Great tasting! I love learning about Taurasi wines. Have you tried other Aglianico wines? Which one is your favorite?

Brown bags? cool. Fingerlakes? cool. Possibility of Sasha? Priceless.

QOTD 1: Whole Milk w/ Heavy whipped cream.
QOTD 2: No house wine. Too many different places and grapes to drink yet. But If I had to pick the varietal I drink most? Pinot Noir.

QOTD #1: I went into rehab for milk years ago. Try the soy/rice/almond products. Really. not bad if good cocoa and the paste method are used.

QOTD#2: NorCal of course! All over the map this year, but I just had this Sauv Blanc and enjoyed it; Picazo Preston Clone. Napa Valley.

Its hard to say my house wine…. the most value driven is the Sebastiani Cabernet Sauvignon and I have gotten MANY insane closeouts at this shop, which is my local haunt in my home town of Lambertville, NJ on the Delaware River. Here is the link..

    http://www.littlebroswine.com/sku3676.html

But I have probably drank more wine from anything produced by Chris Ringland in Australia, (JP Belle Terroir ) which used to be in stock at Wine Library, or Spain; Ringland is the wine maker for El Nido, Clio and Alto Moncayo, both the regular Alto Moncayo and the barely modest Veraton.

As far as whites, I stick almost exclusively to bubbles, Prosecco mostly, Rose Champagne when the wallet lets me.

QOTD 1: Milk! is there any other way?
QOTD 2: Alamos malbec 2008- this wine blew me away! love it love it love it. i’m pumped for the 2009 as well which I have not tried yet.

I have a low tolerance for lactose, so usually water, even if I do enjoy of the milk more.

I try to try something new all the time, but if I’m recommending wine to someone else as an everyday wine, I’d go either with Aeon or Apolloni pinot noir out of Oregon, or Ghost Tree cabernet out of California. Good experiences with these.

QOTD1: Milk, the only way. QOTD2: Chateau Larrivaux 2005, very nice Brodeaux at the price point. I think Wine Lib is sold out. Also; http://www.amavicellars.com/

  • I love Banyuls because when you think of fortified wine, you think massive or dense..but Banyuls is anything but that.

I had another great Banyuls a couple weeks ago..Domaine la Tour Vieille Banyuls Vendanges 2007! Full of cherry, jam, black pepper and cocoa..YUMMY!

    QOTD: Milk tastes better.
    QOTD 2: 12 year scotch

GV, great haircut. Very business like and clean. This is your look. Mott, great job with the cue cards. HAHAHAH!!!! “The Big ASS Glass”, Always “The Big ASS Glass”

You have done it again G, introducing us to tha “Aglianico” varietal. Well done! I may have to break one of my rules and spend the bones for that “Terredora”. Sounds fantastic and my kind of wine.

Great show! Loved this episode. You had me at “SCAB”! I was smiling through the whole episode. You were definately bringing the “THUNDER”! The “THUNDER” was Clap’n which kept me smiling. Keep Bringing It Brother! Thanks!

  • Anonymous

Cool show never even heard of those wines let alone the region.
QOTD1:Don’t mind water but milk just brings more THUNDER!!!
QOTD2:Thanks to you Gary this year I’ve hardly bought the same wine twice, but if I had to say what sticks out it would have to be http://www.wine.com/V6/Tikal-Amorio-Malbec-2008/wine/104742/detail.aspx It pleases my wife’s palate as does mine and goes with a lot.

  • Globex

dude… Mila Kunis, done deal. Committed to order a case of the Terredora for the Mila Kunis comparison alone. I seriously cannot even remember your other comments about this wine.

    QOTD: whole milk
QOTD2: seriously can’t remember! Damn you Mila Kunis!! LOL!!!

  • Glad to see a good Italian show, one of my new years resolutions is to expand my palate, especially Italian wines.
QOTD1: Cheap hot cocoa water, good stuff like Lake Champlain chocolates I use milk
QOTD2: Really haven’t had just one wine filling up my glass but I’d say most 09 Beaujolais have been my favorite especially the Fleuries.

  • Anonymous

Think I probably deleted scab smell from my olfactory memory
    Side Question: Milk
QOTD: Don’t really drink a lot of the same wines, but definitely would recommend McPrice Myers “Beautiful Earth” and Domaine du Columbier Crozes-Hermitage “Cuvee Gaby”, the ’06 vintage. Too bad WL is out of at least the Cuvee Gaby. An old standby is the Justin Cabernet–haven’t been disappointed yet.

  • I agree, the countdown idea would just add to the excitement. Nice taste in hot chocolate and pinot.

  • It is a spicy concoction taking warm cocoa to the next level. The spices added bring more complexity in place of the cloying sweetness. Drink it John!

    : )

  • I want the couch and a pack of hockey cards. That Cotes du rhone is pretty great. Good call TSL!

  • Grill Factor

I love Mastro – been drinking their Grappa for years now, it’s special stuff.

Hot Cocoa with water topped with a spoonful of frozen cool whip

QOTD: My house wine in Sydney is the ‘2000 Mount Langi Ghiran Cab Sauv Merlot’ from Western Victoria. I scored tons of this on a re-release from the winery. I pop this on Friday night and it stays fresh til Sunday dinner. When I’m back in Boston my house wine is the ‘2006 Tormaresca Neprica Puglia.’ That wine paired with a crispy pepperoni pizza from papa ginos is heaven.

  • TheSmirkingLurker

I had no idea J Mascis was a VAYNiAC!
    Cool!

  • Been awhile, sorry. Great show, I’m a fan of Taurasi (when I can afford it). Aglianico can be pretty tough outside of Taurasi, so definitely judge the grape by a Taurasi wine. Been enjoying Campania whites for a long time, too. QOTD 1: Half and half (and pinch of cayenne). QOTD 2: I still don’t like the idea of “wine ruts.”

  • Christopher Dickens

QOTD1: Neither. Half a ‘hockey puck’ of Abuelita with coffee. Dunkin to be precise!
QOTD2: Indiana’s premier winery is right in our backyard, Oliver Winery. I’m a fan of their Shiraz, my wife goes for their Riesling and Gewurtztraminer. Outside of local, my wife and I can agree on Malbecs but we explore.

  • AWESOME show… found the Terredora at a local shop… $39… will be picking up 2…

    side QOTD: Milk

Wine QOTD: 2 ‘house’ wines for me in 2010:

    Per GaryV himself in 2009:

    qotd1; Milk
QOTD; The wine of the day Vidon 05 Pinot Noir.
I do not have a house wine.

  • QOTD1: Milk. Obsessed with Williams Sonoma Peppermint hot chocolate- buy enough to last me the whole year. It’s my night cap.
QOTD2: Francois Montand Blanc de Blanc is our house wine. I love bubbles and have found that this wine has surprising elegance for the price. The bubbles are delicate and the taste lingers. Wine library has it for a great price!

half and half a little Kahalua and float of Frangelico. House wine 2006 Dobbes Grande Assemblage Syrah. got 2 cases for 16 a btl. GONE! http://www.northwest-wine.com/Dobbes-Family-Estate-Syrah-Assemblage.html#axzz1CfyHjM19.
The other is H3 Les Chevaux ask Wine Library to get some for you! under 12 bones!

I’m a water guy in my hot chocolate.

QOTD: I’m embarrassed but I try every dirt cheap wine I can find looking for a house wine. There are some cheap wines from Fresh and Easy that are okay. When I started drinking wine, which was only 11 months ago I drank Crane Lake which is really cheap, but the cab sav and petite sirah held me for a while. I really like Bogle wines for $9.

The fingerlakes episode sounds intriguing. Can’t wait. Thanks for the great work!

    Yours,

    B.S.

    Milk.

I really liked the Dr Loosen Riesling. The cheapest one. Everyone liked it.

  • Anonymous

    QOTD1:Milk defintely!
Gary you got my attention on the Terredora as I know from watching your shows you don’t give out high scores too often! I will have to try this one.
QOTD2:House wine for 2010 is a tough one because I like to try new wines all the time. Probably Mumm Napa Cuvee Sparkling goes with everything

  • John__J

    cool ty

  • John__J

I really like that one too, but haven’t had the ’07. I’ll have to check it out

  • Awesome timing on the Taurasi show… Gonna be classing it up for SB XLV w/ a Feudi di San Gregorio Piano de Montevergine (Taurasi Riserva) w/ some manner of aged cheese while rooting on my Packers! Go Pack Go!

    QOTD: half milk, half water
QOTD2: don’t really have a house wine (constant palate expansion), but I suppose if I did it would have to be Bodegas Ateca Garnacha De Fuego, which is an Jorge Ordonez project. I’ve had several vintages of it and it’s awfully satisfying for the $7-$8 I’m able to get it for.

HUGE Taurasi and Aglianico fan in general! Thanks for doing this show!

QOTD1 – Milk, because to suggest otherwise is just silly.
QOTD2 – Only case of wine I’ve ever bought, and at half-retail:
    http://www.tenutasantantonio.it/pdf/eng/8_T_ing_MGarbi_72_08.pdf

  • I had never heard of Aglianico before and love to learn more about Italian wines. As far as the QOTD goes, I enjoy Coelho Willamette Valley Pinot noir http://w.mawebcenters.com/coelhowinery/ecommerce/wine.html

  • Anonymous

Nice content tonight, G. I don’t think I’ve ever had a Taurasi wine. That will change.

    QOTD: Milk for sure.

QOTD: Probably Guigal Cote du Rhone rouge & blanc.

  • Anonymous

Awesome Show! I’m excited to expand my ignorant pallete.
QOTD1—-> It’s gotta be milk, but when it’s -13 F, and you have run out milk… Water will work in a pinch.
QOTD2—-> I’m in college, so I don’t ally have a house wine, but my go to wine is Henry of Pelham Baco Noir. http://www.canadianwineshop.com/index.php/cPath/91_92?osCsid=tt6uakp1vqvg9f9t1fvnadjvc5

  • QOTD 1: Milk 100%
QOTD 2: maybe not house wine but the bottle I had the most of was the delicious 2009 Marcel Lapierre Morgon http://www.wine-searcher.com/find/marcel+lapierre+morgon+beaujolais+cru+france/2009/-/-/m/-/68791

  • I’ve been a fan of Lytton Springs but disappointed with the 07 vintage for some reason (my friends agree). Your thoughts?

  • Ha!! Too funny. Melba we missed you yesterday!! Your name came up more than once. Cheers.

Great show. Really enjoy Aglianico myself however, one of our “daily drinkers” for 2010 was the 2002 Gladiator Salice Salentino riserva. Cant find any link. sorry. Our other daily drinker was the 2009 Famega Vinho Verde for the summer and the 2008 Les Trois Tours Cotes du Rhone rouge.

Oh, and for nostalgia I use hot water for hot cocoa since thats what we used when i was a kid.

Les trois tours, damn fine for under $8
    http://www.spirit76wines.com/293400?brandid=30416&mv_tmp_session=1&id=nsession

Famega Vinho Verde (2007 listed in link)
    http://winelibrary.com/wines/37872-2007+Famega+Vinho+Verde+750ML

and a side question, when does the 2010 vinho verde arrive?

  • Loved the show…I really want to go to Italy right now. Vanilla Soy milk for my chocolate milk! I go to about 5 Israeli wineries a week so I collect a lot of wines. We always drink a higher end wine for Friday night (Shabbat dinner) but during the week we will drink a $12 bottle of whatever red I have in the house from a winery that gave me their wine. The Galil Mountain Cabernet Shiraz 2008 tends to be that wine for us. http://www.galilmountain.co.il/Home/English

  • Randall

I am SOOO *deep breath*SOOOOO sorry, Lisa. It was the height of rudeness to give you a bottle, and then 15 minutes later… open it. What an incomparable Asshat I was. If cellarrat had not been talking so much smack about those two Zins, I wouldn’t have popped it. Yeah, that’s it… it’s all His fault… 😉

I Really owe you one (literally) and Thank you again for the PN…

  • Don Simpson

WOW!!!! Gary was rip roaring en fuego today. FANTASTIC episode, that was a lot of fun. I haven’t tried the aglianico varietal, so that was informative.

QOTD1: It’s definitely more delicious with milk. Those tiny marshmallows are funny.
QOTD2: As crazy as this sounds, its been very rare that I’ll buy the same wine multiple times. With so much variety out there I haven’t really come back to the same bottle. The region/vintage I drank the most over the past year was definitely 2007 Rhones, so for a house wine I guess I would say 2007 Cotes du Rhone and 2007 Gigondas.

  • Anonymous

Going back to school, wine 101. You keep coming up with these varietals that are not easy to find here. I will try to find this wine but I have my doubts. Great show and keep it up.

QOTD. Milk and the house wine Barnard Griffin cab/merlot.

  • Don Simpson

Thanks for the vinho verde recommendation. My fiance is a huge vinho verde fan because of the low alcohol so we’ll have to check that one out. Thanks!

  • Randall

I’ve been drinking it for a while. It’s not as good a year as 2009, though.

  • I’m going to have to get at least one bottle of the Terredora. Aglianico = awesome!

QOTD: Can’t remember a wine I had more than once, but if I had to pick the house wines… Whites: Matrot Bourgogne Blanc ($17), Kiralyudvar Tokaji Sec($16); Reds: Chapoutier Cotes-du-Rhone($10-12), Ocone AGLIANICO! ($17-18)

QOTD of the side: Would depend on the weather, but there can be no HFCS if hot chocolate is to even be considered.

  • Anonymous

The vinho verde? I had no idea the 2010s were available yet. I still see the 09’s when I am at the stores. Anyone know of where I can score the elusive red vinho verde in the US? I have only found 2 pink ones, the Casel Garcia rose vinho verde, and the Gatao rose vinho verde.

  • Love the Gigondas. Don’t know if the price point can make it a “house wine” (whatever that means in the present context), but it’s great stuff.

  • Your thoughts on Yatir…?

  • Hope u find it 🙂
