    top?

  • NY Pete

    hey hey

  • Holy Crap! We’re gonna need a bigger boat!

  • NY Pete

    what a frackin’ pimp … 😛

  • Half bottles are an EXCELLENT idea especially for people who are just getting into wine, problem is a lot of wine stores just don’t carry quality half bottles.

  • Right on Gray!!! Nice episode… hope the domino affect stayed away… looking forward to the RED episode…

QOTD: As I like RED and the Wife likes WHITE, half-bottles are always a nice play when it’s just the two of us for dinner…

  • Lise

Like the idea of half bottles. Sharing with a someone is always fun. Not real crazy about the tiny bottles for only a taste, but maybe a half bottle.

  • Sarah

Loved the speed tasting. Cool business concept.

QOTD: I love half bottles! My husband is away from home two nights a week so I keep them on hand so I don’t have to open a full bottle for myself.

  • great episode Gary. you should’ve tasted the Roussanne and just not scored it. It’s Tim’s favorite!

QOTD: I buy some half bottles here and there but generally Heather and I don’t have a problem finishing a full bottle even on a Tuesday night…

  • Anonymous

    Fun speed tasting!

QOTD: I’ve actually never purchased a half bottle, but I like the idea in theory.

  • NY Pete

    375’s … meh

  • Great episode! Little bottles somehow did make the show go faster… kind of felt like speed dating. Not that I would know, of course.

QOTD – Half bottles are great – a very convenient way to taste some premium stuff when a) there’s not much wine drinking company around, and b) you’re on a budget. Problem is that most shops will rarely carry more than a handful of 375’s… I should not complain though, as we have a number of stores in the NY area (including WL) whose selection is not insignificant in size and scope.

  • I’ll be watching USTREAM Gary!

  • Hotspur75

Didn’t like it. Pure over-the-top BUSINESS stuff. And, guys: These aren’t half bottles, these are half-half-half-half bottles overpriced. Gimme a break. Please let’s get back to wine! Otherwise – good job

wow, tasting room is on to something. I put in an order to try a tasting pack. Half bottles are all around great. They don’t make me drink less but I get to try more wines in one night. Its like having a great by the glass selection at a restaurant, wine tasting and a meal without breaking the bank.

Holy wine bottle Batman!!! WOW…. that is my kind of table. I would have had a First Class seat brought in from a plane to do this and I would have brought up the table from the arm rest and did the tasting on there.
QOTD: I love half bottles……because I use one with a regular bottle when one bottle just isn’t enough, but two botlles is too much. Or if I am eating alone.
Good luck with this venture Homey

  • wild way to come back this week. 1/2 bottles – ehh ….don’t think about ’em much. I guess might be good if it’s a small group and you want to have several diff wines to taste. so far off the radar for most peeps, me included.

are the margins higher or lower for retailers?

The show was fun to watch but I don’t know if I would want a pack of 50 ml tasters. I’d be mad if I loved it and couldn’t find it. They’d be fun to sneak to long little league games but I don’t want to start doing that. Not where I see myself going.

    QOTD1: meh
QOTD2: I don’t buy 375 ml bottles and they generally sit and collect dust at my local PLCB store. We have a Cuviason pinot noir that I want to try at 9.99 for 375 ml but I decided not to bother. The one half bottle that is flying off the shelf right now is the Kim Crawford Sauv Blanc at only 5.99 or 6.99. That’s a better value than the 750 ml which is $17. Still I didn’t buy it. Maybe I will.

  • Yes, you are changing the wine world and I must say, this episode floated my boat like a young, svelte blonde. Man this was fun and since I’m a Fess Parker Wine of the Month Club Member, I was hoping you loved the Ashley’s Chard as I do.

QOTD #1: Yes, by all means do a ustream tasting of a GV pack and we need the T’giving pack soon.
QOTD #2: I can’t find enough splits since I’m the only one in the house that drinks wine. I would buy a hundred of these tasting wines. Variety is everything right?

    Cheers!

P.S. I realize you have already tasted the reds but hoping you pick up the Fess Parker Syrah around 11 o’clock in your reach.

    GO RANGERS!

  • Jrouss

QOTD: Love the idea of being able to follow along with the tasting, especially since this is a tasting pack and not just a separate bottle that I usually have with dinner.

  • Wilwrk4pez

Great show today. Can’t wait for sampling of reds. QOTD: 375 ML bottles are great for anyone drinking alone. My wife hates reds and I hate whites so half bottles fill the bill.

  • I believe everyone here realized these are “tastings” and not half bottles. “Get back to wine”? What are all those bottles filled with? I believe Mott gave 750ml prices. 🙂

  • This was an awesome episode. Great opening shot!

QOTD: Liked the idea of tasting along with ya. Could be interesting.

QOTD2: I like splits but will not seek them out.I often feel that the value is not there so I might as well drink and save a standard format bottle. I am beginning to itch for the first magnum or jeroboam play as my cellar grows.

Question for Gary: How does one pour a major sized bottle like a Nebuchadnezzar or Methuselah? It seems like a tough procedure.

  • elron

    Now, that’s what I’m talking about….

I agree with wine crazy! Love the table!

  • agourmetrelationship

Tasting bottles are a really interesting idea and i am definitely interested, do they ship to Jersey?
QOTD – i like half bottles for BYO variety, using a different wine for each course (and for after dinner wines too).

  • DaveAll

wow. airplane size bottles. a LOT of bottles. interesting concept. probably won’t make it. but hey, who knows. smile. So they literally uncork, and rebottle? very interesting idea. Wait, I’m saying “interesting” as much as you did… yikes. Interesting, ugh? AHHH!
I think you should have shot them from the bottle, just to slump dog it a little. ugh?
Really… good show, interesting (ah!) concept, loved it.
QotD: nah. Tainted by Niagara Ice wines that use this size so they can still demand high price. So I’m turned off by little bottles.

  • john fasc

great show. if you guys get a plethora of napa vineyards, this will be a huge hit.

QOTD: 375s – not into ’em. if we (i mean “I”) can’t finish the bottle then i’m intrigued to find out how it evolves over night for breakfast. a half would never survive. the mini’s from the show are more for the concept of tasting.

  • Hotspur75

I know, but judging from some comments here, that notion didn’t come across.
Now, good wine should be tasted with a development factor. So, in this regard this isn’t “real” or “serious”. Know what I mean?

  • Alex T

Funny how you didn’t mention the Pats having a share of the best record in the NFL.

    QOTD 1: yes
QOTD 2: still prefer 750ml bottles

  • Anonymous

QOTD: Love splits either to try a wine or drink in a night. As a marketing ploy, especially in this economic time, I would think that wineries should introduce wines in splits at an attractive discounted price (1 time only) to get consumers to try their wines hoping for repeat sales of 750ml.

  • Anonymous

Cradles are almost always used. Don’t mean to step on your toes Gary.

  • Fun ep. Go Pack!

  • WineWoman

Great opportunity to try several wines at a time. Loved the opening shot with tons of bottles on the tabel.
QOTD: Live Ustream tasting sounds like fun.
QOTD 2: I used to buy splits because then there wouldn’t be any leftover. I definitely would buy Champagne or sparkling wine in splits. I think you might not get a true sampling of the wine in the smaller-size bottle, but still a great way to get a fairly good representation of what the wine is like and you didn’t have to pay the 750ml price tag.

  • Anonymous

I’ve ordered from here, it’s a cool concept. Great to hear your behind it as well. Will be getting more .

Now if you can do outside CA as well, that would be awesome.

  • Cubatobaco (Ray)

I’m digging the show! When I received the email the other day from Cork’d, I was excited to get to the site. After seeing the choices, I was a little disappointed, but then again, I had not heard of half of them. Now tha tyou have offered a tasting, maybe I’ll pick up a sampler. But, I think I will wait until you pick your 6. QOTD #1: Count me in on the Ustream!

  • ChrisV

    Nice idea TastingRoom has.

QOTD: I love it when there are half bottles of wine at restaurants. My girlfriend doesn’t drink wine so if there aren’t half bottles when we eat out, I either have to get wines by the glass, which is expensive and generally the wines aren’t very interesting, or pound a whole bottle by myself and feel like an alco.

  • Violetruby

Awesome concept, definitely want to check that out and buy the Gary V. pack when it comes out. U-stream would be cool.

I haven’t bought many half-bottles, but I love the idea. There should be a bigger selection in stores. It makes buying a more expensive wine more approachable and I don’t feel as put back if the wine isn’t my style, or I may be more apt to purchase a 750ml bottle if I know I like it.

  • cweidler

I disagree; the reason you see people talking about half bottles here is because that was a QOTD (Question of the Day) from Gary, not because we all believe these are half-bottles.

As for not being “real”, I don’t know exactly how to respond to that. These are the same wines from the 750ml bottles, repackaged into 50ml sampling bottles; doesn’t get much more authentic than that. And Gary did disclose that he was involved, so I don’t see the problem in it as long as we know that going in.

QOTD: I am starting to get more into half bottles, mainly due to the fact that I like to try a bunch of different wines rather than stick to any one brand, but don’t want to drop 750ml price on something I’m not sure about; if the wine sucks and it’s a 375 it hurts less to dump. 🙂

  • Writebrain101

Great show. Great that you are behind it. Great ideas. QOTD: Half Bottles are great – I would purchase more wine if more were available as I generally am drinking wine on my own when I do.

  • CARose

GV! This is a killer concept and one who’s time has come. My wife and I both love the idea, especially when considering the many, many times we have purchased regular 750ml bottles only to find that we just didn’t like the wine. This will allow us to try many different wines without the risk. Count us in!

  • Anonymous

The Tasting Room is a great idea, I look forward to your selections. It gives you a chance to taste some $40 to $50 wines with out feeling bad if it sucks.
QOTD: I only buy desert wines in half bottles, other wise they never get finished.

  • Very cool show and very cool idea. I will be purchasing a few of these for gifts and myself.

  • Anonymous

AAAAAHHHHHHH THE THUNDER!!!!!!!!!!!! I was starting to get the shakes. This was a fun show and enjoyed the little bottles. I think your right that this may be something that could take off, wine tasting for $25-30 bones. Great job Gary and thanks for coming back strong.

QOTD: Splits, only at the restaurant. Don’t drink a full bottle at dinner and a split is perfect, but splits in general not a fan. Enjoy the 750ml for home, party and special occasions consumption.

  • Anonymous

I just opened the page to see gary behind a see of wine bottles. I like it. I think he should do a random wine week where a hundred bottles are put in a rack and a few a randomly selected each day.

  • great show and would love to randomly show up on a day that you were doing that and join in. What fun.

QOTD – regarding splits, I would say probably only on something that I really enjoy and my wife isn’t a big fan of (and is expensive).

  • Hotspur75

All right, I’m a little embarrassed now, cause it shows I didn’t watch through the whole show. Sorry!
Still: A bottle of wine has a different showing if it’s enjoyed over a certain period of time, we all know that. Imagine you got to taste, say, a 1989 Haut-Brion (I know – extreme) out of a 0,05L bottle. Would that give you a reliable impression of the wine? Certainly not! Wines open up, right? Sometimes it takes hours (sometimes days!) to get to the heart of a wine. This little little bottle thing just looks like a very good marketing concept to me, you know? Not my cup o’ tea, nor glass o’ wine…Peace!
QOTD: Yeah, half bottles are totally underrepresented in most wine stores. Sometimes you end up having a good meal, a craving for wine and noone around to share it with you. That’s the classic 1/2 bottle situation for me. I’d like to see it more on the shelves, especially for some of the real goodies…
