Lines of the day, all three of them! ‘This wine is too legit to quit’, ‘we may have a highlight reel just of this show’ and ‘It’s Kendall Jackson with fancy clothes on’

Great show, camera goes for a walk with GV, stories of school days, dad getting in the way (Gary looked like at one point he was going to tell him to butt out). It was all happening here and I loved it all

Episodes like this are what keep me inspired. Gary, you are indescribable. The tour of the back offices was amazing, thanks. Your dad is really growing on me, :). Good luck on what you are working on, that little hint you dropped was very interesting…. although with someone like you, I don't think you need much luck. So. I will say, good luck with your timing.

QOTD: I love Newton red label, and Kistler unfiltered, and as you can probably tell, I'm into the heavier whites. Both of these wines are on the buttery side.

Keep doing what you are doing. I Have to say I was sad last week not being able to see any new episodes, but I kept myself busy with past episodes, and getting my business off the ground. BY THE WAY EVERYONE, if you are an entrepreneur, you HAVE to read Gary's book. It is a beautiful summary of what is going on, and there is also a little crystal ball action going on, where you can see what the near future will bring by way of social networking.

one last thing, Gary, you were awesome on the FOX show yesterday. I live in CA, and the Bell story is important to us, but like you said, it is happening everywhere. When more cities start holding public officials accountable, you are right that we are going to see this a lot more.

I am a Hanzell Club member. I picked up the 06 when they had a 50% off sale for the Holidays. A steal at 35 bones. So I agree with you Adrian Hanzell chard is awesome.

  • NY Pete

hey GV, which pallet belongs to SS Chris?

    2) Throwing underwear at wine
    3) Wine Library Road Trip
    4) German 3 as an elective
    5) Sasha loves Rombauer = diapers?
    6)” Ian, shut your hole.”

  • DAveAll

Love it! Very true! but you said it in a very humorous way! GR8

  • Dawn9850

    A great show Gary!
QOTD: Repeating myself here from my comments on Mondays show……Four Vines Naked Chard is my favorite right now. Grew up in Sonoma County and used to love the heavy oak, buttery Chards, but not anymore. Haven't found a CA Chard recently that doesn't overdo the oak and butter. 🙁

    Wonderful!

May the Jeremy's of this world unite under drink! And Sir Gary, delightful as always!

    Cheers!

Funny line of the day….Sasha, “No food?”

QOTD: Shafer, Red Shoulder Ranch Vineyard

Today in my PA store, a customer came in looking for Rombauer Chardonnay. I excitedly asked, “Are you a Vayniac?” Blank stare. She didn't know what I was talking about. She recently had the Rombauer in Las Vegas and was curious to see what it costs in PA.

    marzipan-yes-ick

  • TonyE

Marzipan was always on top of the Christmas Cakes we had in England, we a layer underneath the royal icing. My favorite part.

  • Tomorsat

Without question, Martinelli, Kistler, or Marcassin when I can find it. Otherwise, why drink Chard? I actually pop a bottle, maybe once a month, at most, and stopped bringing Chard to my in-laws when they started dropping ice-cubes in the glass when my back was turned!.

  • QOTD – I should be representing my home state of WA but the best American chard I've ever had was a Ridge vineyards santa cruz chard out of cali. Killer!

Also, marzipan is ok. Kinda meh. Don't mind the flavor. Think it is more of a texture issue going on that I don't love.

  • Good call on House of Independent Producers chardonnay from Washington. I recently tried the '08 it at a wine tasting.. – light, good balance and not too oaky… $10. Everyone agreed it was a great value chard.

  • YNWA.CPH.DK

QOTD: Back in the early nineties the supermarket I worked in used to sell a CA Chard called Carriage House (or Caridge, can't remember). We sold truck loads…does anyone know it??

More recent: Foxglove — very nice!

Reg. marcipan I'm going 85 points.

    Fantastic show btw!

  • I recently had a Sine Qua Non Chard based wine called “the Petition” It was really good. I mean really good.

huge fan of marzipan. I used to work in a candy shop here in Portland when I was in high school. I would get to do the buying sometimes. I would always buy it for the store and eat all of it.

  • Syphen9

    California's TOP Chards…

    Chablis Type:
    Stony Hill
    Schoolhouse
    Frog's Leap

    Butter Bombs:
    El Molino
    Sea Smoke

  • Pizza Vino Joe

QOTD: My favorite Chardonnay property is Saintsbury in Carneros. It used to be the “Reserve” Chardonnay that was my favorite. But, they have since gone to a single vineyard program and I would need to declare a new favorite for each vintage. I also do love the Hanzell Chardonnay.

  • stephenjohnbryde

    heak yes i've had Marzipan

when i was in Österreich (Austria)
    they love it there

  • Chris

kunde makes some good chards, i tasted an excellent chard at mauritsen in dry creek valley yesterday as well

  • Chris

ohh yeah marzipan is great my girlfriend loves princess cake and i have to admit i do as well

  • Chris

i think it ian not eden, and thats how bros talk to each other

  • JayZee13

That was a ridiculous show – boy, things really got off track. But then again, that's one of things I've always liked about WLTV. Plus, you cannot beat an appearance by Sasha, Jeff D and Brandon in the same show!!! I think we've now seen Brandon twice in a couple of weeks. Perhaps he is becoming less camera shy? 😉

Q: Marzapan – Yes, I've had it, and I'm not fond of it but it's okay.
QOTD: Four Vines Naked Chardonnay for a value play – it reminds me a little bit of Chablis which is my favorite type of Chardonnay.

  • Your show has gotten better and better over the years, Gary. What a difference from Eps #1 until now. You really know how to keep it interesting. Well done my friend. Hope to see you soon around the hood. Peace.

  • Skimeister

QOTD – La Crema (Russian River valley, Sonoma County, CA) – the '06 vintage is my present fav, though '07 is maturing fast. Lots of consistency there. It's probably a love or hate chard, but all I can say is… Mmmmmm… Yum! I'm seeing pricing between $15 – $24 depending on the state.

  • I had the ’07 per GV’s recommendation but have to say I felt like I was chewing a leather glove. Not quite my style.

  • “You took German 3? Why?”

  • Gwee1

I agree with you on the Clone 76. One of my favorite chards. Ive only tried the current release which i believe is the 09

  • This was a very interesting episode, it would be great if more of them were like this: going around, talking to others and Sasha and Mott and K-Murph making their appearances… I kind of like this “cinema verité” style, and the kicker is that there was enough WINE talk to go around.

SIDE QOTD: Love it, specially this one-http://www.garalysoka.com/un-antojo-al-dia/mayo/2371897 , or this- http://www.garalysoka.com/un-antojo-al-dia/febr

QOTD: California Chardonnay? Probably Mondavi Private Selection.

  • jsums

I'm loving this concept! Fun shows! Of course it can't (and shouldn't) go on forever, but it's a very enjoyable mini-theme. I totally agree with you on the Rombauer. The KJ VR Chard delivers the exact same profile at half the price. Done and done. QOTD – Interesting results for me. Going back to my CT notes, the top three American Chards (though there were definitely other Chards rated higher from elsewhere) for me are as follows:

    1) Wolffer “Perle” Chardonnay, The Hamptons '06
    2) KJ “Grand Reserve” Chardonnay, Cali '06
    3) Gloria Ferrer Chardonnay, Carneros '06

All the same vintage, but LI came out on top. GO NY! I also discovered I haven't had a Chardonnay since April! I've kind of replaced my “slots” for Chardonnay in my little 34 bottle cellar with things like Assyrtiko, Verdejo, Viognier, and Vermentino. Been busy expanding the palate…

  • jsums

I'm too am a fan of all three bottlings (including the Monterey) of the '07 La Crema Chardonnays. Killer year for them all around.

  • jsums

You must be ballin' if you're drinking the Sine Qua Non wines. Talk about cult! Cheers!

  • Jim Harris

The greatest chard from Cal that I have ever tasted was The Judge by John Kongsgaard.
My favorite-not in the stratosphere- chards are Walter Hansel, Chassuer and for a long time, the Chablis styled Chateau Montelana. And I too, like the Bogle chard. For the price, it's like the proverbial broken drum, you can't beat it!

  • Drj

my favorite chards are, and not in any particular order:
    St. Francis
    Chalone
    Kristen
because these are not “oaky” (oakey) (no oak monster) but they are OK.

  • RobinC

I can't remember whether the marzipan question was on this show or the last, but I made marzipan from scratch once and it is so superior to the packaged marzipan that if one wants to get ahold of The Joy of Cooking, or google it, it is well worth trying the homemake kind. I spread it on a pie crust as the bottom layer of some pie which was incredibly great.

I too took German in college. I had lived in Germany as a child and thought it would be fun. It was the hardest class I have ever taken. At one point the teacher (a nun) to my extreme mortification said to the class that Robinelle (a name used only by my family or those hostile to me) was relying on her background of German and not studying. I then studied like a demon and was from then on able to answer any of the question she shot at me, but I didn't get a great grade That and Bowling adversely affected my grade point average.

QOTD: Cambria Katherine's Vineyard or Joel Gott Chardonnay

  • Marzipan from scratch? sounds tasty

  • Four Vines Naked has consistently been one of my top Cali values, too! They were one of the leaders of the Naked Chard movement

  • Kunda is bioD too, right?

  • Jim Harris

QOTD: I drink Concha Y Toro Frontera Sauvignon Blanc. It tastes like SB. It's clean, crisp and has a little jalapeno flavor, which I adore in SB. I really like it with a cold cut sandwich with pepperoncinis ! A great match.

  • Anonymous

Ditto. I’m 51 and I’ve never heard of marzipan until this show.

  • QOTD1: Have never tried *real* marzapan
QOTD2: Don't have a favourite American Chardonnay because I never drink it. I'm much more into Chablis and Pouilly Fuissé.

  • tederf

Funny you should mention Joy of Cooking — author was Irma Rombauer – great aunt of the winery founder Koerner Rombauer. Koerner was a pilot for Braniff (remember them?)

  • NitaTaub

Rombauer… not at all like KJ!!!!!!!!!!!!

I Love this vineyard! I am not a big california lover but it is a wonderful place to visit … Chard not my favorite but yes, a great vineyard!

    thanks Gary for the show!!!!
    DONT STOP OK??!!

  • NitaTaub

PS. i dont drink california chard at the moment– only french..

  • QOTD; David Bruce

  • Mike Drash

Great show! Took me back to your early shows. I was reminded why I enjoy WLTV. Your enthusiasm is contagious. Mondavi Napa Valley Chard is rocking. Much more refined than the Rombauer. Similar pricing.

  • Webb Albert

Favorite American Chardonnay currently is the Mt. Harlan Chardonnay from Calera Wine company.

  • Phil G

Well, that was a crazy show – I said out loud, “what the heck is going on there?”

QOTD – no thanks, other things to buy instead!

  • SantaCruzMountainsGirl

    QOTD: Ridge Monte Bello Chard

  • Rimarfish

QOTD: I don't drink Chard these days, but if I do I will go for France or even Australia, but definitely no Cali Chard. Too heavy and oaky most of them…

  • 1: Marzipan is good. I like it better when it's baked in something- cookies, cakes.
2: Buena Vista Carneros! Great Pinots and Chards. No butter or oak.
