91/100

Line of the day – ‘Wine & Spirit is smoking some seriously good ganga if they think it’s a 92’

Great to see the quick-fire tasting method GV would use if he were tasting with a view to buying for the store. Interesting.

  • Again everyone I am sorry I was rushed and I dropped the ball, I am sorry and it wont happen again, 1 in 984 aint bad πŸ˜‰

Boring! No charisma. I feel like I was on the short end of a “quickie”.

  • Gary no big deal your the man. This just means that we all know what’s coming on the next show………..THE THUNDER !!!!!!!!

  • i apologize πŸ™

GV, we love ya brother. We just be tell’n it like it is because that’s what you would want to hear. πŸ˜‰

Qotd: I liked the insight into what you do, but its definitely not useable for a show. Nice effort though.

  • Still love ya GV!

too fast . . . felt like i was reading a shelf reader with no personality

too fast . . felt like an impersonal shelf reader

I like the fact that you taste all the wines at least twice to really compare them. Kind of like a back and forth. But I was missing the more detailed descriptions of the wines.

  • Anonymous

It’s great to try a different approach but I watched the show twice and still felt it was missing. Too many wines too little time and it can’t be fixed. I am not a big fan of the shorter episodes

  • Anonymous

No need to apologize, like I said, it was an interesting new format & of course family comes first! More info/slightly longer is personal preference, nothing more. And the shorter shows are helping me get caught up with older episodes πŸ˜‰

  • I found it interesting to see how you work on a day-to-day basis, but agree with the others that it seemed rushed overall and wouldn’t want that to be the standard format. Don’t take it too hard though, man. It just shows you that you’re doing a great job when people feel short changed when they don’t get your full attention for 15?20 mins., which I feel is your sweet spot.

You’re quite right, I fully agree with you, I probably overthought the whole thing trying to answer Gary’s QOTD.

  • Do a cookie pairing episode. You know you want to!

  • that sure was a quickie!! I feel the vayniac world wants to hear your experience and knowledge. Format was interesting watching how you actually taste for the store, but maybe to refine the segment (if time is permitting) you give the audience a little more insight to the tastes, smells, info about the wine. Still loved it! Wish Montana could order wines, we would be some of your best customers!! If you are ever bored …… help me get the laws changed?

Reading all the comments below I do agree that the format wasn’t great, but something great about trying new formats and ideas and putting to to the fans to cast judgment. Fans that are willing to let you know how it is and grow with you is the real result of the Thank You Economy!

    I want more.

  • Red Shouldered Hawk

Ola. Here’s how to do it. Mott and yourself should edit the daylights out of it. Make it intentionally choppy, or speed up betweener parts, and slow to normal for key analysis. For example: [[ “Let’s give it a sniffy-sniff.” Chop “Copper.” Chop “Ganga.” Speed forward: “Eighty-six.”]] You could play with this by having 3 different cameras: one for sniff, one for swirl, one for judgement.

  • Here here for the couch!

  • Greetings from Koh Samui!

Well, like I said in a previous comment, I would love the show even if there were no wines on the table… surely it’s nicer to see you go deeper on each wine (color, nose, little hand over to Mo’, wirl etc.)

what about a show from Lazio., Italy ? there are some serious wines over there too ! Including 100% Petit Verdot !

i have to say that i appreciate the style of the episode. especially as an occasional change-up. as a relative newbie/lurker, it’s making me come out of the woodwork to say so… as a person in the retail wine world, i can relate to the frenetic nature of power-tastings sometimes. if only we could always have the time and stamina to get to know a bottle like a person…

  • Love Aglianico…even the better half enjoys it! COUCH!?!

QOTD: Interesting to watch in one episode, but not nearly as entertaining in the longhaul. Take some of the other comments to heart, an if you must, pre-pour and give more background and taste more wines.

I think it’s time this show goes to an actual vineyard somewhere and teach. Hey I’d watch.

  • Dude, with GV trolling the comments hopefully he will hear us and grant us a couch episdoe with a pack of hockey cards!

    C’mon Gary!

  • I agree with you and John… another tour would be fantastic for the west coast folks.

  • you are a stud! Whoever you are.

  • Hell YEAH! Cool cookies… what do you think would be pair best with blue frosting?

  • let’s hope we get a show tomorrow! Maybe even a couch?

  • QotD: refine? Hell, just add time. I’ve harped on it all week and I’ll continue to harp on it: these short episodes are lacking in both informative quality as well as in entertainment.

Hopefully this week’s series of minisodes was just a week’s passing fancy. If this is the trend going forward then count me much less enthused about the march to episode 1,000, and Hell, about the entire show itself. I think I actually hate how short these episodes are.

  • Thoughtful guy! Well stated

Lol ! It’s a show he should at least try to fool us by taking off his sweater or changing his shirt !

  • Ganja. Nice.

I wasn’t crazy about the format. For one wine it works but not for three. Too rushed and not as informative as the longer episodes.

    Hi John.

We have two native types – Girgentina and Gellewza. We also have international varities (mostly French or Italian) like Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay Nero d’Avoloa and San Giovese.

The best producer is Meridiana. I’ve heard their “Bel” Syrah is excellent, but I’ve never tried it. They also make good quality Chardonnay and Merlot.

The Maltese market is also flooded with Italian wine that sells relatively cheap here since we are only 60 miles away from Italy. I’ve tried various labels of Aglianico in fact!

Let me know if you would like any other info John! πŸ™‚

    Ciao,
    Ruben

AGLIANICO!! Thank you yet again for showcasing this fantastic varietal…I just hope people don’t catch on enough to drive the prices up on this value wine!

QOTD: As someone in the restaurant side of wine buying, I completely appreciate you showing people how quickly and efficiently we often have to do a tasting (especially when a distributor comes in late for a meeting and I have to get the restaurant ready for service!) I liked the fast pace first, then the in-depth analysis, but for a varietal such as this one with such potential and under-appreciation, a couple more minutes of info is welcome (although I can tell by you wearing the same shirt in the last few episodes that you’ve recorded many at a time to get to 1000 by the 5 year anniversary! Can’t wait!). Also, like I mentioned recently, we are due for a BROWN BAG HEAD-TO-HEAD!

P.S.- CONGRATS ON ALL OF THE COMMENTS RECENTLY! I’ve seen over 300 consistently over the last few weeks, especially new CKCs and lurkers. I know the comments are your lifeblood, GV, so L’CHAIM!!

    Hi Gray,

for me thatΒ΄s too fast and too crazy. I feel stressed afterwards! 5 Min for 1 wine is fine but for 3 you should spend 10 minutes.

    Bye
    Steven

  • Finally able again to post, had serious problems with DISQUS…
just to let you know I’m not a lurker eheh.. would be great to have a shout out..;)

  • I don’t like the new format, it’s too rushed! I prefer you concentrate on 1 win and do it well, instead of rushing to do 3 of them!

Look again, Your Highness. It’s there.

  • QOTD: I onestly prefer the standard episodes where you taste a wine at a time. My favourites are however brown bags and some wine & food eps once in a while

  • Anonymous

QOTD: Wwwhat was that. Even you’ve got lost when you first rated the Terra Di Vento 86 points, and later said you gave it 88, which in your opinion was too many, so you’ve scored it down to 87. So, actually, the wine got 3 scores instead of one. Way to crazy! The number of wines is perfect just I missed some 10 min more and more focus.
    Cheers!

Hahaha….I guess you were referring to inside information about the fact that Josh Greene has a smokin oven in his office, and regularly smokes the subtropical fish known in India as ‘Gandhia’…? Sounds very plausible….

QOTD: This fast style is fine when you are out of time, and at the same time can deliver quality comments on various wines. Good job GV. Mix it up thou, I really miss the LAID BACK COUCH with one special wine & cheese.
