  • Carmenere = food play. It's my answer to the question, “What wine goes with mac-n-cheese”?

  • EDDIE

I LOVE THAT WRINKLE FREE T SHIRT

  • Bredsun

QOTD – I have never had a Carmenere, and don't know much about them. They are very hard to find here in Arizona where I go to school. Maybe I'll have better luck at home in California.

I feel like I need to spend a month drinking only varietals and from regions I have never tried before…time to do some research.

  • QOTD: never had one, but I'll “expand” myself and find a bottle 😉

  • Vay-ku

    Carmenere tasting —
    Chocolate, pepper…chillin'.
    Dinosaur bangs drums.

(Diablo and MontGras are good Carmenere QPRs)

  • Come on man! Grow up!

  • CharlieTN

Holy Shnikey! Gary, I want that T-shirt! Where did you get it?

  • Yeah! Marc Bolan Rocks!!!

  • Tight show. Knocked out three wines in 8 minutes but hit us with some knowledge. Very nice.

QOTD – Never had a Carmenere. We eat at a South America restaurant quite often, so I have to check if there are any on the menu.

  • Expand!!!! Big time,……

  • Why? Don't know, eh?

    Well i don't know either!!!!!

    Just do it!

  • PeteG

Been driking alot of carm in the last 6 to 9 mos. Concha y Toro “Terrunyo” has been by
far my favorite. All the dark chocolate, coffe leather aspects you'd see on a Don Melchor
    are there. Great stuff.

  • EDDIE

WHAT DID I LEARN FROM SHOW #822????? STAY AWAY FROM 20DLLS CARMENERE WINES OTHER THEN THAT,THIS SHOW WAS BORING

  • QOTD: My journey with Carmenere started today.

  • Good Luck!

  • Terrunyo ROCKS! BIG TIME! Love uor take.

  • GLrocks

    Napa Cabs blind !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Ryzner

QOTD: 1 and it was good.

  • gtoman

Drinking carmenere since 08. Your take on high end carmenere (Neyen, Purple Angel)????

  • mattgmann

salty mac with super tanic carmenere……all I can picture is the face a child makes while sucking on a lemon.

  • Guischall

    Lurker comming out…

Well, kind of boring show today… fast and dull.
But still loving to watch WLTV.

QOTD: Here in Brazil we find tons of Chilean and Argentinian wines. So I have tasted lots of Carmenére. Not a huge fan, they're usually hard wines, too tannic and too herbaceous to my palate. I'm a lot more into Malbecs from Mendoza and Sauv. Blancs from Casablanca.

  • Michael

I have had the 2006 Concha y Toro Terrunyo carmernere. An outstanding wine. I also think carmenere has a lot of Caberenet franc properties. This wine had a lot of dark berry and green pepper flavors.

  • Michael

I agree. I have had the 2006 and really liked it.

  • castello

Compared to what other show? What do you want for free everyday?

  • castello

    RIP

  • Duncan9idaho

Carm's are somthing that have really took hold here in Colorado mostly because of the awesome way restaurants pair them at Mexican food joints.

QOTD- I've tried many kinds. Best ones are the ones that are not green but have a roasted bell pepper flavor. Apaltagua is a great example!

  • qotd : had a few Gato Negro (to begin), Casillero Del Diablo, Santa Rita mostly low end stuff
but had a wonderful Casa Lapostelle once.

The Chileans are bringing big value. But I dislike the green notes in red wines.

  • MDSmitty2488

QOTD: I've had two different carmenères: Armador and In Situ. I enjoyed the Armador more, had a lot of raspberry and strawberry with a little plum. Some pepper and mustiness as it breathed more. In Situ just didn't have a whole lot going on

  • lawrenceleichtman

All the Carmenéres I have had and there were 3 were on the thunder cruise. Looking at my notes, I didn't like any of them all at one table so I tried them all side by side. While they had good aromas the greenness was not like what I get out of Cab Franc that I really like as the tannins were all too dry for me.

  • SamKw

QOTD: Let me see, carmenere, carmenere… I've had only one so far, and it was a looong time ago, way before I got into wine. Can't even remember what the bottle was exactly. It was just a bottle that happened to be there in my parents' house, and I got a sip. Wasn't terribly impressed, but granted, I didn't know anything about wine back then anyway.

Gary's take on the 1865 describes, I feel, a trend all too common in many mid-range New World wines. They over-oak the wine; they overripen their fruit; in short, they try too hard, and often the results aren't too balanced.

  • manual

QOTD : many. did a two week trip to Chile in the spring of '09 mainly for wine touring. Beautiful!

  • Well… Right! But without him not so much else!!!

  • SamKw

    1) Well, if you learned that much then you just saved yourself $20.
    2) Other viewers apparently prefer the shorter format.
    3) Quit your whining, nobody forced you to watch this show.

  • StevenL

QOTD- I try every Carmenere that hits our Liquor Authority- love that grape – maybe 15 in total. I Like the Chocalan alot.

  • QOTD: Regularly drink Carmenere and love it, as I do Cabernet Franc and northern Italy wines. Great values; wine I enjoy turning people on to because so many do not know about it and are wowed.

I wrote about Carmenere in my wine column last year, in fact. If you are interested in little background and history, visit: http://www.cwadv.com/wine_grapes.php?xnewsactio

Its good to be back. I moved from Wisconsin to Vermont and I have been busy, so I haven't commented in a while. Also, the signal for videos isn't good for the college network here. Either way, its nice to leave a comment after a long time. I hope all the vayniacs, Gary, and Mott are doing well.

QOTD: I have tons of Carmenere. I love the horseradish flavors

P.S. Whats up with this new comment box?

  • alienrelic

QOTD: I've had a half-dozen bottles or so of two different brands. Both were vegetal, and had a distinct flavor that I could not identify, but that's nothing unusual for me, unfortunately. I liked both. My problem is that it is pretty hard to find locally. If I could find other Carmeneres I would sure try them. Central Florida is not big on wines, I'm afraid, although that is starting to change.

  • Barry

Actually disovered Carmenere at the local Trader Joe's, all under 10 bones.

  • mattlox

Love Carmenere. Got turned out to it while in ARUBA. So far Concha y Toro Terrunyo Carmenere is my favorite. Get call there Dr. Passion on the wine selection today! Wish i was in Aruba today!

  • Dawn9850

QOTD: Found Carmenere a few months ago and will try one whenever I can find one here in the Memphis area. Great value wine! I love it; maybe because I am a huge Cab Franc/Chinon fan.

  • Oude Hendrik

Carmenere is one of my faves. First experience was Clos Apalta and hooked on Casa Lapostolle ever since. My QOTD, how about an April 14th episode of Titanic wines: http://www.euronet.nl/users/keesree/food.htm#Food1.

  • CharlieTN

Only had Carmenere once–it was a Casillero del Diablo for like $11, and it was kinda meh. Not bad, but a little boring. I plan to give the varietal another chance though, because I feel like I like the flavors it brings to the table.

  • Never had one – but now I desperately want to try! Thanks, Gary!

  • NY Pete

    what is going on?

  • thedreamweaver

QOTD: never but will clearly check some out at the price point.

Can you watch wltv on the iphone??? I just got one and can't watch. I will be turbo pissed if i can't. I might just drop kick the phone. Watching wltv on my phone was something I was pretty excited about. Hope a fellow vayniac can lend some assistance.

  • Zach

I am also a big believer in Carmanere. Only had two so far though.

  • guymandude

    Had plenty and love 'em.

    Thanks for the show.

first of all thank you for your help. i hope that is what a being a vanyiac is. i am learing so don’t throw darts at me. i don’t know what being podcasted means exactly and when i go to the site it just shows the square where the screen should be and i can’t watch it. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!!!!

  • carlgi

I had Carmeneres. Think you hit it right other than missing the “They thought it was Merlot” comment. Your program really hits a sweet spot when you run 12-15 minutes. Time for good comments, enough time to taste, spit and taste again.

  • panchocampo

I love how you rate and lurk industrial necrotic wines like their are good… you need to really educate the consumer with old world, real terroir wines, natural wines also… I just dont see eany shine in your eyes, the consumer is not as dumb as you think… ahhh GV, one thing, stop caring about the consummer, that is so Parker in the 90!, it is very passé, take some french cours men, i think money is not an issue, right?
