Nebbiolo is the grape I discovered from Italy last year, I had had a few Barolos in the past but Had not explored further, and because of the prices, have not bought too many Barolos but I am loving the last few Langhe Nebbiolos I had. Also, maybe not too outside the box but I’ve had a few Bolgheri Supertuscans and some are very good for a fraction of the price of a bordeau (the Greppicante and the Volpolo come to mind). Had not had much italian wine until 2010 except for Chiantis when I was younger, I explored more France and Spain in the past.

In 2010 I want to explore Niagara wines (Canada) since its a region within driving distance and I just came back from a tour of 15 wineries in that region. I was expecting to find mostly Pinot noirs (if you get a chance to try Clos Jordanne, any of them its well worth it). But I found myself to buy mostly Cab Francs (the 2007s are great but almost all sold out) and cab/merlot blends. They have a more medium body than from other regions which allows you to really taste the different spices and undertones of the wines. But the real discovery was the Rieslings of that region which are as good as it gets for 10-20$ and the Syrah which have a strong peppery finish (love Syrah but often find they have too strong of an olive component to them but not the Niagara ones).

Anyways, anyone close to Buffalo can make a quick stop to Niagara-on-the-lake (10 minutes from Niagara falls), beautifull region with still unknown good wines.

Best show : How I met your mother and Throwdown with Bobby Flay.

  • QOTD-1: Aglianico del Vulture but I plan on looking into the wines of Siciliy since I blog about island wines.

QOTD-2: Just finished watching The Wire and thought it was brilliant.

  • I’m actually ready to try this Teroldego grape….

    Favorite TV show:

Nice. Wine for lovers of European wines, and all wines Italian. Agree on the food compatability (I can see the veal scaloppini) – almost food necessity, in this case… unless lower (fruit) profile, and more vinuous, or ‘winey’ wine is is a preferance. To me, it is, and has just a bit more potential/appeal than the rather characterless Lagreins ( a suspected genetic relative?) that I’d had, but tighter structure than the potentially flabbiness of (industrial purpose -farmed) Refoscos. I find it’s ideal use in blending, in both the old world, and in Cali., but very good examples stand out in my memory from Jim Clendenen’s (Au Bon Climat’s) Italo-centric label ‘Podere dell Olivis’, and from Jim Moore’s (ex-Robert Mondavi) ‘L’Uvaggio di Giacomo’ label.

A Dolcetto, cannot recall the producer right now. Very good wine and a value play as I recall.

Favorite TV show – COPS, duh!

  • sibling to syrah, huh! gotta try it. There are two different wines for sale in my country 🙂
QOTD: Italian wine, must be the Franciacorta I had i Italy in april. Had never heard of that sparkling wine from Italy, Lombardy
TV show right now? BBC’s Top Gear, outstanding.

    Too funny! 🙂

    Nice energy.
QOTD: actually it was a 2007 Foradori Teroldego Rotaliano. great wine

QOTD 2: Nip/Tuck was the best.

Love the show, first time poster tho. My favorite Italian wine that I
found in 2010 was the salice salentino DOC wines. I’ve been looking forward
to finding a Sagrantino and a nice Est! Est!! Est!!! di Montefiascone.
I’ve only been able to find one at like $6, so I’m a tad scared that
it will be crappy. Favorite current show: Fringe

Q – ya know, in the past year, truth be told, I didn’t (get to) step out the box, anywhere i hadn’t been before… Lots of good, estate made wines, spanning the provinces, Friuli to Sicily, but as outside the box of norms as made a big impression was that Valter Scarbolo (a friend of Joe Bastianich) has outstanding Friulano (formerly, Tokai-Friulano), and his $20 Merlot is Outstanding, and decidedly non- Italian in it’s style.

    Daily Show/Colbert (as one show!).

  • Big G, last year I had a great Teroldego. I forgot who the producer was, but really liked it.
I have to correct an error you stated to me after the Jets loss to the Bears, you said neither the Bears or the Jets were going anywhere. Well my friend, I’m happy to say you were wrong and we both are going to our conference championship game. Good luck sir, good luck. Hope to see ya in the big dance.

  • First off, congrats on your victory.

Short and sweet is my preference for early in the week. As the week drags on, I want to see longer shows.

“Cedar juice”? Hmmmm, I’ve never experienced that wine trait but am sure to try it.

QOTD #1: I can’t see what I’m typing right now but I would like to see some more wines from the region of Calabria (tip of the boot). The one the Jets will use to kick the Steelers butt this weekend.

    QOTD #2: 1) In Treatment 2) HOUSE 3) Survivor

Cheers and good luck this weekend

  • most intriguing “outside the box” italian of 2010 was a bottle of 2001 scacciadiavoli sagrantino di montefalco…I AM PUMPED ABOUT THE BAROLO OF THE SOUTH–TAURASI!!! DO A SHOW ON IT!!!
    favorite tv show=MNF

  • If all the Vayniacs showed up, why would we care? 🙂

  • Agree on “Shameless.” Love Emily Rossum

  • Oops, forgot one of the questions.

QOTD #1a: I had a Jermann Pinot Grigio in 2010 that I thought was probably the best Italian white wine I’ve ever had in a long time. Amazing juice. Their chard was pretty good too but the PG . . . wow.

  • NY Pete

    hey hey …

    work sucks.

    where’s SS Chris?

    QOTD:

Most outside the box Italian wine I had in 2010: 2006 Sella e Mosca Cannonau Riserva
Region I’m looking forward to trying in 2011: Austrian Pinot Noir
Favorite TV Show: Tie between Fringe, Breaking Bad and Mad Men

  • Todd

    Teroldego I shall try.
QOTD: The most out of the box Italian I had in 010 was a 2003 Donnafugata ben rye which was really fun! Too new to wine to focus intently on any one region, but Champagne and Piedmont are my faves. As for TV I have been sweating Doogie Houser M.D.

  • NY Pete

Ian Dorin is the master of all he surveys.

  • NJ Big Chris

QOTD: 2007 Cascina Gilli Freisa D’asti. I tried this one after it aired on episode #884. It’s probably the only outside the box Italian I’ve had. On that note I ate at WD-50 in NYC on sunday and tried my first Barolo at the Sommeliers suggest pairing. I am very excited to dig into more of these. I also purchased a bottle of 2006 Sandro Fay Valtellina Sforzato and excited to open that bottle sometime soon as I have never had one before. Nebbiolo is growing on me quickly QOTD2: South Park, Top Chef, 30 Rock.

  • Anonymous

True that. So everyone would chip in for us not from the states? Would be a pleasant surprise.

  • I am so pumped for this weekend! You have officially converted me to a fan of the J-E-T-S

Thanks for introducing us to the Teroldego. I always enjoy new wines you introduce us to. Ever since I started with WLTV I have really expanded my palate, that is for me. This was a quickie and I’m one for a much longer sustainable Thunder Clap! 6 Min. is hardly a spattering of Thunder. Very Nice no matter how brief. QOTD: Barbera de Alba which was nice for a first try. QOTD2: NCIS, BY FAR!!!!!!!!!!!

  • NJ Big Chris

Ive had the 2007 Donnafugata Passito di Pantelleria Ben Ryé. It was awesome dessert wine.

  • RobinC

I can’t think of any out of the box Italian wines I’ve had. Someone included Cannonau in his list and I’ve had that.

My favorite TV show is Charlie Rose although I don’t watch every show to the end. In Treatment was pretty good this year.

  • Anonymous

QOTD: Dolcetto probably, I have been trying to taste more of Italy because I don’t give it enough props.

    QOTD#2: House.

  • steve

QOTD: The Fontezoppa verdichio that was on the show a few months back. Great for 12 dollars. 30 rock is the best comedy on tv (and best over all), edging out modern family. But a tie between Dexter and Californication for best non-comedy.

  • steve

    Money show selections.

  • Anonymous

Haha, okay, I’m in. I’m a little green on the site still so I wasn’t aware of the past live shows. Thanks for responding!

  • John__J

Ok Gary, how about this: I see your reason for no play-off beard, so why not go all the way the other way? How about shaving your head and going totally cue ball until the Jets take the Super Bowl this year? (you’ve gotten pretty close before anyway, just check episode 619)

qotd: I had a gropello a couple months ago that was quite good, from the Veneto I think.
qotd2: no longer running: The Wire, still running: Curb your Enthusiasm

  • Anonymous

QOTD: Good negroamaro, lot of entry level stuff but just a few bucks more and it’s ripe and food friendly!

Fave TV show is The Colbert Report or Curb Your Enthusiasm.

  • Anonymous

Love Teroldego. Had a Syrah from Italy which is not that typical of there and was very good.

Shouldn’t the # 30 be on the board, 29,28 so on?

  • Cubatobaco (Ray)

    Another nerd wine! Love it!

One wine shows are good, but if it’s revolving around one bottle, throw in a pairing of some sorts. Or maybe go more balled on the bottle. Just my opinion.

QOTD: haven’t had a chance to really explore a lot of Italy yet (I know). Always open to suggestions. Recommendations $50 and below. Thanks!

QOTD 2: House and The Office

  • Anonymous

You’re groove for 2011 had better not be one wine shows. That is just lazy. Congrats on the Jets win against the Pats. Hopefully they can do the same thing in Pittsburg. WL still rocks, whenever you are here.

  • I keep trying any whites that have grapes I have not heard of. I am really enjoying many of the northern whites.

QOTD – Lie to Me/White Collar. – my Netflix favorite is BBC’s Top Gear

  • Anonymous

I didn’t get the Conn Valley in time! Any chance that deal is still happening?
