Lines of the day, all three of them! ‘This wine is too legit to quit’, ‘we may have a highlight reel just of this show’ and ‘It’s Kendall Jackson with fancy clothes on’

Great show, camera goes for a walk with GV, stories of school days, dad getting in the way (Gary looked like at one point he was going to tell him to butt out). It was all happening here and I loved it all

Gary, have you tried Georgian wine? I tried some homegrown from a friend's vineyard outside Tbilisi last year and even though it was probably not comparable to any “traditional” European or New World wines, it was pretty good and fresh-tasting. They did invent wine, according to some historians.

Was at your store last weekend for the first time. Love what you're doing. Keep it up.

Favorite Cali Chard is Pride's Chardonnay, just a touch of oak treatment, but other than that, creamy, floral, and tropical.

Also brings back memories of visiting Pride, the most beautiful winery in Napa, IMHO.

    Great show, 107 to go!

  • jaredlevy

My manager doesn't do that for me! πŸ™ In fact my som mocks this show, not fun.

  • Markjosephmcnabb

Awesome episode!!!! Favorite Cali Chards—Peter Michael/Aubert.

  • πŸ™‚ On another note, Have you guys tried any of the current '08 Black Kite Pinots? I'm wondering if they're as good as '07.. Thx!

  • Americans clearly never had a marzipan Christmas candy? What's that. If you want marzipan go to LΓΌbeck (Germany) i December, big Christmas fair and a huge marzipan market. One of the most popular cakes in my country is the princess cake, covered with a shell of marzipan. Have I had, yes, like, not in huge quantities.
Took German and Spanish? Wow and still pronounce like you do πŸ˜‰ Oh you got F's , well then πŸ˜€
“Shut you hole!” That's rude, right? or?
“Is no food?” Had to laugh there
QOTD: Actually I haven't had more then 4-5 US Chards and they all were too oaky and buttery and that is not my style.

  • ilbee

I think you are replicable Gary! I mean, what wine critic won't pause a tasting and leave the table to go talk about german/spanish courses that happened 19 years ago?

QOTD: In general American wines are almost non-existent in the Finnish market. In whites all we pretty much have are such great brands as Gallo, Paul Masson, Carlo Rossi, Fetzer and Turning Leaf. Is it a big surprise that I haven't come across a half-decent Chardonnay from the U.S.? Oh yeah, I tried a Kendall-Jackson Chard in a restaurant in Key West and hated it for being way too oaky.

For now, I just drink white Burgundy.

  • Randall

    Not yet…

  • Red Shouldered Hawk

Cuvaison, on Silverado Trail in Napa. I always liked the way their acidity played off against the butteriness. I don't drink Chard very often, and almost always find it too buttery.

  • AllanJonassen

This was better than #892, but not too exciting. Maybe because of the fact that Cali Chards doesn't really light my fire.

    Some good moments though…

Sasha, who can beat him? Nobody!! NO FOOD!!! HAHAHA!! πŸ™‚

Qotd: Had a Kistler (think it was the Hyde?) that was really nice, but way too expensive though. And ultimately, not worth the money. I won't buy it again, sorry.

  • AllanJonassen

    My thoughts on Chardonnay…..

    ZzZzZhardonnay.

  • RichieHell

QOTD: Columbia Crest Unoaked Chardonnay from 2008. That was the only one I had so far which I liked. Oh and marzipan is awesome. Even more so in dark chocolate.

  • Hi Gary. Ever tried the most famous marzipan from Germany – check out http://www.niederegger.de/en/index.php

  • A_S

    Marzipan is goooooooooooood.

QOTD: 2006 Au Bon Climat Santa Barbara Chardonnay

  • Altboy97

Love the HdV Chardonnay I picked up there at WL, but that's a whole different price point. I had to laugh how the area outside your office has filled up since the big party. You must have made quite an effort to clear that area out for the big WLTV taping there.

  • tooch

Maldonado Chardonnay is pretty hard to beat at this point.

  • Anonymous

    definition of lurker?!!

  • WineTechie

QOTD; I really like Kendall Jackson Grand Reserve. I love the buttery flavor so I will be looking for the Rombauer this weekend as well as the Smoking Loon.

  • Randall

They should both be available in Pitts. πŸ™‚
    Cheers

  • HuskerJamie

Recently had to close out some Mayacamus Chard at the store here and I took the two remaining bottles home. Super thick and full of banana and pineapple, not too much oak.

  • DAveAll

another good show subject. EXCELLENT! fun trivia on German class.
Trivia on marzipan – the secret is the almonds. :*) cats out, ugh? ha

Eclectic – that's this show. nice.
QOTD: still seeking one. Will try above 3 to see.

  • Phredd3

Great show. This was truly the old-school feel: a little something crazy and off-the-cuff to go with the tasting, and a cameo by half the staff including Sasha. This is why I watch.

Side QOTD: I've had marzipan plenty of times. My wife keeps trying to convince me it is good, and I do like almonds. Something about the paste, though, is just meh.

QOTD: Shafer Red Shoulder Ranch is my hands-down favorite Cali chard to this point. It is Cali in everyway, but the oak is balanced with good acidity and freshness. No popcorn in sight.

  • XpensiveWino

That was the best show in some time GV! I also have to a gree with Castello, Lisa S and others Rombauer for $24 bones!? That is my father in law's favorite white wine so I buy it for him quite often. I've never found it for under $28.99.

QOTD: Dumol is my favorite Cali Chard. That said Chappellet isn't too far behind great wine for the coin.

  • Sara Salcedo

    Yes on the marzipan! Yuck!!!
Great show !!!! College broke student so my wine expertise can't go so far but ill keep trying !
Hey there is a good a idea for a show !!! Wine for broke college wine lover students!

  • QOTD: Arnot-Roberts Napa Valley Green Island Vineyard Chardonnay…

This wine is responsible for saving California Chardonnay for me. In Napa Valley and the wine comes out with less than 13% alcohol? The owner is a cooper and he doesn't believe in new toasty oak for Chardonnay! Neutral barrels, high-acidity, clean delicious flavors with great weight. It is a small production gem that is seriously worth seeking out.

  • scottEJ

Thanks, G. Really liking the widely-available concept.

QOTD: Such a hard varietal to peg. But, my most recent findings are the Kendal-Jackson Camelot Highlands & Breggo chards. KJ kills it for the price and the Breggo is just flat out killer.

  • Krunch517

“EDEN, SHUT YOUR HOLE?” Wow Gary getting a little MEL GIBSON on us? Always respected the way you handle situations, But You lost a few points with me.

Flip side the show was good and informative.

  • QOTD: 2006 Hanzell Chardonnay

Pricey, usually almost 100 canadian bucks but worth every penny. Elegant yet vivacious…light on the oaking. Grand Cru-esqe.

  • Marzipan. Ah, yes….almond paste. πŸ™‚

Wonder how that Smoking Loon Chardonnay would pair with Ben and Jerry's Mission to Marzipan ice cream. Ha!

    Great show, Gary.

  • Cheryl S.

Marzipan – I've had it, and hate it (though I love almonds, go figure).

Really enjoyed this episode since although I don't normally drink California chards, I had Smoking Loon last week, and the Bogle a couple of weeks ago. Since I don't like oaky, buttery Chards, I didn't care for the Smoking Loon, though I thought it was pretty decent for the price for those who do. I liked the Bogle well enough for the price that I'd buy it again when I want an inexpensive Chard, though I prefer their Petite Sirah.

QOTD: I don't usually drink US chardonnays, and haven't cared for most of the ones I've had, but I do like Mer Soleil Silver. I liked the 2007 Travis unfiltered chardonnay, but wasn't crazy about the 2008. I also drink Foxglove sometimes.

  • Brunellofello

Hey Gary, I'm 50 years old and I don't even know what marzipan is. Good show today. I like it when you wander around the building, it gives us a little glimpse of what WL is like behind the scenes. QOTD: When I want a Chardonay, I usually go to a local shop and buy a Darioush, Plumpjack, or Walter Hansel.

  • Stan The Wine Man

    Gary,
I agree with you on the Rombauer. Over-hyped for sure. Folks really get stuck on the label recognition with this one so you have to give them a lot of credit for marketing. I love their zin too, but the last cab I had from them tasted like a vanilla dipped oak chip. As far as my favorite chardonnay from California I would have to pick Gundlach Bundschu for it's wonderful balance and almost Burgundian characteristics. I went to a crab feed with Gun Bun as the pour and I thought I had went to heaven… I'll never forget it!
Loved the show, and it is nice to see the human element of your set from time to time. Love the fact that you employ some of your buddies from high school. Never lose that underlying humility dude, it is what makes you rock!

  • Rombauer, is one of the many reasons I watch this show. The wine world needs to listen to the point Gary is consistently making. Nice work? again Gary!

  • dwp

    Neyers!

  • John__J

qotd: The 1st time you asked this question you asked about fav American chard, so I'm gonna go with Independent Producer's chard outta Washington, as far as a cheaper chard goes. Haven't had it in at least a year as I rarely ever buy new world chard's.

I've always understood marzipan to be an almond candy flavor, altho I don't think I've ever had it.
Haven't had Rombauer, but if it's on par w the one from Smoking Loon then it's grossly overpriced.

  • GYHTBT

    Gary,
Rombauer for me is the Kendal Jackson of the 2000's. Butter and Oak bonanza, not my fav but I know a lot of folks (mostly women) that love that wine. As for $24 vs. $8, last I checked Rombauer was a business and not a charity. If my Chard was that popular I'd sell it for $24 and not $8. Let Smoking Loon save the world from Charles Shaw.

QOTD: No question. 2007 Pahlmeyer both Napa and Sonoma versions are AMAZING. $$ but worth every penney.

  • castello

Not sure but I think Gary is talking about a different style marzipan. Jell like stuff?

  • castello

Email Mott! Mine is working pretty good. He may be able to help you outtttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt.

  • QOTD: I hate to sound like a broken record here, but our current fav American Chard is the Lenz White Label. MSRP is $12 but we usually buy it for $7.99 at local wine stores in Riverhead. It's really a nice, unoaked chard – nothing “special” and perhaps not overly complex, but very crisp, nice acidic finish and quite enjoyable.

For the price, it's fantastic – it holds up to $30-40 bottles of white burgundy.

  • Derekbanas

Maldonado is the best Chardonnay I've drank. I prefer it's citrus and tropical fruit flavor. It's very dense, but pricey!

  • hope you are well gv. great show….unfortuantley (or fortunuantely depending how you look at it) i havent seen these wines in the supermarkets in england.

  • Yeah..great show published by great man…

    thanks dude

  • Nice episode… always good when Sasha makes an appearance… πŸ˜‰

    QOTD1: no marzipan

QOTD2: Favorite, 4 years running, Melville Cone 76 'Inox” Chardonnay… try it if you can!!!

  • Eacarrr

QOTD: Justin from Paso Robles makes an excellent Chard that's crisp and acidic as opposed to oakey/buttery. I prefer that style to the Rombauer's.

  • Bright19

When I was in Napa a few weeks ago a couple of the wine tour guides refered to the Rombauer Chard as Cougar Juice. LMAO so funny but true πŸ™‚
