Line of the day – ‘Wine & Spirit is smoking some seriously good ganga if they think it’s a 92’

Great to see the quick-fire tasting method GV would use if he were tasting with a view to buying for the store. Interesting.

Refine This! Make it about 20 minutes longer with some background and some guests. Another tour of the Library would be nice. You asked!
I understand you’re a busy boy but you’ve spoiled us and nothing less than the THUNDER will do!

  • ALLAN

“I’ll be glad when you’re dead, you rascal you……”

    another shorty. interesting variety though

  • Anonymous

3 glasses might make it a touch easier…

  • ALLAN

G, you are the Lucky Luke of wine…… ! :OP

  • Anonymous

    QOTD:

Have all the wines already poured. Give a 2-3 minute rundown of the region and then bam go through the tastings… Maybe that is refined, maybe not.

  • Anonymous

QOTD: here’s how you refine it. You pick a category and you get 6-10 wines from that category. You power through them all, then you pick 3 to talk about in more depth. That would be awesome because you’d be able to say something about the overview of what you were tasting but then also go into some detail (maybe the best ones, but not necessarily). Yeah!

  • ALLAN

    BANG!!! And it’s over……

    Qotd: Well, I dunno, hmmmmm…. I got nothing. 🙂

  • Anonymous

QOTD: Not a fan of the format. Leave it on the editing room floor. I don’t really watch to watch you taste wine G. I really just wan’t an injection of your over the top enthusiasm for wine.

  • Gary. I feel like I’m getting a quickie. Nice, but where’s the love?

  • Anonymous

QOD:refinements of the styles would be slow it a bit i the beginning and give us a little stream of consciousness whats going through your head briefly as you go down line. Toss out the worst then re-taste others giving a tighter presentation much like you did when you re-tasted them here

  • Powerhouse show! Holy Pennzoil Gary! You motored through those wines.

Let’s start a friday chant! FRIDAY! FRIDAY! FRIDAY! FRIDAY! Roll ’em, roll ’em snake eyes… I mean, Couch! Bring back the couch!

How about my Ducks big win last night against Vancouver!!!!

    QOTD: Slow it down.

    p.s. shameless plug: http://maverickpalate.wordpress.com/

QOTD: Have the wines already poured that way you’re not going back and forth between pouring and rinsing and pouring and rinsing… Dialogue of your thoughts as you flash taste first to give us an idea what’s happening, then go deeper into the theme of the show and the wines tasted. But… I’m not diggin the fast show even though it’s probably better for you to knock out a bunch of shows quickly.

  • Alexandre-CF

Hey Gary, to fast dude and kinda empty. I don’t know.

    Make it slower

  • garym

Have the wines already poured in the glasses in front of you, then you can sniff them all at once without touching the glasses. Then you have no rinse and pour for the tastings.
PS What about the “Customer Appreciation Episode” ?

I was going to shoot for my comment number 1,000 to fall on show 1,000, but it does not look like that will come to pass. Did not really like this format, I am sure some people will flip their lid over it. This felt even shorter than the 5+ minute show the other day, I think I might have blue balls (sorry, that was bad, but I have to call it like I see it (or feel it)).

QOTD: Since you have done Aglianico before, not too much background was needed but more would have been nice. Your descriptors are 35% of why I watch the show (60% being the knowledge I receive from it, the other 5% will remain a mystery); when you skimp on the platitudes it is almost as if you don?t care about the wine or reviewing them as much. Tight is ok, as long as there is substance and banter to back it up; I felt there was neither in this episode. But hey, I will take what I can get; and if that means tight shows I will learn to live with it.

  • nope to the taste first format. Watchin a Wine Lib purchase decision tasting isn’t my preferred format at all for WLTV, the taste then immediately breakdown aka Color Sniffysniff taste summarize is legit.

  • I know the Irpinia will be good since you tasted along with James Suckling not too long ago.

Time to go home and watch with the Ratzenberger Riesling that was just delivered from the same show. Cool

  • Anonymous

This show was almost entirely devoid of substance.

  • Anonymous

I am sorry but that was one of the worst episodes ever. Refine it? Uh? Take a deep breath and perhaps try to enjoy the wine. Be more contemplative. I think you actually made me slightly nervous. wow. I am not trying to bring you down but that was just not fun.

  • not a fan of the fast format.

QOTD: I don’t know that I need to respond. It seems many of the other posters are taking care of that for me. Personally, I am an information hound. I want to learn as much as possible. I want to learn about varietals and regions. Today was a PERFECT opportunity for us to learn a lot about a varietal and region most of know almost nothing about.

Hey dude I know you’re like the busiest person alive. I want you to spend time with your fam. Seriously, skip some episodes. Take care of yourself and them. I love the show, but keep the P and PC in balance. We’re getting this stuff for free. You don’t have to keep us happy.

Thanks for the work and effort you always bring us.

    Yours,

    B.S.

  • What the heck, it’s only 6 mins long so I watched before going home on my employer’s dime. 🙂

QOTD: Omit the initial 2 min drill tasting (you tasted each numerous times) and invest in some banter with Mott about Sanchez and his 17-year old or info on the wines themselves.

    Cheers!

    Hi Gary,

Did you tape 4 episodes in a row ( the sweater) ? Maybe that’s why the comments are so negative… I am gonna watch now, because I love Aglianico.
By the way,any tips for someone who has a similar show targeted at the Dutch market?
    Love,
    Seb

  • what? 20F and one feet of snow so far today. Where do I live? The North pole, the north pole

  • the example of tasting cannot be a quality effort and does your palate ever have timne to recover from the previous wine at that speed? My wouldn’t. I’ll need a minute to let it settle.
QOTD: so give this 10 minutes, start with some facts of region, appalltion, vintage grapes, then sniff and taste and give review of all wines in a sequence. But don’t only do it like this. My guess is that will lose you viewers,

Gary you know I got nothing but love for you man. I would have your steenking love child if I weren’t a flaming hetero and very happily married but, this one was… a pazzzzz. I’m still out of breath and a little dizzy. Watched it three times to try and get a better grip of it so give a good critique. It just felt like Junior High Romance quick, shallow and fleeting. Yes that was redundant. Surprised no one has caught it yet, but you rated the first wine a 86 and then when you went back you said you were being nice with an 88 and changed it to an 87. Old boy Chris or whoever does the pairings chart must be pulling out his hair LOL. That said, I STILL LOVE YOU Gary V. Keep up the FABULOUS work. Hey even stinking Babe Ruth struck out every once in a while right. Btw you have way way way way (yes that was redundant) better batting avg than that joker Ruth imho. You da man!

  • I think the core problem with formatting you episodes that this faster pace speaks to the reason why people watch this show. People can identify with you when you’re tasting a couple wines and really studying them because people simply want to enjoy the one or two bottles they have (also a $$ issue). That felt like watching an out of touch business man in my opinion. There’s also not room for much commentary when you’re drinking so many wines like that. I’m not really sure why you’re trying to change the format that has worked so long for you up either?

  • Gotta hop on board with the rest of the crew here. Been taking my WLTV crash course over the last week, and this one just doesn’t sit well with me. I know you’re a busy guy, but feel like there’s definitely a happy medium to be found somewhere between this rapid fire method and a marathon tasting. Thanks!

    QOTD:
    -3 Wines… NICE
    -Name, Region, Taste, Score… Nice
-Then discuss what makes the winner best or what the overall theme of the day is. Ex: Great QPR, Fantastic Vintage, Over-Hyped vintage. Focus on one wine or one theme… Nice

So easy a caveman could do it.

Hey Gary, these 5 to 6 minutes shows are “too beaucoup”. I prefer the “me love you long time” approach.

Yes, the north frickin freezin pole.

btw, I’m guessing you are going to apologize, but you really shouldn’t. You have been TRULY gracious to us. We don’t deserve all the great stuff you have brought us for free. We are thankful for what you do and realize that no one is perfect and no one can please everyone all of the time. This was an effort to please. You are just exploring how to keep things fresh. Oh yeah btw I’m @pedrothethird on Twitter and on your radio show. Yeah you know me.

First thanks for the SHOUT OUT on epidode 981. In followup to my previous rant about not being able to watch the show on TV; I was stubborn and persistent in checking MediaFly (via Roku) and found your program! It’s under the heading of “Wire and Light” and no longer shows the Wine Library TV logo for reasons I don’t understand. Anyway I cauught up on all the shows I missed over the past couple of “brooding” weeks. I’m soooo glad I kept checking.
Re today’s show, I have to agree with many of the other commentors. This may be a good efficient strategy for making your wine buying decisions but it doesn’t translate in the usual warm way. Discussion of the region was abrreviated and I really don’t know any more than I did before the show. But I forgive you and respect what you do to enlighten us.

  • Anonymous

First of all I think this fast format only works when you have wines from the same region/varietal. Then I suggest you give the facts quickly about the wines/regions/grape and then you start tasting. Maybe more facial expression as you used to do to lead us on to which wine you prefer. After tasting all of them you give us a quick rundown of what you were thinking as you were tasting each one.

  • Anonymous

QOTD: I agree with most everyone else. Take your time. I would rather have no show then a rushed one. Your prior format — no real set format — works great — stick with not sticking with it.

  • Anonymous

QOTD: Where exactly is this a format? Feels completely random and more importantly it seems to diminish the value of those wines. If you used to spent 6 minutes alone on some occasions on dissing a single wine after you tasted it, those three here, two of which looked thunderish don’t get the credit they probably deserve.

  • ALLAN

Keep this up Gary, and no one will comment on The 1k episode. 😛
