line of the day – ‘Now that I’m pissed at Mott and all Patriots fans’

Classic episode, great Jets banter (helped by a humungous win), and the longest sniffy sniff ever. Awesome.

  • We tried. Woulda, coulda, shoulda, amazing experience except for the last 53 seconds. 🙁

  • Congrats on the Jets win Gar!!

QOTD: Since I’m a bubbly girl…brut Champagne & Brie!!! Also love Cava with Manchego & quince paste.

BTW, I enjoy Malmsey Madiera with PUMPKIN PIE, Amontillado Sherry with REESE’S BUTTERCUPS, & BROWNIES with PX Sherry:-)

    Cool Im gonna try that.

I’m a one team man. Period. That being said, I used to root for the Jets WHEN The Giants were out of the hunt. Then my Jet-Fan business partner started trash-talking Giants and their FANS out of nowhere (winning pisses people off I guess). Of course I retorted with, “At least they don’t stop serving beer after the first quarter at Giants games.” It then escalated for years. I’m back to secretly rooting for the Jets again but I don’t give him the satisfaction of knowing. He won’t read this wine blog. I like an underdog, and even better, a scrappy team.

QOD: a Good aged Piave with Adobe Red.

stop serving beer after the first quarter at Giants games.”

Good show, nice to see that your back in the thunder saddle. If you get a chance you should do a Port only show sometime, I think you could find some great ports while simultaneously expanding pallats.

QOTD: fromager d’affinois Herb Brie with a 97 Cakebread Cab. It was a while ago, but that wine and cheese pairing has always been stuck in my mind. A Truffle cheese with a 1980 Late Harvest Riesling deserves an honorable mention as well.

#55! Welcome back and happy new year to you and yours! Thin out your schedule dude, you’ll age too fast.
Great show with the high level old school cigar puffin cheese eating leather chair football watching lettuce smoking almond eating dark chocolate nibbling by the fireplace girls in the other room pillow fighting etc etc et-cetera

Had a great madeira tasting at a wine bar in Columbus OH a couple of years ago, vintages as far back as 1908. Great stuff, and hard to find!

Hard to pick just one pairing… humboldt fog and old bordeaux… manchego and spanish reds… port and montbriac… i love cheese.

great to have you back! I just want to say on a that i truly appreciate the time you put into the “thunder” show as it has impacted my knowledge and personal passion for this industry. I think we all understand you have a life but dont stop the thunder show. I think true fans would be mor than happy with a weekly thunder show. I mean, a video blog that is updated weakly! that is way more than i update my regular blog and im not as nearly as buisy as you. Once again thanks for the thunder!!!!!!

Good to see you again! As luck would have it, I tried a Madiera for the first time over the Holidays. It was a Sandeman. Probably not the best, but I was impressed. Does seem that it will be a hard wine to find, though. Quite a change from the early days of this country when Maderia was apparently the wine that everybody drank.

  • First: Happy New Year WLTV viewers, Mott and Gary!

Nice episode. I always keep Sherry around, we use it a lot in the kitchen(cooking), and after design sessions. I don’t have a Madeira at the moment but we get a bottle or two every year, Calvados as well. (If anyone has the opportunity, try the Port line from Santo Tomás, they’re nice, sweet wines from the Guadalupe Valley).

QOTD: Manchego+Marqués de Riscal, and Asadero+Bordeaux… although to be fair, cheese and wine is a favorite food, so to call on a favorite is actually very hard for me, I like food.!

  • Hello Gary and the Vayniacs. My first post here. I love these types of wines. About 10 years ago, work took me to Malaga, Jerez, and Madiera.
I just opened a bottle of Willams and Humbert 15 yr Dry Sack this weekend along with a nice 5 year aged Gouda. I like the nuttiness of both the cheese and the wine along with the way both just sit on the palate. It makes you enjoy each bite and sip. No fast food here.
Thanks again for tasting these types of wines!

Upcoming question: can Jets beat Ravens? (I see insane regular season loss of Jets to Pat’s more and more as intentional strategic gambit… Pat’s are losing this time, they’ll be unable to play seriously … And, yes I am implying that Steelers have no chance vs. Ravens at all.)

    QOTD: Morbier and Port

    GV:

Good to have you back. Good show.

  • Thanks for the madeira talk, hands down my favorite wines on earth…you forgot to mention what madeira has over sherry. acidity! sherry is known for not being very acidic, while madeira usually has an abundance of it making it a little more food friendly and ultimately more enjoyable. for me at least.

So glad you’re back Gary, I missed you. No need to apologize, however as you are the hardest working man in the wine vlog biz and you deserve a rest now and again.
QOTD: Don’t drink wine and cheese together enough but in my experience it was probably Sauternes with Danish blue.

  • Love u pal, I am looking more and more like I may come to Indy for the 2012 Super Bowl, I promise to meet up!

  • maybe

I want to make a request for the new year.

Domestic value roundup. 10 or more wines, under $15 from the US. I have a resolution to drink more domestic wine this year, and I could use a hand finding some good values.

Nice to see you Gary. Very happy you did a show on Port and Madeira. I bought a bottle of the Malmsey for my cousin(a port enthusiast) for Christmas. Now I know he will enjoy it. Will have to pick up a bottle for myself also.
QOTD: Maybe not all-time but pretty darn close. Australian Cheddar with Australian Cab–think it was Clarendon Hills.

  • Anonymous

QOTD: Favorite cheese is Euphoria, a sheepsmilk aged gouda. Goes well with most reds and bubblys. Enjoyed it with a red bubbly from Mumm over the holidays.

  • It was worth the wait. I have not had too many Sherry’s or Madeiras but I these ones sounded very tasty. Got to check it out

  • Anonymous

Gary, you said you loved the Madeira, but you didn’t give us a flavor profile. Dude, please!

  • Port, Sherry, Madeira awesome stuff. What I love about these wines is that they last over a month after you open them so you can stretch your investment.

    YEAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!!! FANTASTIC GARY V. !!!!!!!!!!!

What a wonderful first show back. Loved the sentiments at the end, very heart felt. It was a tragedy and our hearts go out to all the familys of those effected.

Most Giants fans have no problem with rooting for the Jets if the Giants are out. Not sure what Jets fans would not feel the same?

QOTD- A vintage Port and Stilton is the classic and still favorite match.

  • Welcome back. The tan is gonna look great with the pink shirts. 😛

QOTD: No wine but I just had JK’s Scrumpy Organic Hard Cider with Valdeon Spanish Blue Cheese. Oh my God. Amazing.

  • pillow fighting indeed. 😛

Most Giants fans cheer for the Jets when the Giants are out of action. Not sure why Jets fans do not do the same?

QOTD- A vintage Port and stilton is still the best.

  • Welcome back! // Nice win for you on Saturday… good luck Sunday…

QOTD: Per your suggestion (episode 223), and where it all started for me with WLTV (and it’s STILL my favorite)… my Chateau LaPointe w/ Epoisses de Bourgogne

  • Grill Factor

Classic Mott commentary on the JETS – love it!

  • Yeah i felt “off” today 🙁 I am really sorry, I really didnt like the show, I will get it going 🙁

  • missed u too Sauce

  • SCJ I adore u, you have been here for a long time and it means the ducking world to me! I mean it!

  • Don Simpson

    Welcome back Gary!!!

QOTD: I’m a huge fan of drunken goat and fig. Pairs well with a variety of wines. I also love Robusto cheese, its amazing.

  • Globex

First time watching on my iPhone and loved it (wearing the Bose earbuds). Great show, made me hungry and craving to try the Madera with cheese. Don’t apologize for being gone for a bit, you have nothing to apologize for.

QOTD: any one of the great selections from the cellar at Clint’s Mission Ranch while sitting on the patio overlooking the grazing sheep and the ocean in the distance, and enjoying their incredible goats cheese.

  • Hey Gary,

No worries about your lack of vids these past few weeks. Life happens my brother!!!!!

QOTD: My fave cheese and wine pairing is: any GOOD NZ sauvi blanc and a VERY sharp cheddar 🙂

  • Grill Factor

QOTD: Anything with roaring 40s blue cheese…thanks for the recommendation GV. they sell it everywhere here in sydney…

  • John__J

Nice to have ya back Gary, hope the vacation was great. Good luck against the pats as my Ravens take on the steelers.

Qotd: Even though you panned the one you had on the show, (and we know having one of anything never means you should pan a whole varietal etc.), I had a Caves Jean Bourdy Chateau-Chalon (vin jaune), with toasted almonds and Comte cheese that was amazing (and a real traditional pairing). The wine was decanted a good 4 hours though, and really needed it.
Tokaji wines I’ve had with bleu cheese’s have been fantastic too.

Whatever it was that got you to decide on this episode, it was really neat to see some Madeira on the show, the Sherries too, certainly underrated wines.

  • John__J

Weird I just watched that episode today. I agree, I dont remember laughing so much during an episode. The garbage truck on fire line killed me.

  • Bears Jets!

  • Anonymous
