Really enjoyable show. I can’t make my mind up about this one. On the one hand GV has to try the second wine seven times (!) in order to justify not panning it. Surely he’d understand what was going on with his usual 2 sips. On the other hand he is very convincing about why it appeals to his (unusual) palette. I’ve got a hunch that it probably sucks and I’m definitely not rushing out to buy it. I doubt if he ever drunk it again after this show.

  • Hm! I think Gary said you can still like a wine despite its defects and he disclosed them. So I see nothing wrong. Gary’s scoring the wines following his own palate, not different from what all the other critics do. If Parker gives a 95 to an alcoholic, goopie, over-oaked mess because he loves it he’s entitled to it. You just need to know the critic.

    Or am I wrong? :O

He’s talking about a wine that was also rated very high by RP I think and it turned out to be different crap or different batches or somesuch. A little help here Julius.

    ha ha ha

    spot on Mr.C

  • not always 🙂

  • Anonymous

    Nobody calls me Mr.
    Thanks.

  • woo-hoo!! !st!

  • hey, hey, hey 🙂

  • Looks great!

  • I can't think of a single most debated wine, but been debating how quickly if at all the Redskins can produce a playoff team….that's the hot topic outside of our new son dominating the room

  • Just Jack

    This should be good

  • castello

    top ten!

  • Allan

    Top 10 tooooo!

  • looks to be a very promising show!

  • I'm not sure about most debated, but at the Pittsburgh Wine Festival this weekend, my mom hated Cloudy Bay. I remain a loyal fan. Those NZ SB's get everyone riled up!

  • tflangan

Lite Sarah. Who da thunk it?

  • WineKnurd

Terrible job Gary! Les Cretes disjointed minerality and hollow mid palate but still 88+? Do you judge on a 12 point scale?

  • drt999

    1) Liracs are almost always fun! Wish I had gotten in on that one.
    2) Syrahs should not be light! That would confuse many. I didn't have this, but it sounds more south-east European than any Syrah

QOTD — to each their own! Never been in a 'big wine fight' (other than Vayniac Cab, of course)

  • cwpeters

QOTD: Doooooker pick one. Blue Eyed Boy was really interesting at the last party.

  • paulkochevar

No Cinderalla Wine shipping here in MN! 🙁 But going to have to search out some Lirac sooner than later. Good stuff Gary…thanks!

  • Good show, minus the fact that I can't get in on the action…

    Really good question.

QOTD: So far, it's been any Savennieres. I LOVE em'… everyone else in my group, not so hot on them.

  • Julius

Because the grape (Syrah) wasn't permitted for the DOC, the wine had to be designated as a VDP and as such the vintage was not permitted on the label, hence the lot #. Since that time, Syrah has become allowable and new vintages will be DOC and show vintage.

Now that was a kick-ass episode. Thoroughly enjoyed it. I agree with you on the Les Cretes, BTW. Very light, a bit of a hollow mid-palate, but the flavors are intriguing. I would go 87-88 points, personally. Not a $50 wine, but for the $20 pro-rated price in the Lede 3-pack, it is very interesting and different. To me, it actually acts more like a white wine than a red. Better by itself or pairing with fish or lightly-grilled chicken, not the heavy-hitter meals you might serve with an Aussie Shiraz.

QOTD – My wife and I have very similar palates, but my mom dissed a great tawny port I served to her one time at Thanksgiving. She was hugely disappointed. I made it up to her by popping a Sauternes. Sometimes you gotta pull out the big guns to smooth things over.

  • DanLacher

Need to get some of the 2005 Gran Elias Mora Toro to try out.

QOTD: The one that we were drinking when the decanter was smashed into the side of a chair and shattered… don't recall the wine, just the laughter.

  • rwino

Good show, do you think the Les Cretes will come together with some cellar time? Had the KL Racines last night, it to was drinking a bit disjointed, going thru a phase I expect. QOD: 2007 Ridge Zins, seems to be a lot of bottle variation. Had one that was pink in color.

  • vintotintoiowa

great show and thanks for explaining why I don't like Les Cretes although I had my reasons.
RE: GEM, which I love, you first described it as not fake. At the end, you called it a little too fake. Which one is it.

    thanks again,

  • Julius

I expected you to like this wine. After all, you loved the 2006 Matassa Blanc, which the wine staff had trouble getting past their nose.

  • winecrazy

Good energy Homey…. did you read my last comment form yesterday?

I do have two of those Les Cretes because I bought (3) 3-packs and I was wondering how I would return the two since it wasn't really for me. Not bad. It just wasn't grabbing me like a syrah does. Also, what is the ALC. on that wine? I couldn't find it on the label.

So if I returned it…..what is the return price since it was bought in the 3 pack? And no, I'm not going to take off the little green label with a razor and try and get $49 a bottle on the return price…..although my criminal mind thought about it….but I can't do that to my homeboy….lol So anyway so how much??

QOTD: I have no controversy about wine. I just enjoy it…….I don't talk about it or debate it.

  • Julius

    QOTD: 2005 Sierra Car Crash

  • Cubatobaco (Ray)

Glad to see the new episode is up!

Now if I could just get home to watch it….lol.

  • Allan

    BA-DAWWWW!

Great to have you back G… with a smokin' show!!!!

I must say i would like to taste that controversial bottle……. I love minerallity!
Lirac always brings thunder in my home….. (Ok not all the time, but almost)
Elias Mora, i dunno….. maybe big, but sometimes when you're in the right mood, the big ones can be thrilling, but in the long run, gets boring to me…..
Kick-ass show G, love when your energy it UUUUUUUUUUUUPPP HERE!!!
And i absolutely love when you just tell it like you see it.
Wine Dictator can suck ass, you rock! (I don't trust the dictator)…………! ; )

Qotd: this will be filed under “not cool”, but, i was involved in a white wine blind-tasting not so long ago (last weekend). Where i was really into the first wine, which was really piney, and basil-like on the nose. I was really diggin' it, until i found out it was a Retsina from Greece. And that made me mad, and i was off….. argumenting 'bout it.
Retsina is usually boring as heck, slightly sweet. Retsina is the wine worlds answer to Paris Hilton, ya know where i'm goin wit dis???
That's what happens when you go blind! ; )

    Cheers to you mr. Vay-ner-chuk!

  • RANDINTHECITY

    Me too Ray! LOL

  • jason carey

The reason on the Italian wine that it has a lot number is that since it is a non DOCG grape. it has to be called Vino de Tavola.. the lot number is a sneaky way of putting the vintage on the bottle, even though the vintage is outlawed on that classification..

  • Good point Julius

  • Great show today! Lovin' the energy!

QOTD: Had 2 that come to mind right away, both EXTREMELY different. First, the 06 Joly Savennieres-Coulee de Serrant. My wine of the year so far, extremely nuanced and complex. My girlfriend thought it was oxidized trash. Gotta love those funky flavors. Second, gotta put up your 'Dooks! The 07 Mollydooker Blue Eyed Boy. Brought to a blind tasting of Australian wines. Was literally EVERYONE'S wine of the night, to me, it was undrinkable. A flabby ball of glycerine alchohol and fruit. Yuck.

  • Allan

    HA!

“Why don't you people learn to drive…..huh, you know you just might stay alive….”

  • castello

If you went blind with Paris(brown bag her)you'd prolly like it too!

  • Allan

Your absolutely right on this one castello!

  • Allan

Hello, ready for some Stewie action?

    (I dunno what i'm doin')

  • RANDINTHECITY

    Alan?
    Umm..no..u dont .
    *sigh*

  • Allan

Have only had Boxer, i was dissapointed as well. I second that Yuck.

  • philoxera

wher'd Mr Vaynershirt go in changing in the middle of the episode…whats goin on? This some sort of fashion show???….Stick to wines yea bozo

  • castello

    Wow! Great show!
QOTD: My ongoing wine fued with 2 of my friends. One is a Cab/Merlot guy and one a Petite Sirah/Zin guy. They both have their favorite wines for about 10 to 15 bones. I agree they are fairly delicious and well made. If I tell them to try something new they say why should I buy that when I can get 2 or three bottles of their favorites for the same price.
Luckily GV has taught me to explore and expand. Forever gratefull.

  • Allan

Ok, ok, he should have like a shirt with a big V on it, like Superman's S. So when he really needs to get those tasting notes right, he makes that Vaynerchuk/Superman FLASH change?

  • Allan

    ; )

  • Allan

I know what your talking about, my friends are just like that too.

    GV is awesome.

Whatever happend to Mott in this comment section???

  • jest8

Had to post my comments on the Cindy blog, as this was such a Cindy show.

  • Allan

Any slim chance on a show on Rheingau Riesling in the not so distant future G?

  • barrethudson

Another good show! Guests are cool but sometimes it's nice to just have GV put it down solo. Just had to post to say that I'm loving that T-shirt, but hot chocolate? really? You know that apple cider is the king of warm breakfast drinks!
QOTD: None of my friends are into wine enough to debate it with me and my girlfriends palate tends to follow mine lately so not much controversy around here.
