First! Love me some Nebbiolo wines. 🙂

  • JLVillacorta

Damn… I feel so young. I graduated high school in 2006… Oh well. I love the nebiolo grape but i’ve only had barbaresco and barolo.

    top five?

  • QOTD: 2003. Yeah…buddy!

  • 2002.

Great show. 1/3 isn’t too bad for this category.

  • TimCtheFilmGuy

    87 woot! Oldish guy.

  • sethsethy

Yes! affordable nebbiolo. thats where its at.

  • TheSmirkingLurker

This episode, and the 2 preceding it, (despite having a guest – who, himself was really great actually) have been fantastic. I really enjoyed your ’07 Napa Cab excitement.

  • Pastore

Was lucky enough to be in Piemonte last November and had some phenomenal wines there. I haven’t found very many 100% Nebbiolo wines to drink around here (Indiana), other than the Renato Ratti, which wasn’t bad. Love that you are focusing on these under-valued and under-appreciated wines. There is so much going on in that region right now!

Love the show. Keep ’em coming!

  • Just Jack

Great show. I have been waiting for a Nebbiolo special. In fact I think the entire Italian wine scene deserves a little more attention from the Thunder Show. Nice energy and a hidden gem with the Malvira. What more could we ask for than that?

  • XpensiveWino

Good show, back to basics! I love some Nebbiolo..especially at 20 bones.

    QOTD- 1993

I know this may sound like sacrilege, but I’ve been pretty excited about Round Pond’s Nebbiolo the last couple of years.

  • BP

Gary V, I’m a recent convert and have some questions:
How long were those bad boys opened before you tasted them?
Decanted first then back in the bottle for the show? (Y/N)
    Just pulled and poured?
If the latter, I’d luv to see a taste then a retaste after a 3 hour decant especially some of these tannic bruisers!

QOTD – 1969 – Where did my hair go? Oh my back!
And yes I did watch the Jets win the Super Bowl live on the tube (in B+W – crap!!!) it hurt. I was a Colts fan then.

  • QOTD: Graduated High School 2001… Never had Nebbiolo… Definitely picking up a couple of bottles this weekend to get to know this grape. I’ll let you know how it goes…

Side Note: This episode sent me down memory lane, Mc Hammer 2LTQ was the first CD I ever owned, and I still got it!

    Cheers!

  • QOD 1972

  • QOTD2: I have had a lot of Nebbiolo–I love Italian varietals the most so far–and this is one that is is my cellar. I like a lot of her selections:

  • just opened for 1-2 hrs is the norm, sometimes 3 but just opened! Good point and call on 3 if not 6 hrs!

  • yes there is something awesome about the basics!

QOTD 1: Since I’m german I never went to highschool. But I was born in early 1990. So if anyone wants to know the year I would have graduated: You do the math. 😉
QOTD 2: I’ve only had one so far and it didn’t really blow me away. But I’ll try more asap.

  • Not much Jack and I agree on italy!

  • 2002…

I ask this mostly out of a lack of experience – would the mouth-turning dryness of the first two wines (that seems typical of nebbiolo) soften up with age at all? Obviously, dryness is more a measure of RS than that of tannin, but I often hear talk of “dry tannins” in many tasting notes, and I wonder if this is actually the case and whether its subject to any change or development with time. GV? Vayniacs? Thanks.

Sure, I plan to have some nebbiolo. But my only one thus far was at the store event on 7/10.

  • tnx Pastore and pls keep commenting, it is the fuel for me to keep doing it!

  • I agree SS!

    73! Getting old here
I had the 05 Cigliuti Barbaresco Serraboella the other night and it was great! It may have been the only one I’ve ever had but I still gave it a 93.
You really had me going when you said Nebiolo was in Barbera wine. You kind of corrected it later but these euro wines are really confusing. Thanks for the fun facts on the Langhe, Piedmonte, Barolo and Barbaresco. It’s much more clear now. I think.

  • 🙂 thank u my friend and TSL pls keep the posts coming

  • sethsethy

“i never see big pens!!” haha.

qotd: i graduated in 2004, got into wine when i was 21 🙂

ive never had nebbiolo! every time i see a bottle its like $40 and i cant justify spending that much when im such a broke joe. if only i could find something good for around $20, that would be rockin..

    QOTD 1 1976
QOTD 2 1998 Nervi Gattinara — gotta love Gattinara!

I also enjoyed the Malvira very much when I had it 6 months ago, but not nearly as much as you, GV! (I scored it an 86)

  • You are welcome!
High School, huh! 1980, Music: Queen, Pink Floyd, ELO . Hair: long blonde, wierd but stylish then
Gary don’t like a cereal wine? I thought you loved cereal 😀 Will try a couple of Nebiolos this weekend, promise.
QOTD: Just had one but it didn’t get hooked for more Langhe Nebbiolo Fontanafredda 2008

  • JLVillacorta

I feel your pain. The only way I’ve been able to afford to gamble my money on things like that was to get about three or four of my friends together and split the costs of two or three more expensive bottles. You won’t be able to drink as much but you’ll have a good time with your friends enjoying wines (or beers) you wouldn’t otherwise try.

  • lisaupnorth

    QOTD #1: ’78 was great
QOTD #2: I think I have had a Nebbiolo or 2, but have a hard time remembering the names of European wines sometimes. (Can I blame that on my age??)

  • Anonymous

Pop that sucker and let us know how you like it! Looks like a good deal.

  • I love Nebbiolo. Great to see you touch on it…

My absolute fav is Produttori del Barbaresco Nebbiolo delle Langhe. It’s super delicious and around the $20 price point.

    Class of ’96!!!

    Enjoyed this episode.

QOTD – graduated in 1968 – yes I am an old fart, but an old fart that is really enjoying the journey of learning wine.

QOTD 2 – I know I have tried the wine but cannot locate my records of what nor when.

    Will try it again soon.

  • Produttori del Barbaresco Nebbiolo delle Langhe is the way to go!

  • Gary is wearing Polo shirts more. Business is good!

  • Dcaragher

GV – Good show, like the Nebexcitement! Definitely a wine that peeps should be drinking!

    QOTD: 2000!

  • sconway

agree with the Produttori del Barbaresco Nebbiolo. Also like Vietti Perbacco

  • QOTD: 89′. Not a fan of the reds so probably a pass on the Nebbiolo.

So Christopher, does that mean you were sporting “Mott”on Chops back in the day?
    ( I’m so sorry everyone. I just couldn’t help myself. 😛 )

Had my first Nebbiolo with dinner last Friday (inspired one of last week’s episodes), but oddly enough, it wasn’t from Italy – it was an 03 Martin & Weyrich Il Vecchio Reserve. I really enjoyed it quite a bit, and I was most impressed with the tart sour cherry finish. Looking forward to trying more.

  • Anonymous

looking forward to this….. have been trying to get into nebbiolos for some time.

  • StaceyA

    My first comment ever!! woo!
    QOTD 1: 2005

QOTD: I haven’t tried a Nebbiolo yet, but it is now on my list… along with many others that have made it there since i started watching WLTV.

QOTD to GaryV: I work in the cheese business and like to know about allll cheese and wine pairings. Have you ever paired cheese with a Nebbiolo? Yummy or not?

  • alright…gotta try the Nebbiolo. What would this go well with food wise? Anyone?

  • QOTD: 1987

Not sure if I’ve had a Nebbiolo, don’t think so. As with most of the shows I watch, I’m anxious to run out and seek this varietal out.

  • camira

    QOTD1: 1994

Nebbiolo!! Coming from an Italian restaurant, this is one of the grapes I talked most about. I like Damilano Nebbiolo, also Langhe. Thanks for talking about Langhe, and for bringing out the entry level wines that are easier to get my hands on. Can?t wait to try the Malvira!
    QOTD: 93.

  • NY Pete

    cool label on the langhe
let’s see what the wine does

I thought Kahuna was going to be on this show WTF ??

Was treated to a produttori del Barbaresco 2002 Langhe Nebbiolo along with a vertical of the 2007 past spring. Found the younger to be such a tannic monster but the 02 was drinking quite nicely. @ Mark Fitz… go for some good grilled beef with this.

  • NY Pete

how can a jersey guy not like springsteen? eh Chris?
