Phenomenal show, so much to learn from a legend of the industry. I wish this episode was 10 hours long!

  • I too enjoyed the Pegau.

  • Dominic C.

Kachaa! Haven't watched it yet, but for a 4-pete!

  • mattgmann

    part 3!

  • zrm

    epic!

  • Just Jack

Looking forward to this next installment of the epic of the decade.

My favorite show of all time. Kermit Lynch's rise to the top is pretty amazing. Very informative icon of the wine industry and love his unique approach to wines.

Similar to him, I have turned away from New world wine and have become more enthusiastic to explore old world wines with more finesse and terroir. But I still indulge in the Cali sunshine fruit every once in awhile.

    Keep it up Gary!

I'm pouring my 2007 Pallieres Gigondas right now. But I'm not sure where he got it for $25.

  • bradleyp

What an epic 3 parter! It was great.
QOTD: Kermit, thankfully I don't buy into that lie and drink predominantly French wine. I do have a question for you. Do you have any distributors in Texas? I would really like to try some of the wines you select. Thanks for being on the show.

  • orangebottle

    top 10

  • Allan

    Top 10 too….. ; )

  • mattgmann

QOTD: My friends all think I'm fancy and over the top because of all the French wine I drink and bring to parties. They almost don't believe me when I tell them a tasty Cotes du Rhone costs $12 and their oaked out cab yeti cost them $25.

I like American wines, and I like the trend of more American producers starting to make traditionally styled wine. My wallet is quite shallow though, so the bottles that end up at my home are where my tongue and billfold meet. Right now, the largest area of that intersection is France. I do also drink quite a bit of wine from Spain, Chile and to a lesser degree Portugal and Argentina.

  • Krunch

    Great Guest, Good Show!

  • judi

again I say….best shows ever! qotd…..it's because of marketing, plus we didn't like France for a while. I have been buying French wines all along though. and so glad Kermit
chose the wines he did. I discovered Gigondas several years ago and love all that I have
    tried.

  • amsgpwarrior

I second that notion! We need Kermit Lynch wine in Texas!

  • payson07

Great show, and I just wish there was a Part 4! Very informative and a class act. Great to hear his stories and how he started his business.

QOTD: I think it's hard for people to find cheap French wine, so therefore they just believe it's expensive. I also wonder if people realize how much the US (primarily Napa) is starting to get a little out of hand in their pricing. I think the expensive French wines certainly started with the introduction of the big chateau's & are just now starting to find some real value wines in the $20-$35 range.

  • mattgmann

Kermit, BTW, I'm sipping the 07 Pallieres Gigondas as I type. Bravo. Full and complex but not overbearing. I don't think GV is fanboying this wine; to me it really is great.

  • collegefootballisnumberone

    Epic.

  • Really great show… now if only I can find some of that Gigondas in WA.

QOTD: I'm not from the era that thinks French wines are too expensive. But I think the big names in France are the only ones that people truly recognize so they make that assumption of price across the board.

  • Just Jack

It's officially the new number one in my book. If this doesn't make it onto the favorite episodes bar on the right somebody will have made a terrible call. Kermit is definitely the man. He has strongly held views without being pushy. He is unbelievably knowledgeable without being a geeky know-it-all. Passion without pretense sums him up, and from Gary's reaction it sounds like it sums up his wines as well. An exceedingly well played ball gentlemen.

QOTD: Whenever there is a disconnect between perception and reality that accrues to the detriment of a product, it is by definition a failure of marketing. If the truth would help the french wine industry and nobody knows the truth, the industry should bring in some world class marketers and remedy the situation.

  • clarkzterry

    Bradley,

Here's the link to download a PDF of our distributors – http://kermitlynch.com/pglinks.html

  • MichaelMA

So its would have been really cool if Gary had invited Kermit to join him on the laid back Friday couch for part three of the epic episode. Have not watched yet, but looking forward to it.

  • MCole

I enjoyed all of the episodes, very informative. I see you're sold out of the vintage, bummer.

QOTD: I think the perception of French wine being so expensive is of course because of the amazing first growths, that are so valuable, but more so the little knowledge about the wine themselves that most can not obtain from the labels.

  • amsgpwarrior

QOTD: I don't believe in the lie that French wine is expensive. CALI wine is expensive! OREGON wine is expensive! WASHINGTON wine is expensive! I have almost exclusively moved to buying and hoarding Cotes du Rhones, Chateauneuf's, Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Languedoc, Brunellos, Barbarescos, and Chianti's lately b/c the price points and quality are outstanding! $10-$40 buys you great wine in any of these regions and one would pay twice as much for the same quality in Cali/Oregon/Wash. With so many Domaines out there trying to make a name for themselves, the old world wines have been a super bargain. I respect Kermit's point of view of old world wine, so keep up what you do. And Gary, great show man!!!

  • Best. Show. Ever. I could watch 10 more parts.

  • pawncop

What a great series with a tremendous guest. Really enjoyed this. Thank you Mr. Lynch for your time and sharing the past.

QOTD – Perhaps it is my area (Texas) but I find the prices for French wine are usually quite a bit higher than other regions. That is not to say I haven't found a bargin or two but overall they are higher.

  • mattgmann

I'm no GV, but I'll throw out a few recommendations on cheap Frenchies for anyone looking for a good value.

2007 Chateau De Segries Lirac Cuvee Reservee ~$17

2007 Feraud-BRUNEL RASTEAU COTES DU RHONE VILLAGES ~$20

2008 Chateau Pesquie cuvee des terrasses cotes du ventoux ~$15

Domaine du Pegau Plan Pegau lot 2006 ~$15

These are my favorites from France under $20 so far this year, and basically in that order. I obviously have a taste for rhones, but I think these are all wines that anyone would enjoy (especially for the price).

  • mattgmann

GV, if you're looking for viewers choice wines, the Lirac is hard to beat.

  • DCaragher

GV – Such a great show! Kermit is so friggin' interesting! Oddly enough, he might have to be added to my list of peeps that I'd like to sit down and spend a day with (along with Vonnegut, Johnny Depp, George Clinton, Axl Rose, John Joseph, and several others!)!

QOTD: I think it is all Bordeaux's fault! I think Bordeaux is the dominating thought in the US when you say “French Wine.” We just need to explore more, myself included!

    PEEP CORK'D!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • YES! TGIF

  • waynoooo daaaaa winoooo

YEEEEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAW, Part Trois in daaaa HOOOOUUUUSE!!!!!!!!

  • Allan

The Ben Hur of wine shows……

And like Ben Hur this was & is a classic.

Qotd: I dunno, i don't see it that way.

  • Lb_in_KS

    How fun was that!
qotd…maybe we feel shipping the juice over make for a costly bottle. Personally, I don't look at it that way, and Cali should take note because folks are gonna start to figure out they are overpriced. just my opinion, I could be wrong.
    Great 3 parter.

  • Richie

QOTD: I think Kermit answered the question himself.
    Great epic episode.

  • It's also good fun to search around for Vin De Pays that come from the same neighborhoods as the big appellations…have had a few chien that way, but more often been happily impressed. Even easier when you know a trustworthy importer>

  • SECONDED!

  • orangebottle

Thank you so much for the great conversation. it was informative and laidback.
Mr. Lynch rocks. He personify class.
QOTD: I hope we want to let the French think the price is high so they?ll keep the price in check. Otherwise we wouldn?t buy them. maybe?

  • MDenice82

I'm taking a trip to Berkeley and bringing my friends with me! Awesome show…

  • mattgmann

I always keep an eye out for interesting Vin De Pays. I've had some serious wins, but the last few I gambled on weren't great. Good recommendation.

  • A dumb Rhein king

GV the KL fan boy 😉

I can't believe anyone would be so upset as to throw somebody out of their restaurant for having a reasonable complaint. Especially in this economy and in that über competitive sector. The owner must have a grip load of money to just throw out the door today and all of the future times that you and your colleagues won't go there.

What an awesome week of WLTV. Mr. V, I'm glad you didn't bet your show in the blind tasting and have to stop taping before this!

QOTD: Around here I normally see very few ranges of French wine. Maybe the lower end 8-12$ bottles and then the 60-80$ bottles. It's hard to make that kind of a leap unless I would like to stretch a bottle for two months 🙂 I see a larger range of California wines.

  • Frank leFevre

Kernit Lynch is a tottally charming man. I have been watching WL since the beginning and this is by far my favorite interview. I just wish it was easier to find his wines here in South Carolina. Thanks Gary- great job.

  • jayhitek

Crap. I watched Part 3 first.
    Fascinating.
QOTD: Hmmmm good question. No comment.

  • lawschooldrunk

Gary, if I come on the show, I can talk enough for 4 episodes!

QOTD: I do not know. Some reputations take time to change.

  • drt999

QOTD — let's face it, compared to most soda and beer in the grocery store, wine is generally (although not always) more expensive. The rest is just misperception. Perhaps the question is, is French wine of X quality more expensive than American wine of the same quality, and in general, I would have to say that for Bordeaux and esp. Burgundy, generally yes, and in other regions generally no.

  • Maurice O Mahony

Tremendous. I really loved this 3 part. Absolutely tremendous. The only negative is that I live in Ireland and I cant get to try his wines. I hope to some day. I will watch this episode again many times. Makes me smile and inspires me.

Thanks so much for the best Wine Library TV episode ever. Absolutely perfect.

QOTD : As I'm in Ireland and we import a lot of French wine, we dont think French wine is expensive. Of course, some of it is extremely expensive but we get to try lots of brilliant French wine at reasonable prices.

GV – you were on fire with your wine analysis (as always) – KL looked impressed.

    Kermit Lynch. Gary Vaynerchuk. Legends.

  • liko sf

    Awesome three part episode!!

QOTD: I agree with Kermit, I believe its because of an old perception that French wines are expensive.

  • wekemas

    I want some Pallieres Gigondas and I want it right now. {sigh}

As for the QOTD, perhaps I am naive but I haven't believed or thought that French wines were any more expensive than wines from anywhere else. It's always been more of a bottle by bottle, or vintage by vintage thing from my perspective, French or otherwise.

Great series of shows. Enjoyed every minute.

  • pbarr

G- Thanks for the great 3 part show. It was really interesting to hear from such a legend that has so much experience.

  • chateauplonk

What a treat of a show! Seeing a Kermit Lynch sticker on the back of a bottle is always a reassurance for me.
QOTD: I think French wines have a reputation for being expensive because to the casual wine consumer the only French wines they're much aware of are the Doms, Moutons ect. which are quite expensive for middle class wine drinkers.

  • john

QOTD – For me the perception comes from the press (Wine Spectator ) that showcases the first growths. So when the press and WS hype the French wines (and rightfully so with a 100 pt Cheval) their associated price tag is also showcased and that is what our (the general public) prececption of how much great French wine will cost. If you sum up the cost for all the first growths and then divide, I would say that that price is what the general public associates with top notch French wine. Compare that price with some of top California wines and that is your preception problem. People then think a middle of the road California wine cost 50 bucks so a middle of the road French wine will probably cost 85 buck, and so on down the ladder. Not fair but I think that is how most of the people I know look at it. – My two cents

P.S. GV way to come back strong with you WLTV content.

  • zrm

I love the epic shows Gary! awesome guest!

QOD: the french rep? People think france is expensive and snooty. France is Paris to the american consumer. And its a false notion. I love having French wine more than any other country. Even the cheap Boujoules!
