93/100

Lines of the day, all three of them! ‘This wine is too legit to quit’, ‘we may have a highlight reel just of this show’ and ‘It’s Kendall Jackson with fancy clothes on’

Great show, camera goes for a walk with GV, stories of school days, dad getting in the way (Gary looked like at one point he was going to tell him to butt out). It was all happening here and I loved it all

That was all over the place, but awesome.

qotd; Rare to find ones likable.

  • Wild. I never took German, but the HS German teacher taught her class the words in German of Cypress Hill's “Insane in the Membrane”. Truly legendary.

Side QOTD: Tried it, but don't dig it that much.

QOTD: I don't drink a whole lot of American Chard, but the aforementioned Four Vines and Hess sum up two different styles I appreciate.

  • plcb

I'm looking forward to watching. PA has all three however my store has sold out of the Rombauer. The Smoking Loon and Bogle are always available with a steady supply.

  • Tjo1913

I'd have to go with Alma Rosa Santa Barbara County Chard. When I'm in between paychecks I'll go with Chalone Monterey.

  • man great show gary. Man wine library more like wine museum, that store is huge. I really don't drink a lot of chardonnay so maybe have to try this out. the last chard i had and i really liked Paraiso Springs Chardonnay.

  • Lhickey

    qotd:clos de soliel domaine serene

  • WpgGord

QOTD: Woodbridge 2006 Chardonnay was good. I think Jancis Robinson recommended it on your show. I'm not a big fan of Chardonnay though, so I haven't had many.

  • CentralCoastKyle

Qotd: (1) Talley “Oliver's Vineyard” Chard: California ripeness, amazing minerality, weight and length, but still finessed.
    (2) Diatom “Clos Pepe” by Greg Brewer of Brewer-Clifton …the closest you can get to Chablis in the New World, period.

  • chateauneufdupimp

    1. Mount Eden Chardonnay, Santa Cruz Mountains- ridiculously great wine. Corton wishes it could be this good…
    2. Chateau Montelena Chardonnay, Napa- classic, could still win the 'Judgement of Paris' tasting hands down. (Chalone is just gross now, and those Burg's are way too expensive)
    3. The Eyrie Vineyards, Original Vines Chardonnay- old block Wente clones planted like 4 decades ago. Great acidity, who says you can't make great Chard in Oregon?

  • cellarrat5

Fantastic show, your Pops, Brandon, Random discussions about high school classes and a new theme to top it all off with interesting results. I am honestly surprised you rated the Rombauer so high. I did not think you like butterball oak chips so much. I was at their winery a few moths ago and was not that impressed, but people love that stuff (my dad included).

QOTD: There were a couple Santa Barbra Chards I tried that were very good. I cannot for the life of me remember the names.

  • yacochuya

wow, hard for me to imagine you failed a foreign language….your pronunciation of foreign wine is awesome. Sorry for being a smart a** Missed you in South Africa for WC2010…You should have gone. Good thing they make wine other than pinotage….not a fan of that varietal.

Dont drink much of any Cali Chard

  • WineWoman

Marzipan-yum…it has a coconutty, almond paste flavor kind of like pignoli nut cookies. They used to sell slices that were red and white half circles that looked like watermelon, with lots of granulated sugar in them–don't think you can find those anymore.

QOTD: Newton and Landmark Overlook. I recently had a Shannon Ridge for 9 bones and liked it in the same way you enjoyed the Bogle–it had just a tad too much residual? or fakey-fake sugar but enjoyable nonetheless.

  • Mott, I think you missed an 85 shot in episode #892.

    QOTD: Chateau Chantal Charonney
    http://store.chateauchantal.com/store/product/9

Sometimes you need to crush it with the local grown and produced.

  • Cubatobaco (Ray)

Wow! This episode was insane! Right up my alley with complete randomness. Always a classic when Sasha is in the hizzy!

QOTD: I don't drink enough US Chard to voice my opinion, but I'll say, oh, Chalk Hill.

    T-Minus 7 episodes to #900….

  • Iggy

QOTD: Ramey Ritchie Vineyard Chardonnay 2005, but its a bit expensive here in Australia.

  • lisaupnorth

Long time viewer (not lurker!), first time commenter. Fun episode. The German story was a hoot- ich spreche ein bischen Deutsch, so I laughed out loud at parts of the video. We don't drink much Chardonnay, but like Frei Brothers Russian River Valley Chard. We also like Bogle Petite Syrah and Smoking Loon merlot for economic reds.

  • plcb

In PA the wines are 10.99, 10.99, 31.99

  • chicago mark

    FRANCISCAN .

(shut your hole..we're taping here! ) ..sheesh ! from funny nice guy to all biz.

  • Jparadisee

Really fun show. Had to comment for the side question. I grew up loving marzipan fruit. It was my absolute favorite thing when I was a kid. Did you know those rainbow cookies with the jelly if made right have marzipan in the cake layers?

Qotd: I have to say I don't have an American chard that I've really enjoyed. But will definitely give the Bogle a taste for educational purposes. But I will have to have some Riesling standing by for safety to wash away all that butter 😉

  • Good show as always. This one really exemplifies, though, that perhaps you should look into wearing a microphone – any time you're not looking at the camera your volume just drops off significantly. It happens sometimes when you're just sitting and taping, but definitely here since you were on the move. Just a thought 🙂

  • Jrouss

QOTD: honestly I dont really like chardonnay, but probably the best american one I've has is Chateau montellena. But for 45-50 bucks its a little overpriced.

  • No, they just have a party

  • Interesting fact , could be a topic for a show..

  • MDSmitty2488

QOTD: My favorite American chardonnay would be the Russian River Ranches by Sonoma-Cutrer. To me that tops all California (at least those I've tasted)

  • tederf

Just had the Pellegrini Family Vineyards Olivet Lane Chard with dinner this evening. Not bad for $20. Melon, white fruit and no “oak monster.”

My favorite Cali Chard is the Arcadian Sleepy Hollow made by Joe Davis. Reasonably priced for the quality. Very Burgundian. Seek it out. Will age very well.

Long thread on the Wineberserkers forum a while ago about the Rombauer Chard. Lots of posts from retailers. Seems it is known as the “Cougar Juice” from the demographic of its main audience.

  • Fun episode! Props to Herr Ender and Herr Figge for enduring my German!

Favorite CA Chardonnay to date is Gary Farrell (which I mentioned earlier). Serious juice!! Gonna have to start hanging out with Lisa S if she is pouring Kistler and Peter Michael!

  • LurkerKing

“What's going on behind closed doors” – Do we have a release date yet from S. Vaynerchuk?

  • wawineguy

Great show. Was fun seeing the backrooms at WLTV.

QOTD: Not a big fan of Cali chard. I did drink a Chateau Ste. Michelle Columbia Valley Chard that was pretty darn good for the price point.

  • Alexandre-CF

Gary, that was awesome, just the Bogle review deserve 95 pts with the Medusa and stuff plus all that crazy 96+ pts show for sureeeeee

QOTD: Jordan chardonnay, from russian river .

  • redrider21

QOTD: I don't have a ton of experience with California Chardonnay, but the Peter Michael wines are the best I've been fortunate enough to try.

  • paulLI

gary, that is very freaky that you ask about marzapan. just got in the door from a trip to NYC's most awesome spanish store called Despaña in SoHo on Broome street. They didnt have any in stock but I'm a fan of tapas foods. Wound up buying some Jamon Iberico among other drinking companion goodies. They also have a factory in Queens on Northern Blvd that you can visit but it's a tiny store.

  • ahillsey

Hirsch, Littorai, and Greg Brewer's new Diatom wines.

  • Ejdaking

Personally I love (or am on a huge kick right now) Alexander Valley Vineyards Chardonnay. It has butter, but also enough tropical fruits along with creamy banana to make it an interesting and layered Chard. It has a tiny bit of clove to it as well, which brings it out of the mundane and into something exciting.

  • ErieWineGuy

    This show is fun stuff!

And the Star of the show made an appearance – Sasha, of course!

I keep telling myself to give Cally Chards a try, to expand my palate and to try and find out just what possible reason there could be to oak your whites, but I never get around to it.

I keep thinking of the most refreshing, cold, lemon, mineral and acidic Chablis I ever had, after a workout and sauna at a spa………..Ahhhhhhhhh……….Fantastic……………!

Now the waiter comes along and dumps a pan of boiling butter and vanilla into my Chablis.

Do you think he just improved the flavor for me? I don't think so scooter……….

I know I'm being hard on oaking, and I know that it can add certain qualities of creaminess, fullness and beautiful tropical flavors etc…..and I will learn to appreciate some of the qualities someday.

But for now, I just don't get it, so I don't drink Cally Chards.

Cheers! Back to my clean, crisp, acidic Vinho Verde!

  • i think the sweetest app ever for your phone would be “gary's scores”. search a wine or something and have his tasting notes and scores pop up! would be great to have if you are at the wine store or something and want a reference point

  • laurieinvt

Great off the cuff show- thanks! Mott is amazingly good at keeping you in the frame on your random jaunts through the WL offices- kind of a Blair Witch Project effect 😉
    SQOTD: Yes- yum! And fun!
QOTD: Rarely drink Cali Chards because I don't generally like them- so no favorite.

  • It's so fun to watch these from the computer after watching the live taping. Def a crazy episode with all it's randomness…

    QOTD: I have no idea.

  • Not ridiculous, it was a GREAT show. Love the ad hoc fun and energy. More surprise Q&A sessions please!

QOTD: No Chards in the cellar.

  • Thursday

definitely would be to reading your thoughts on all the wines you are tasting…

QOTD: haven't had it in the past couple of vintages, but have been a fan of the Pine Ridge Dijon Clone Chard.

  • orangebottle

What an unexpected twist, I love how you walked around the office and looking for your classmates. It was hilarious. Then Sasha showed up tasting wine and asking for food. You gave him a quick NO. I had to laugh. It?s like watching your favorite show. You know all the character and their personalities.
The price of Rombauer is getting up there. Do you think they are still recovering from the fire around 10 years ago? I like their Chards when it was more like a supermarket price.
qotd: i don't drink much Chards. When i do, its Mondavi or Franciscan the typical stuff.

  • Great show – bringin' crazy back. QOTD: My favorite basic Cali chard right now is Frei Brothers.

  • Great show – bringin' crazy back! I enjoyed the 10 cent tour of WineLib. QOTD: My favorite basic Cali chard right now is Frei Brothers. Higher end is Krupp Brothers Black Bart's Bounty.

  • Randall

More Vinho Verde, Gary!! Just sayin'…

  • Randall

    HA!!

  • ErieWineGuy

    Yes, more Vinho Verde, Gary!!!!!!

  • Darren

Sqothd- Love the Marzipan- When you get that “almond paste” sniffy sniff i get excited
Need you to rate ALL the wines you are drinking/tasting , something I would even pay for if the portfolio is expansive
You rock Gary, I make all my servers watch your show and i give out free shwag when they can answer questions about the current episode
    Qotd- Dutton Goldfield- Russian River

  • Randall

Not so much on the P.M.
But the Kistler is another story…
    ;}

  • ONUMello

(side) Not that I can remember
QOTD: In general, I can't stand American chardonnays. The only ones I've remotely enjoyed are unoaked. Add any oak and forget it- I generally only like chards from France. I'm drinking a Burg right now that fits my palate fine, but it seems to be completely unoaked.

  • smiledoc

    qotd…Walter Hansel Alyce 07!

  • QOTD: If I'm going for an everyday chardonnay, Heron, BY FAR is my favorite. Overall? Paul Hobbs just brings it for me.
