Great tasting! I love learning about Taurasi wines. Have you tried other Aglianico wines? Which one is your favorite?

  • Side question: If it’s Swiss Miss then I almost prefer water. I love the hydrating factor of water in my hot chocolate when I know the 2nd half of the snowball fight is coming up. With all other HC’s I like milk…and buttered toast to dip in it. It’s delicious.

QOTD: Well 14 Hands’ “Hot to Trot” red seemed to be a favorite with my family. As part of the CKC I’m not too picky. I just drink it when it’s available. But it wasn’t bad nor was it my favorite.

    QOTD Variation:

What liqour goes best in hot chocolate?

I’m a lurker! Love hearing about Italian wines, especially Piedmont, but also less common Italian regions and varietals. I’ve been mulling over a couple Taurasi at the local store, but the three or so they carry are more entry level examples ($18-24). Still, I’ll probably give one a chance.

White: 2007 Silver Thread Vineyard (Finger Lakes) Gewurztraminer–runs about $15 retail in the Finger Lakes-area of New York (http://www.silverthreadwine.com/)

Red: 2005 Geyser Peak Cabernet Sauvignon–local store ran a special at $12/bottle. Drinks much better than the 2006 vintage, although supposedly the 2006 received better ratings. Very expressive, pretty Cabernet–easily worth $20 in my mind.

    GV:
FRIDAY. Here’s the thing: You used to (way, way, waaaaaaaaaaaaay back in the old days) tape a great Laid-Back-Friday (LBF) show. That’s, evidently, back in the day when FRIDAY happened to you. That it doesn’t happen to you anymore… well… kinda sucks…. GARY! Where are you? We all work on Fridays!!! Do you? Or, are you hanging with Kanye on Fridays? Where did our MAN-OF-THE-PEOPLE (MOTP) go????

So LBF it up. Don’t NOT be a MOTP, and it’s good to hear you’re thinking about them there FINGER LAKES (FL)!

Every day wine? How about St. Cosme 20o8, Cotes du Rhone.

    oh… and… DON’T SUCK.

    ~TSL

  • without a doubt peppermint schnapps. The SNUGGLER!

  • SQOTD: Milk
QOTD: To tell the truth, I haven’t had the same wine twice in a very long time. I don’t really stick to one varietal either.

  • Alexandre-CF

  • Gar, lovin the haircut! Also, nice to see a geeky Italian wine come out to play…and show so well!

I know your feeling bad about the superbowl! Maybe this Superbowl/Wine inspired photo will cheer you up: http://bit.ly/hL134b

QOTD1: MILK baby! It does the body good:-) I like my hot cocca a little more full-bodied. Extra whip please!! And sprinkles!!

QOTD2: Everyone is so used to drinking just Chardonnay, Riesling or Sauvignon Blanc so I really got a kick out of this $9.99 not your everyday fun white called “Vinum Cellars” 2009 Chenin Blanc-Viognier blend. And for reds, I really enjoyed “Vinum Red Dirt Red” GSM blend for $15.99:-)

    ChEErs!!!

  • MattB

Gary – wow, very poetic today. I had to write down your tasting note for the 2004 Terredora Taurasi “Cranberry meets pomegranate, long chocolate component balanced with popping blueberries….” Nice 🙂

QOTD I – milk always. Hot chocolate is a treat and deserves real milk.

QOTD II – We mix up a bunch of different wines but here are a few that we serve often that are always excellent –

Champagne – Diebolt Valois Blanc de Blanc NV – refreshing, delicious bubbles

Graci Quota 600 Etna Bianco 2009 – dry, minerals, rocks, a little touch of spice from Sicily

A,J, Adam Dhroner Riesling 2008 – delicious, vivacious, enticing, pairs superbly with many kinds of food

Domaine Leon Barral Faugeres 2006 – Deep, dark, inky crimson. Black fruit paired with tobacco and leather. Great food wine

Catherine et Claude Marechal Bourgogne Rouge 2006 – clean, light, delicious village Burgundy with amazing balance and freshness

    Cheers!

castello has got NO love for the cello…
    😉

  • I agree on Peppermint Schnapps….2nd runner up…BAILEY’S. Extra whip on both please:-)

  • MattB

I agree – some fantastic wines coming from Etna on Sicily that are both delicious and great value. Would love to see a selection on WLTV with your comments Gary

Clearly still “the internet’s most passionate wine program”. Though it goes unsaid.

Loved the aglianico episode. That is an obscure grape. We need more of those.

QOTD1–Skim milk with the Swiss Miss package.

QOTD2–Ridge Lytton Springs Zin is always an all summer house pour with BBQ

  • QOTD 1: Hot coco with coffee, we call it the “trucker mocha”.

QOTD 2: 2007 Twenty Bench Cabernet Sauvignon

    http://winelibrary.com/wines/49603-2007+Twenty+Bench+Cabernet+Sauvignon+750ML

QOTD- two wines come to mind:

    Cantina Zaccagnini Montepulciano d’Abruzzo 2007- $13-$17
    2008 Ménage à Trois Red- $8-$12

**looking for an everyday pinot noir- recommendations welcomed!!!

    Question #1: duh… milk
Question #2: Renegade Wine Co. Horse Heaven Hills Red Wine by Trey Busch from Sleight of Hand in Walla Walla. http://www.sofhcellars.com

  • Alex Truelove

QOTD: The Trumpeter Malbec is the only wine I’ve bought more than once this year…well within the CKC budget and I like it with both meats and chocolate. http://www.rutiniwines.com/
QOTD: (Recognizing that there is a MARKED DIFFERENCE between hot cocoa and hot chocolate), If it’s cocoa, 1/2 each. If it’s chocolate, whole milk and maybe a chili pepper.

The strawberry scab comment was disgusting but HILARIOUS. I don’t think I’ve ever laughed out loud watching WLTV.

    QOTD1 – Milk
QOTD2 – merlin-cherrier sancerre when I am drinking white and can find it.

  • John__J

  • John__J

Another wine that would be cool to see on here

  • John__J

How is Mexican hot choc different from regular hot choc?

  • Anonymous

GV: Unlike the G in Gary, the g in aglianico is silent.
The Mastroberardino needs much more time. I haven’t tasted the 2005, but their wines generally need a lot of bottle age. A reasonably priced, earlier maturing aglianico is Di Majo Norante Contada, from Molise. There are also some very good aglianicos made in Basilicata (I like Gudarra a lot). To me, the prices of good Taurasi have gone too high compared to the competition. But the best (like Mastroberardino Radici Riserva) are really spectacular. Galloni is not alone in his view of the 2005 Radici, Gambero Rosso rated it Tre Bicchieri.

The only way to make hot chocolate is with milk (or even milk mixed with half and half), fresh cocoa and cane sugar. Put the three in a metal cup and steam with the frother of an espresso machine.

  • MILK!

don’t want to sound lame, but i’m in the process of expanding and learning and appreciating more about wine, so at the end of 2011 i could answer this question with more experience, but as far as last year goes, i mostly drank wine from my family’s vineyard http://www.anindor.com and wine from the little community of Elkton, Oregon, where i recently moved to.

  • Yes, you are changing the wine world and glad to be along for the ride. Too bad the Taurasi is sold out already. Such a bummer.

QOTD #1: Ummm, please, whole milk but preferably light whipping cream in my hot chocolate.
    QOTD #2:
    White: Taburno Falanghina
    http://www.thewinedoctor.com/weekend/taburnofalanghina08.shtml

    Red: Flowers Pinot Noir

    Cheers!

    P.S. Can the board behind you have a countdown . . . 22 . . . 21?

  • John__J

you can get great quality pinot noir’s for the price that are from Patagonia, Argentina.

Just had an awesome bottle from Tenuta delle Terre Nere. Definitely buying that wine in the future and bringing awesome complexity for the price!

Side QOTD: Milk, all the way. I have no use for watery chocolate.

Wine QOTD: Not exactly an exotic or rare wine, but my have-around-the-house wine this year has been J. Lohr Cabernet Sauvignon.

    http://winelibrary.com/wines/20770-J+Lohr+Cabernet+Sauvignon+750ML

Now I’m going to go to bed and try desperately to get the idea of strawberry scabs out of my mind.

  • steve

QOTD 1: Whole milk for sure on principle. However I remember reading about a blind tasting of some absurd number of hot cocoas, and those which ranked highest in the “creamy” category by tasters were those which called for water (the explanation being that they use more of some sort of thickening agent (perhaps gluten or a gluten-like protein.))

  • Agree, this is a close 2nd in my house. Very nice white wine.

  • Curls_CDN

QOTD #1 : Taking it a step further… Half and Half all the way… with finely chopped dark chocolate (not the powdery stuff)… like liquid ganache! Mmmmm

QOTD #2: Gloria Ferrer Sonoma Brut… tiny bubbles in my glass… makes me happy 🙂

  • I’ve been asking GV for a Tasmanian bubbly show for ages so good luck.

  • Anonymous

Bailey’s, 100%. Dammit, now I wish I had hot chocolate and Bailey’s around the house.

  • Anonymous

Nice show! I never tried a Taurasi wine but I’ll do it next saturday
    QOTD 1: Water
QOTD 2: My everyday wine is Marques de Riscal, Rioja, 2004 and 2005

  • Anonymous

Ok didn’t really have a go to wine this year, but I just got this, and if I had one this would be it. Unreal riesling

  • John__J

I saw your M. Chapoutier Banyuls pairing with the Oreo’s on your site. I put away a couple bottles of the ’07 myself, that wine is fantastic.

  • Great show. Will try to find the Terredora.
QOTD1: Living in San Antonio, the only hot chocolate we drink is Abuelita: Mexican chocolate with cinnamon, always water.
QOTD2: No specific type of wine, but the house winery tends to be Adelaida, from Paso Robles.

  • Anonymous

loved this show. looking forward to some brown bags.

    QOTD 1 – water.

QOTD 2 – no real house wine this year I was busy expanding my pal. But lots of different Syrahs

  • SQOTD: Definitely Milk
QOTD: Despite the fact that I like big red wines, I have a real soft spot for a good crisp Riesling. The one I have had the most this year (and in previous years) is the Vineland Estates’ Semi-Dry Riesling (http://www.vinelandwineshop.com/products.php?product=2008-Semi-Dry-Riesling or http://www.canadianwineshop.com/product_info.php/manufacturers_id/40/products_id/363).

I love this wine, it is very smooth with a nice acidic finish and the alcohol is always under control. It may not be as acidic as you like it Gary, but I find I could drink this wine all day. I found their earlier vintages were better, so if you can get a 2006 or earlier, grab it!
