This episode was really fun to watch! The Finger Lakes wines seem very interesting. I liked how Gary explained each one in a simple way. Are these wines easy to find in local stores? Thanks for sharing!

QOTD: My wife…..she was born and raised in Canton, NY (where we both went to college at St. Lawrence Univ).

Gary, I just had my first Dr. Franks Riesling, the 2008 Semi-Dry, on Friday night at home with Dede w/ some fabulous Thai take-out…..along with a 2001 German Riesling and I was blown away by the similarities……very similiar notes to the Dr. Franks Gewurz you tired….big time minerality and acidity to balance the sweetness. I was surprised and impressed. And looking forward to trying a Weimer.

We have some college friends friends who live right on Lake Skaneateles…..will be visiting in the summer and want to visit both Weimer and Dr. Frank.

  • Christopher Dickens

Ah, yes, Reggie Miller made such great memories there.

nice. I’d love to see some more tastings of wines from the east, especially around the great lakes. Here in Ohio, there is a lot of wine produced. And from my experience, it’s mostly not very good, or over priced, or both. I do see potential and gradual improvement, especially in the grand river valley. If a few very good wines get exposed it could do a lot for the region.

Don’t have too many of those Homey…. I went out to LI once and did the tasting where you go form one winery to another for each course of a 5 course dinner. That was cool.

QOTD: The best thing about New York State is…..it’s so close to Jersey….. 🙂

St. John’s Wart maybe? Strong enough for a man…but made for a woman 😀

QOTD…Never have I been to New York State, but Broadway Joe made me a Jets fan years ago.

  • Cubatobaco (Ray)

Awesome! Dr. Frank is my favorite Reisling at the moment. Looking forward to watching this as soon as I get out of the dentist chair…,:(

  • So you guys linked a Dr.Konstantin Gewurztraminer but the show had a Ravins Riesling FYI.

Good show. I’ve never tried a New York wine cause out here in CA you just can’t find them. Might have to dip into the CKC fund and order a few from WL.com

QOTD: I’ve never been to NY :(, or the east coast for that matter.

    lmao@ illegal wild herb harvesting

If you want to finally try a great NYS red, try any of the Zugibe vineyards wines. Best I’ve ever had.

  • tjvalla

Seemed like interesting NY wines. Great varietals at least!
I’m afraid I will not find them here in Europe (Holland). Is there another Riesling in the price range that you would absolutely recommend, Gary?
By the way, looking forward to the rest of the shows for this week, especially your old man’s supposed appearance!
    THUNDER!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Long Island! Lobster rolls!
Finger lakes doesn’t get much love out here on the left coast. We barley get love for the European Rieslings. Of coarse red wine dominates for me so send me some to try please.
Thanks for the knowledge on acid in whites. Kind of what I thought but good to hear it from the G man. Acidity on red wines seems different to me, or have I had too many sour cranberry/cherry pinots? It seems everyone is using the term lately for being the balancing effect on too fruity or cloying reds.? Please educate me on this vayniacs.

here I am! Or do you mean John? He thought we drank Chardonnay!?

qotd: tough to say. Time as a great lakes fishing guide totally turned me off to western New York. I’m not really a fan of the city (there’s plenty of great stuff in the city, but I can’t stand the shell that holds it all).

So I’m gonna go with the Adirondacks. Beautiful mountains.

Gary – interesting show. I have tried NY Finger Lake Rieslings several times in the past but have been disappointed. Found them a little one dimensional and lacking the depth of a good crisp dry Riesling from Alsace or Germany. Looks like it is time to try them again so thank you.

QOTD – many great things about the Empire State that I love. Three spring to mind that get my heart racing – the great NY Jets (still sad about this weekend), the Hudson River Valley (spectacular scenery and local food), the beaches on the East End of Long Island (sand, surf, great sounds, sights and smells). Cheers!

Yeah! Finger Lakes! My back yard. There are a lot of excellent Rieslings from wineries you have probably never heard of. They only way to find most of them is by visiting the wineries.
    btw.. Ravines is pronounced (ra-veans)

  • Anonymous

No I’ve never had a wine from the Finger Lakes.
    QOTD; Lady Liberty

  • Jay

I’ve only been to NY once for the US Open (tennis) in ’09 so not sure I have enough experiences to draw upon. From what I remember I really liked the local authentic NY restaurants/delis.
Rieslings are a bit too sweet for my liking. I’m excited to try the Accornero Barbera Del Monferrato Giulin

QOTD: Best thing about NY State: my husband. He’s from Watkins Glen 😉
We love Riesling with Thai food. We have been to the Wiemer winery and thoroughly enjoy their wine.

Riesling, one of the few wines that I try and stay away from in general. To sweet.

You’re right about that area Gary, it’s all picture postcardish.

Gary, not to get to personal, but I assume Lizzie is thin?

QOTD: The people. I don’t know why they get such a bad rap. Real nice folks in general.

  • bob

Also,. being an upstater(rochester) I’ve tried many of the finger lakes wines. The whites are OK. The reds are usually lacking the finishing qualities, but see my other comment below. The best thing about being in NY, is the change of seasons!!

  • Anonymous

    You care big time!

QOTD#1 — I’ve had a few dry Rieslings, and have at least one dessert. I do think we do Rieslings as well here in NC, but I enjoy Rieslings from all over.

QOTD #2 — as a proud double alum of SUNY Binghamton (MA & PhD), what can I say? (Esp as I was born just inside NYS and grew up a few miles over the border in PA)

  • This question is an easy one: The Adirondacks!!!!!! There is no other place that even touches sitting out on the porch of the lake house with my family, with a few glasses of wine on a summer vacation. Gary, have you ever vacationed in the Adirondacks?

  • Anonymous

    who’s the father?

  • Christopher Dickens

I’ve only been in Buffalo, didn’t care for the town, but in fairness didn’t really explore it much either. Oh and the airport in NYC for a connecting flight. Wait, scratch that, it was Newark!

  • Anonymous

I have not tried the wines but I am planning a long weekend with my wife to sample the vineyards.

  • Anonymous

Ha, We drank it all! And I was referring to John, but I feel an overthrow of the throne coming on 😉

  • ALLAN

    And you’re early……..!

Really exciting show! Would love to try these wines. Your energy is starting to win me over. Where do you get the energy from Gary?????

Qotd: I have nothing to add.

  • Good evening chocolate lovers.. Oh sorry was a bit confused there for a moment
Finger Lakes … haven’t had that yet.
Oh St John’s wort :D(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_John's_wort) it’s a nice herb that we in Sweden use in “vodka” for flavouring

Niagara Falls is magnificant. The New York side is not as commerialized as the Canadian side. They has a great park that you can walk around for hours. There are hiking trails that being you down to the Niagara river.

Try some Leidenfrost Riesling from Seneca lake, you will find is as enjoyable as the other NYS rieslings.

  • hmm I had a beer tasting at home with a friend and just as he left my baby got home. That is timing 🙂
Tasted? Brooklyn Brewery Black ops, Cantillion Gueuze lambic, Leffe Blue, Black Rocket Porter and Orval Trappiste
