    Welcome!
Coincidence?! At our August tasting, our hosts offered Tsindali Dry White and Khvanchkara Semi-Sweet Red for the Georgian selections after a recent trip. I agree with your take on them.

QOTD: Gary I’d love to see you cover burgundy in some way. I think it is a tricky category and would love to find some moderate values in the region if that exists.

LAID BACK COUCH! LAID BACK COUCH! LAID BACK COUCH!
LAID BACK COUCH! LAID BACK COUCH! LAID BACK COUCH!
LAID BACK COUCH! LAID BACK COUCH! LAID BACK COUCH!

  • QOTD: Gary I would love to see you cover some wines from unexpected areas (maybe Virginia), I know you went to VA a while back so maybe bring that idea back and look at some different up and coming areas of the country and the world. ALSO would love to learn a little more about getting involved in the wine industry! I’m a CKC and really could benefit from some advice

  • Purplejuicebruce

    Amador Co. Zinfandels !!!!!

  • Tom T.

Good to see the laid back couch back on the show. And as a Giants fan I am worried about the game with the Cowboys. The ‘boys are a bit desperate for a win and could come out all fired up. QOTD – port, champagne, sparkling Shiraz, Hooters girls….. 🙂

  • Zack

you should do some shows that cover some lesser known regions, New York, Ohio, Arizona, Switzerland, Austria, Portugal, Chile, etc…

  • Missatiejacket

I’d really like to finally see an entire episode dedicated to Madeira. You’ve only ever reviewed 1 Madeira and it was a Rainwater (boring). It surprises me that you would almost completely ignore such a historically relevant category despite having done many episodes on far more obscure wines. WL currently has the Rare Wine NY Malmsey and Cossart’s 15 Yr Bual. Maybe you could send someone out to get a drier style and a vintage Madeira (could be 2 wines or the same one) to cover some other bases. I’ve been asking every so often for a LONG time. please?

Laid Back Friday! My chair is Laid Back! Nice tight show. Always looking for more. Nice to see the couch back. A little to short, would have been nice to compare with another sparkling wine. All in all, good effort.

QOTD: Maybe have a day with some German wines. Maybe even from countries like Hungary, South Africa or wine from Oregon. Always love the guests. Love the insight given.

  • Paul Sheridan

QOTD: Washington State – All week. (or at least get some Washington wines in there). Gotta root for the home team.

Re: Giants, sorry Gary, you’re wrong on this one. The Tony/Wade mopey head hang (TM) will be in full effect Monday night. Leadership > Talent.

QOTD: Everyone is asking for lesser known wines, how about Chinese wines? Or Brazilian? Also, you’ve done hotels, so why not airlines? I’d be interested to see you shoot an in-flight episode. Bring some thunder to the mile high club!Last idea: Wines that pair with Halloween candy.

RUSSIA! GV, the home country! Nostrovia!

  • Erik Wait

QOTD: Do a tour of California, wines from a different AVA every day OTHER THAN Napa or Sonoma such as Monterey, Sierra Foothills, Santa Barbara, Paso Robles and Lodi.

I got it, you could jump a shark!

Definitely want to try that Prosecco, thanks!

QOTD: You’ve done vintage ports a bunch of times, how about doing a nice 10 or 20 year tawny, or maybe even a Colheita?

  • Quick one. I’ve enjoyed. Just wanted to mention that Prosecco has almost 3 times less pressure than a bottle of champagne and usually there are no surprises when you open these bottles. Unless they’re really hot & shaken. People around shouldn’t be scared:) So it was pretty much OK that nothing happened:) Don’t remember having a sparkling with a screw top. It’s the future for many airlines and fast food joints I believe.
QOTD: Wines from the former USSR would be much appreciated. I understand that it’s not the first time someone asks you that, I’ll be just glad to hear your opinion as always.
    Respecting your way,
    Alexey.

You did it! You did it! The couch returns!!! Woohoo!!!

    QOTD: something CKC oriented!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • SniffySmith

Gary did wines on a plane – see episode #651

  • ??, ? ????? ??? – I just wrote I love purple chickens didn’t I? ;P

    GARY!!!!
    xoxoxo

I enjoy Prosecco…I like Riondo Rose…And I dont categorize it the same as “wine”…Its seems to be something that I have before wine…Its very light..festive..and a crowd pleaser.. I like to just have it out, served in champagne flutes as soon as friends arrive..lets face it..bubbles make life fun! LOL

QOTD: ME? LOLOLOL The holidays are approaching, how about Wine that goes best with stress! 🙂
    love ya Gary

  • WineWoman

Also did wines with candy bars.

  • Don’t you mean Poland? You have a Warsaw don’t you. 😉 Wait…and a Peru? Goshen? and Portland!!!! Your state is funny. ;P

  • RussNJ

QOTD: VERTICAL TASTINGS!! I love(!) vertical tastings! Always fun to go to a winery just as the latest vintage is released since they usually have plenty of last year’s vintage still available to try. Do it!

    Or,

More double blind tastings! Fun, fun, fun!

  • WineWoman

Some more food or cheese pairings with the wine, wines that don’t pair well with food, other varietals from Oregon such as Zin and sparklers.

  • OH! RAND! How about a bring a bottle of sparking wine party!!! Are you listening Team WL?

    😀

  • Anonymous

If you shake the bottle up first, more will happen when you open it!!! Ha! …
it will also have more bubbles 😉

QOTD: 2007 CDP/Southern Rhone show (I guess you guys may not have many bottles left in the shop though)
Also, please talk more about the dynamics of the wine biz. How does wine get from vineyard to shelf? There are some middle people involved and it is pretty confusing. This is particularly important as the house bill (HR5034) is all in the news and threatens to change the wine world (and decimate your business). Change the wine world GV! Help educate and motivate people about this crap proposition.

  • Cam

How about some Paso Robles reds? ie:Saxum…

  • norcalking

Wow. Sparkling wine with a screw cap. The bottle doesn’t even look right.
You should of compared that to the Sopphia in the pink can with the attached pink straw.
    Very difficult to get past.

    QOTD: Pinot Blanc

    Have a good weekend.

  • Lancastersl

How about a sonoma county week. Each day can do a different varietal-Zinfandel,Cabernet,Pinot, Chardonnay, and Sparkling wine

  • You didn’t:)! You just wrote “I’m loving it”. Are u a fan of McDonald’s?:) with purple chickens it would sound like: “? ????? ?????????? ??????”.

  • Globex

hey, haven’t heard the “whether they like or not” closing in quite a while… I like that it came back. A sparkling wine rated 87+ points for under $10, I don’t care if it came in an aluminum can… a rating like that for that price makes it a no-brainer to me!

QOTD: I like the introductions of varietals not common here in the U.S. I like hearing about terroir. And I miss your dad and his pairings with a good sandwich!! Big day tomorrow for my LSU, but I’m afraid Auburn might deliver them the thunder giving LSU their first defeat this year (I hope I’m wrong!).

  • Anonymous

You want to see him drink the CostCo Zin don’t you?
I must admit that I’ve had it, and as the kid’s say “it doesn’t suck” (esp for $12)

  • Marianne

recently toured Charlottesville area wineries, and enjoyed them immensely. wines were good, and excellent QPR, tasted better to us than many higher priced California varietals.

  • NY Pete

you should do a show with SS and the Big K.

  • Scot McLeland

I would like to see you review some wines from your homeland if there are any worth reviewing. Belarus is an interesting place in history and some background in today’s wine from there would be very interesting.

  • Eli

Good show. Great week. I loved Peter Weygandt. He was so chill and knowledgeable.

For next week, you should go nerd. Esoteric. Greek wines, Lebanese wines, Croatian wines, dry Hungarian wines, Bierzo, Austrian reds, and reds/whites from the Jura.

My second choice is more brown paper bags.

Or a vertical would be fund.

  • Jhart44

QOTD: Can’t get enough Portuguese reds….. How about testing the ballyhooed 2007 California cabs?….. How about a vertical of something?…..

  • Hahahaha! I was trying to say I love what your saying. Ba-gock! Or ????????? ?????????? 😛

  • Suzixa

correct me if i’m wrong, but isn’t the popping sound bruise the sparkling wine?
how about you go head to head in the wine world (brown bag style) with whoever the jets are playing, i.e. florida/miami wine vs. ny/nj wines, etc.
    you rock by the way.

  • Nick Garcia

Gary, the chair rocks…it’s like your Alice in Wonderland and shrank! LOL If you can do an episode next week for us wine newbies on how to actually do a proper tasting, that would be cool.
    Later,
    Nick Garcia

  • noshooz

Agreed! My wife and I toured three Charlottesville-area wineries in August and loved them so much we took home three and a half cases! Viognier reigns supreme in whites and Merlot and Cab Franc in the reds.

  • K is for Kate

I found it amusing how cautiously you unscrewed the cap on that Prosecco. I don’t think it should be any more dangerous than opening sparkling water. What made me nervous was my first Prosecco that I had to open with a corkscrew!

QOTD: I agree with some others that it is time for some “Other 46” action again. I’ve spent a few weekends in Michigan lately and there is some very good Riesling coming from the Leelanau and Old Mission Peninsulas, and I know you’ve carried some at WL in the past, but the only one I could find you tasting in previous episodes was St. J from the Lake Michigan AVA. They’re also growing all sorts of hybrids that it would be fun to see on the Thunder Show.

I was also disappointed to find that you had an episode with 6 wines from Virginia and none of them were made from the Norton grape. I’d love to see Virginia and Missouri face off in a Norton battle.

Expanding that to worldwide lesser-known wine growing regions, I would also love to see a show on wines from the former Soviet Republic of Georgia.

loved the ep. i wonder if the screwtops will affect the aging of champagne, because that is fickle business i hear.

qotd: A quick tour through wines of the Languedoc-Roussillon area, it’s the largest wine producing area in the world, but i think it might be the least understood/experienced or maybe even overlooked by the US market.

  • Anonymous

How about ’09 German Riesling? It’s supposed to be a doosy of a vintage!

  • I think it’s important to mention that this is a Frizzante not a Spumante, I’m not sure if the spumante is doable in screw top. Salute!

  • Vincentscudder

QOTD: I just did a wonderful blind tasting of cheap vs expensive mendoza malbecs and the majority of people prefered the less expensive wine. This blind cheap vs expensive idea should be the theme of next weeks episodes.
Ps. Love the show, keep it up!

  • Champagne in soda bottles?

QoTD: I would love a show on mouvedre/monastrell or good ol petit verdot. It’s been a while.
P.S. Where are portuguese wines at the moment. Kind of off my radar. My local shop doesn’t even have any.

  • PS Love the return of the laid back couch.

  • Very good shows this week…the couch is always cool too. Thanks GV.

QOTD: Compare the taste & style of the “red” wines of Portugal – from it’s three main red wine producing regions. Do one 3 wine show with a red from the DAO, a red from the Douro and a red from the Alentejo regions. Or, do one show on each region over three episodes.
