This guest is probably okay but Jesus…does he like talking about himself…and, I’m sorry mate, your stories are not the most interesting. GV pretends to be interested but it’s pretty obvious that he’s as bored as hell. A rare dud

Miles is correct in saying the songs are more famous than the band. I had no idea the name of the band that sang “The Way” and ” Out Of My Head” but have heard the songs countless times and thoroughly enjoyed them. Fun Epp to watch, I actually didn't care if you reviewed any wine tonight or not. Great stories.

    QOTD: I like the 2003 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou

  • mattgmann

Les Secrets De Cardinale 2006 was good. Gary had it on the show so I tracked it down. Big win.

  • QoTD: '05 Lascombes: $50.

  • guymandude

They drank up the wine and they got to talking, they now had more important things to say…

    How Prophetic .

    G might be a closet-rocker……… :O)

GV – I like the show and your guest. He has some good stories and is a real laid back kind of guy.

QOTD – By best Bordeaux under $70, since he wasn't specific I am going to go with a Sauternes and say my favorite, Doisy Vedrines (loved it long before Gary every mentioned it on WLTV or his book came out). For the reds I'll go with a value play and say the 2005 Reignac.

Miles story was so entertaining and funny I had to comment and throw my support his way. I couldn't agree more about the Francophile thing, as Kermit said they have mastered all styles and if you think about it, where else can you find red wines with finesse and complexity and real balance.Three Bordeauxs that have stood out from others I've tried are for me, the 04 Leoville Barton for its seemless balance and lack of fake winemaking. The Haut Bailly and Larcis Ducasse which really showed well in a tasting of 05s I was at. None of these would be under $70 in the top vintages but worth exploring in the less hyped years. Cheers and keep on rocking.

  • I loved this episode, Gary. The stories were amazing and I could tell you were into them too. You usually spend a lot more time talking, hah!

everybody is a closet rocker whether they admit it or not 🙂

So I'm going to a cinco (err…ocho) de mayo party tomorrow. Since I don't know of any mexican wines, anyone have any rec's on something good to take? Thought maybe I'd make some sangria. I know that's not mexican either…..but dammit, I don't feel like drinking stinky mexican beer.

  • I'm not sure if it's because I'm paying for the shipping, but I would say that every time I've purchased a bordeaux, or especially a red burgundy, I've ended up feeling completely ripped off. While, admittedly, I almost never spend more than $40 a bottle (and I'm sure there's great juice in that $100+ range), every bottle that I've bought in that 40 range has left me feeling like I could've got a much better wine for the price from anywhere else in the world.

  • mattgmann

I'm sorta there with you charles. I like bordeaux a lot, but I generally steer clear because the QPR isn't great, at least not for my taste. I wish I could remember the name, but the local shop I frequent carries an inexpensive st. emilion that's been pretty good for ~$25

  • Brian

Absolutely. Awesome guest. More down to earth musicians, please.

  • A good choice of a guest. I'm a lurker, usually, but I break silence to say I met Miles at a splendid wine bar in Austin called Vino Vino. He has been known to play there, a little under the radar, when not on tour. He's generous: invites musicians from the audience to play or accompany him; I'm the president of a small record label, and he sympathetically shared his wisdom and time.

The venue suits his francophilic bent: I think there's one California wine for sale there (Conn Valley Prologue?); the wines by the glass are fascinating, diverse, GV-esque selections. Passion, up and down the list, and on the stage, too.

QOTD: Château de Barbe Blanche, 1998. Inexpensive and elegant, great with food.

  • WineWoman

Miles and Pinot Noir–didn't they already make that movie?

QOTD: Les Secrets de Cardinale. Chateau le Gay. Also loved the 2000 Mayne Sansac that I paid 6 or 7 bones for.

  • Pat__B

I get to remembering we had a lot more [Chateau Le Gay 2006] then. We would run in circles everyday, running around half blind for that stuff. But, everybody knows there ain't nothing new about money woes and I complain very little because [Chateau Laforge 2006] is better than we ever could have wished it to before.

  • johnfarrin

Was no.1 today. Yay me. then did my laundry, yuk, made tomorrow's lunch dessert and then actually got to watch. GV, you're getting better and better. Watch out Charlie Rose!

QOTD: So far, the best under $70.00 Bordeaux that I

  • johnfarrin

QOTD: continuing, have had is the 2003 Chasse Spleen ($30.00). I thought it was spectacular. I have 3 magnums of the 2005 that I'm praying are as good.

  • ryanl

Outstanding show Miles and GV! I love a great story and story-teller.

  • agentorange

Duder, this was awesome. Good times. Good stories.

I say you put Miles and Kermit in a limo and head down to Maynard's Vineyard in Arizona for a taste. How fun would that be?

    I'll be happy to mediate.

    Cheers!

He means it’s friday and they should be on the laid back friday couch.

  • larbear

I think it might be worth while to review the past episodes of WLT and cite the jewels of wisdom I have picked up. Todays jewel is “Stories are what wine is all about”
    GV-episode 860.

QOTD – I do not have a favorite color, food, wine, person, place or thing. I have felt this way since grade school. I love the thing that separates them from their peer.

  • QOTD;Wish I had an answer, I'd feel all warm and nerdy, Erin Glenn Bordeaux blend.

  • daveholland

Vintage! and very honest, authentic, entertaining and meaningful.
    Real life, right there!

  • liko sf

Perfect for a Friday evening. Very entertaining show. Great stories.

  • DAveAll

Never heard of Fastball, but this guy is pretty cool, like him. Great stories. He's lived life. Like my new icon? oh, sorry, this is about the show. wow, he is an interesting guy. I was surprised! and impressed. His review of the 3 years was incredible. priceless. it's so true.

    oh, ok review on wines.

  • Mike in C-town

Cool episode. Miles is a cool guy. Great stories. Can't phantom why we are only at 78 comments. You had me at G. Chambertin.

I'd also like to add my “pat on the back” to GV for the VAST improvement in interviews.

QOTD: I'm no help on the bordeaux. Haven't opened any of mine yet….those that I've tried have been more right bank. I'm more a cab guy than M-low.

  • Cool_Dave

    Miles, your a cool guest.
Gary, the shows just keep getting better my man!!!
QOTD – Chateau Puygueraud 2003. Drank in March. AWESOME!! $ 25.00 easy 90 points or better.
I have a very cool 2005 Chateau Haut Segottes Cabernet Franc based Bordeaux with some Merlot In the blend and that is it. Neal Rosenthal import. Can't wait to pop it. $ 37.00

What a great show and guest! Loved the Fastball tunes before the show and now will definitely revisit. Very cool.

QOTD: just about anything from Smith-Haut-Lafitte.

  • Cool_Dave

    Those are my favorites!!
    Maybe we could compromise.

  • jimchem

Sorry Gary, You like the interviews but I come here for wine talk.

  • jparadise

As soon as I heard the song I was like ohhhhh those guys. Not sure I ever knew their name (sorry miles) but some really great radio tunes for sure.

Good show GV while I live for the uber geeky episodes a nice chat with a really interesting dude is a great play on a friday.

  • Love it. SAW FASTBALL IN NASHVILLE years ago. Enjoyed it!

  • Oh Hell Yeah, cool episode. ( the magneto reference made me laugh so hard )

QOTD: Chateau de Parenchére Bordeaux 2006 is awesome…. probably not THE best, but definitely woth checking it out, and its price is around $30 USD.

  • Randall

You're not THE Dave Holland. Signed, Jack deJohnette. 😉

    COUGH–C-COUGH–CO'douche'UGH–COUGH!!

  • The New King of Pape

This episode could have been a train wreck.
But Miles turns out to be a really cool guy.
    Great episode.
I think the Chez Panisse angle saved it for me.
It is funny how interesting people wind up doing interesting things and meeting other interesting people.
One more reason to get out of your house.

  • Jin

great stories, one of my all-time favorite songs. remember the 1st day i heard it on the radio, “a local band from Austin”, and thinking this will be a song that we'll be listening to for years. 1997 St Emilion Chateau Belair, like 45 euros (~$55) from the vineyard. Was skeptical cause '97 wasn't the best year for Bordeaux, but must've peaked in 2007 when we got it.

  • Great show! Thank you for the laughs and stories.
