    Oh YEah!

Napa cab again? You really are returning to these wines, huh Gary?

  • ALLAN

    1 st

  • ALLAN

And Denmark wins double this time!!! 😛

  • ALLAN

When you did the intro, I, almost fell of my chair or feet or whatever….!?!!!

  • Anonymous

Hell Yeah! And you got a long deserved shoutout yesterday! How about THAT?

  • Anonymous

    Boo Denmark!

Louis Martini is definitely one of my favorite wines. Thanks for featuring it on today’s show. The fruit is just delicious on the nose.

  • ALLAN

    Welcome to the Oaky-side! 😛

  • I like it, but don’t love this format – head to head in 5 minutes. Would love to say “I am 90 points on that”, but juuust a little short. Great for viewing on the go though, great that you experiment with tweaking things.

  • Anonymous

    weak………….. Poster hogs.

  • ALLAN

Qotd: Dunno, but if it’s over 30 I’d say Diamond Creek 1995 Volcanic Hill. Best wine of all time, ever! Salute!

  • Anonymous

Martini Cabernet and Franciscan Merlot really are some great reliable wines out there. At first, I was surprised to learn that Martini was from Sonoma, because I assumed all good cabs must be from Napa. Just goes to show what you learn from trying different things!

  • ALLAN

    Sorry ass!!!! 😛

  • ALLAN

    2nd shoutout actually, I’m rolling V.I.P. now. :))))

“There is some serious wood being cut in here”….I love it! I mean, ehm…not the wood, but the way Gary says it.

  • QOTD: Sorry, no idea. Had to make a comment though (don’t want to be a lurker ^^)

  • Anonymous

Interesting format for a short show; I couldn’t say what my ‘fav’ would be these days, but I am looking forward to the comments!

  • Randall

    Napa… where’s that, Gary?

  • Anonymous

Yeah that’s true. Does this V.I.P status come with free shipping codes to Denmark?

  • Anonymous

I have not seen the Louis Martini Napa Cab beat for the price, I might slightly prefer the Sonoma offering

  • Unfortunately we do not get much Napa Cab under 30? in Germany. My fav of all time: 2002 Heitz Martha’s Vineyard

Sitting on a 2002 Lewis Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley. When should I pop it Gary?

  • Anonymous

You better recognize! The word is spreading over here. The only problem is that a lot of the wines Gary have on the show is kinda hard to find in Denmark. At least in stores….

  • Nice compressed show, Gary.

QOTD: Haven’t had many Napa Cabs since they are hard to find here on The Rock. I did recently have the 2007 Avalon Cabernet Sauvignon (about $12) while visiting my parents in Houston and thought it was tasty.

  • ALLAN

    Nej

  • “Sawin’ Logs!” That was awesome.

QOTD: I’m a big fan of V. Sattui. They have a couple of cab bottlings that roll in just under $30. Really good, especially when you can put them down for a while. I just had a ’98 a few months ago that was killer.

  • Anonymous

they still make Cab in Napa?

  • Anonymous

They have both a Sonoma and a Napa Valley cab. Sonoma is about 5 bones cheaper but still pretty good,

  • Anonymous

nice and tight great one gary
QOD: uhhhhhhh i dont drink any i guess. I think napa and i go over priced. but ill check these out when i gots the dough.
Any other commenters got solid under 15 bones plays here?

    sawing logs….

the Fuse made me thirsty for water just listening to the description… the next time we host a family of beavers perhaps we’ll serve some. The Louis Martini sounds to be better balanced between fruit and wood, and at $18.95 (my local retail store) may be worth trying.

QOTD: I recently had St. Clement 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Oroppas from Napa Valley (I paid $29.95) that I enjoyed very much after decanting for an hour at room temp.

  • ChrisinMichigan

QOD – best under $30 Napa Cab ……….. Cliff Lede Claret

  • Anonymous

    Didn’t think so…

QOTD: Drawing a blank- babysitting my granddaughter right now, so I’m a little distracted…

  • Anonymous

QOTD: I don’t have one. I don’t really have a fav Napa cab in general. I can’t remember having one under $30 that I ever liked.

Too much oak, too powerful for food, one glass and done. All things I think about inexpensive napa cab.

Nice show. Favorite Napa Cab under 30 bones? Gotta be the cc: cab, by the rockstar wine dude Richard Branson. No, wait. Richard Betts. 😉 Paid $19 for it, I think? Seriously good juice, especially for the money. Cheers.

Interesting show Gary, my favorite under $30 cab traditionally has been Burgess and Cafaro, thoughthe last few years the prices have been rising. Right now I like Uppercut after its been decanted for a few days, really classic cab. Also had a Edna valley that was very servicable. Another one is Forager, by the Peys.

Have tasted and liked both the ’07 & ’08 Martini Sonoma versions and kind of prefer their lighter body and red fruit characteristics to the ’07 Napa which I think you nailed in your assesment. For less than $30 bones I’d have to go for eastern Washington reds with the exception of some Chappellet and three or four others that I’ve found to have a cassis which I like. So I guess I’m no longer a lurker now???

QOTD: I havn’t had enough to know. They get too expensive over here.

This short a show makes go back in the archives, and what did I find?
This little beauty: a definate top 10 show.

Life’s too short to drink crappy wines!

  • Neil McNamara

You can always find a winery dumping wine on the market below retail (ahem, Wine Library) but other than steals I’d have to say that Clos Du Val Napa Cabernet is pretty good. 2007 is a good vintage so probably any of the more affordable value wines would be a failry good bottle. It’s the tougher vintages when higher end wines that tend to outpace their cheaper brethren…

  • Niiice.. short and to the point!

QOTD: Turnbull Cabernet ALWAYS brings the THUNDER… the 2007 is drinking great right now, and will only get better with a little nap time… I get it locally for $29.99…

Love the head to head format. I would vote for more of this across a range of categories- some ideas – value bordeaux, Oregon Pinot, Rieslings old world v new, value rhone plays, premium Northern Rhone, new world Syrah, burgs red and white, pinots from places other than Burgundy, value Chardonnay, premium Chardonnay, value champagne vs bubbles from other places, South America v South Africa reds, Italy vs Spain red, Italy vs Spain white…..

QOTD – don’t drink sub $30 California Cab. Don’t mean to sound snobby but don’t like the over oaked fruit bomb / vanilla flavors that I have always found. For the money, I think you can get much better quality / value from France (Bordeaux or Rhone), Spain or Italy that works much better for my palate. Interested to see what the other Vayniacs suggest in their comments as I am happy to try again if there are better sub $30 California Cabs out there now.

    Cheers!

Again not a big Napa cab fan but I did like the 2007 Raymon reserve that I had at their vineyard last June, I thought it had better balance and less agressive tannins than most Napa cabs I had on that trip.
Nice to see 2 glasses and have a real head to head on this one.

A good episode and I enjoy the format.

QOTD – Franciscian, I cannot recall the vintage, was pretty good. Outside of Nap one of my favorites is Alexander Valley Cab.

  • MattB

Completely agree with you, so many other better things out there for the money in my opinion too

  • Anonymous

QOTD: Just getting turned on to Cab and I haven’t tried enough to pick a favorite yet.

This show was too short for me. Yesterday was six minutes for one wine. I would have liked that one to be around eight. 5 and a half is too short for two wines in my opinion.

I kind of hated writing that last paragraph. You do fantastic work on here. To criticize is pathetic. My apologies.

    Yours,

    B.S.

  • On show format: I like how you continuously mix it up. Some short shows, some longer with multiple wines, sometimes qpr sometimes high end… keep mixing it up! I would like to see slightly more focus on food pairing in general.
