Line of the day – ‘Wine & Spirit is smoking some seriously good ganga if they think it’s a 92’

Great to see the quick-fire tasting method GV would use if he were tasting with a view to buying for the store. Interesting.

I think that this format is easily replaced by reading bland tasting notes… Face it GV, we weren’t hooked on WLTV because of your tasting notes, we were drawn in by your energy, personality, originality and the fact that you were going against the grain and airing out the musty attic that the wine world has become!

GREAT insight on how wines make it on to the shelves, though, that was really cool! Seems like you need to enjoy your weekend, so I hope you get to relax!

Oh and thanks for the email, just in the nick of time, lol! The wine club’s first meeting is 2mrw and I am PUMPED!

    Take care.

  • Having seen you run the gambit of formats this week I think I have to say, and I believe many people agree, the “sweet spot” of the show is when you do 2 wines giving them each 4 – 6 minutes each. I think one wine is not enough, so the addition of another “similar” wine gives me a reference point to how you really feel about the wine.

I’m not into the “nerd facts” that I could learn from the winemaker’s website. I would rather hear your feedback and take on the wine.

5 minutes a wine, 10-15 minute shows and I think you are the best! #1000 here we come!

I’m right there with ya John

One format change in 984 episodes and some people aren’t that happy about it. My complaint is there’s been 984 episodes of sniffy sniffs and still you haven’t taken one whiffy whiff! Gary when are we are you gonna take a whiffy whiff?

    🙂

I would love to see the day where I can get through one comment that’s posted where I don’t have to go back and re-edit it because I didn’t make a silly spelling or grammar mistake.

  • John__J

Oh wow I think that was my 1st one!

  • John__J

    Hey Ruben,
I’d be curious to hear more about Girgentina and Gellewza. Are they red, white?
What are they like, how’s the quality?
I’d love to see them on WLTV

  • John__J

I’m a left coaster too, but being in Baltimore a 5 hour drive each way doesn’t make it as easy as I’d like it to. But I’ll get there sooner or later.

    Rushed…
QOTD: Three glasses would eliminate the need to pour/rinse so many times, which made it feel awkward. There is potential here, just throw in some sweet nothings about the area and varietal.

    feels way too rushed…

  • Randall

    Guilty!!

Fer Christsakes, would whoever took Allan’s sofa PLEASE return it NOW???

  • Damn, you just killed it…Aglianico is something with which I have limited experience, but what you’ve just described, particularly del Vulture, sounds really exciting to me. My wife and I have really been digging on wines from Etna lately (name also of Greek origin, incidentally), and another earthy, complex varietal from volcanic soil sounds right up our alley, so thanks!

  • Whoa. When you’re drinking wine, you really gotta re-evaluate before hitting post sometimes, amirite?

  • Whoa.

QOTD: I think 5 or in this case 6 minutes is a little too short for 3 wines. Its fine for one wine or even two if your talking about a region or style you don’t have to say much too like Napa. But for things like Aglianico I think you should stretch it out more.

  • Hi, Gary
It looked a little rushed, sorry. A bit as if you had an urgent need to go to the toilets…
Would love to see a location change from time to time: the shop, a busy wine bar, why not be extravagant and visit a vineyard !! or go international and do a show in France or Italy (would I dare Cotes du Rhone)

Long time lurker coming out. Please let the beat down stop. GV, thank you, sir, no, you may not have another. WLTV works because you mix up the show formats, please continue to do so. I think you would actually lose a segment of your audience by locking in any single format. You’re extremely good at what you do and WLTV provides an invaluable service – thanks for your energy.

Please taste Brancott’s Sauvignon Blanc and tell me you don’t taste mild green jalapeno peppers on the finish. I too like vegetables in my wine.

For the 1000th episode, crush it with Sasha and Mrs. Sasha, some cheese and crackers, and some really nice wines.

No we didn’t. He taped a lot of shows in one day, and rushed the last one in order to get home. There was never gonna be a show today….

  • Gary, this format seemed a bit frantic. LOVED the head to head though and would like to see more of those. Keep mixing up the formats though, it keeps it fresh.

I guess if I was buying wine for a store I would like this format. But, because this is a wine review show a little more time with each wine is a format that works best.

If it aint broke, don’t fix it.

    GV: 5 yr episode idea.
    1. Put out a QOTD for vaniack’s favorite moments from WLTV.
    2. Have Mott put together a montage of clips from yours and ours favorites.
    3. Figure out 5 of your favorite/most interesting wines that you have featured on WLTV (1 from each year)
    4. Watch the montage and start taping the show either while you are watching it or just after so you can share your reaction.
5.re-taste the 5 wines for the show (assuming you can get them)

QOTD : I like the shorter non-football just wine episodes 🙂 But I like to think about the wine and get into it while you tell your facts & geek-stuff, before you actually start tasting the wine.
    Aglianico, i’ll remember that varietal.
    Cheers, JDR

  • Gary, love the fact that you are always trying to improve the show and are not content to rest on your laurels. The thing I found strangest about this format was the long periods of silence. I think a few short comments during the tasting “hmm, not doing it for me, this one’s better, etc” would improve things considerably. As is we (the audience) are not getting much until the wrap up.

I like variations on a theme. Each day of the week could have it’s own theme. Brown bag Mondays, head-to-head Tuesdays, one wine-one geek Wednesdays, Something new Thursdays, and Quick taste Fridays like this episode. Just musing…

Regardless…I am a better wine dude since hangin’ with WLTV…thanks!

Please share that there are two regions or types of aglianico, from Campania and from Basilicata (Vulture). Explain/compare/contrast.

  • QOTD: I think the rapide format makes more obvious the contrasts the aromas and flavors of the wines you are testing. While it may blur/hide some of the finer details of the wine at the same time. Like eating vanilla ice-cream and drinking orange juice together.. you get that WOW.. this is ice-cream, and wow this is orange juice. Ze rapide tsting will bring the focus on the sweetness/acidity/body/oaky balance, which maybe be more important to overall likeability of the wine than the subtle flavors.

  • You showed him.

  • Great ideas. I hope this happens

  • QOTD – i like the constant challenging of your status quo. It was interesting to get a feel for the “day in a life”, which ironically the show lasted almost the same amount of time as the Beatles song. I would open up right into the speed tasting of the show, then “Hello everybody…”, talk about the wine type and then do your more in depth tasting. It would be like we were there for the taping of a talk show, see the “warm up” before the show and then the show. Still amazed that after watching you for 3 1/2 years you still show something new. Can’t wait for 1k!

    Hi John.

Girgentina is white while Gellewza is red. I haven’t had any recently. However I know that they are pretty versatile and both are used to make single variety wines, for blending with other varietals and also to make rose and sparkling wines.

I could send you some links via email if you’re interested.

    Ciao,
    Ruben

  • NY Pete

all I can say about your frantic style … what a waste of good vino.

Lurking no more. Love watching WLTV, it has opened my mind and palate to try new wines and enjoy the differences. QOTD: It was an interesting episode, just a little too fast and furious.

  • GV,
Not sure whether drinking wines fast or slow creates any newness or impact. You present
a wine from a particular region of the world, and the audience learns something new.
I’ve learned alot about wine over the years from you. Your “Tasting Room” is interesting because it connects the wines to a theme – now the wine means something in the context of my life. I would explore that more.
    Thanks,
    Cliftonchet

Great show Gary, never heard of this wine or Grape, will try to find it in Winnipeg, those were pretty high scores

  • Hey AndersN does this help?

The only way you can get hold of any type of beer above 3.5% ABV (which is the
case for all US exported beers) is to buy them via the Swedish alcohol monopoly
stores called the Systembolaget. There’s around 420 stores throughout Sweden.
    Their website is here:

http://systembolaget.se/hem (In Swedish though I’m afraid).

The only other way to enjoy US beers here is out in the pubs. US craft beers
have become very popular in Sweden so it’s really not that difficult to find
them. The Bishops Arms chain of pubs (http://www.bishopsarms.com) always has a
decent selection and places like Oliver Twist in Stockholm (http://www.olivertwist.se)
have an amazing selection of US beers.

thosse first 3 minutes were great

  • It has been a LONG time since I’ve posted a comment. I’m not going to read through all the nearly 400 others, but I wanted to say that maybe a refined version would be to bring out 3-5 wines, taste them as you did (2-3mins) and then spend 3 minutes just on your favourite. Give us all the details, taste profile, your score and bring back some pairing details once and a while (great with steak or cheese? fish? etc…).

  • Anonymous

ONE format change in 984? I guess you weren’t following?

  • Anonymous

My point is this: Brown bag is a format change. 1 wine 5 min.s is a format change. 50 “random” wines to pick from is a format change. 1st guest show is a format change. The list goes on.

  • Anonymous

I don’t agree. There is no “sweet spot” (terrible metaphor), but just variation. I never liked head to head, or any of the shorter shows for that matter. Gary is really good with guests I think. And you’re definately in the business…..

  • DaveAll

    kewl. good to know.

  • Anonymous

    too fast.
3 glasses needed (no rinse needed)

  • Yes Randall. ;P

  • QOTD: A little fast, but I’m all into saving some time on things. I wouldn’t be opposed to you doing a quick first pass like that before taping an episode to make things a little tighter and less time watching you pour, rinse, swirl, etc. We’ve gotten to the point where everyone knows you’re honest about tasting whether we see all the minutiae or not.

  • ALLAN

Hey G, just do the show the way you wanna do it.

  • Anonymous

QOTD: I’m stunned. That was so fast that I got almost nothing out of it. I can’t refine it. But that’s just me. You probably can pre-taste the wines off camera and that would perhaps speed up the show a bit. But other than that, I’ve got nothing.

  • Anonymous

QOTD: I like all previous episodes better than this one.
