You have amply illustrated that while our long-term memory remains sharp, our short-term memory is the first to go!! Just another reason we get to say “Back in the day”… πŸ˜‰

  • QOTD: Never had a nebiolo but will be headed out to have one

  • QOTD1: 2003
QOTD2: Never done a Nebbiolo, but will now!

  • Alexandre-CF

Nebbiolo sometimes gets a little pricier, but can bring some old world taste.

Nice to have the My Little Ponies back at the ranch! They coordinate nicely with your shirt! πŸ˜‰
    QOTD: ’76
QOTD2: Hmm, don’t recall having any (other than Barolo). Next on our list, then!

2 years ago I tasted a 1967 Antonio Vallana e Figlio Piemonte Nebbiolo Spanna Traversagna that was AMAZING! I mean 40-freaking years old!
I wonder if there are modern equivalents of this wine, and if they are made similarly or have been “modernized”?

  • A dumb Rhein king

QOTD: I wasn’t supposed to graduate, the world was supposed to end that new years.

QOTD2: I may have had it once in a restaurant. Will I try it again? Of course! Once I’m done with my Mn wine kick this year I’ll find some.

  • 1995!

    Good stuff with the show.

QOTD: My buddy lived in Salerno, Italy and brought back some simple table red from the city. Nebiollo. Best and only that I’ve had. Def impressed with the varietal from that one experience.

    QOTD: ’02

QOTD2: Produttori del Barbaresco Langhe is usually alright. Vietti Perbacco is pretty good, and I seem to remember hearing somewhere that its actually declassified barolo unlike a lot of the Langhe and D’alba wines that come from vineyards outside of the Barolo DOCG area. However, if I’m not drinking barolo or barbaresco, I’m usually looking at DOCs in northern Piedmont like ghemme, gattinara, lessona, for example.

  • QOTD1: 1998

QOTD2: Plenty of great Barolos and Barbarescos, including a recent ’96 Borgogno Barolo Riserva. As for more under the radar stuff, Gattinara is always tasty, and Barolo Chinato as a digestif can’t be beat.

  • amgryger

The thing about Lessona, is that it was at one point a monopole entirely controlled by Sella. I believe that now the only other producer making anything in the Lessona DOC is Proprieta Sperino which is a made by Paola di Marchi of Isole e Olena.

    2007 baby!

I actually talked to you on the show 2 days after I was in Barolo. I would say the most interesting 100% Nebbiolo was the Chinato I had. Its fortified and infused with quinine. I had never had it and it was truly a unique wine that I don’t think many people are aware of.

Wow. I was riveted to the screen, rather than reading posts while listening. You killed it, crushed it, and nailed it w/ exposure to what was a former corner of Barbaresco. By 2000, I’d encountered examples of Langhes, which ($20, then) would give a run for the money against the climbing outrageous pricing on (limited production) Barbs, and Barolos (one of my 1st loves in wine, over 20 years ago). That there are $20 examples ten years later, that are worthy, is more than noteable!

Q – ’79! just like Mottster. (When I 1st discovered WLTV, 2-08, I thought you’d cried out “Ma!… Ma!” & thought – whatadouche, w/ his ‘Ma videotaping his podcasted opinions!)
I remember one thing in ’79. That the insanely hot Polish-American that became my gf was the St. Pauli girl. (the previous one, on the label). to a tee.

  • Anonymous

QotD – back then – in 2000, ’97 Fontanabianca Nebbiolo Langhe. $20. From there, it was GO!

  • I got all wound up and watched like 5 episodes today, and you have been on a nebbiolo kick for years now. I don’t think anyone can watch that many episodes without a serious craving for some vino so I had to pick up some goodies, and I must agree with you that the varietal is ready to explode. I picked up an official looking ’07 nebbiolo from Rivetto and it is/was outstanding. I also had to keep it real and I snapped up two bottles from you that should be here in a few days.

Side note: Most blogs about wine probably are not for a lack of comments. Lurkers definitely loosen up after a few glasses πŸ™‚

  • QOTD: graduated 2006
can’t think of a nebiolo that rocked my world… but i will find one

  • KeithBlank

Do you know one of the signs of getting older?

When your back goes out more than you do!

“…Back in the day….”, I had some Barolo’s and such, but not just Nebbiolo. Sounds interesting. Thanks for the show.

QOTD: 1976, the Bicentennial Birthday Bash Year!

And yes my friends, in the 60’s, 15 cents could give you an entire days’ worth of penny candy, to romp all day in the woods with.

Nebbiolo, well 2 out of 3 ain’t bad. A little worried about the bitter beer face issue. Would aging them longer help or not?

QOTd: 1963. I have had a couple of nebbiolo wines in the long pass but can’t recall if I liked them or not.

QOTD 1: 2005, had 996 in graduating class – my brother, 2012, will have over 1,000 (suburb of Dallas)

QOTD 2: No, but hard to spend $20-40 on a wine that could be good or meh.

  • 2006, 95 in my graduating class. Kalyra Winery makes a great Nebbiolo from Santa Ynez, CA.

  • HugeneOR

Loved this episode. QOTD: My dad gave me an ’85 (my birth year) Produttori del Barbaresco that he had been saving (along with a Lynch-Bages and a Graham’s Port of the same year) for my 21st birthday. The Lynch Bages was way over my head at the time, though I enjoyed it, but the nebbiolo rocked my socks. I haven’t had the privilege of tasting very much fully mature wine since then, so that bottle is still in my top 5. Incidentally, my high school graduation was in 2004, another great year for Piedmont, and I have an ’04 produttori sitting in my basement waiting. The best producers ever? Certainly not. But we have history, so….

  • QOTD 1: 2003 with 198 in the class, got into Zeppelin in 2007, I think.
    QOTD 2: Eventually.

Mott like Hallucinogens much? … ” I remember Pink Floyd”

PLUS some Rain Man to boot … graduating class of 864

    Mott wins again.

QOTD the Nebbiolo upstairs at WL party that was hinted at being a Cindy special…

    You just made my night,
cat profile pick + candy all day in the woods X (bicentennial anything) = awesome!

  • Great timing of this episode.. I’ve been curious about barolos lately and last Sunday asked a guy at the local wine store about them. He told me that (in his opinion) barolos are only worth drinking if they’ve aged 10+ yrs., and advised me to start with straight nebbiolo in order to understand the grape. Can’t wait to try some.

QOTD: Class of ’81 – Fresno, CA
    QOTD: Not yet!

  • Loved Donna Summer and still love Rod Stewart’s “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy?” but will never admit it (except here)… πŸ™‚

  • Interesting that the last wine scored so poorly, compared to the second one.

    QOTD1: I graduated high school in 1988.

QOTD2: LA Cetto Nebbiolo 2006, had it before and it was good, although it is rich and heavy on the palate with leathery, tobacco goodness there is a hint of berries, quite nice actually.

Also like Barbarescos, specially if they “Baroleggia”.

    Thanks!

Fun stuff all around the blog tonight.

    Boy, you are old!

When I was a kid, the expression was “don’t trust anyone over 30”.

Now that I’m old, my expression is more like “don’t trust anyone who doesn’t remember JFK getting shot!”(and exactly where they were).

Just kidding John, and everyone. All in fun.

Nice to hear someone talking about the truly good ole’ days!

  • Yip

    QOTD1: 2009

’73, huh? That explains you knowing about the “In The Court Of The Crimson King” album…
    ;}

  • Allan

    Right up my alley…..!

And because of that, GREAT SHOW! AGAIN! πŸ˜‰

BUT i have to correct you G, you said in the beginning that nebbiolo was responsible for Barbera, which is wrong, Barbera IS the Barbera grape.

Nebbiolo is my favourite red grape hands down.

Qotd: 2003 Tenuta Carretta Barbaresco Garassino DOCG.

  • Anonymous

Good show and as you pointed, very good grape. I adore it.

QOTD. Elio Grasso Casa Mate. Yesterday I drank Sito Moresco by Gaja. Amazing.
