I trust you Gary. Can’t wait till then!

  • XpensiveWino

    First? That's a first!

  • castello

    top two!

  • Brian Social

Top 10! Just wondering (and I'm not the first to voice this thought): shouldn't Cap'n Crunch be an Admiral by now? All those years without a promotion.. I'd be pissed off.

  • njc2o

    fourth?

  • Randall

I just think the actual ease w/ which GV conducted himself (e.g. NOT interrupting and making his guest feel at home) was completely unprecedented in the history of WLTV! I loved the KL shows and quite a few other recent ints., but this one takes the cake, as it were. BTW I listen to Terry Gross all the time, and may have transposed that interview from another radio show here in Sacramental, as I can’t find it in NPR’s extremely uswer-unfriendly archives… I think it’s on ‘Insight’ w/Jeffrey Callison at capradio.com Anyway, I hope this is it.

  • WOW!!! can't wait to watch this one!!!

  • This episode was just ok, for me. There was something about it that just didn't sit right.

  • Good show. Chaim Gur-Arieh looks a bit like Lee Van Cleef, aye?

  • Neil

    Top 10?

Gary I will be honest here. I am starting to get tired of all the guests. This guy was pretty nice seemed like he makes a great wine fo sho. I used to be a big guest guy but its wearing on me.

    BTW love the Petite Sirah
QOD:I buy wine by price point, region, then have i had it before (if its a no thats good i like trying new stuff)

  • drt999

RE: Rose — I've been pushing it for 10 years, and so have many many others, and it still hasn't really caught on.

QOTD — variety first, generally location second and brand third

  • QOTD: I am much more experimental due to Gary's influence of trying new wine. I'm enjoying the experience and tasting some great wine.

Curious on two things: Seems like there was a fair amount of wine already consumed from these bottles which is unique to the show…I think.

Also, you had a brief phase where you were diggin' the extra oak. Lasted about a couple weeks but now it seems you've gone back to the old Gary. Am I wrong?

    Enjoyed the show!

  • castello

I buy whatever Gary tells me to buy. What a sucker I am. 🙂

  • jstolpe

    Nice guy!
QOTD i think i am super experimental but i always come home with rhone wines from the store. i guess i am experimental with the producers within the rhone valley.

  • Bryson

Great video! I've been out to the CG Di Arie Vineyard, they are super nice over there! I'm very experimental when it comes to wines. I'm kind of a ratings whore though.

  • OMG! GV This was your best interview EVER!!!! PS I LOVE YOU!!! Especially this one!! Have bought the '05 and it was fabulous!!!!

QOTD: I am an experimentor and love to try something new everytime I shop!! Its because of GV that I have branched out!!!

  • This is my favorite episode of all time. Chaim was great and you can tell how happy he was when Gary picked out the flavors that he thought were in the wines.

QOTD: I'm still new to the game so I don't have preconceived notions of brand/locations and I'm willing to try things.

  • zrm

I think the Oak fetish was with white wines, chard specifically

Big K is a busy man with 2 kids now.

  • binarycache

Your interviewing skills have improved ten fold! Great show!

    QOTD: New and still experimenting!

  • jenna35

Very nice to see a guest so excited about his wine. It shows that he takes great pride into what he is making. He glue to you as you were describing the wines.

QOTD:currently I look for QPR wines that bring the thunder!

  • BryMcK

Eating Cap't Crunch while watching. Managed to find some down here in NZ. Enjoyment all round.

  • Purplejuicebruce

Great show again, look forward to visiting your winery this fall Got to try the Petite Sirah!
QOTD I taste over 1000 wines a year at every event and winery I can get to that is how I chose my wines.

  • RANDINTHECITY

    GARY!!!
    CG!!

    He's a Flavor man! Flava-Flav! LOLOLOL
Awesome..who knew you could go into business selling flavors?
LOVE Capt. Crunch…why cdnt he sneak that flavor into wine?! 😉

QOTD: More experimental lately..but I buy what I like mixed together with what Im hoping I will like!

    Great guest…great episode…
    Thank you!!

  • Cubatobaco (Ray)

Now I'm walking around the house yelling, Flaaavvaaa Flaaaaaav!!!! LOL!!!

Going to watch the episode in about 40 mins. I've got a bottle of 06 Ridge Lytton Springs airing.

  • jimchem

QOTD: I buy wine as an experiment. I seldom buy the same wine twice unless I find it outstanding.

  • RANDINTHECITY

LOL Sorry Ray! (no Im not)
    Enjoy the vino! :o)

  • KAHUNA

nice memory GV – yes Petite Sirah is my favorite- I actually skipped to that part in the video- LOL
Hey did you ask him why Capt Crunch hurts the top of your mouth after you eat half the box in a sitting?

  • Cubatobaco (Ray)

    Hahaha!
It's all good until I pull the clock off the wall and wear it around my neck…lol.

Looking forward to sitting back with this wine and a great cigar. Have a great night, Randi!

  • jason carey

Here's the thing.. you can't lump “Califorina” as a place. Its huge. there are many Micro climates, some of which are suitable for Sauvignon Blanc and some which are not.
so .. be a little more careful about lumping stuff together,..

Also his tasting room is not in NAPA , its in El Dorado

  • jaybloxham

QOTD: I don't have a set buying strategy. I buy all that I can afford.

Great show! His wines are at great price points

  • RANDINTHECITY

    You too Cuba!!!
    🙂

  • hahaa that is so funny the creator of captain crunch was on the show
QOTD: I try to be experimental buying wine, but if i come across a bad brand or something I will avoid it. I try to get good wines for the money I spend and up in Canada its hard to come across good QPRs

  • Marshall Minobe

    Gary,

You really come through and make things happen. One of my few posts was to chime in on getting this guy on the show. And he is a GREAT guy, so interesting, so passionate.

    Nice.

    Marsh

  • Cheliland

AWWW he is so sweetttt and the way he was looking at you is full of love!!

Answer: I expirement with brands flavors and flavors…And Choose By LABEL DESIGN!! THE CUTEST THE LABEL THE MORE PORBABILITIES THAT BOTTLE WILL GO HOME WITH ME !! =)

PS: Please put the freaking login button visible, I cant find it ! =)

  • NY Pete

    hey hey

  • johnfarrin

Another fascinating show! I generally like DIY people and Chiam seems to be one because he truly enjoys each facet.

QOTD: I start tasting varietals and historic blends from their native places trying to get a benchmark for them. I then venture out from their to experience what different climates do to those wines. To me, that's the beauty and interest of wine. The fact that two vineyards 100 yards from one and another, growing the same varietal, can be so different is astonishing.

  • I saw MM, we did it!

  • Hugo

I never had Cap'n Crunch, but I don't understand why a company would ever want to create an equivalent to Life cereals. These cereals are the best ever! 😉
The guest was great and very enjoyable to listen!

QOTD: I tend to experiment more when I'm in a good mood, but I would really like to try new stuff more often.

  • Thnx Binary 🙂 I feel it too!

  • BthinWine

I haven't been to C.G. di Arie before but I think I'll have to go there now. El Dorado and Amador counties in California are producing some very good wines. The Barbera and Petite Sirah from the region is top notch.

QOTD: Experimental. The label is important but not a major factor. Right now I'm attempting to expand my palate.

  • 🙂

  • Q: I don't generally go in for “branded” wines. Cost is important (esp. so right now), and then region (although sometimes you want comfort food, and this is true with wine too, maybe a nice big CA cab or zin that isn't too sweet but deep enough to get lost in).

Naturally, bias toward anything I've never had before or can't pronounce.

Great to see you at BigOmaha, where you did indeed crush and/or kill it (and who else could possibly have followed @scottharrison?)

As Mick Foley's fans would put it: thanks for putting my a– in that seat.

  • What a nice guy and great show. If I remember correctly, did you not carry his Zin a few years ago and have it on your show? I remember it being delish.

QOTD: I am the consummate eclectic wine buyer. I buy off-the-wall varietals from far away places. My “variety is the spice of life” way of enjoying wine.

    Cheers!

  • johnfarrin

Well Kahuna, if you hadn't have cheated by skipping to the PS portion you would know the answer to your question, now wouldn't you 😉

  • winecrazy

Great guy. I have to get some of that. I love Zins and petite Syrahs. I had a 2005 Turley Hayne Vineyards the other night and I just enjoyed it so much. I also had a Stags Leap as well and two different wines but both very nice.

I wish I would have been there today but as you know I'm at the shore. I really am bummed I didn't come now. 🙁 I would have loved to meet him. He's a great guest.

When are you buying a vineyard Homey?? I'll be there when you plant you first vine!!!!

QOTD: You know I like the big stuff!!! I like to do as many tatsings as I can so I can see what's out there.

  • Melissa

How adorable is your guest???? I want to go out and buy his wines just because he's so delightful!

QOTD: I buy from tastings, reading, and recommendations. I'm studying for my CSW right now, so I also buy as I learn.

  • castello

Yes Gary buy some land out here in Cali and lets make some godamn wine!
