QOTD: I like them.. Often I even like the under $10 (Pillar Box Red, d'Arenberg Stump Jump Shiraz) I am in love with Hewitson Private Cellar Shiraz/Mouvedre and am waiting on some Oliverhill Jimmy's Section Shiraz to mature. I can't go steady with Aussie wine but it is tasty.

  • Good to see Gary down under. Nice lineup of wines by Nick. Hope Gary tries some Hunter Semillon.

  • jason carey

Gary, Margaret River, But Victoria, Tasmania, All the very small producers not even brought to this country.

  • winecrazy

    G'day Homey…..!!!!

Yyou always go on these great trips without me. When are you gonna call your friend form Jersey to go along with you one day…?????

I'm gonna have to get some of that S.C Pannell Grenache being the “Cigar Head” that I am. I had 4 today laying in the sun by the pool.

QOTD: I liked Schild Shiraz from a few years ago and I like my Glaetzer Amon-Ra …. Yummy!!!! Don't really drink too many Aussie wines thoough, ya know.

    Hooroo mate!!!

  • slave2thevine

QOTD: Word association for me Australian wine = imbalance. I chose this one word because for me it is difficult to encompass Australia in just one area. They have their over-done, fruit-bomb wines sure…but they also have some wonderful values (a $7 Riesling from the Clair Valley comes to mind)…and then there are the “big names” like Grange, Hundred Acre, Chris Ringland, ect. All in all it is a country that I find out of balance. They have great values in every region…but they must be tasted to be found. There are the “large” styled wines that I don't enjoy and unfortunately they dominate the market here in the USA. So it's not cost effective to “try” Australia wines for me as the majority of them I have tried are either out of my price range (What is Grange now…$600/bottle I think) or the few gems that I do find I can find other wines from the same varietal from a more consistent area or region. There is no one producer I can think of that makes wines year in and year out in a style and price range that works for me…and that is why I so rarely drink Aussie wines. However, they were a great gateway into wine for me when I started drinking…and I think that given time and some price adjustments they could gain their share of the market back.

A couple of years ago, the Aussie Dollar was only half.. so that would have been a 20 dollar wine.. Exchange rates.

  • The Winedown

SOLID episode! Love it. Love the wines, and the format. Do more!

QOTD: Over-bred. Makes me think of a once-beautiful dog breed that has been so over-bred to sell that the quality is lost. Probably not truly the case, but that's the impression I get (and a lot of my friends) here in the States.

I'm hoping one of those bottle of F.U. Shiraz I've got lying around will change my tune!

  • Good show…thanks for keeping us on the road with you!

QOTD: silly animal labels massive fruit bombs….but I have only tasted the shiraz and would like to give it another try. Beautiful country!

  • zrm

GARY down under wooooooo! Say hi to a Wallaby for me. You should always take us Vayniacs on wine travels.
QOD: High carbon footprint from shipping

  • ChrisV

Yeah the John Duval wines have been very good. The 06 Dead Arm is a cracker.

  • ChrisNY2

How come Nick didn't get a seat next to ya?

  • Igor

Just had Pirie Tasmania Pinot Noir in FL

  • RANDINTHECITY

    GARY!!!
    Love the Australian accents!
QOTD: Fake (just what came to mind)

    xo

  • liko sf

Looking forward to seeing more episodes from AUS.

QOTD: Interesting sparkling wines coming out of Australia. Especially the shiraz sparklings.

  • QOTD: What do I think of when Australian Wines: Jay and Silent Bob. Some of those wines are so over the top and in your face that you just want to ignore it, even though it can sometimes be decent (Jay). Then again, some wines are much softer and more often than not, may miss the target, but when they don't, you never forget them (Silent Bob).

  • laurieinvt

OK! I won't be cranky about the camera work- the tilted shot was funny- but can I still miss Mott?! 😉

  • guymandude

    Cool show like the format.

qotd; Why didn't Nick ask the question?

qotd; Better marketing of the styles

  • guymandude

    Not fair

  • mattgmann

I love austrailia…….but the flight sucks

  • Karen

    Hi Gary,

Great to see you in Australia and loving the shows. Hope you also get to taste some of the great wines from Coonawarra in SA during your visit.

    Cheers and enjoy!

  • DAveAll

Been there many times. Nice. Bondi beach is great. fun. Did ya see the large bats at night over the bridge? wow. awesome huge ones!
Boy, you seemed rushed (300 words a minute at times), did you fly down and back the same day? ha. ah, I see what it is – they lined this up and expected you to perform, and you'd rather be in control of the layout. got it. i agree. ya are not a trained monkey… yet. haha.
Secret to flight of 15 hours – drink water continuously, like 10 ounces per hour at least. sleep only 3 hours. then getting up to the restroom will keep you ok. :*)
QOTD: labels odd, wine solid but predictable. Redneck English I've heard and it fits well with their approach to labels. Hope global warming doesn't destroy their vines.

    thanks to your guest!

  • mattgmann
  • adrums

Enjoyable show. Made me barf (from motion-sickness) far less than Avatar did.
QOTD: A wounded but recovering fighter, readying for his rebirth, renewal and second period of glory.

  • Altboy97

QOTD – I think you hit it, Aus isn't just about the Shiraz. I got to go to the Yarra and taste some from other areas around Melbourne. All very delicate and balanced. Aus, like the US, great variety and passion for wine. But they'll tell you, they keep the best there in Aus.

  • laurieinvt

    Good, informative show! Thanks!
QOTD: Before watching today, I'd have just said big Shiraz, some very good and the rest meh grocery store stuff. But now I'm really curious about the regions, and will have to do some serious research. I'm re-thinking our next tasting group.
That was a three-sentence thesis, not two. Oh, well. 😀

  • sweet..looking forward to this…downloading now.
@adrums thanks for the warning if that comment is regarding the camerawork.

  • mattgmann

is that a security dude hiding behind the curtain? you have aussie stalkers G?

  • johnboston

qotd: shiraz. yellow tail. burnt rubber

  • larbear

QOTD: The John Duval wines were my first into to Australian wines and they are awesome. The Dead Arm (which I have boat load) are an excellant QPR. My favorite is Two hands. Sorry to say I have not found the right vintage of Yellow Tail and I'm not willing to keep giving it a chance. So there you have it Gary, I want you to tell the VA-Ner-Nation that I am not a lurker. I want to hear you say it !!

  • mattgmann

If I were judged when I was sixteen…..I'd have straight A's, drink less, girlfriend's parents liked me…. I think I could deal with that.

  • mattgmann

Are there earthquakes in Sydney at the moment? Work out your forearms dude and a la Chopper Reid, “Harden the F@ck Up!”

  • mattgmann

QOTD: meh, cheap and ugly bad, or massively overpriced and decent.

  • K is for Kate

QOTD: My thoughts about whether or not to attend an upcoming Australian wine tasting in town were something along the lines of “I'll have to see if I'm in the mood to be punched in the face with fruit that day.”

  • Nelson

A tripod would have improved the experience.

  • angelatcarlson

QOTD: Inconsistant. I haven't had that many Aussie wines yet, but so far I haven't been majorly impressed. I'm going to a Tasting this weekend in SF where there will be some smaller Aussie producers that I hope can change my palate's point of view.

  • A dumb Rhein king

That was a fun episode. Was Nick was running in place 🙂 I think that giving the cam to peeps who are on camera might be a bad idea … nerves in the hands are hard to control.

I think I would be judged better then 😀 I may have been a nuisance while sk8ing, but probably was more focused and compassionate.

QOTD: First wine I found on my own that I liked. Yes, it was a 2002 Yellow Tail, but hey after growing up on Kool-Aid and Capri Sun, my palate liked the bigger fruitier wines.

  • A dumb Rhein king

Good point. I didn't even think about that. Where's the Nick QOTD?
