  • BP

    QOTD: Southern Rhone

Good to see the couch back.

  • PeterT

QOTD: How about tasting LBV Ports?

  • Anonymous

Glad to see the couch is back GV.
QOTD: All I want next week if for you to keep bringing the thunder. Everything you do is gold man KEEP IT UP.

  • RealBadDude

I would really like to see another episode involving spirits…some of my favorites from the past are the Mezcal and Scotch shows.

  • Anonymous

    Laid back!!!! Nice!!!!!

QOTD: Go down in the catacombs of the Wne Librarys deep dark cellars and bring up some verticals….maybe Bordeaux’s or some heavy duty Cab’s….. but first, call me so I can come taste them with you. 🙂

Maybe do a tasting at Sasha’s cellar as we have been waiting ……and waiting…..and WAITING!!!!!!

  • Anonymous

Yeah…call me if you do the Scotch show…I’ll bring a bottle or two of my stash!!!!!

  • A comfy couch yields a comfortable show? Thanks for the great week GV and M!

Qotd: Maybe you could focus on wines from Oregon? Which wines would be worthwhile to pursue as a consumer. Which Pinots bring the thunder? Or, how about a week dedicated to Champagne. Grower vs House Style… and really bring the thunder by trying vintage grower against house (1995 La grande dame) style vintage champagne. Or strictly grower champagne at different price points. Just a thought.

    Sounds very meh.
QOTD: Only taste available wines so we can taste them too!

  • Anonymous

    Hey GV,

Why do you think the beer cap never made it to wine bottles?

    QOTD: More beer.

really great epi gary. Nice and tight i liked it.

QOD:loving the blind taste offs. I think thats great. Maybe an episode where the wine is already poured and you have to guess which wine is which. Throw in a box wine or something

  • Anonymous

I have seen some in expensive prosecco sold that way

  • TitanicJack

Love that the Friday couch is back. QOTD: Would like you to review some of the Cameron Hughes wines like Lots 172, 182, 189 and 209, if possible. Thanks.

    05 ? Pomum Shya Red

  • The Couch!!

  • Big Fella

    Australian cool climate wines.

  • Dbedini

Gary, that Prosecco is a Frizzante, not a Spumante, so by definition it will be less fizzy. Meanwhile, I like the focus on broadening the palate, but i agree with others that it’s nice if the wines you taste are available to us, so we can enjoy them.

  • Btkenney

Great episode. I reach for prosecco when it’s time for an inexpensive bubbly. I like the Mr. Rogers salute with the tying of the new balances at the beginning.

QOTD: I say spend some time revisiting controversial wines from popular episodes past. Or, a little south american wines.

  • Kaptainreboot

QOTD: Why not try some Meeker wines out like thier Cab Franc or Petit Verdot. Would love to know what you think of them.

Beans how you’re not pulling for the Jets this week, maybe you can root for my Chiefs?
qotd…maybe not next week…but, later, more shows “on location” at the vineyards and wineries?

  • NP

QOTD answer: Northern Rhone wines, specifically Hermitage.

  • QOTD: double-blind brown bags (i.e. GV doesn’t know beforehand the region/varietals he’s tasting)

Re screwcap sparklers, what about crown-capped sparklers? I’m seeing those more often, especially from down-under. Given, champagne spends life under crown cap they are at least more authentic. And they make a good popping noise when opened.

    Gary,

One thing you’ve never done a show about in almost 1000 episodes is LBV Port. I think it would be a great way to spread some info and appreciation for some excellent wines.

  • Mad Hatter

My thoughts exactly! I’d be interested to get gary’s take on the 1995 Smith Woodhouse LBV that WL carries.

  • Love me some Prosecco. Can’t to hunt that one out.

QOTD: Former Eastern Bloc Wine Week: Austria, Romania, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and etc.

    How’s that for a theme?

  • bigeasyfromjeezy

QOTD: BANDOL ROUGE…brings it to us

  • Anonymous

    Great to see the couch.
QOTD: Double blind. I would love to see how you analyse your way to guessing region, grape and year. Perhaps get Sacha to pick them, that would probably give you just a little hint.

  • Anonymous

    Excellent idea also!

  • Jcab25

QOTD: Portugal episode somewhere in there. I second the Double Blind suggestion. Maybe some Spain action. Also in the future, perhaps taking a big shot at the 2007 California Cabs that Wine Spectator just heaped enormous praise upon.

  • Biznas333

I would like you try a malbec rose on the show. Also maybe some washington state syrah wine shows

  • Biznas333

    see Episode #696

  • Roll out some organic wines and maybe some wines not “officially” labeled organic – because they didn’t want to deal with all the regs to get the label….

Roll Sasha out on the show to. Let’s get some political questions 😉

  • QOTD: Would love to see a Clare/Eden Australian Riesling show… Grosset, Henschke, Tim Adams, Mount Horrocks, etc. They’re some of my favourite wines that I wish more people would try.

  • Anonymous

QOTD: I like the idea of Portuguese wines or maybe some ports from Spain.

  • badabingmike

Wines that you brought in to the store and were shocked of either the lack of interest or overwhelming interest, staff current favorite picks. Barolo, meritage, claret.

  • MB

QOTD : How about adding a seasonal theme to the tastings next week. Given it is Fall and the weather is changing, taste for wines is changing to richer more complex wines that go with richer and more complex food. On each day, pick a region with wines that typically pair with Autumn food like Northern Rhone, Bordeaux, Piedmont, Ribero or Rioja etc, and from each region pick two wines – an established “leader” known for quality at a premium price point, and another up and coming wine that punches above its weight and delivers the thunder at a more afforable price. Taste them blind side by side, score each wine and see which wins in each case – the established wine or the up and comer. Preferably wines that are available in Wine Library now for us to drink too.

  • 1776

QOTD – How about a show for newbies to wine. Think basic concepts that you take for granted like, how long does a opened bottle of red/white last, which wines should be chilled, what is proper serving temp, which wines are dry, sweet, fruity, what do you mean by tannins and acidic?

  • NY Pete

    hey hey

  • NY Pete

this show should be called quickie friday … 😛

  • NY Pete

    where’s Phil Oxera?

  • SniffySmith

Great show Gary, the laid back couch returns!! Ahh prosecco, my bubbly of choice.

QOTD: Halloween episode idea: instead of wines with “spooky” names, why not a show about wines the general public might be “afraid” to try? They see them in the stores and wine shops, don’t know much about them, don’t bother to ask, and stick with thier cabernet or chardonnay instead. Let’s expand some palates!

  • Luca

QOTD – continuing your theme of looking to the future – how about a focus on English wines (don’t laugh) since we’ll probably have the climate of mid-france in a generation or so (if global warming continues). There are a few decent English wines already and it would be interesting to think what might be possible with slightly better weather

  • BobE

QOTD: Pair Gourmet Library’s Parmigiano-Reggiano with a fully dry Lambrusco ? not with a semi-sweet version.

  • TLove

LURKER ALERT! (I’ve seen probably 200 episodes so far without posting a comment, so hello all!)

Gary, I was in the Republic of Georgia, the birthplace of wine, in the Caucasus this past summer. I would really like to see you tackle Georgia’s sun-baked and very unique semi-sweet reds (Stalin’s favorite) and perhaps one of their attempts at dry red styles as well. Their dry whites are actually quite nice. They remind me of Hungarian and Italian Toh-Kai.

Great week, btw. I really enjoy your Vernacchia and Valpolicella shows as its great to see someone trying to bring attention to styles unfamiliar to most wine drinkers.

  • Latour90

The Proseco looked a little flat, no bubbles.

QOTD: I like the double blind idea. Kinda like they did in the movie Bottle Shock at the bar. Don’t get me started on that movie, totally dissed Mike Grgich. Anyway, maybe K Murph can throw in a ringer too.

  • Anonymous

QOTD — I guess I should give up on your doing Madeira, so how about some Austrian & Hungarian reds?

  • Anonymous

    Yay for laid back Fridays!
QOTD: I’m not sure you’ve managed to do a full week of anything yet. Yes, you may consider that to be a challenge!
Given that the weather is turning colder, at least for some of us, how about a week of port? Then the following week, because the weather is turning warmer for others, a week of seasonally appropriate wine for the southern hemisphere?

  • J-Dub (formerly known as ND!)

Ok since I’ve noticed an “NP” signature in the comments, I’m dropping ND and assuming the more well-known internet moniker “J-Dub” 🙂

QOTD: More bubbles–it’s been a while since we saw much of anything there, right? Also am still interested in learning more about some lesser known varietals eg teroldego, as mentioned in this week’s valpolicella episode!
