line of the day – ‘ He’s an Ultra, Ultra, Ultra, Fleer Ultra, remember those, kind of critic’

This episode lacked some of the usual sparkle; the guest didn’t bring a lot to the table (although pleasant enough) and I think GV got bored with him half way through

Why is it when people come go on the show they don't know about the question of the day? You would think they would watch at least 1 episode to to see what the show is about before going on.

  • timinspokane

The '61 Cheval Blanc is made of merlot!!! Proving that Miles is a douche bag.

  • laurieinvt

That's ok, he can't pronounce the French any better than the rest of us most of the time, either! ;D

  • Alright, a good guy who I have had the pleasure to attend his wine dinners and seminars here in DC. It is nice to see you try one of my fav Oregun's pinots, Domaine Serene which believe it or not compares itself to Romanee-Conti in some of its ads.

QOTD: It's been answered and discussed verbatim on WLTV and yes the irony is Miles says he hates Merlot though his cherished bottle is Merlot-based.

    Cheers!

  • NY Pete

anders that comment is so old school … 🙂

  • laurieinvt

    Interesting show and guest!
QOTD: As per all the other answers… Also, where there are human beings, there will be irony no matter the topic as we are a silly species who take ourselves far too seriously! I'm just sayin'…

  • slushpuppy

qotd: A delightful blend of Richard's Wild Irish Rose and Ripple.
    Smell it first. TR

  • Great show guys!!

    QOTD: Merlot

  • Eric

Hate the Bills Gary? I won't hate, still love the show. Bills fan to the end. Gary you should like the fact that Buffalo failed 4 years in a row. Interested in trying both wines at some point.

  • I'm glad that you mentioned something about “QVC-ing it.” As much as I enjoy Gourmet Library vids, I do get that sense from time to time. I understand that it's a much smaller product line and those people tasting are the ones that are most likey the ones buying. If that's the case, then by all means, you should like everything you bring in. I've just noticed that a lot of the video reviews are pleasant.

Onto the show – It's funny that you mention how wine bars are everywhere now. I thought so too until I was up in Victoria, BC about 6-8 months back. I asked a local if there were any cool wine bars and she looked at me like I was crazy.

The guest did well up until the QOTD… EVERYONE KNOWS THE QOTD IS FOR THE VAYNERNATION! Everyone that watches the show, that is.

  • KVM1985

QOTD: I've never seen this movie and I'm kind of sick of everyone talking about it.
However, I liked the guest and I admire the “self taught” path he took. Good show and thanks!

  • Michael C in MKE

Dude calls himself a Vaniac, but wasn't ready for the QOTD?

QOTD:I would have also guessed merlot, but reading the comments it's Cab Franc, Merlot. Kind of a boring question.

Good show though, I always like hearing people's stories and how they got into the business.

  • ellen caldwell

Charlie was fabulous. Absolutely down to earth. Nice to see that in his business. Gary should learn to not put the wine bottles in front of his guest's face.

  • In a word…Meh.

I used to like it when you would read some of the comments on the show.

  • Michael C in MKE

My understanding of the actual book, “Sideways.” Is that Miles doesn't drink Merlot because it reminds him of his ex-wife who loved Merlot. The symbolism in the movie would suggest that Miles holding onto a bottle of Merlot / Cab Franc (which in the movie he also pretends not to like) is him unwilling to let go of his feelings for his ex wife. He's saving the bottle for when she comes back to him. Which of course he lets go of an unceremonious fashion drinking the wine with fast food, and ultimately outgrowing his attachments. The Cheval Blanc is a projection of his lost love. His distaste for Merlot a personal sadness against the love that he lost. Not that such sentimentality would exclude someone from being a douche bag, but that hardly proves it.

The real douche bags are the people who choose the opinions of fictional characters over their own palette.

  • Excellent…looking forward to this when I get home. Cheers!

  • Green_Pea

Can I ask a question, I thought I heard him say early on he was a Vayniac. A real Vayniac is not supprised when asked to give the question of the day. Do you're homework people prior to going on. Big opportunity, don't blow it.

  • Well spoken ( or rather written) sir!

  • JimmyBill

Ok, I have a question for everyone: How do you know when you've watched to much WL TV? For me, when you take a sip of communion, whirl it, sip some air, and start nodding your head! Can't believe I did that on Sunday without even thinking! LOL!! The sad part . . . I'm the choir director and I did it in front of the whole church (hope no one noticed!).

  • StevenL

    QVC'ing It – great quote.
    Thanks for the Maranges info-
QOTD- Cheval Blanc- Merlot, Cab Franc and a small part Malbec -I think.

  • ronribbons

I think to some degree Gary intimidates his guests with his aggressive wine break downs. Not in a mean way, and not intentionally. Its like he's turned up to 11 while the guest is at 5. How do you counter creamy vanilla raspberry cola?

  • rjrausch

I expected to see more blasting b/c he wasn't ready for the QOTD but was a self proclaimed vayniac. Pretty good show. Gary dropping some knowledge, upstaging the guest. Great stuff

  • lordsauvignon

Nice, relaxed and chill guest. Seems like a cool guy.
    Great episode as usual.
QOTD: It has Merlot in it, as well has Cab franc mainly.

  • Timinspokane

I have never read the book. In fact, I didn't even know there WAS a book! It is too bad they movie/screenplay didn't tell us about the merlot connection to his ex-wife. That whole part of the movie would have made a lot more sense. It seems they missed a real chance to tie the whole story together. Thanks for those insights, Michael. I think I need to get on Amazon and find the book… Now, back to my merlot…

  • Bee_Dub

That's it!!!! I knew there was a resemblance! Well done, sir! He is Ben Stiller's 1/2 bro.

  • bromidedrag

Touché, but I have to laugh every time I read one of these comments because if they're not a Vayniac, why would they be reading the comment section prior to going on for your advice?

    It's a catch 22 😉

  • Bee_Dub

EASY: Anything named after Coach DiT-Ka wins.

  • DAveAll

Have we ever had a guest on that said “oh, I have been thinking of the QOTD all week, and have narrowed it down to this?” – nope, most are “oh, who me? ugh, do you drink wine?” Mott should wear a tshirt “don't forget the freekin QOTD, GUEST!” so they can at least reflect for a few minutes. haha. or maybe GV never invites us, cause we know what's coming…. makes me wonder.. so he has guests that don't know. hmm. (smile)
Guest: has no palate. pretty fun to watch.
QOTD: ah. self amuzing, love it. …..

  • lordsauvignon

hahaha! Thats is awesome. I better watch myself. Afraid I might do the same thing on instinct. Does this make us Vayniac extremists?

  • johnboston

Good show and guest, but gosh man – I hope it wasn't my comment from a past episode yesterday that screwed you up with the oregon speech impediment situation today. I've heard you say it fine in more recent episodes.

  • lordsauvignon

A douche bag indeed. Well put.

  • Green_Pea

    That's too funny

  • Green_Pea

Easy, you say…” but not from a bottle more like from a can”

  • Don Simpson

Equally surprising since he said he's a Vayniac so clearly has watched shows with guests!!!

  • Don Simpson

    Very interesting!!!

  • Beeper

Fleer Ultra…memories – Pinots are little pricey for me right now, hard to get excited about this episode.

  • Don Simpson

HAHAHA! That is perfect. I hope you didn't spit!

  • vpass64

You a crazy man Gary. I have been wondering about the QOTD. I would figure that the guests would be ready for that by now. Guest seems like a fun guy. What a great job though. DC probably has one of the highest percentages of alcoholics. When are you going to be in California again Mott and Gary?

  • Anonymous

    Congrats…..you won….NOTHING!

  • cowz

Another great one, like when you have guest mixes things up.

    QOTD: cab franc merlot malbec

  • Don Simpson

Seems like a nice guy. Kind of boring episode — A little fruit on the attack, hollow mid-palate, and awkward on the finish… 70 pts like the 1st wine. This episode lacked a little bit of the shoulder umph Gary was referencing.

QOTD: Already answered by everyone. Not really what you'd consider an open ended thought provoking question that stimulates conversation in the comments…

I think we've been spoiled with a lot of good episodes and Thunderous wines recently, this episode brought it back down to earth.

  • Anonymous

Indeed! Read some comments! That was BOMB!

  • Don Simpson

    Great t-shirt idea!!!

  • JimmyBill

    LOL . . . no I didn't thank goodness!!

  • Green_Pea

Obviously they wouldn?t, but I bet they do after they have gone on. 😉

  • JimmyBill

Extremists?!?!?! You know we are! I just hope it's not too contagious!

  • Anonymous

Are we sure there was/is a book? Maybe I’ll google it.

  • Merlot and Cabernet Franc.
I went out to Sideways wine country this past June. Solvang was amazing! Fantastic weather, while NJ was getting poured on. Every night doing the wine bars and walking to your hotel room.

FYI, The Hitching Post ROCKS!!! Great steaks and wine. Definately eat there if you make it out that way.

  • meh~ pazzz~ but still better than “smells like wine”

  • QOTD: Merlot of course.
