Great tasting! I love learning about Taurasi wines. Have you tried other Aglianico wines? Which one is your favorite?

good work gary. you’re clutch. doubters beware.

interesting variety. I really don’t know much at all about southern Italian wines in general.

  • Italian wines. Love it! Now to watch …

QOTD 1: You’ve gotta use water if you like your coco steaming hot and you don’t wanna deal with that weird milk “skin”.

    QOTD 2: http://www.bevmo.com/Shop/ProductDetail.aspx?Ne=5&N=39+4294967067&area=wine&No=10&ProductID=2362&Ns=Name%7c0
It’s the Ch Ste Michelle Riesling. Odd, since I’m more of a Red drinker. It’s cheap, food-friendly, croud-pleasing, and delicious enough to always have it on hand.

    Great Show, G!
I was dying when you talked about a strawberry popping out of your scab. Classic!

I think your standards have been particularly high recently G. Seems like 88 is the new 90.

Love the vibe on the shows lately and at almost a thousand, that’s awesome. Thanks for everything.

qotd; I never drink the same wine twice, I’ve expanded my palette to the point I’m outta control.

Wow! Great episode. What energy! I have to say that I was shocked by last week’s energy … particularly given the loss, but this was phenomenal. The thunder amp must be turned up to 11 today!!!

QOTD1: water. most chocolate milk mixes (even premium ones) have the dried milk powder in them, so water is actually most appropriate.
QOTD2: While I don’t have one wine that I would call my house wine (because I am trying to expand my palate by trying new wines) I definitely drink more Ridge than anything else. http://www.ridgewine.com
I had a 1996 Ridge Monte Bello for Christmas. It was beautiful and although you could tell that it had some age on it, it still tasted bright and fresh. What a treat!

Gary – Great episode! Thanks again!

    QOTD: Milk

  • Ewwwwww, GaryV, a scab? In spite of that descriptor, I still enjoyed the reviews of one of my favorite varietals — love those aglianicos.

QOTD: water when I want it fast, but I have time for a true treat it’s milk all the way (with Mexican cocoa melted in).

  • Anonymous

QOTD: you can make hot cocoa with water?

  • John__J

Love the Taurasi, great to see it on the show. I love southern Italy wines, there are so many great wines from lesser known varietal’s that are screaming values.
And Sasha making an appearance this week maybe, awesome! I’d love to see what would happen if you got Sasha in there with SIR Gary. I’d be curious to see how Sasha reacts and if he’d even stay and not get up and leave.

I just bought a Fruili wine today from the Schioppettino varietal, which I’m psyched to try.
I’ve tried for a long time to find one from Corsica, where Schioppettino is their flagship grape I believe, but still haven’t been able to find one.

Probably cant get the wine outside of BC….

  • Cubatobaco (Ray)

Great show, Gary! It’s great to learn about a varietal I’ve never heard of, especially when I’m on an Italian kick. I’m looking for the Terredora as soon as I post this.

QOTD: MILK! Water is a smack in the face.

QOTD 2: Catena Malbec, Boarding Pass

  • Cubatobaco (Ray)

    Hahaha!

    Great show.
QOTD1: Generally water, but treat myself to milk if I think I deserve it (much the same with wine. If I had a great day at work will have a great wine)
QOTD2: I’m from Australia and my house wine is the Cascabel Grenache from McLaren Vale. Not your typical Australian fruit bomb that we seem to send over to you guys in the US. It is a shame that we send them over to you, the best wines we make stay here.

Great show GV! My mother is napoletana so this episode to me was great. I don’t really drink hot coco my wife does, she makes hers with milk. Hey I was wondering if you could do a show from the region of Italy where I grew up, the beautiful island of Sardegna? The red I drank the most that I consider my house red is Syrah called sixguns from the winery of bridlewood. http://www.bridlewoodwinery.com/our-wines/syrah/six-gun-syrah.html

  • Nick Laszewski

Gary – Do you go back and read new comments from old episodes? Just wondering.

    QOTD: I’m from Wisconsin.

We seem to mix it up and don’t really have a “go to” house/table wine. Did find myself drinking a lot of 2006 Zaca Mesa Syrah last year though, at least 2 bottles a month. Have a few bottle left but may see if I can get any more.

QOTD: A go to last year was the Chateau Smith CS

QOTD: I definitely consumed more of this gem as my house red than any other single wine in the past year: http://winelibrary.com/wines/43646-2005+Bordeaux+Bag+In+The+Box+3L

This episode is soooooo overdue, thanks for finally hitting up Campania. Do Etna next 🙂

  • John__J

Ridge is fantastic, love their wines.

  • Hot cocoa – mix cocoa with a third milk, into a ‘paste’, then top up with hot water.
    Stir.
    Yessssssssssssssssssss

  • John__J

Good question, I was wondering if he goes back and reads those too. Either way I’ve still been commenting on any back episodes I watch.

Lovin’ it, Gary. Thanks for pulling out a lurker 🙂

QOTD 1 : Skim milk. Makes nicer foam, like it does in cappuccino.
    QOTD 2 : Masi Campofiorin

BTW, Aglianico is pronounced Alyee’ anico. Anything spelled gli is “lyee”.

QOTD 1: Milk, without a doubt. QOTD 2: Plungerhead Old Vine Zin. Lodi, 2007 or 2008, my go to, after work, sit in front of the fire, everyday wine–about $12 at Empire Wine, Albany NY.

  • John__J

L’Argentier also does an awesome cheap cinsault

  • QOTD:
    2007 Beyerskloof Pinotage (South Africa)

  • Anonymous

I love cinsault. Always affordable, light, fresh, high acidity. Simple and approachable….. underrated imo

  • Anonymous

    Alway, ALWAYS, Milk. No question.

QOTD: I’m part of the CKC and also on the palate expansion journey so I didn’t buy a whole lot of the same wine, but I did buy a few bottles of Bodegas Castaño C Monastrell which is a nice QPR. Here’s the cellar tracker

    http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=257002&iNote=1883347

Also, I would love to see a show on Sicilian wines made around Mt. Etna from grapes like Nerello Mascalese! Do it up, GV!

  • QotD1: Milk. All day, every day, baby.

QotD2: I drank more bottles of Txakoli Xarmant last year than any other wine (http://winelibrary.com/wines/52444-2009+Arabako+Xarmant+Txakolina+750ML). I really love the Txakolina style of wine. It seems that you’ve never done a Txakolina show, Gary, nor have you ever had a single Txakolina on the show. Any chance you could throw Txakolina some Thunder Show love in the future?

  • Leatherpalate

LP likes the milk. LP also been down with the http://www.cayusevineyards.com/static/

This cat in early 2007 told me bout it. Word LP out~!

    Milk!!

  • QOTD: Milk and new to wine so have been trying a different bottle every time.

  • Randall

    …yo ma.

  • QOTD 1: Water.

QOTD 2: Can’t say I really have a house wine. I’m so new to wine that I’m always trying different things. So instead, I’ll go with favorite wine of all time. (Easy because I’ve probably tried fewer than 100). 2004 Luce Brunello Di Montalcino

    http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=658507

  • fat chef

Fun show! Both wines seem worth trying.

QOTD1: instant cocoa, water, and a half spoon of instant coffee!
QOTD2: Gnarly Head Zin, and Eco Domani Pinot Grigio.

  • Anonymous

    QOTD1: Milk all the way
QOTD2: Semi dry tokaji called Kiraldyuvar Sec. Fantastic, floral, touch of honey, some spice, unbelievably smooth with refreshing acidity.

  • QOTD: Cheap trader Joe’s Italian and French varietals were constantly being opened at my Apartment. You can find amazing deals for under 10 bucks there. GV you should do a show on some of them. There is a few I would think would cater directly to your palate also. My favorite was the 2008/2009 Il Valore Sangiovese from Puglia. The best sauce simmering wine I’ve ever had. Sidenote: They also have amazing CAVA and Prosecco deals there as well. I spent 30 bucks on 4 bottles for new years!

  • Joe D. My Bro!! Great Episode Recco.

Gary Vee Thanks for doing it. Love Taurasi…

QOTD. House wine: I try a lot of different wine, has to be a star for me to re-buy. So, my answer is NO HOUSE WINE. Palate Expansion..

  • Anonymous

Taurasi!! Great Ep topic, and I DO remember mentioning Aglianico (both Taurasi and Vulture) just about a week ago in the comments, so THANK YOU for exposing these wines!

SIDE QOTD: Go with milk for the richness (even 2% is rich enough)
QOTD: I switch it up so often that it really is tough to nail one down, but for a value wine (found it on closeout, bought up a few) that I drank more than many others in 2010, I’ll say:
2006 Frogmore Creek Chardonnay, Tasmania (their Dry Riesling, Iced Riesling, and Pinot Noir are fantastic as well, especially the Pinot for $20!! SEEK THIS WINERY OUT!)
