Great show Gary, and of course I bought, read, and loved Crush It!

  • Anonymous

    I knew it!
I’m a genius, just like my mom told me I was!

  • Lurker here. Apologies in advance since I haven't seen the show yet. But for the last three episodes, my Ipod nano won't synch the WLTV episodes. Am I the only one having this problem? Any suggestions? TIA.

  • winestein99

Great show Gary. Ive tasted two of the three pinots you had tonight and I felt about the samein the wine. Testarossa makes good stuff but I agree on the cost.

qotd. I havent gotten your book, but it is on my list of book to read this year.

  • winestein99

great show Gary. ive had both of the cali pinots and agree with you whole heartedly. interesting twist i might add.

qotd. no, but as soon as it show up in my library im there

  • drt999

Have to agree on the selection process!

  • stevo

Agreed. Another blind tasting with the same wines and less air time would be sweet.

  • rjsmall

Good show but surprised there was no South American pinot in the mix. What would also be interesting is to try two bottles of the same pinot (or any red for that matter) one that had been open for three days and one opened fresh or even four bottles – three days open / two days open / one day open and fresh.

    Liking the blind tastings.

QOTD: Not yet but it is on my list.

  • QOTD: No I didn't but I plan on downloading the audio version soon.
Why don't you make a champaign blind tasting for next blind episode? I don't think you've ever done it!

  • Anonymous

Sounds like a plan DPnCali. So the next blind tasting we both post our guesses and the total amount we were off by, and the person off by the least amount of points wins. I say that the winner gets to choose between either of GV’s books; either way works for me.

Alright then, good luck and I hope to talk to you soon.

  • boughtrecords

QOTD: YES and Loved it! I would say a 93+ and at a great price point. There were hints of passion and hype on the nose which were backed up in the taste along with full flavors of caring and a desire to help with a super long finish. I will be tasting this book for a long time.

  • Anonymous

Ok so we will do the winner getting to choose between GV’s books. By the way, the only reason I came up with the winner getting one of his books is because it related to the QOTD. If you have a different suggestion, then I’m open to ideas. Anyway, this should be fun. Good luck to you as well and I look forward to talking to you again soon.

I had trouble syncing this episode to the iPod Touch. Every once in a while that happens for some reason (not a space issue, I have 3 GB free).

Gary, now that the Jets season is over, it looks like you’ve started shooting like the Knicks. JK – that performance was more like the Nets.

QOTD – Yes, I picked up Crush It. It’s still in my reading queue, but I think you did have a good point on garyvaynerchuk.com about a month ago that the “Thank you” economy is real (I picked up the book before listening to that video, BTW). I assume the bet has something to do with that.

  • johnr

oddly, I pulled a 2007 Brewer-Clifton, was awesome in Nov, totally closed…pissed. But i am not touching any more 2007 cali. 2007 shea homer is Baller!

  • QOTD: yes, and loved it. Am seriously considering buying the audio version as well…

  • pedwards

    Love the blind tastings.

    QOTD – YES (3 copies)

  • Krunch

Good show, I'm sure the 3 days of decanting had a LOT to do with most of the wines, But then again it takes some people 3 days to finish a bottle.

    QOTD: Yes

  • stewartl

just bought the roco pinot the other day, awaiting it's arrival will compare my notes to yours and comment
No, I did not buy crush it

  • nitaT

I would have liked to see a French Pinot in there, that would have been interesting.
A tasting with same grape from different parts of the world, would be cool to see the results.

QOTD- yes I do have the book… and I told my friend about it and she bought it as well.

  • Nik_B

Love these blind shows – would have been great to get a few more in the selection.. at least one Burgundy would have been great. I just double-checked and it looks like there has never been a wine from Vosne Romanee on the show!

    QOTD – not yet

  • Eric S.

I am having the same exact problem, last three episodes have not been able to load on my ipod.

  • Still loving the blind shows…WTG Cali.

QOTD: I have bought a few copies…circulating them around with my MBA peeps while encouraging them to get a copy of their own! 🙂

  • hollisdevillo

oh man that was classic when mott turned on the garbage shot. i was looking directly at the garbage thinking gary would get it close, then the bag came flying in from the side of the screen. way off!!!! oh hilarious. highlight material fo sho.
hey gary, it might be neat to A: taste a wine from the barrel and rate it like some of the critics do, or B: get a critic on the show tasting some wines with maybe one or two he tasted earlier, and see what happens. eh? eh? ahhhh.

  • hollisdevillo

    you have a book????

  • “We now join WLTV, already in progress.”

These comments are looking more and more Facebooky, or is it just me.

    No Burgundy?

Last pinot I had was the Becker Pfalz from Germany (I forget what episode it was in, but it was in there somewhere). Nice light red, but it got even more schön overnight – nice little sappy/cranberry thing going on.

Q: Yes, but I haven't had time to read it yet. Where's this audio book I keep hearing about, that's got to be fun.

  • He shoot's he…misses 4 times!!

Great show. Love the blind tastings and PN is my fav.
