QOTD: As with everything balance is the key, I think the short shows (5-10 min) fit in very well with the vayner nation’s busy schedules. But we also need those in depth nerdy 10- 20 min shows as well. I think you do a great job challenging your self to mix it up which is the key. One thing I feel like I haven’t seen in a while is a vertical tasting through some vintages of same maker. I would also love to see a show that featured you choosing some bottles that are special to you for what ever reason, and you share your great stories about those bottles.

    QOTD-
In the scheme of things, I really don’t give a squat.
I like the 1 wines shows, the 2 wine battles, the 3 or 4 wine blinds. Taken all together, with a (rare) guest, (unless it is Shasta of course), and I am a happy guy.

  • QOTD: Just don’t stop mixing it up!

  • QOTD: I just like good content, be it 6 minutes on one wine, or 30 minutes on 5 wines with a guest.

    Good show, Gary.
My only problem is that you cut yourself off near the end.
    One wine? Sure.
If you only have 5 minutes worth of info, that’s cool.
If you want to nerd it up for half an hour, go for it.
You’ve gotta be “No Holds Barred” like when Hulk Hogan dominated Zeus.

Hi Gary…I think mixing it up keeps it interesting and gives you the opportunity to have short and longer shows. I keep them in my inbox until I have a moment. I usually pick the one I have time to watch, so having different length shows is a good thing.

One suggestion, would it be possible to put the price in the tag? Sometimes I forget and it would be easier to just read the tag then have to replay the portion where you mentioned the price.

Love your wine and marketing work.

  • QOTD – Do prefer the mixing it up. Especially when I miss a couple days it is easier to catch up. The other nice thing on the single days is that not only do you keep your focus, but so do I when being introduced to something a little different.

I spent some time in Touraine in 2009 while coming from Chinon and Vouvray and touring the local chateau. I highly recommend it. Had some good wines at very good prices there. Toured a negociant where you could buy wine for 1 – 2 Euro a bottle. They also had more expensive stuff too. And many kinds of varietals. QOTD – I think it is good to mix it up. Some of the short episodes are easy to fit in during a busy week.

Very cool, I didn’t know you could find Malbec outside South America!

    Interesting wine.

Q: I am VERY much in favor of a shortened one wine format, back to basics, hit us with some quality wine knowledge and get out. I am a Vayniac from way back and over the past year or two have been watching less, reason being the shows were getting very long and had too many guests. However, I have been lurking more and more lately and even dusted off my old wltv username via disqus to comment.

QOTD – I think what you want to accomplish in each show should dictate the format:

Showcase a winery or winemaker, single tasting.

Want to show values versus premium brands in a varietal or region, or a specific wine’s quality between vintages, head to head tasting.

Want to discuss what’s going on in a broader sense with a varietal, vintage, or region, three wine tasting to give proper exposure.

And of course the brown bags are popular as well.

It seems, based on my reading of comments, that your audience doesn’t mind length one way or another as much as it desires to have a variety of topics and discussions. So 6 minute episodes are fine, 20 minutes episodes are fine, we view what we can and what we have time for, but we want to take some valuable information away from it. I’d enjoy a 2 minute WLTV if it hit a point square on that I could take to the local store and make a more informed purchase.

2 wines… 5-7 minutes. Head to head, yes…. With your focus, I think we can squeeze ’em in and hit 1000 and your anniversary on the same day!

  • a variety of formats is best. sometimes 1 wine. sometimes head to head. sometimes multiple wines. blind tastings are fun but so are normal shows. & bring back laid back Friday

  • Anonymous

Agreeing with AaronO..2 wines head to head with good focus..Keep it up!

  • I dont usually go with the flow, but yeah! keep changing the format, that’s the way to go.

3:00 A.M. and working the night shift. Tell me can anything be better then make money and watch old Wine Library TV episodes I don’t think so. Well maybe a glass of wine before a good night sleep be this is a close 2nd.

Great show Gary. Also surprised to see that the wine you tasted is actually available here in Japan, so I think I will give it a try.

QOTD: Personally, I prefer the episodes where you are tasting alone (with the exception of those episodes where you’re with your father). I also like your pairings (Wine and cereal was great), the brown bag shows and those episodes filmed outside Wine Library.

PS. It would be great if you had your father on for your 1000th show and you both tasted a crazily expensive wine or a wine that means a lot to the both of you. Just a suggestion.

QOTD: I really enjoyed this single wine show. As much as I love the big shows (and guests, etc.), I like that you’re able to focus and give us a lot of information about the wine that you don’t normally do as much in shows with multiple wines. Thus, even though it ends up being a much shorter show, I feel just as satisfied with the experience (if not more so).

qotd: Personally, I do not like the single wine show. There is nothing to compare. Comparisons to give you an idea of the differences in similar wines is very informative. For example, see the brown bag episode on Chianti from a couple of days ago. Very informative about Chianti, the effects of mixing other grapes, new world vs old world, etc.

  • I agree

  • Anonymous

QOTD: I am a big fan of the head to head. I love the comparison factor and helps me to learn more about tasting. Although I do wonder what would have happened in the Barbera D’Alba episode recently if you had flipped the order of the wines.
Just started watching and love the show. Keep up the great work

QOTD: Single wine is fine. Head to head is good. Blind tasting with many is great. Change it up.

The show under 10 minute I tend to view when I open the email. Many times with show over 10 minute I save the email to come back to. Sometimes I do sometimes I don’t.

If you have pre tasted the wine and know it is a good wine in it catogory, then one wine is ok. If not have two wines.

i think single wine is fine especially in this instance where the wine is fairly unusual ( i love me some loire valley but hadn’t the foggiest that there is malbec in touraine ). still i think a head-to-head with a cahors malbec ( as opposed to some super-extracted thing from mendoza ) could have been a really interesting opportunity to consider the differences in terroir, etc.

Head to head adds way more content b/c you can compare/contrast wines from different or the same regions. I know time is a factor for everybody so 5 – 10 minutes seems cool, but it’s definitely not an issue if the show runs 30 minutes on occasion. We all watch the show b/c we love it and we’re addicted! Really we’re just happy to see a new show is posted and you’re pumped to talk about wine. You should post a couple wines on WLTV for people to go out and try, and then get them to call into wine and web so you can personally get their feed back and tasting notes. A cool way to interconnect the two shows. 1000 show it would be fun to see you walk around the store and do tastings with random customers. Cheers.

QOTD: 5-7 minutes would be perfect. I used to watch and comment on every show until the mid 800’s.. then I just had to stop watching. They were so long that 5 shows in a week that were 30+ minutes each and if you miss some and try and watch them all at once at the end of the week or the weekend, it was like 2-3 hours of watching Gary. I just don’t have that kind of time to dedicate towards the man.
Just couldn’t keep up with it. Sorry. I had to take a break. Bummer.
I have come back the past month and watching the quicker videos that are 12 minutes or less. I can manage those.

No! Do NOT go uniform. How boring! Keep mixing it up. I know I’ve said this at least a dozen times (but you keep asking). I like the variety. I like the blind tastings. Yes, I like this little one wine show. I like the interviews. I like when you “nerd it up”. I like the “old school” format of tasting 3-4 wines that have some connection – or no connection. Just keep delivering and we’ll keep eating it up!!

QOTD: I like short episodes. But I also love when you have guests, and the show is like an hour long!

So what I`m trying to say is, mix it up. Long, short, brownbag, guests, head to head. I love the show no matter what!

  • Love Touraine. I heard that in some parts of the region there is a lot of crustacean fossils below the surface, so you get shellfish on the nose. Anyone else heard this?

  • I like head to head and grouping, but also random.

Keep mixing things up. You’ve got the marketing angle and nice twists and turns, and we’ll keep watching. Like Gruden said, “pound the rock”.

QOTD: I do like to short 5 to 10 min one wine our head to head episodes for maybe 2 to 3 days a week, but you cannot stop throwing in some great guests because they can really bring a lot of good info even if they are 30+ min. And you need to bring the brown bags out every once in awhile. Bottom line GV we will watch what-ever you throw out.

  • I like both….keep it mixed up! Maybe every other or two then two; like JayZee13 said do NOT go uniform! The variety is why I come back to watch every week!
CKC shout out from Virginia Tech!!! J.Boyers Class also; come visit us!

What up BradfromCanada hows the nice winter chill up there.

  • I like more of your more straight forward tasting shows than those with guests. But it is nice to mix up the style. I would watch one wine several times a week.

  • Anonymous

2 bottles in brown bags.. totally blind.

  • QOTD: Mix it up with one wine and a head-to-head throughout the week. In the age old days, I’d have said Monday and Wednesday are 1-wine days. Tue and Thu are head-to-head. And Friday being the good old laid-back couch.

  • QOTD: to tell the honest truth, one of the first things I check is how long the video is. If it goes past fifteen minutes give or take a few minutes, I’m probably not going to watch unless you have a guest that I think will be interesting.

  • My favorite episodes are when you do 3 very similar red wines in about 15-20 min or when you have knowledgable guests for longer.

  • Anonymous

QOTD: I like the most three wines shows, around 17-20min. What about doing some more of totally blind brown bags!

  • QOTD. I don’t like the head to head unless it’s really specific to one sub-region or even producer and blind of course.

Merieau’s wines are really funky. They don’t carry the Malbec here but I’ve had his Sauvignon, Gamay, Pinot, Pinot Rosé and his Hexagonales. All very good stuff at great prices. I love Jon David Headrick’s wines.

  • QOTD: Don’t get uniformal! I like the idea of 2 wines from the same region or variety and comparing. I like how you mix it up, some short, some long, some interview, some brownbag…keep it interesting!

  • john, totally agree, it’s been a while since I mentioned it…all of us are vayner nation emissaries, and have the opportunity to bring our findings back to the community.
Just keep up with the red wine prescription, and it may help your chances, both to make it that far, and enjoy it. Cent’Anni!

  • I’ve passed through by car a number of times, and have camped a little in the Washington national forest…really beautiful country. BurroGirl is a civil war buff, so she’s looking forward to some camping and site excursions. Definitely looking forward to trying more Virginia wines…have had only a couple and Jefferson is likely proud.

QOTD: I like variety. I like seeing a one wine show one day and then a brown bag the next followed by a 30 minute guest show. I think that makes the show 525% better than if you stuck with one format for teh majority of episodes.

    Keep up the good work!

GV – That producer makes a great chenin sparkler and a great white Loire!

QOTD: I like a mixed bag…some short and focused, some longer, some guest, etc! You’re doing it right my man..big shout out to the Berns’ Crew!
