Just recently got back from a trip to greece on the way back from South Africa for the world cup. I became very interested in the Xinamavro grape after listening to this episode and after a few e-mails from Markus, decided to detour from the regular tourist spots, and head north to Naoussa. Unfortunately, I was not able to hook up with Markus, but I visited 4 wineries – Kir Yianni, Alpha Estate, Dalamaras and Thimiopoulos, the one who makes the 3rd wine on this episode. All were great, but I especially liked Alpha Estate where winemaker Angelos Iatridis presented his full portfolio to me and some couple of older vintages and Thimiopolous. THimiopolous really showed me and my 5 yo daughter a great time and his family served us some food, barrel tasted the INCREDIBLE 2008 Uranos. Definitely look for some. I bought some bottles on wine library of the 2007, and if there is any left, I recommend buying some, and look out for the 2008. I have become a big fan of Xinomavro. Thanks Markus.

Greek wine has made an enormous effort to increase quality. New winemakers study in France. Greek ancient varieties are revived and Santorini white Assyrtiko, Nemea red Agiogiorgitico and Northern Greece red Xinomavro are some of the basic varieties that are exported around the world now.
