This guest is probably okay but Jesus…does he like talking about himself…and, I’m sorry mate, your stories are not the most interesting. GV pretends to be interested but it’s pretty obvious that he’s as bored as hell. A rare dud

    Join da Club !!! :O)

  • karrens

I went through them all, and for reference there have been 65 shows so far in 2010, and 26 (40%) of them have had guests.

  • Ya I think it’s time miss “goofy”‘ put the glass down..

  • johnfarrin

    First?

  • karrens

Really not coming through on that “fewer guests” promise.

  • waynoooo daaaaa winoooo

    YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAW!!!!!!!!!

  • winecrazy

    Yo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Just Jack

Hmmm. This guest was certainly a bit of a change up. I mean, you definitely threw us a curve ball here.

  • waynoooo daaaaa winoooo

    Yes You Are !!!! :O)

not like it matters but… TOOOOOOOPPPPPPPP TEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEENNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!!

  • John_Kenneth_J

qotd: best one I had recently was Chateau Figeac Saint Emilion Grand Cru Classe.

I imagine with WLTV gaining more and more notoriety it's probably easier to get guests on the show in addition to more and more people just plain trying to be guests on the show. Cuz it sure seems like at this pace you're really gonna obliterate the record, or should I say “crush it” when it comes to having the most guests on in one year by FAR.

  • Hey, just in time….

  • duuude…great move from the choir to the strings. We only had an older later on the organ, so I had to work the altar. with that decision and your other stories, I'd say the big guy has been on your side.
Very cool so far…I wish I had a glass of wine to kick back with this.
    Greg Allman too? Holy Cow.

  • mattgmann

nice to see a burgundy show after all the recent US pinot action.

  • mattgmann

But really, take this shit to the couch!

  • aha…so it is a continuing religious experience…

  • Just Jack

So here's the deal. I tune in to see the new show. Watch 2 or 3 minutes and figure this show is worth a couple of not so funny baseball references and that's all. I almost didn't even watch the rest of it. My instincts are usually pretty good but the old first impression definitely let me down in this case. This guy is just a great guest. He doesn't really bring a ton of wine knowledge but he is entertaining and down to earth. He is really approachable and is obviously comfortable in his own skin. Well played to bring him in GV. It was a little bit of a bone roll but it worked out.

  • unreal storytelling…charmed life…and the best part is he realizes how far out and serendipitous it is.

  • Holy cow…did you not watch the episode just because there was another guest. I sure hope not.

  • jylferris

On the screen you can see the difference of those two wines by the color. The first was unusually light.

  • Allan

    Top 13? Lucky 13? ; )

  • Allan

    This looks like a stoner-ep!

    More later…….. YEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWW too!

  • cellarrat5

There are a lot of people out there that do that. Its Garys show, its not WLTV with eve-ry-one else (except maybe in 2010, the year of the guest, but I say bring it on!!).

qotd: Best Bordeaux under 70 bones????? Will have an answer for Ya after I
start drinkin' some of me 2005 stockpile……….

  • Funny stories about a mans life. Lot less story about wine, but thats OK. Maybe this show should have been taped on the couch …
QOTD: best bordeaux under 170 bones!!!! Haven't had that many (under 170 :D) Kidding. I say Chateaux Fleur-Petrus at the moment

  • Thanks much, very fun.
QOTD: the budget has restricted advanced forays into Bordeaux, so I'm not going to have much to contribute. I'm hoping some of the less expensive, less well known 2005s on that I picked up on recommendation, will be showing well in the coming years.

  • Smahlatz

Hmm – best I've had was a 1970 Montrose – probably shouldn't be under that price, but hunted it down as a birthday wine, and was spectacularly surprised with a cheeky auction bid on a case.

  • cellarrat5

I completely forgot Fastball existed! I had a huge 90's alternative rock phase at one point (for the most part I am glad I am over it). I must admit, at first I was asking myself who this guy is and what he was smoking before they taped the show. But when he started telling the rags to riches story of the year I began to take interest. Very approachable, and I do not believe I have seen Gary laugh as much or have as much fun with most guests as he did with Miles. Great and somewhat surprising show.

QOTD: I had an amazing Burgundy Pinot at an equally amazing restaurant on the Champs-Élysées last time I was in Paris. Pricey but face melting, cannot remember the name for the life of me.

  • mschmidt64

I almost stopped watching about 5 minutes because I could see from the screen there would be no tasting until the final 10 minutes, but this guy was really interesting. A refreshing break from the sometimes too wine-nerdy episodes. I went right to Itunes and recognized one of their two hit songs.

Nothing on the QOTD…love Burgundy but couldn't name one off the top of my head.

  • mattgmann

    QOTD: no clue.

  • njc2o

    man what a burnout

  • Miles, thanks for spending the time and sharing the stories. I have been a big fan since '98 and ironically was listening to “Keep your wig on” yesterday. Keep 'em coming.

QOTD – have to think a little on that, there are so many, which is good, but also creates the challenge.

  • ChicagoMatt

GREAT show! Outstanding stories. Very entertaining.

For my money, Chateau Brane-Cantenac from Margaux is where it's at.

  • karrens

I watched some of it, and I found it pretty tedious. The occasional guest is a great way to break up the usual WLTV format from time to time. It's always great to see Sasha make an appearance. Or the Kermit Lynch episodes, for example, were great, because the guy is fascinating, relevant, and knows as much about wine (or at least about his niche of the wine world) as anyone on the planet. I enjoyed the past couple of episodes with Michael Twelftree for the same reason. Miles, from some band I've never heard of, not so much; I'm sure he's a nice guy, but he's just not what I come to WLTV looking for.

The guest episodes generally fall into one of four categories; the people who really bring something to the table (Jancis Robinson, Kermit Lynch, so on), minor celebrities, vineyard owners or representatives, and the random assortment we can call “everyone else”. All of these have their place, and it's a fair point that those of us who don't care for certain episodes aren't owed anything, and can just not watch them. That said, ten out of the past twelve episodes have had guests. I'm not sure that that's an increase from the number of guests there were last year (to date), but I am pretty sure it's not a decrease, and that's what we were told we could expect to see in 2010.

I've been watching since episode 99, and I keep coming back for one reason; Gary is one of the most affable, accessible, and knowledgeable personalities in the wine world, and I think he's providing a great service (and, again, to be fair, a free one). It would definitely get stale if the same formula was followed without change, but he's repeatedly shown he can keep it fresh: different pairing episodes, episodes focused on emerging or unknown varietals, episodes focusing on different drinks, episodes tied to the season, and so on.

The episodes with guests, or at least this sort of guest, just always feel to me to diverge too far from what works, and at its best works spectacularly, about WLTV. If the same number of guests we've seen in the past couple of weeks had been stretched out over a couple of months, I might have been occasionally irked by it but I wouldn't have bothered to comment on it. But when we see a nearly relentless string of guests I do find myself getting bored with it. There. I've said my peace.

  • waynoooo daaaaa winoooo

Oh! THAT song! I don't even listen to commercial rock radio, MTV, or any of stuff, and that song is everywhere – work, shops, public places, etc. Congrats, and good job, Miles! I'd had my punk/rock parallel experience, while I worked (6 years) at a great Jazz Club/ Ristorante, and all the brushes w/ fame, and friends made in wine, woman, and song, recording, touring, etc. are truly great memories.

QotD – That is a really great question, that just rolled off your tongue, like your were right on top of it! And there's hundreds, if not thoudsands of good answers that people will offer. So I have to go off the top of my head…
First thing to do to drive cost down in Bordeaux, is prepare to accept an unheralded, or off vintage. All they do then, typically, is cut down percentages (depending on Satellite/Appelation) of the late ripening Cab. Sauv. SO WHAT. The Merlot brings softness, and pushes the fruit ot the front, in an accessible profile. And I LOVE Cab Franc, (an earlier ripener). A special classic that I bought earlier this year is ALTER EGO of Chateau Palmer. Unlike many 2nd labels, it is truly a limited release wine (I think usually around only 4000 cases. That's small, special, and a famous, classified growth.
Another end is ultra small production Garagiste wines, like those of Jean luc Thunevin. These guys make really great small Chateaux (like his Clos Badon, which I love), and his bombastic, modern style, the 2nd label of Ch. Valandraud, “Virginie de Valandraud”. I'd better stop there.
Alter Ego sold for $60 in Ohio. I paid half that in Fl!
Clos Badon swings from 40 – to even 80, in some years!!!
Virginie de Valandraud I've got @ $50. In Ohio, '01 was $99. Don't buy this stuff in a control state , if you can help it. Good Luck, and continued success, health, and happiness. Rock on.

What's with all the whining on this board lately?

  • mattgmann

I think it's like a davinci code thing. If we can decode the puzzle we'll find some treasure.

  • murso

And get to know who the owners and winemakers of Bordeaux are. M. Rolland, Thienpont, Derenencourt, Magrez, Lurton, Dubordieu, Moueix, etc. They've all got systems, methods, and protocols which lead directly to their results, which you may find you like, or find that they need to be tweeked to your personal taste.

  • drt999

Wow, that's a tough QOTD — I don't know what's best, but I'd likely go for Fourtet or Talbot
