line of the day – ‘ He’s an Ultra, Ultra, Ultra, Fleer Ultra, remember those, kind of critic’

This episode lacked some of the usual sparkle; the guest didn’t bring a lot to the table (although pleasant enough) and I think GV got bored with him half way through

    I LOVE the Pinot!

  • carlo10

    aha! beat allan today!

  • do you guys see the show before posting? If not you are cheating 😀

  • ChrisNY2

    Thanks, nice show

QOTD: it's a blend..with merlot in it too..which the movie character hates.

  • jayhitek

QOTD: No idea. But I did like the movie and I like Pinot Noir before hollywood told me to!
    Enjoyed this episode a lot.

  • QOTD: the Varietal is Merlot and Cab Franc and why the movie is so funny for wine geeds. Or at least that what I heard.

    Wine Nerds Unite.

  • Charlie looks like hes having way too much fun on page 1 of his book. Possibly the best tasting pose I've ever witnessed.

  • PA baby!

  • castello

I thought I'd heard it was mostly or all Merlot. Great guest but not that great of a QOTD because most of us wanna be wine nerds have heard this irony/joke before. Get in here Charlie and tell us a little more about the book and why we need to read it.

  • Interesting show as I live in the DC area and have seen some of his events advertised, but never attended. Got to say he kinda came off as CAaD especially with that question of the day and the Oregon thing. Something just didn't set right, probably just me.

QOTD: we all know the answer

  • Neil

QOTD: Cab Franc / Merlot blend.

  • First, I am proud to be a part of “2010: The Year of the Guest on WLTV”, lol.
Second, GO EAGLES! Let's get McNabb outta there and do some damage.

QOTD: Already been answered, most wine geeks knew the irony. I am definitely gonna buy the book on Amazon, sounds cool.

  • Great guest.. will be getting his book…

QOTD: Although most people assume Merlot (as I did) was the main varietal since it's from St. Emilion, I had a feeling Charlie was leaning towards a trick question, and I was right. Looking it up yields this interesting blend: 66% Cabernet Franc, 33% Merlot, 1% Malbec

  • Cheval Blanc is a blend of Merlot and Cab Franc.

This was a fun episode. Charlie was a good guest, and we hope the book does really well. Odds are we'll be contributing to that cause in the near future.

As far as Pinots go, we recently had the pleasure of having a 2006 32 Winds Pinot Noir from Sonoma Coast that brought some serious thunder. It was made by Ehren Jordan (winemaker of the year 2008) from Turley and Failla (FAY-la). Great Pinot. Cheers!!

  • scotty b

Charlie, you're a nice guy, but wow did you insult the Vayner Nation with that QOTD.

GV, I can't believe you didn't reject that question???

  • Anonymous

Yeah, but the recent shows have been quite good. Really enjoyed Garrett and his beer.

  • It's not a choice to be a good father, it's an obligation. Good for mrs V 🙂

I am of the opinion that this in some way proves that most people (i.e the general wine consuming public) are in some way intimidated/uninformed about wine, or their own pallets in general. If I sound too elitist I apologize, but most people do not have a clue what it took for a glass of wine to be pored at any given meal or tasting room. The fact that a movie like this, filled with irony and satire can effect the wine market so much may be proof of the aforementioned statement. When people say they prefur dry whines, and are given blind tastings of wine with a little Sugar (.5g/100ml not very much at all) people usually prefer the sweeter one. But of coarse the most important thing to do, and find out, is drink what you like!

Dom, what did you think of this past weekend’s D.C. event? Not enough variety as in past years, I like Spain but there was way to much of it, not enough California or West Coast wines. Was not overcrowded so that was a bonus. Washington D.C. and dumptrucks filled with snow, perfect together…

  • brookelp

Great show! Charlie seems like an outstanding guy. I bought the book, btw! And I appreciate Gary's comments on Oregon Pinot (I live in Portland). Oh, and to clarify/substantiate, it can be ORegin, or ORegun, but never oreGONE. Rockin' show–great job!

  • garyleak

Parker can't be bought. But haven't some of the people who write for him gotten caught up in some hanky-panky with people in the business they write about and review?

  • wayno daaa wino

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAW, Pinot Noir in da Hizzy !!!!!!!!! :o)

  • missatiejacket

Nice episode. I liked this guest even though he doesn't watch the show as much as his self proclaimed “Vayniac” title would lead us to believe. Too bad the Burgundy sucked. I have never heard of that village and will still try a wine from Maranges when I see one that isn't too expensive. Thanks, guys.

  • Brent Valle

Gary, You can pronounce French place names but not a US state?

    Oregon = OR-ih-guhn

  • Box Pressed

Who thinks this guy reminds you of Ben Stiller?????? Com'on it's so there…..

  • vinoreviews

    Good episode and guest.

    QOTD has already been answered.

Has anyone had any luck finding good QPR red burgundy recently, if so what are they?

  • Mark

Of course the 1961 Chateau Cheval Blanc is Merlot based.

  • jason carey

07 is not the vintage in Oregon to age in 100 percent new oak

  • Michael C in MKE

To be honest I have never read the book either. Somebody told me that in the tasting room at Andrew Murray.

  • Bill_Murray

Nice shout out to the K-Gun offense! Go Bills!

Some questions / ideas: Can we do a double blind battle royale??? …or even better, a single blind round tourney with the winning bottle from the app going to the global showdown? Maybe you taste a couple blind, describe them, and we guess the grape / region? Or better again, maybe we all suggest our favorite bottle in a region / price range, and then we all go head to head by you tasting them and declaring the winner?

  • SourGrapesFC

We should just be glad they didn't have to pronounce “Nevada.”

  • He said he was a Vaniac early in the episode, so maybe the “stress” of being on camera made him forget?

  • carlo10

…just a ho-hum show for me. anyone else?

  • johnfarrin

QOTD: 50% Merlot-50% Cabernet Franc. When he asked it I kind of thought “soft ball” and went back 15 or so comments and didn't see anybody bashing him for insulting the Vayner Nation. Surely when I go all the way back I'll find the scolding 🙂

  • I did like the 13-year-old family sommelier story. I often would assist my dad on his trips to Shoppers or elsewhere for beer/wine/liquor…and I wonder how I got to where I am today, LOL. I will have to tell my sister to keep an eye out for DC events. Good luck with the book!

QOTD: Already answered. Would have loved to have sampled really old Bordeaux like that.

  • SourGrapesFC

    they can't all be winners.

Hurricane Ditka vs Macho Man Randy Savage: who wins?

  • QOTD as many have already stated or guessed is predominantly Merlot. Although in some vintages they blend in a little cab franc (maybe cab sauvignon too, can’t remember).

For more details on the whole sideways / merlot effect go you pick up a copy of Merlove (details in episode #775 http://tv.winelibrary.com/2009/11/25/merlove-episode-775/).

  • Rich

    Nice show…
QOTD: someone already answered this, but it's 66% Cab Franc, 33% Merlot, 1% Malbec, and aside from 1967, only 2002 was the same blend. Cab Franc is one of my faves!

  • Kevin

Interesting guest. Nice demeanor and energy. Doesn't measure up to the GV like others have, though.

QOTD: Cheval Blanc already answered (it's St. Emilion, so it's pretty easy to guess). BTW Gary, you may have jumped to 1947 as a potential year because that's the year of Cheval Blanc that they taste in the bar scene in Bottleshock…

  • 6:42 into this episode, but I had to pause to quote Jessica Alteri, “Wine is just a conversation waiting to happen”
