$30 Californian Sauv Blanc! Definitely one for the home market only. That’s taking the piss.

You are of course correct. I probably shouldn't post while drinking. . . .

  • lawrenceleichtman

Good to see you back. After viewing the Aussie video, I wasn't too sure. I would love to come to the party after attending the last one but we will be moving to Santa Fe, NM only a few weeks before that and will still be setting up the house though I'm going to have my son from Brooklyn stand in. We are drinking the few remaining bottles in our wine cabinet as we can't really take them in the car, driving an old Prius 2000 miles. Went to Rochioli in March, nice folks but I really didn't like this Sauvignon that much. Still prefer Merry Edwards though I know it's expensive. Sancerre floats my boat the most and is better price.

  • theverylastlurker

Yes, BPB shows are fun! We love 'em! You're right, the Cloudy Bay SB is overpriced. I drank a PN based blend this weekend.

  • Allan

Thanks for bringing back the thunder!

Sounds like one killer party in the making.

    Qotd: Dead Letter Office 2006.
    πŸ™‚

  • nitaT

glad you are back! Of course I am a French SB girl.. nice show.
QOTD: I had a nice champagne— Pierre Gimonnet..
I am going to try and make the party.. I live in CT but will be in the city for dinner so … we will see. would love to come.

  • Good to have ya back, GV/Mott. Hell yes to the brown paper bags! @kmurph bring some tricky thunder on these sets! Trying to clear up my schedule so I can go to both parts of 7/10 bash. What to bring to the @rshotel…hmmmm.

QOTD: I had Otokoyama sake from Hokkaido on Friday, Brooklyn Local 2 on Saturday, and a glass each of Nero d'Avola and Chianti on Sunday with dinner. Definitely a mix!

  • amsgpwarrior

QOTD: It wasn't wine! Went down to New Braunfels, TX, and floated the river for 5 hours with 10 of my best friends. Had a BADASS time on the river, got drunk, got wet, got a tan, and got to see a ton of boobies! And drank crap loads of Miller Lite, Shiner Bock, and Lonestar Beer. After the beer was gone, then we hit the tequila bottle. Nothing is better than beating last weekend's 100 degree heat with fun at the river.

  • 101?

  • great to have you back…did Kahuna's traffic go up this past week?
Have to rack the Chilean sauvignon blanc…primary fermentation is finally complete.
Man would I like to be able to make it for the festivities…

QOTD: weekend was crazy busy cleaning the barn and boring holes on the south slope for the vineyard…was so tired, I can't even recall what we had…but last night was the bomb.

Our friends at held a private function at their house ( which is just a few convenient miles from ours) hosting Silvano Brescianini of Barone Pizzini. Three beautiful Verdicchios and three sparkling wines that seriously rival anything else at the price point. The sparkling ROSÈ WAS SPECTACULAR!

  • Wines that Brought the Thunder this Weekend: Gary, drank these in the last 2 weeks, these wines BRING the Thunder. A Must Try: (WA State)

2007 Zerba Cellars Petit Verdot – 18-22 Bones No NJ Dist.
    2007 Smasne Farm Boy Red – 12 -15 Bones NJ/NY Dist.
    2007 Matthews Estates Claret – 32 – 35 Bones (pricy) NJ/NY Dist.

  • johnfarrin

It's hard for me to believe that, in only your fourth year, you had the audacity to take your SECOND full week off. Where has the work ethic gone πŸ˜‰

QOTD: Just one of my house wines, Pillar Box Red
QOTD II: Would LOVE to bring ME to the party but SF just a little too far away!

  • XpensiveWino

Yeah he is πŸ˜‰ Thanks for the support Randall. You my boy…you my boy Blue!!

  • scottEJ

Welcome back, G. Would loved to have seen a Loire wine on this ep.

QOTD: A sparkling cava and a cab. sauv/semillon blend. Also, lots of German beers at a street fest.

  • MarcBelgium

    Nice to see you back.
A week is a long time to mis it.

QOTD1. I conducted a concert on Saturday and then we had a late, very late dinner with lovely wine but I don't remember the names. Both from France.
Sunday we drank, while watching Roland Garros, a Pazo da Senorans, Albarinho.

QOTD2. I would love to be there, but, living in Europe and no plans for a trip to US this year, …. you know? A pitty.

  • I had the Pillar Box at a wine tasting this weekend. The wine sure gives a great bang for the buck.

  • Had a BENDER this weekend…

    2007 ROAR Pisoni
    2007 Carlisle Papera Ranch
2004 Kosta Browne Amber Ridge Syrah (winner of the weekend)
    2007 Sea Smoke Southing
    2006 Bergstrom Cumberland
2008 Loring Shea (thanks WLTV for the Loring recommendation, he is a stud)
    2008 Cana's Feast Counoise
2006 La Vie Black Mountain Pinot Noir
    A nebbiolo that I can't remember

    My head hurts

  • MarcBelgium

You're right, Dagueneau is amazing. But not only the Silex but also the Buisson Renard.
And concerning Musar, yeah, that's serious stuff to.

  • johnfarrin

Yeah Robert, almost everyone that I have ever reccomended this wine to feels
the same way. Costco here on the West Coast has it for $7.99 and in Florida
for $8.99. I've been drinking it for the last three vintages and it's VERY
    consistent in the quality.

  • cellarrat5

I feel you John, not all of us CA folk will be able to make it down for the hedonistic party of all parties. I will be there in spirit; that is the weekend after one of the biggest music festivals around, so I will be out of money and possibly out of brain, liver and kidney cells.

  • I enjoyed a 2008 La Joya Gewurztraminer Reserve(Colchagua Valley,Chile) and it was splendid. I was amazed how dry this Gewurz was considering the touch of sweetness the Alsatian wines have had in the past.

  • cellarrat5

Good to have you back from a much deserved break, although it sounds like you kept up the hustle regardless. Love me some stony Sauv Blancs, I have really been getting into them recently. Something about the refreshing and often citrus packed flavors have been bringing major thunder recently. Cooking for solutions had a few very nice offerings, and celebrity chefs cooking all manner of amazing food.

QOTD: I drank a lot of Belgium Beer (La Shouff (sp?) and Duvel were two of many), and ate an antelope burger, chalk another animal up on the list of creatures I have consumed. There was some Stone IPA and some Ruination Ale involved as well, long weekend.

  • NY Pete

GV”s big return and only 110 comments …. weak.

  • Phredd3

Finally checking the big return episode. Man, the party sounds fun. Maybe there's a way for me to make it? I don't think so, but DANG! That WLTV episode better be damn good.

QOTD: Nothing to the party of course, but this weekend I had 2 syrahs, 9 pinot noirs, a Sauternes, a Tokaji, two grenache/syrah blends, and a cava. NC Cindy tasting, plus WineKnurd and I met with KarlB. Fun weekend. Favorites were the 2005 Henri Gouges Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers, and the 2005 Chateau Guiraud Sauternes.

  • QOTD. Saturday I was at my friend's wedding in Spain. They served Deutz Champagne out of magnum, some white and red Rioja and a nice Manzanilla Sherry. Better than average wedding wines. Sunday was the flight back and we did NOT get upgraded unlike on the way over, so no quality wines. πŸ™

But the week leading to that was our 5 dat trip to Bordeaux and it was sick! Many '09 barrel samples (Pichon Comtesse, Ducru Beaucaillou, Chevalier, La Conseillante…) and other incredible tastings (Lynch Bages, Riussec, Suiduiraut, Le Gay, Clinet…). And the duck population will need some time to recover from all the foie-gras, magret and confit we ate. Cool stuff!

  • Randall

    “I’m in control now…”
    Wait… that was Alexander Haig…
Much love to the C.M. πŸ˜‰

  • kv47

We missed you too GV, its good to have you back. One whole week without a dose of WLTV was tough!! On a side note didn't get an email alert for the posting of this episode, wonder whats up with that. Looking forward to the brown bags. Why dont you go double blind.

The party sounds fab, wish I could make it but I live way way far away!! Enjoy!

QOTD – Taking a cue from this episode it'll be NZ Sauvignion Blanc

  • that's a normal number these days for 24 hours as I see it. Only 400 + for an entire week on prevoius, and then 100 is multiposts from a very few. The Vayniac crowd maybe ain't that big?

  • that's a normal number these days for 24 hours as I see it. Only 400 + for an entire week on prevoius, and then 100 is multiposts from a very few. The Vayniac crowd maybe ain't that big?

  • PurpleGrillz

Drank the 06 CJ Melka bought at WL. Deeelishuous! Would not mind seeing with a glass slipper some time. Oak Monster made a brief appearance but with a few hours in the decanter and served with a lamb shank braised in beaujolais, rosemary and garlic……. faces were melted.

I will be bringing 94 Beringer Cab Private Reserve or 98 Mouton… GV, can I bring both?

  • cellarrat5

Agreed, but give people time. When he disappears and then returns it takes people a while to get back on the comments. I am sure that never happens on the hardcore Vayniac forums πŸ˜‰

  • PurpleGrillz

I think a consistent 100 is plenty for such a niche thing. I think as the posts get bigger in number it feels more anonymous and less like a community and people drop out and start lurking again.

  • PurpleGrillz

I live in Lambertville, NJ. Who wants to carpool for 7/10?

  • cellarrat5

Comments fluctuate all the time. Some of the better episodes for some reason only bring in 250+, others bring in 500. I suppose there has been less comments this year than in the past looking back through the archives, but this is no reason to doubt the Vaynerarmy. You my friend are more cynical than I am with your doomsday predictions etc. Do you read a lot of Nietzsche?

  • njc2o

QOTD: Cleavage Creek Secret Red, 2007

This weekend coming up, trying to get a few of my fellow law students together for a blind cabernet tasting..

    2004 Ridgeline Vineyard
    2009 Yellow Tail
    2004 Dominus [thanks dad!]

  • charlzee

    Missed you GV

  • Anonymous

I don’t think I can get those out here in CA. That was one of the
better shows I have seen in a while. Great to see Gary mix it up once
    and a while πŸ˜‰

  • πŸ™‚ Attentive man here.
I'm not that pessimistic really, but I try to flip the coin so to see the other perspective. It prevents me from getting carried away by all things. I try not to read Nietzsche anymore, nor Wittgenstein or Sartre. Nowadays I read Douglas Adams, Norman Mailer and lots of factual literature about the human mind and organisational theory. But I'm sure I'll wander back to the philosophers at times. They tend to be very useful, especially with a glass of red alongside πŸ˜€

  • Mauricio_Fernandes

    Welcome back GV!!!

I wish I could be there with you guys at the party, but my vacation is only due next February now… πŸ™

Have a great time, record a nice and long show, showing the day!! Would be nice for the International Vayniacs!!!

    Best wishes,

  • Randall

Right on, cr5!! Seriously, I love seeing a wine forum where people are into really good beers (and philosophy) as well as the vino…
    I’ve had 4 from Brasserie D’achouffe:

La Chouffe – their flagship (a ‘golden ale’ w/spices)

Troublon – their Belgian IPA – Definately on my ‘Top 50 Most Unique Beers’ list

McChouffe – a Scottish/Abbey Dubbel mash up ale (no pun intended… also unique)

N’Ice – their spiced Christmas ale… one of the world’s best, along with the Rodenbach Gran Cru!! btw BOTH of those beers sell for only around $10 to $12!!!!

  • cellarrat5

I understand your desire to see things from a different perspective. It is quite easy in this socio-cultural constantly connected world of ours to be carried away by the sheer volume of “information” that can often be misleading. People have often accused me of being cynical, and just as often I say something similar to them as you said to me. Regarding getting carried away, I often do unfortunately, and still have much to learn about patience which as far as I can tell is paramount when discussing philosophy or even having a debate or exchange with certain individuals (after all, some people can be exasperating). I find it easier to read any subject with a glass of red, it seems drinking or other consumption of some sort was almost required by many great minds of our time. Perhaps I will dust off some of the philosophy and factual literature books and start reading again, I hear it is good for you πŸ˜‰

  • Randall

Oh yeah, forgot… You might like Monk’s Cafe Flemish Sour Red…
It’s in a very unique position for me, in that it is an ‘introductory’ ale to those who have never tried a sour ale, but also has an AMAZINGLY refreshing, delicious, balance of sweet and sour thing going on that I love… and I’m a hard-core Flemish/sour ale fiend…
    I mean, it’s no R.G.C., but what else is? :}

  • Anonymous

Yeah, it is not cheep compaird to your average swill, but worth every
penny. My friend and I will blow 40 or 50 bones each and only walk
away with 5-10 individual beers if we are lucky. Granted they are
    ushually in 750mls but still…

  • looper1313

Man, I wish that I could go to the 7/10 party.
With my wife preg, I can't even mention wine in the house without her getting pissed. And a trip to NYC, and Jersey… in the middle of Summer…. not a chance.
Any Vayniaks in Chicago doing local events?

QOTD: I have been so pumped about '04 brunellos, and had a castello di romitorio the other night that rocked. I would have brought a couple of those to WL. Instead, maybe I will drink them with a couple local Vayniaks?

  • looper1313

I think that it was the most dreaded reason of all…
People stopped going to WLTV.com religiously everyday, like they had in the past. I know that I didn't check for a couple of days. Once a couple of days go by, with no email about the new episode, I start wondering why. Then I start checking wltv.com. A couple more days go by, and I stop checking, and then just come back a couple of days later.
Watch out GV, people are very fickle. But they will be back
I think that a bunch of posts will flood in by tomorrow.

  • looper1313

    Jeez…
    Ballling huh?

  • Webmeshtar

    Great show again!
I can bring couple bottles of Zlatan Plavac 2006 (Zlatan otok) and Babic 2007 (Gracin – Suha punta) if someone pick me up at Zagreb (Croatia) :))

Hope you all have a great time on party!

QOTD: Ilocki Traminac ? Kasna berba 2006 (Traminer Late vintage 2006) – Croatia

  • I've been playing catch up on the episodes, so the week off was good. Welcome back.

QotD: I had Bogle Chardonnay this weekend and thought it was really good. Excellent for 12 bucks. I plan to bring either Toasted Head's Untamed Red or Ten Mile Proprietary Red…both huge Reds…love both.

  • Randall

I think it’s the “Houblon” Bel. IPA? I dunno, geesh, waddya wanna (hic)… too many Belgians, not enough time… izzonly 10%… outta myway, stupid wall…

  • dsallen

    Yes! Brown bag show!

  • Life can be about expanding palates and minds πŸ˜‰
