Nice show Homey. You really know your stuff Bro!!!! So many facts….lol I’ll have to try some of that. I like the old time dry wines.

QOTD: I think I would have graduated in 1979. If I stayed in school that is..lol Oh yeah, they just had my 30th reunion last year so I guess it was 79. And no, I didn’t go. Wish I did though, I would have loved seeing everyone I didn’t graduate with….lol

QOTD: I haven’t been super excited by a neb yet. I’ve had a few under $20 offers in the last month or so that were bleh despite my enthusiasm. I’ll keep looking though.

  • passion4wine

    Q1 – Graduated 1992
Q2 – Sunce (Sonoma County) made a very fun ’05 Nebbiolo. I still have a bottle at home. I think that’s what’s going with dinner tonight.

  • Mott

    Because he sucks.

  • You know you said Barbera at the beginning there, right? Just don’t want people picking up a Barbera and getting the wrong idea.

QOTD2: 2003 Travaglini Gattinara is the wine that really opened my mind to Nebbiolo, and is still one of my favorite wines.

  • NY Pete

    LMAO

  • Zino

Good to highlight Nebbiolo at these prices. Unlike Pinot Noir, it can often be very good at this level. The top end ones though, can be very ordinary young and show little sign of future greatness, yet somehow they develop into liquid gems. Your reference to Mott sounding like Mom made me think, maybe you should have your mother on the show some day, that would be interesting.

Great show gary. I’ve been wanting some barolos lately. Had a few in 05 in tuscany. Are prices getting better here in the states? Had a couple of nebiolos in the states, not loved any. I’d like to try that first one you tasted though.

Welcome! Great question. What cheese to try with Nebb?

  • QOTD:2002 is when I graduated
Good show, I’ve not had Nebbiolo but I will be sure to do so

QOTD #2: I’m not sure I’ve had a true Nebbiolo but I love Italian reds and can’t wait to stuff my face!

And his runnnnnnnnn continues!!! Way to add to the stunning run of “back to back to back classics”, GV.

  • Soapbox3

    @ 1 minute…”respectfully” should be “respectively”

I’m sure grammar means nearly as much as wine.

Okay, so I have a hard and fast rule that NO ONE under the age of 50 may utter the phrase, “Back in the day”. The logic for this is that “Back in the day” to you is YESTERDAY to us. “Back in the day” was when there were penny candy stores with 20-foot glass cases full of them. “Back in the day” meant 5-cent Neopolitan Three Musketeers bars that were twice the size of today’s. “Back in the day” meant NOT locking your house even when you went on vacation. The list continues for another 180 pages 🙂

    QOTD 1: 1964
QOTD 11: I don’t think that I have ever had a straight Nebbiolo

I had to re-watch the episode to remember QOTD1. Now, “Back in the day” I wouldn’t have had to do that.

  • your thoughts on Kovy and the voided deal? Lets talk hockey and Nebbiolo! I am going to start learning about football too… just so i can get pumped about the the Jets references.

  • I will be at my cellar space this weekend… I will fish out one of the bottles and crack. Will get back to you, dude. What wines have you been downing lately?

WTF gary?! Rerecord this episode and straighten your words out! Or soapbox could remove the stick….

There’s a reason that you feel that way. YOU ARE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Try a Nebbiolo from Lombardy where it’s called Chiavennasca

  • Wijntweet

Huh, Nebbiolo makes Barbera? I always thought Barbera was a varietal on it’s own…

  • NY Pete

the nhl should void all the contracts that are Kovy-like … iron fist Lou will work out a deal to keep Kovy a Devil for a long time.

  • Carilius Maximus

…84….Caparone from Paso Robles. One of the first in Cali as I understand it. Interestingly it sounds like it has similarities to all the wines tasted today. I wonder if they would sell some of their fruit. Big upside potential from this grape in Paso…

  • I’m a huge fan of the “Neb” and the first two look quite promising so I will try them out especiually at their price point. The Osvaldo was “tight” with lots of tannins is not my cup of wine since the only two things I like “tight” are a Peyton Manning pass to Reggie Wayne and well, I won’t get into the second one. That being said, good show, not great, since I was waiting with baited breath for an “announcement.”

QOTD #1: Shhhhhhhhh, 1970 Super Bowl Champions Baltimore Colts over Da Boys 😉
QOTD #2: Yes, not many but this one piqued my interest: Prunotto ?Occhetti?

    Cheers!

P.S. So who won da cheese? (Simpson cup question)

  • Whew, so I can say it. 🙂

  • Agree 😉

  • Crap! First one sold out already. 🙂

  • The purple shirt is hurting my eyes 😉
    QOTD1: 1988
QOTD2: Ironically, I just bought a Nebbiolo this afternoon… Karma dude!

    QOTD: ’74……vintage…
    Recently enjoyed a Vietti Nebbiolo.

  • Double zero graduation for me!

I wonder if the third wine had some tartaric acid added to it. Maybe they left the grapes on the vine to get the fake ripe fruit flavors and then they had to add the acid to compensate. Were those all 100% Nebbiolo?

I haven’t had a Nebbiolo that excited me yet. The ones I had didn’t have the complexity I like.

  • You’re right. I think Gary had a tongue slip and meant Barolo and Barberesco.

  • Yeah… it seems a little late for them to investigate all the Chicago deals or Luongo’s deal but I agree. Your thoughts on NJ thus far in the off-season? I think you should have gone after Martin… but you have some interesting pickups. I think you are right (long time)… he WILL be a great addition to NJ. Another reason for me to fly over there… to see a Devils game, Yo La Tengo and Wine Library.

QOTD #1: HS Grad in 1975. Mott! In ’79 we were enduring 3 Mile Island, gas lines, the Iranian Rev. & the US hostages being taken, the Village People and “YMCA;” Donna Summer was still hot, as was disco; the killer rabbit attacked Pres. Carter to the applause of many Americans; the Sonics actually won an NBA title posing the greatest evidentiary challenge to atheists ever; Barry Manilow was big, questioning God’s mercy; and, to my eternal shame, for a brief time in ’79 I actually liked Rod Stewart’s “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy?”…….

Funny thing Gary: when I first started watching this show I thought you were talking to your mom when you said “Mott” too. I didn’t take me too long to realize that you were actually talking to the one and only, the man, the myth, the legend, Christopher Mott but I thought it was funny you mentioned it today.

    QOTD1: 2006
QOTD2: I had a barolo last week that I was really into: Damilano Barolo 2004 was showing beautifully.

  • I love Donna Summer. I saw her live and she was amazing. Bring back the “good ole days.”

  • I LOVE the shirt. It shows his “creative” and “feminine” side and its not purple, closer to mauve.

  • Let’s hope. They must have had one case.

  • I’m an “Ovie” fan (Great 8) though Kovy is a stud.

    NEBBIOLO!!!

    QOTD 1) 2003
QOTD 2) I’ve had great experiences with Nebbiolo from Barolo, Barbaresco, and value in the form of Nebbiolo Langhe, as well. I should also mention GATTINARA as a lesser-appreciated region in Piemonte that produces GREAT Nebbiolo-based wines, but I really want to talk about an even more obscure region within Piemonte called:
    **LESSONA**
The wine that completely blew me away was the Sella Lessona DOC ?San Sebastiano allo Zoppo? 2005. This is an 80% Nebbiolo 20% Vespolina wine with elegance and power, and very well priced alongside comparable wines from the other big B’s in Piemonte.

PLEASE DO A GATTINARA / LESSONA EPISODE!! Cheers.

Not much experience with Nebbiolo (Little Fog?), but that’s why I like the thunder show, Discovering good inexpensive reds.

I’m really glad that BP asked about opening-breathing vs. decanting. I notice that in some episodes with guest winemakers, their wines are decanted. I even recall one episode where the ullage (?), level in the bottle was way down, again without explanation, and I wonder if the winemakers insist on this.
I often decant young cheap wine that’s a little off and find that it usually improves. On the other hand, I’m reluctant to do the same with old wine, at least without tasting it first.

    Another great show Gary.
